Surprise ceremony for Stan Kij By William Lukitsch Editor-in-Chief Stanislaw Kij looked like a hero when he took a step out of his wheelchair to shake hands with Board of Trustees Chair Sandra S. Wagner, his superman t-shirt peeking out from underneath his green graduation gown. His beaming smile widened when Wagner handed him his long awaited associate’s degree and turned the tassel on his graduation cap. Kij, 25, was diagnosed with stomach cancer late last year. When the Christmas Without Cancer Organization contacted Moraine Valley Community College President Sylvia Jenkins with Kij’s case, she and the Moraine Valley Board of Trustees organized a special graduation ceremony at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn just for him. Ninja Warriors win cyber challenge By William Lukitsch Editor-in-Chief Moraine Valley hosted the United States Cyber Challenge (USCC); a rigorous four-day program catered toward students seeking careers in Information Technology (IT). The demand for educated and capable IT specialists is on the rise – especially in cyber security. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the employment of Informational Security Analysts is expected to grow by 37 percent over the next ten years; quite a margin compared to the average of 11 percent. Over 30 people were selected to take part in USCC’s exclusive invitation-only event. Participants were chosen based on an online competition offered through USCC, which ended in April 2014.

Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year! First, I’d like to personally welcome all the new students here at Moraine Valley; we are glad to have you here and wish you much success during your tenure. Being new isn’t always easy, so don’t be afraid to ask for help. There are also many free resources that you can take advantage of such as the Tutoring Center (building L, room 200), or the Writing Center (building A, room 258); these are just a couple of the many student resources available on campus. To find more, visit the MVCC website and click the “Resources” tab. As a new student, or even a returning student, it’s always good to set goals for yourself and create a plan on how to achieve those goals. Whether it be getting a 4.0 your first semester, or even getting an “A” on that final exam, setting personal goals helps to ensure structure and helps drive our motivation so that we may achieve the success that we so desire. Another great way to enhance your college experience is to become involved. Moraine Valley has over 30 different clubs and organizations; whether you’re interested in governance, poetry, empowerment, or even paintball, Moraine CYBER | page 2 accolades and certificates. Twenty-five names were called on to receive bona fide certificates of completion from the USCC, signed by Governor Pat Quinn. Justin Valentino of Moraine’s Computer Integrated Technologies Department opened the ceremony by congratulating attendees on their success. His passion for IT brought him to Moraine
Valley has a club to fit your needs and interests. Becoming involved is also a great way to meet new people and share in the college culture. If you’re interested in joining a club, head over to building U, room 113, and check out the list of clubs and organizations that are offered on campus. You can also logon to the MVCC website and click the Student Life tab to find out more information. For all our returning MVCC students, yes, it’s that time again. Let’s set a goal to have our best semester yet here at MVCC. Feel like you could have done better last semester? Make the necessary changes so that you do better this time around. Feel as though you weren’t involved enough last semester? Check out Student Life, join one of the many clubs that would love to have you. Let us make the most of our time here at MVCC so that when we look back upon our time, we are satisfied with our experience and what we were able to accomplish during it. Lastly, I’d like to point out an event coming up in September. Constitution Day, hosted by the Student Government Association, will be September 17th, from 12:00-1:00PM. The event is expected to be held outside on campus, but is subject to change. There will also be a $2 raffle where you can enter for a chance to win a one month parking spot in front of the U building. We hope to see you all there! As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to contact me at almiladie2@student.morainevalley.edu or you can visit my office in the U building, room 203. KIJ | From Front Page In an interview with the Chicago SunTimes, Jenkins stated, “We understand our purpose and mission is to help everyone in our community. I’m thankful we are able to do it.” Nurses wheeled Kij into a conference room where he was pleasantly surprised to meet family, friends, doctors, reporters, and members of the Board of Trustees. Balloons, banners and signs were all for Kij, as he took another step forward like so many other Moraine graduates did in May. Kij began taking classes at Moraine Valley in 2007 after graduating from Reavis High School. In his time at Moraine, Kij accrued 147 college credits. In most cases, 62 credits are all that is needed to graduate, but Kij wanted to take more classes. He did this despite
ing speech concerning job prospects in the IT field and encouraged students to continue on with higher education. A non-traditional student, McDuffie didn’t earn his undergraduate degree until 20 years after graduating from high school. He went on to graduate school and attained his PhD. in pursuit finding a challenging and intellectually stimulating career. Since then, McDuffie reports on an overflow of lucrative and engaging job prospects. “It opens doors that you didn’t even

Among the attendees were Kij’s parents, Helen and Jan Kij, who looked on with pride and heartfelt hope for their son as he gratefully accepted accolades. Kij was awarded an Associate in Science Degree from Moraine Valley Community College, along with 10 other certifications, conferred by Wagner with help from Vice President of Student Development Dr. Salleh-Barone, and Executive Assistant to the President Dr. Margaret Lehner. The Burbank local was met with cheers from family and friends upon completing his journey at Moraine. Now, Kij hopes he will have a chance to continue his education. College’s regular Governing Board of Trustee meeting held on Aug. 20 was the challenges that some of the Trustees and other officials had with the new Surface RT Tablets that replaced the
paper minutes at the meeting several months ago. Among those who struggled with the tablets was Dr. Sylvia Jenkins, Moraine Valley’s President. Asked by The Glacier if she “missed the simpler old days of paper,” Jenkins responded by saying that she was “all in support” of the move to digital since the process meant furthering the College green policy by saving tons of paper and reducing Moraine’s carbon footprint. Jenkins blamed her struggle with the RT Tablet on the fact that she only uses the device, which is permanently set up in the Board of Trustees meeting room, once a month, and consequently she has very little time to familiarize herself with its operations. The hitch with the tablets continued even into the meeting proper, as several members of the Governing Board of Trustees did not respond to their names during the routine roll call because they were engrossed in trying to work the tablets, with the aid of two IT specialists who were around for such an eventuality. In her administration report to the Governing Board, Jenkins stated that registration of students was at the same level it was in 2013. She said that as per college rules, scores of students were being dropped daily for failing to make payments for their classes the same day they registered. According to Jenkins, one hundred students who registered and failed to pay the same day were dropped on Aug. 19, and she said that the same day dropping of non-payers was a standard operating procedure during the run up to class resumption. Director of Campus Operations Rick Brennan informed the board that a concept was being mulled over to con-
vert the G Building into The Student Success Center. The new Student Success Center, if approved, would bring the Testing, Tutoring and Vet Centers all under one roof by the beginning of the Fall Semester of 2015. The concept calls for the expansion of the current G Building structure, although the gymnasium will remain untouched. During the Board of Trustees meeting, three members of the library staff, Manager of Library Services Terra Jacobson, Information Literacy Librarian Tisha Hayes, and Library Department Chair Troy Swanson were recognized before the board for the American Library Association’s Innovation in College Librarianship award. The trio received the award for the Fall 2013 One Book, One College event centerpiece, World War M: Human vs. Zombie. The Zombie event, according to Terra Jacobson, involved approximately 500 students, and the theme popped up in more than 60 course sections at the college. Each of the three winners received a $1,000 cash award, which they donated to the Moraine Valley Library for future One Book events. Taking our ball and going home By David Alexander Staff Writer With their headlights turned off, the last U.S. combat troops slithered out of Iraq one night in Dec. 2011. They didn’t even inform Iraqi troops that they shared bases with, lest the Iraqi soldiers tip off militant allies. This was not the manner of a victorious army leaving the battlefield, but, as President Barack Obama tried to bring closure to a very unpopular war, common sense was sacrificed on the altar of populism. The President made the Iraq War the centerpiece of his 2008 presidential campaign, and the time had come to fulfill his pledge to withdraw the troops. Obama dubbed the Iraq War a “dumb war,” and, alongside Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and many other democratic leaders, he pinned their hopes on a defeat of U.S. forces in Iraq to boost democratic political fortune in the U.S. When they were in opposition, they opposed the successful surge of troops in 2007 that checked Iraq’s civil war. Their cry then was “bring the troops home,” and by 2011, most war weary Americans concurred with them. Of course Obama quickly found out
that there was a big difference in making lofty promises while in opposition and implementing those promises when in power. The answer was simple: end the conflict. Iraq’s recently rejected Prime Minister, Nouri Al-Maliki (not the

Exasperated, Obama and his advisers decided to walk away. The result of that decision is sadly clear today. As the murderous terrorist brigands of the Islamic State (IS) exert control over large swathes of Iraq and apply a level of barbarity not seen since the Dark Ages, it’s tempting to think about what may have been if Obama and his troupe of advisers had stayed the course in Iraq, instead of cutting and running. Instead, America is indirectly pro-

So the absurdity now, according to the Vox website, is that the U.S. Air force is destroying hundreds of millions of hi-tech weapons that Islamic State is using to commit slow motion genocide. This is the result of the fantasy that now passes for U.S. foreign policy. Of course there is the human toll of that poor decision by Obama to cut and run. How many thousands of

Iraqis would still be alive and dwelling in their rightful abode, instead of being dead or holed up on mountains and refugee camps if U.S. boots had remained on the ground in Iraq? What about the calming effect the presence of U.S. forces would have had if they had stayed? In addition, any observer of Iraq can see the gradual “Vietnamization” of the conflict (mission creep, as some prefer to call it.) There are currently about 950 acknowledged U.S. service personnel dispatched to Iraq since the Islamic State’s crisis exploded in midJune. Those old enough may remember how Vietnam went from a “police action” to all-out war, again; another mess that could have being avoided by far-sighted thinkers. War is not a golf game, and cutting and running in the middle of a war is a counterintuitive step that will inevitably come back to haunt the quitters. Going into Iraq in 2003 was a dumb decision, but choosing to cut and run in the middle of the night in 2011 with the headlights turned off was an even dumber decision. The militarization of the police By Matt Galvin Staff Writer The National Defense Authorization Act of 1990 authorized the Pentagon to transfer military equipment to local law enforcement agencies when “suitable for use in counter-drug activities.” In the wake of the September 11th attacks, the program’s focus has expanded to include counter-terrorism activities as well. The supplies that were used to face the onslaught of terrorist guerilla warfare in Afghanistan and Iraq are state of the art and in excellent condition. Since the end of the conflict, there is a surplus of military grade weaponry and transportation made available with the help from homeland security to a whole new market: local police officers. Some of the new toys officer friendly has access to: fully automatic assault

“The over-militarization of America’s police force post 9/11 has changed the boys in blue into an occupation of intimidating ground troops.” boys in blue into an occupation of intimidating ground troops. It is turning America a police state, and it infringes constitutional rights and national safety. This issue plays a major role in the escalating situation in Ferguson MO,
vated. Ferguson is filled with outraged citizens and protests have spiraled out of control, leading to rioting and looting. Ferguson P.D. has responded by pulling out the big guns. Reports of excessive force used against protestors and journalists
have made national headlines. Ferguson has been transformed into a war zone. In response to the national attention, President Obama stated, “There is never an excuse for violence against police or for those who would use this tragedy as a cover for vandalism and looting. There’s also no excuse for police to use excessive force against peaceful protests or to throw protesters in jail for lawfully exercising their First Amendment rights.” I whole-heartedly agree with what the President said about the situation, but it does not offer a solution to future incidents. I am not questioning the motives of protestors or Ferguson police, but, rather, the excessive degree of force used on fellow citizens by the police, and what warrants that force. SOCCER | from page 12 have two good goal keepers, but we really have three,” explained Bales. While the game did not count toward the regular season the Cyclones performed at top ability; they took home notes for improvement and bragging rights over Joliet. “Today was about trying out a lot of the things we’ve been working on for the last two weeks,” explained Bales, “because after a while you just get sick and tired of beating each other up.” One of the biggest problems the Cyclones have faced in recent years is consistency. Whether injuries catch up to them, or they simply run out of
steam, they haven’t been able to make any big waves. Bales feels confident that with an all-around talented team, the Cyclones will prevail. “The main thing that we’re going to be looking to counteract is the end of the season. We need to be stronger than we have in the last couple years,” stated Bales. The next scrimmage will take place at home on Aug. 22 against Harper College. Former Chicago Sun-Times sportswriter Bill Figel and professional speaker Mike Nix visited the main campus to give Moraine’s Cyclones a pep talk on the importance of maintaining a positive and professional image. Using proper social etiquette and maintaining a timely and organized schedule were key points Figel and Nix advised attendees to focus on in order to be successful in their careers. The high focused media attention given to professional athletes can often
make celebrity status an inconvenient nuisance. Figel gave tips on how future professionals can avoid unwanted attention under today’s constant news coverage. According to a press release from Moraine Valley Marketing, Figel told students, “There is more pressure on athletes because people know who you are; they’ve seen you. Common sense is the way to go. You have to be careful in today’s world.” William Lukitsch can be contacted at editorinchief@mvccglacier.com.

Heading in the right direction By William Lukitsch Editor-in-Chief The Cyclones look like they may have what it takes to win this year if they can maintain their drive through the season. The Men’s Soccer team emerged victorious in their first scrimmage against Joliet Junior College after they met at the main campus on Aug. 15. Moraine’s first half play was spectacular. The Cyclones let their starting squad loose on the field, and left the visiting team with a two-goal deficit to think about at halftime. Rookie Defender Jon Peters scored the third goal for Moraine early in the second half, but the Wolves answered back when they put one past goalkeeper Rafal Slomba on a rebound. Jonathan Salas put the Wolves out of reach with the fourth goal of the game, resulting in 4-1 Moraine.
The scrimmage was a true test of the new line-up, and it appears that Head Coach Chuck Bales has a finely tuned team to work with this season. “We definitely have some key players that are going to be joining us again,” said Bales, “We’re glad to have those guys back,” Last year’s team captain Jorge Martinez has returned to resume his position for another year. A few other familiar names will include defender Steven Henry, midfielder Jordy Padilla, and forward Leonides Lezama. There are 22 new recruits on the roster this year, all of which Bales explained are “really shining.” Bales is excited to have three quality goalkeepers on the team and named it as one of the many advantages the Cyclones have entering the new season. “In lucky years we might SOCCER | page 11

Second-year player Lindsey Walker serves in practice. [Erica Sinnott]
“I tell all the girls to take it one match at a time, and let your rackets do the talking,” says Head Coach Nicole Selvaggio. The Women’s Tennis team is ready to rack up wins this year as they start a new season with a new roster. Selvaggio is confident that the team can make it to nationals again this year. Coming second place in the NCJAA Region IV Tournament last year has left returning players wanting. “That’s been the goal from day one,” said Selvaggio, “The returners want to avenge that second place loss, and we want to make sure we get to Arizona this year.” Four players from
last season will be returning to the Cyclones’ court this fall. Tricia Poremba, Elizabeth Dominguez, Claudia Maka, and Lindsey Walker showed strength and consistency when the team secured second place in Division IV last year. Their game has only gotten better since they participated in the NJCAA Tournament in May. “That automatically gives them a leadership role and they’re all just stepping up right off the bat,” explained Selvaggio. Newcomers Fabie Ezife, Caitlyn Seldal, Lorissa Sernus, and Agnes Szudy are falling right into place with the Cyclones. Selvaggio was pleased to know that she got exactly what she was looking from recruiting. “I looked for recruits with good character inside and outside the classroom; on and off the court. And that’s what I got,” said Selvaggio. “We’re very strong. I don’t see any holes in our lineup.” The last time Women’s Tennis took first place was
in 2012 when Selvaggio was on the team as a player. Her undefeated record in singles games between 2011 and 2012 earned her the Skyway Conference Player of the Year Award and took her to the NJCAA National Tournament two consecutive years. Since then Selvaggio has been a perfect fit as leader of the team. “This is my team, and I want to see it be successful,” said Selvaggio, “If we stay away from injuries and keep our minds focused on the classroom and on the court, we’re going to be very good.” Still, there are some new challenges the Cyclones will have to face if they want to take first place this year. The 2014 schedule is bigger than it has ever been, with quite a few extra matches against Division III and NAIA colleges. The first game of the season will take place Aug. 25 at home, where the Cyclones will face off against the Eagles from Benedictine University. Robinson’s role in Student Life
Demetrius Robinson is Moraine’s Student Life Manager. He is a staple of the U Building, and will be for the forseeable future. [Sherard Jackson] By Marisol Guzman Staff Writer Student Life has someone to brag about as it celebrates the excellent service given by Demetrius Robinson. Robinson earned his Masters in Organizational Leadership from Lewis University, by way of Richard J. Daley College and Governors State University before taking his position as Student Life Manager at Moraine Valley Com-
munity College. For over nine years, Robinson has overseen the programs that make our campus thrive, and his warm, welcoming attitude is, in part, responsible for the retention rate of the students involved in our clubs and organizations. You might be thinking, “Wow! Fun job,” but managing clubs for a sizable student body like Moraine’s comes with a lot of responsibility. An outgoing and sincere nature, great communication, and immaculate orga-
nization are just a few of the attributes that Robinson brings to the table. Robinson’s positive and inspiring attitude resonates through his motto: “Live the life you love, love the life you live.” His favorite part about his job is working with his student employees and building strong personal relationships. Student employees are his “family” who work throughout the whole year with him to prepare the best enter-
tainment and programs for Moraine. Moraine introduces a new theme with each school year. This year’s theme is centered on superheroes, which was created by Student Life. The bookstore, library, recreation center, and marketing department, will collaborate with Student Life to bring this event to life. There are many beneficial aspects that come with getting involved in Student Life. Joining clubs gives way to ROBINSON | page 2
‘Measure for Measure’ at the Gateway By William Lukitsch Editor-in-Chief For the 11th anniversary of “Shakespeare Under the Stars,” Dr. Craig Rosen and the Moraine Valley Theater Department introduced theater fans to “Measure for Measure.” In past years, the Theater Department has organized mainstream Shakespearean works such as “Hamlet,” “Midsummer Nights Dream,” and “Romeo and Juliet.” Shakespeare’s obscure work, “Measure for Measure,” resembles many of his other plays as it blends elements of comedy and tragedy and focuses on intense issues like justice, sacrifice, love, and mortality. The play sets in Vienna; a city plagued by vice. Unscrupulous citizens are out of touch with the aristocratic ruling class, and the government’s head-honcho, the Duke, is planning to leave Vienna in the hands of one of his aides, Angelo. The Duke makes it known to a local friar that, instead of actually leaving town, he will pose as a friar and infiltrate the lower ranks of society to find out more about his citizens. Moraine’s Movie in the Moonlight: Rio 2 By Marisol Guzman Staff Writer
As the last rays of sun left the horizon, you could see blankets being placed on the grass and families gathering together to for a movie night under the stars. Kids were doing summersaults; parents were buying raffle tickets; it all mixed together to create the perfect complement for Moraine’s Movie in the Moonlight. Roughly 250 people gathered to watch Blue Sky Studio’s Rio 2, which follows the lives of two winged protagonists, Blu and Jewel, who travel through the Amazon with their three children in search of the Pix Macaw. Throughout their journey, they face trials and obstacles created by Blu’s lifelong nemesis, Nigel. Young attendee Kenndi WarenYoung stated she expected, “ Awesomeness; talking birds and funniness.” Her sister Kylie Waren-Young was expecting to “laugh and find funniness” in this movie as well, and couldn`t wait for it to begin. Families were offered free fresh kettle popcorn, courtesy of the summer staff from the Valley Learning Center. Other concessions were sold by the Moraine Valley Bookstore, which provided soda, chips, and candy. Coordinator of College and Community Relations Jessica Crotty has facilitated these events since they began in 2011. Since the debut performance the events have gained in popularity. The number of events has increased each year, with bright plans for the future. Four movies were scheduled for 2014, and five will be featured next year. The Movie in the Moonlight gave something for the parents to do as well; the event featured a raffle with Moraine Valley t-shirts as prizes. As numbers were called you could see winners jumping up and down when they realized they’d won. These shows were created to unite

40 years of passion from McCague
Tom McCague show off a lense from the Bradley Observatory. [James Boothe] By William Lukitsch Editor-in-Chief City-dwelling astronomy buffs can take refuge from light pollution at Moraine Valley’s G. Jack Bradley Observa-
tion Deck in the Nature Study Area. Monthly telescope viewings are held at the observatory, which is located near the northwest end of the main campus. Retired Moraine professor Tom McCague has been hosting the monthly
viewings since 2003. He donated his self-made six and a half foot Newtonian telescope to the college so that community members could have an opportunity to catch an exclusive glimpse of various constellations, clusters, planets, and moons. McCague’s passion for astronomy began over 40 years ago, when he first started constructing his own telescopes. He has since shared his affinity with the stars through his generous donation of his time, and the telescope itself. The telescope is housed in a big white dome on the observation deck, where it rests between events. McCague built it from a variety of easily accessible materials one can find at a local hardware store like Teflon, plywood, and PVC pipe. The integral piece is a 13-inch circular mirror, which collects and focuses incoming light onto another mirror that in turn reflects an image out of an opening at the side of the front end and into the eyepiece. The capacity of McCague’s creation is incredible, with the ability to focus on the moon, other galaxies, and other planets in astonishing resolution.
The latest event scheduled for Aug. 8 was cancelled due to inclement weather. McCague came to the site and set up the telescope, but deemed the conditions too poor to view anything. High winds, overcast skies, and On clear nights, McCague has guided his incredible creation across the stars, and shared his vast knowledge on the universe with spectators. You can usually find parents propping their children up to the eyepiece to peer out into the vast reaches of space. Whether you’re an amateur astronomer or a veteran stargazer, Moraine’s telescope viewings are an enjoyable community event. The next viewing will take place on Sept. 5 at 7:20 P.M. and is open to the community. It will be rescheduled in the event of inclement weather. Celebrating and remembering By William Lukitsch Editor-in-Chief There’s something exhilarating about the power produced from fifty welltrained voices singing in time and key. The Moraine Valley Chorale and Chamber Singers have flourished under the directorship of Nicholas Thomas, and it showed during their last performance at the annual Patriotic Concert. Stronger, louder, and clearer than ever, the Chorale sang through the night with a set-list of national favorites; their presence ornamented by the dexterous hands of ten instrumentalists and accompanist Beverly Holt. Choral fans found a star-spangled site when they gathered at Dorothy Menker Theater on July 26. The evening started with a narration by Jeanne Vaughn, who gave a passionate and eloquent reading of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by James Weldon Johnson. Attendees rose from their seats as the choir commenced with the opening number, “Star-Spangled Banner.” Thomas came well suited to the tune. Sporting a pair of American flag sneakers and socks, he conducted the group under

Each of the selections from the evening focused on American nationalism. “Thank You Soldiers” by Michael and Angela Souders was performed over a short video, commemorating the service and sacrifice of our veterans and active soldiers. Six new additions to the Chorale’s songbook were unveiled during the per-
formance. New songs were purchased through generous donations from benefactors and loyal patrons who wish to see the choir’s song library grow. “America, Our Home,” “Land of the Free,” and “Blades of Grass and Pure White Stones” stood out as exceptional performances, exercising each facet of the talented choir. In the last scheduled song for the show, the chorale paid tribute once again
to veterans and soldiers with a medley of the official fight songs for the United States Navy, Army, Air Force, and Coast Guard, “Salute to the Armed Forces.” Thomas invited servicemen and women to stand and be recognized; the house lights came up and veterans stood at attention when they heard the song that represented their branch. The entire crowd rose for a standing ovation after the song ended, and stayed on their feet until Thomas asked, jokingly, “Well, why you still standing there? Would you like another?” Thomas led his singers through a magnificent encore performance; a medley which combined “America, the Beautiful,” and “God Bless America” to officially end the night. The next concert from the Moraine Valley Chorale and Chamber Singers, The Great American Songbook, will take place at Menker Theater on Oct. 11, featuring music by George Gershwin and Irving Berlin. Druming up some summer beats
By Dimka Atanassova Staff Writer One of Moraine Valley’s Music Department Summer most celebrated traditions is the free Percussion Ensemble concert. Led by Douglas Bratt, Director of Percussion, Jazz Ensembles and Concert Band, eleven founding members, students, and professionals gave a memorable tribute to noted contemporary composers. This percussion extravaganza of nine selections was put together after fourteen hours of rehearsal time during the seven-week summer semester. The opening number was “Wild Stallions” by Dr. Garry P. In “Cha-Cha Blues “by Arizona percussion professor Josh Gottry, xylophone is the primary melodic instrument along with bongo drums. In a laid-back chacha jam with Cuban rhythms with syncopated figures, students participated in open vamp. The featured main soloist was Alvin Mathew, a founding member. Inspired by Caribbean (Trinidad and Tobago) Carnivals was Rick Cline’s “Carnival,” the piece that received the most applause from the audience. Cline is a Hickory, North Carolina, based percussion professor and a recipient of awards, who teaches workshops, master classes, and outreach programs for kids of all ages to participate in community percussion and steel drum ensembles. Steel
pans are 55-gallon drum containers with dents called cabasas, loops of steel ball chain wrapped around a cylinder. Douglass Bratt joined his students by playing on steel drum. The audience was carried away to Bali Island, Pacific Ocean by “Batik,” through a four-minute Indonesian style pentatonic scale. It was written in 1999 by James Campbell, a respected figure in the development of contemporary percussion music and professor of University of Kentucky, Lexington for metalophones and xylophones primarily. Tomas Trakis played on metallic gong. The patrons were transported back to South Paolo, Rio de Janeiro samba-reggae dance by rhythms of “Bahia Street Beat.” It is Julie Hills’s original work for steel pans. Bratt joined his ensemble again as pannist (steel pan player) and Jonathan Michalik, a computer science major, as a featured soloist. Often during the concert, Bratt holds
short clinics introducing various percussion instruments from around the world. The closing selection was a two-and-ahalf minute fiercely galloping rhythm of Armenian wedding dance, Sabre Dance, the final act of Aram Khachaturian’s ballet, “Gayane,” which quickly became a jukebox hit in the U.S. as one of the most familiar tunes of the 20th century. Erica Sinnott, a MV student and the Glacier’s photographer, when not playing various instruments, was seen taking photo shots from different angles. During Sabre Dance she played on daire. Moraine Valley’s Concert Band and Percussion Ensemble will be celebrating their ten-year anniversary this semester. The concert dates are Sunday, Dec. 7, 3:00 p.m., and Thursday, Dec. 11, 7:30 p.m. Dimka Atanassova can be contacted at atanassovad2@student.morainevalley.edu.
Bratt brings the summer swing By William Lukitsch Editor-in-Chief The Moraine Valley Jazz Ensemble recruits some of the most talented students, faculty, and community members who all share a passion for jazz music. Under director Douglass Bratt, the ensemble has blossomed into an incredibly talented outfit. On July 25, seats were filled at Dorothy Menker Theater for the ensemble’s most recent concert, Hot Summer Jazz. The Moraine Valley Jazz Combo opened the show with an impressive four-song set and ignited the night with a range of jazz standards. Led by Director Mai Sugimoto, the quintet gave the audience a taste of swing style jazz with Thelonious Monk’s “Straight, No Chaser,” featuring brilliant improvisations by pianist Isuel Kim and guitarist Brian Salkas.
“Driftin’” by Herbie Hanckock featured Kim on keys again; whose musical gift has been a delightful familiarity throughout her time with the Moraine Valley Combo and the Moraine Valley Jazz Ensemble. Hot Summer Jazz was Kim’s last concert at Dorothy Menker before transferring to the University of Illinois at Champaign. The combo picked up the pace with the playful, melodic “Recorda Me,” which exemplified the percussive skill of Ed Oberdieck on xylophone. Oberdieck went on to dazzle spectators with his drum solo in the Combo’s final song “Caravan.” Once the combo left the stage, Bratt and his crew took positions and started right into “Gobbledegook” by Ryan Haines. The ensemble made their presence known with this intense big band track, weaving each section of the 20-member group in perfect harmony. After the first number finished, Bratt
took a moment to introduce the audience to a few of the ensemble members including newcomer Jack Ruf. Ruf is an Andrew High School student, whose mother Brenda Ruf has the baritone sax chair on the ensemble. “Trust me, when you’re in high school, there’s nothing cooler than playing jazz with you mom,” said Bratt, jokingly. Instrumental performances of “Stolen Moments,” “All the Things You Are,” “Chameleon” celebrated the skill of the horn section throughout the first half of the show. Bratt took a moment to recognize a former member of the Jazz Ensemble, Brenard J. Knowski Jr., who passed away earlier in 2014. Kind words about Knowski and his contribution to the band conjured nods of understanding and approval from the rest of the ensemble, as they reflected on the memory of their dear departed friend. One of the songs that often featured
Knowski on tenor sax, “Angel Eyes,” was played in his honor. Guest performer and Moraine faculty member Dean Bapes emerged for the second half of the show. Renditions of “Embraceable You,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” and “All or Nothing at All” gave Menker Theater the feel of a cabaret jazz club, with Bapes on vocals. Stellar performances by veteran saxophone players Tom Haan and Carl Coan were the highlight of the evening. Both showed an incredible level of improvisational skill throughout the show. The ensemble coordinates four concerts annually. The group will take Menker stage again on Dec. 5 for their Holiday Concert. MEASURE | from Front Page the tyranical Angelo begins enforcing the laws of the land in a swift, strict, unforgiving manner. At the same time a young man, Claudio, has impregnated his girlfriend Juliet out of wedlock. This violates a law that has not been enforced for some time. Angelo sentences Claudio to death by beheading. Claudio’s closest kin, Isabella, catches wind of her brother’s fate. She begins a quest to save her brother from prison at any cost. Meanwhile, the Duke does what he can to help Claudio and Isabella while remaining incognito. Moraine’s production creatively and tastefully wove contemporary props and costumes into this classic work. Scene changes and intermission featured interludes resembling an episode of the reality television show “Undercover Boss.” Costume design was also quite clever; Claudio was dressed in an orange DOC jumpsuit, officers wore modern police uniforms, and officials were dressed in jackets and ties. The Gateway was transformed into a grand bi-level construct befitting a scene in 17th century Vienna. Rosen’s casting called for a complete gender role reversal. Each male character was portrayed by a female actor – and vice versa. While the cross-dressing conjured a few laughs from the audience, it added a unique element to the entire
production. Actors were forced to abandon themselves, and delve into their roles. Adjunct Theater professor Carly Bishop played the part of the Duke to perfection. The Duke is a character who is also playing a character; a true test of any actor’s ability. Bishop’s intensity and eloquence made this role genuine and compelling. Dan Scott played the part of the soft-spoken Isabella. Despite his stature, Scott’s representation of this softspoken character was quite convincing. While towering over fellow cast members, he managed to exude Isabella’s humble, frail, naieve demeanor. Emily Nelson represented the villainous Angelo, and performed wonderfully in her first Shakespearean work. Nelson’s Angelo was stark, relentless, and despotic. She flawlessly delivered lines and executed scenes with the air of an adept actress. For their next production, the Theater Department will take Dorothy Menker stage with the hit Broadway musical “Cabaret.” Open auditions will take place at John and Angeline Oremus Theater on Sept. 8 from 7-9 p.m. William Lukitsch can be contacted at editorinchief@mvccglacier.com.
