Editorial Historic National Championships The Historic Racing National Championships held at Wanneroo on 23 November 2008 were no doubt the result of a lot of work by a dedicated core of club members and the investment of a lot of time and money by the keen motorcycle riders and racers who made the effort to attend. The weather was no advantage either, for November the weather was unseasonally wet and unpredictable. Riding on a wet racetrack is not a pleasant task for anyone and watching bikes slip and slither around the track is not a great spectacle for the non-riding visitors either. For an event that was not well promoted turnout of spectators was not too bad, though the area around the track was pretty deserted. Having club displays at the track on the same day no doubt added to the attendance figure if not to the club coffers.

The obligatary loud speakers around the track made me regret not bringing some ear plugs. Is there nowhere to escape the deafening commentary. Bikes have to be silenced to go on to the track these days, what about the loudspeakers? Lots of old faces were sighted in the pits along with some famous faces rarely seen in Western Australia. Lap times were impressive and the Classic Matchless of Dave Cole turned in record laptimes that would embarass many a younger machine. The fields were sometimes a bit small through lack of entries, breakdowns or the wet weather. Many riders just don’t make the long trip across the Nullarbor which reflects even more credit on those who did make it. The Vintage Club put on a strong display and some rare and wonderfully restored machines were on view. Some of the machinery in the pits and on the track was worth a look or two and it is not every day one sees a HRD racing machine. All in all a good effort and it even made me wish I was back on the track.

Mandy Beales - 1962 Honda 350

Classic Motorcycles - www.ozebook.com Mandy Beales won the Junior Classic Class on her 1962 Honda 350 CB77 based machine. In doing so Mandy was the first woman to win a National Road Racing championship. Mandy also set a new lap record for her class at Wanneroo. Her immaculately prepared Bill Horsman bikes looked most impressive.
