Alumni inducted to Hall of Fame

By William Lukitsch Editor-in-Chief Seven former Moraine Valley Community College students have been selected for induction into the Moraine Valley Foundation’s new Alumni Hall of Fame.

“The Hall of Fame has been created to celebrate the accomplishments Moraine Valley alums have made in their careers and respective communities. We are excited to share these successes with current students, faculty, staff, and our community,” says Assistant Director of the Moraine Valley Foundation Kari Panthol.

Foundation and Board member John Coleman proposed the Hall of Fame to the

Board of Trustees in February 2014. The Foundation Board propelled the plan forward, insisting that the recognition of Moraine alumni was an integral key to raising funds for various college programs and scholarships.

Community locals nominated alumni who merited acknowledgement for their success. Narrowed down from 14 total nominees, winners were chosen based on coursework, success in their respective fields of expertise, and contribution to the local community.

Inductees include alumna Michelle Gerrity, who earned her Associate of Science degree in 2009. After graduating from Bradley University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechani-

cal Engineering, Gerrity moved to Dublin, Ohio to join Honda’s Research and Development team, where she helps design and test safety features on new Honda models.

Dr. Laura M. MartinezAversano, owner and dentist at Manhattan Dental Care, will be recognized for her achievements as well. After attending Moraine Valley from 19941995, she went on to earn her DDS before establishing her own practice in Manhattan, IL. Former Moraine Board of Trustees member Mark Weber earned his Associate of Science degree from Moraine in 2003 before transferring to University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. Hello MVCC students! By now, hopefully you all have become situated with your classes and are ready to engage the semester with full force. If you haven’t already found an interest in a club or organization, now would be a great time to start!

Personally, when I first enrolled at Moraine, I didn’t really know too many people as I’m not really considered a “traditional student”; it was only until I decided to seek greater involvement around campus that I really began to meet all kinds of new people and really enjoy my time on campus. Becoming involved is something that I’d strongly recommend for every student to enhance their college experience. I’ll share a few ways you can become involved right now.

Fall Fest is coming up on September 24 and will be held outside in the quad from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; this will be a great opportunity for you to meet with all the different clubs and organiza-

tions around on campus to get an idea of what they’re all about. Super Hero is the theme for the fest, so be sure to dress up and accessorize with your favorite Super Hero gear!

Have you heard of the Student Government Organization? (SGA) Interested in becoming a campus leader?

SGA (“Students Serving Students”) serves as the voice of the student body here on campus. SGA is directly involved with coordinating student events, promoting awareness, promoting leadership, promoting diversity, and much more. Whether you’re interested in refining your leadership skills, or are just looking to become involved with current student issues, this is the club for you. The next SGA meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 16 in U209 at 4 p.m. I’ll be there and I hope to see you there too!

One order of business addressed was the upcoming Constitution Day celebration on Sept. 17. SGA decided to bring in local official Senator Michael E. Hastings as the keynote speaker for the event this year. Other specifications were tentatively agreed upon regarding fundraising, recruiting, and organization representation.The most important aspect of SGA is its connection with the Moraine Valley Board of Trustees. Elected Student Trustee Eamon Almiladi is the hardline to the Board; he presents student issues, questions, and concerns at monthly board meetings.

“Student Government really is about hearing the voices of other students, and bringing it to someone’s attention,” said Student Government Association President Susan Ismail.

Ismail spoke to fellow SGA members about the importance of their positions, and the progress she hopes to achieve in the academic year.

“If we don’t do anything to be a part of that change, then we’re just talking,” said Ismail.

According to data compiled by The

College Board, the average US student spends nearly $1200 a year just on textbooks; a rising cost that has not gone unnoticed at Moraine. In 2013, SGA members addressed this high-priority issue by proposing a new portal through the Moraine Valley Bookstore, which has yet to be completed.

“Change takes time,” explained Ismail.

SGA expects the new portal to be finished and ready for use by spring semester 2015. Almiladi is also working on a new initiative to ensure that books will be readily available electronically to help ease the financial burden for students.

Students at colleges need committed leaders to represent their interests and fight for fair practices. With Ismail at the helm, and Eamon Almiladi in our corner, students seem to have the support they will need.

SGA is currently looking for students who are interested in assuming leadership roles in their organization. The next SGA meeting will take place on Sept.16 in U209 at 4:00PM. For more information contact Ismail at ismails4@student. morainevalley.edu.

One of the most expensive investments college level students make is with textbooks. SGA has employed various methods in recently to combat this growing concern among Moraine students.

Through the SGA Book Scholarship, $3000 has been given away each year over a total 10 years. Funds are appropriated through various Student Life fundraising initiatives; primarily a Book Sale held in the U Building.

Applicants were required to have a 2.5 GPA, present a letter of recommendation, and be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours to be eligible for the scholarship. Students transferring in from high school provided references from teachers, and current Moraine students from faculty or staff members.

SGA officials assessed applicants based on a written essay, which prompted students to explain what leadership characteristics they possess, specific Moraine Valley issues they would like to see resolved, and strategies for overcoming educational challenges.

While applicants were judged on essay quality and their references, the de-

ciding factor was based on need.

“This scholarship was designed to provide a little bit of money for books for students that really need it,” says Student Government Advisor Bradley Custer.

The five winners will each have $200 to use toward their books this year, which can be a tremendous help. Still, it’s not close to covering the total cost of books for a semester; which is an issue SGA is currently working to resolve.

A new Book Donation program is scheduled to set in motion by Spring 2015, and new portal through the Moraine Valley Bookstore will help reduce cost as well.

The information on the winners has not yet been released by SGA. Another article naming winners of the scholarship will run in the next issue of the Glacier.

The awardees have been decided for Fall, but students will have another opportunity to apply, come Spring 2015.

Digital age requires digital options

By Joshua Mira Staff Writer With the onset of the digital age, more and more facets of everyday life are becoming integrated with the latest advances in technology. Indeed, the Information Age that we currently live in is striving to increase the modularity to otherwise archaic and rigid systems.

This also applies to education. Some colleges are becoming more and more comfortable with the idea of adapting traditional classroom courses to the Internet for students who prefer an online learning experience. Moraine Valley is proud to say that they have joined the ranks of these colleges.

Beginning this semester, Moraine Valley, through their partnership with the prominent online class provider ed2go, will start offering various noncredit classes through Moraine Valley’s system. These classes can be accessed on a 24/7 basis and only requires an Internet connection.

Many students see this as a boon for their learning experience here at

Moraine, citing the advantages of an online class such as flexibility, privacy, and comfort. Some students state that a physical classroom can be hostile environment, and prefer online courses.

Professors at the college are in agreement as well that these online classes provide some students an advantage that cannot be obtained in a physical classroom. Various members of the faculty have stated that a classroom experience can be a distracting one, and some students focus better at home.

As well, the financial advantages of an online class are also drawing numerous students that would otherwise be adverse to the idea of learning from an electronic program. Internet courses eliminate the need to commute, to dorm, and to purchase books, all of which take their tolls on students’ wallets.

The job market also seems that it is becoming more accepting with those who have an online degree. More and more employers are starting to see the merit that online degrees warrant in the work force.

A wide variety of these factors have led college freshmen to select online courses over traditional courses.

Data gathered by Gallup Poll shows that Americans have shown a 7% increase in trust of online colleges from 2011 to 2013, the positive, negative and neutral opinions being 37%, 27%, and 34% respectively.

Inter Club Council reunites students for fall

By William Lukitsch Editor-in-Chief The Inter Club Council (ICC) is the governing body that oversees all Student Life events that take place at Moraine Valley. Student Life Manager Demetrius Robinson created it with the purpose of coordinating events for clubs and organizations, and ensuring constant communication between Student Club members.

On Sept. 2, ICC met to discuss prospective plans and introduce new and returning members to the agenda for 2014.

“My biggest goal for Student Life this year is collaboration,” said Robinson.

Robinson hopes that this semester will be a productive one, where student clubs will work together to achieve the common goal of creating strong bonds among Moraine students.

Student clubs have yet to be officially established for the Fall 2014 semester. Returning students met at the ICC with the intention of reviving past clubs and creating new ones. Many of the budding clubs and organizations at

Moraine are looking for membership to fill their ranks.

Student Clubs are required to be led by an Advisor to oversee all club activities. Officers who assume leadership roles in student clubs stand in as representatives at every ICC meeting, and are required to dedicate a considerable amount of time and commitment in order to fulfill the needs of club members.

When clubs want to raise funds, introduce a new event, or raise awareness for a charity, they bring it to the ICC. Robinson acts as liaison for each student club on campus and facilitates programs through the Moraine Valley administration. Programs on campus are through combined effort of student officers and Robinson.

Robinson introduced meeting attendees to the resources that will be available to club leaders in the coming fall semester. Officers will be required to attend mandatory leadership workshops to develop fund management, and organizational skills, ensuring that they have the necessary training to facilitate club events.

Boquets buy backpacks for CPS students

By William Lukitsch Editor-in-Chief Thanks to a partnership between Moraine Valley Community College and a local floral vendor, 61 Chicago Public School (CPS) children will have basic school supplies this year.

Attendees at Moraine’s May 2014 graduation ceremony were able to purchase bouquets from Flowers for Dreams through the Moraine Valley Bookstore.

For every $27 earned, Flowers for Dreams donated a backpack packed with school supplies to a low-income CPS student.

Bookstore Coordinator Lynn Doulas expressed how the initiative to continue their business relationship with Flowers for Dreams has helped satisfy Moraine’s Democracy Commitment; a national initiative, which encourages community colleges to expand programs and serve the local community.

“We sell flowers anyway as a service to our graduates’ families. We’re happy that service also will help low-income students receive the supplies they need to be successful on their educational paths,” said Doulas.

Organically grown flowers provided supplies for CPS students. [Erica Sinnott] Nearly 87% of CPS kids come from low-income families, and, for some, necessities like notebooks, pencils, and backpacks are simply out of reach. Funds accrued by Flowers for Dreams are donated to students through Supplies for Dreams; a local charity dedicated to providing Chicago area schoolchildren with supplies, funding field trips, and

tutoring remedial learners. Due to support from local sponsors, Supplies for Dreams has donated over $350,000 to over 9,000 students since its inception in 2008.

In regard to Moraine Valley’s participation over the past two years, Flowers for Dreams Co-Founder Joseph Dickstein stated,

“The graduating class and Moraine Valley took a chance on something unique. Over 100 backpacks and nearly 2,000 critical school supplies later, they will have helped four classrooms of local students get the resources they need to complete and achieve. It is a positive thing that this respected institution of higher learning is positing conscious efforts to give back,” said Dickstein.

Flowers for Dreams donate 25% of their net profit to a local charity every month. They have risen over $67,000 total for local causes including the Chicago Special Olympics, Bright Pink, and Ronald McDonald House Charities. After a second successful year with Flowers for Dreams, Moraine Valley plans to continue doing business with the communityfocused company.

“Our plan to continue working with Flowers for Dreams for future commencement ceremonies will indirectly create a wealth of more engaged citizens.

With a bit of reaching out to our graduates’ families, we should be able to help more students next year,” said Doulas.

are Elgin Police Chief Jeffrey Swoboda, Civic Federation Senior Research Associate Mark Patoska, and Court Appointed Special Advocate for Cook County Elaine Echols.

A special reception will be held at Moraine on Nov. 13 to honor the alumni.

Inductees will also make appearances at the main campus throughout the year to give lectures for students on possible career paths and degree choices.

Cautious approach, but not correct

By David Alexander Staff Writer The human animals of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) carried out their threat to behead the 31 year old US journalist Steven Sotloff, barely two weeks after killing US journalist James Foley.

As this nom de plume that gang of barbarians continues to gain power and terrorize, one can’t help but wonder why President Barack Obama hasn’t sent troops into Syria to root this gang of human animals out.

Obama supporters defend his cautionary approach to everything, while his opponents derisively describe him as the “ditherer in chief!” ISIS is not going to give a time for pondering and for great searching of minds. This is a time for immediate action.

Of course, this all could have been avoided, had Obama confronted the human animals of ISIS was when they erupted out of the desert and took over Mosul in June of 2014.

There were cries for American air intervention then, but Obama chose to sit on the sidelines as usual and

They’re hiding away their killers and equipment while President Obama and his advisers twiddle their thumbs and hope for something to happen.

It is sad to state that in this war on terror, delay is dangerous. Especially when dealing with intelligent, albeit diabolical, ISIS operatives. The only way to comprehensively defeat ISIS and their ilk is to have American boots on the ground. We need to send American troops who are willing to do whatever it takes; just like the men of the greatest generation did over 60 years ago to win WWII. Dropping bombs from an altitude of 15,000 feet won’t win this battle. If the US does not intervene soon, there will undoubtedly be more headless American bodies lying in unmarked graves in the desert.

A long fight to maintain free press

By Joshua Mira Staff Writer The First Amendment of the United States grants journalists unprecedented flexibility pertaining to their right to investigate stories; a right that is seldom available to reporters operating in different parts of the world.

Sadly, Egypt is not one of the countries that grant reporters the freedoms that are provided to them in western nations.

On June 24 three Al Jazeera reporters were arrested and sentenced to 7 years in prison by the Egyptian government on charges of publishing uncorroborated news articles, endangering the Egyptian public, and supporting the Muslim Brotherhood, an organization that the Egyptian government opposes.

Fahmy, have filed for an appeals to the Egyptian court, demanding a retrial of their case. Along with reporters, many humanitarian groups have called for an immediate release of the trio, accusing the government of setting up a rigged trial.

The trial itself consisted of evidence that was considered by many experts to be faulty, with a majority of arguments against the trial pointed towards the authorization of evidence that would be immediately thrown out in fair trial. Videos taken from Greste’s previous assignments, irrelevant Facebook pictures and posts, as well as other personal miscellaneous information on the trio, were used to jail the reporters.

Numerous news organizations and world leaders have delivered scathing criticisms against the Egyptian High Court of Justice for their handling of the trial; Amal Alamuddin in particu-

lar, a prominent human rights lawyer involved in the case, has criticized Egyptian President Abdel Fattah elSisi for allowing the trial to stand.

Amnesty International’s Director Steve Crawshaw has called the judgement an “outrageous ruling”, and has publicly decried the trial. Likewise U.S. Secretary of State met with President Sisi specifically to discuss the trial, and referred to the High Court’s decision as “a deeply disturbing setback to Egypt’s transition.”

Fellow news organizations have also come to aid the reporters as well.

BBC held an organized vigil on-air to protest the ruling; BBC reporters stood with their mouths covered by tape and holding up signs in support of the trio, demanding their immediate release.

CNN has also provided major coverage in the United States on the incident, covering the blind spots that

Al Jazeera cannot attend to as a less visited news organization in North America.

The Judicial Branch of the Egyptian government, despite aggressive opposition, has remained adamant in their ruling, and would not provide commentary on the subject. This has drawn much criticism from officials in western countries, but the ruling will continue to stand.

President Sisi, in response to the overwhelming sentiment for the reporters’ immediate release, has gone on the record to state “We will not interfere with judicial rulings… [and] we must respect judicial rulings and not criticize them even if others do not understand this.” President Sisi would provide no further commentary on the incident after this statement.

With only four returners, the overhaul on this team has been huge and the new team has materialized into an organized and diligent force.

Scrimmage games against Joliet Junior College (5-0) and Harper College (2-1) showed the speed, fitness, and efficiency of the Cyclones. Head Coach Chuck Bales gave praise to his 22 new recruits and four returners. The wins revealed the fine-tuning Bales has done with his starting line-up.

New additions to the team appear to be perfectly capable athletes with high hopes and aspirations for the new season.

“They’re pushing each other and demanding a high level standard of play already,” says Barnes.

The first official game of the season took place at home against Richard J. Daley College on Aug. 30. Moraine shut the Falcons out with very impressive defensive play throughout the game as the Cyclones decimated Falcons (0-5). Newcomer Giovanni

Sanchez scored the first goal just 5 minutes into the game, assisted by Jesus Sandoval. Jose Estrada assisted Gilberto Andrade on his first, leaving the Falcons with a 2-goal deficit at the half.

Sanchez scored again in the second half, this time with an assist by returning midfielder Jordy Padilla.

Less than ten minutes later, the duo flipped roles and Padilla scored the fourth goal of the game assisted by Sanchez, virtually crushing all hope for the Falcons.

Przemek Tylka scored the last goal of the game with a free kick, delivering a final blow to the Falcons.

Unfortunately the Sept. 4 game didn’t go as well. The Cylcones were swept up by the Waubonsee Community College Chiefs in a game that ended (2-0).

Tennis redeems after close loss

By Brandie Lorenzen Staff Writer When playing tennis, one needs to know that it’s not all about hitting a ball. It’s all about the footwork, concentration, and participation.

With the anticipation Head Coach Nicole Selvaggio has for her team, it seems like they are ready to have a good season.

Coach Selvaggio says that her hope for a good season is fifty-fifty; she approaches this with cautious optimism.

“We plan to take this season one day, one practice, and one game at a time, but our ultimate goal is to make to nationals in Arizona,” says Selvaggio.

The Cyclones are committed, and from what she has seen during practices, and the competitive nature the team brings to the games, they are

quite close.

With a new season come new players. Selvaggio does not consider them ‘rookies’, as they have each shown a great liking to tennis, and have shown great competition both in practice and in the game.

Four new players were added to the roster, along with four returners from the previous season who have NJCAA experience.

With it being early in the season, Selvaggio doesn’t say if there are any star players on the team, but each present a unique trait. In her eyes, they are all ‘star’ players. They are a family, and they act like family when they are together on the court.

In the first scrimmage game of the Volleyball season, the Cyclones took on the Olivet Nazarene Tigers, defeating them in the last game with a score of 14 to 25.

In the second and first, it did not seem like they were gaining enough power, but towards the end of both games, they managed to pick up speed. Their game play choices affected them whilst playing in game 2 against Olivet. Toward the end, they showed Olivet what they were made of.

Setter Bridget Ferrin had a fantastic performance by achieving 33 assists, 2 kills, and 2 blocks. Outside hitter Carly Trinley, achieved 13 kills, and 2 aces. The women managed to destroy the Tigers with an ultimate save during the third to last game. After they won the second, they were tied. The excitement of the crowd sent an adrenaline rush through the players as they slammed the final point to the ground, showing that the Cyclones were victorious in their win over the Tigers.

Students receive a grand ‘welcome’

By William Lukitsch Editor-in-Chief Student Life rolled out the welcome mat for new and returning students with a two-day event, offering snacks, games, prizes, and information on clubs and organizations.

“The main point of Welcome Days is to educate, engage, and entertain,” says Student Life Manager Demetrius Robinson. Since its creation, the event has helped acclimate students with Moraine Valley Community College programs in an enjoyable, delightful environment.

Though an unfortunate bout of inclement weather cancelled a few events on Aug. 26, Welcome Days turned out to be a successful and engaging event.

Robinson explained that the rainclouds held a silver lining in the end.

“It forced us all to be under one roof,” said Robinson.

Being cooped up in the U Building didn’t stop students from participating in games and socializing with friends.

Participating local sponsors included PACE Suburban Bus Service, 101.9 FM The Mix, and Jersey Mike’s Subs.

Vendors set up shop to give away food, prizes, and inform students on the amenities available at the college.

Kim’s ‘Ten Kids Return’ debuts at DeCaprio

By William Lukitsch Editor-in-Chief Aspiring sculptor Taehoon Kim has created a unique, abstract collection of large and small-scale ceramic, steel, and wood sculptures, which evoke an intriguing perplexing subject.

On Sept. 4, Kim visited Moraine’s Robert F. DeCaprio Art Gallery to introduce his exhibit Ten Kids Return. There, he engaged attendees with a very clear-cut description of his amazing work.

Kim is currently a Master of Fine Arts Student at the Art institute of Chicago with a concentration in Ceramics. He started off as a painter before pulling his work off the wall and migrating toward 3D art. Past exhibits by Kim have featuredTen side-by-side arrangements of 2D and 3D pieces, giving a multi-faceted view of specific figures. The native Korean exemplifies an eclectic blend of contemporary eastern art with a touch of modern American influence.

A few of Kim’s sculptures feature anthropomorphic animals engaging with humans. Kim explained that inspiration for these works stems from his fascination with animal communication. His works essential explore the depths of

Kim’s sculptures range from intricate, delicate miniatures to enormous, awe-

inspiring giants. The centerpiece of this exhibit cannot be missed; a giant gray human head adorned by a yellow fourlegged creature, nestled on its crown, emphasizes the theme of human-animal communication that is stressed throughout Ten Kids Return.

Another highlight of this exhibit is the enormous red, white, and blue popsicle, which appears somewhat random compared to the rest of the exhibit. The thick running drops of glaze give the illusion that it is actually melting onto the floor.

The “family” arranged at the south wall of the gallery in height ascendingdescending order express a basic, almost primitive expression of the human form.

Raw elements and minimalist facial and expressions on the figures make them appear childish. Kim’s exhibit is beautiful, astounding, peculiar and distinct. As with all artwork, it needs to be seen firsthand to be truly appreciated.

Reading between the panels

By William Lukitsch Editor-in-Chief Moraine Valley’s first Graphic Novel Symposium (GNS) will give students a chance to explore a literary genre that has long been neglected by readers and scholars.

“We think graphic novels as a whole are underappreciated,” explained Library Department Chair Dr. Troy Swanson.

Contemporary graphic novels explore a variety of subjects, ranging far beyond your average superhero fantasy.

Artists and writers have expanded this art from to encompass themes from philosophical musings to modern interpretations of classic literature. In 1992, acclaimed graphic novelist Art Spiegelman became the first in his class to receive a Pulitzer Prize.

Swanson hopes the GNS will introduce students to a new medium of literature in a fun, engaging, and educational setting. The two-day event will include competitive games, interactive lectures, visits from local comic book shops, and a costume contest.

“It’s almost like a mini Comic-con,” explained Swanson.

The first day will feature two keynote speakers in the Library Lounge. Professor of Fine Arts Erik LaGattuta will discuss the fundamental aspects of visual storytelling, and Professor of Communications and Literature Sheryl Bundy will provide examples of graphic novels as bona fide literary works.

Chimera’s Comics, Tenth Planet, and Amazing Fantasy Books & Comics will set up shop in the L Building right outside the Library Lounge, giving students a chance to peruse classic comic titles and rare collector editions.

The Cosplay contest, organized by the Anime Club, will be held in the U Building on Sept. 18. Students are encouraged to dress up like their favorite superheroes, and awards will be given for

first, second, and third place winners.

Gaming Day will feature a lecture by Developmental Education and Geography Professor Jason King exploring, in depth, the correlation between gaming and learning. Attendees will have a chance to participate in variety of games from 12:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M. in the Library Coffee Bar. “The Library’s goal is to enhance the curriculum by providing information sources in a variety of format,” said Swanson.

The Moraine Valley Library department was recently recognized for its tremendous success with involving students in college-wide activities during the 2013 academic year. Swanson, along with the rest of the Library Department, hopes to achieve that same success with the GNS. Student Life move for awareness

By William Lukitsch Editor-in-Chief “You may not come over here, but we’ll go where you’re at,” says Student Life Manager Demetrius Robinson.

The Student Life department is taking their show on the road and bringing student run activities to buildings across the main campus from Sept. 212, in effort to raise awareness on student involvement.

U on the Move is intended to help create Moraine’s college-wide collaboration initiative. It’s all about different departments working toward a common goal of bringing students together. “[U on the Move] is a great way to promote who we are,” said Robinson.

On Sept. 3, Robinson and Student Life members set up in front of Moraine’s new Health Fitness and Recreation Center (HFRC). The Student Life booth featured a prize wheel, where participants could take a spin at a Moraine Valley t-shirt, food vouchers, and café certificates.

Student Life also brought a DJ to throw in the mix. Passers by were met with catchy pop tunes like Pharell William’s “Happy” and Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” as students went headto-head at the volleyball nets.

Diener steps aside of norms in Sehnsucht

By Samantha Doory Staff Writer Sehnsucht by Barbara Diener explores the idea of what home is through documentary photography.

Twelve years ago, Diener moved from a small rural town in Germany to the US. Using photography as her medium she began to convey her own feelings of displacement and longing for home.

Her work is currently on display in the F building.

Diener’s unusual use of documentary photography in the contemporary art world draws the viewer in, but it is also very objective and loses a feeling of uniqueness immediately. Many of her photos are repetitive, mundane, and look like they should be in a history book rather than an art show. But that’s always a risk factor to take into consideration when working with documentary photography.

The series was set up in a way that is very different from how it would normally be displayed, which really effects how the viewer interprets the images.

The series of photographs is supposed to be shown as a photo book, which is

much more intimate than the window display that was used. It took away from the idea and made it much harder to connect to. The photos almost seemed unrelated, which forced a lot of false connections that fade quickly. It also appeared segregated and awkward to follow.

That doesn’t mean the show was necessarily bad, if you look past all the landscape photography, you begin to notice the quality of the images. She breaks some traditional norms in photography by not editing the size of her images; one or two of her prints had multiple photos on them with corners overlapping and some even have scrawled text super imposed onto them. By breaking these norms she creates a much more captivating photo that evokes questioning on what domesticated life actually means.

At first glance her photos seem too conventional, and if you don’t give them enough time you’ll speed through them.

Giving them a second or even third time around you’ll start to realize how somber and haunting these images really are. Several of them almost blur together, but there are many that will need SEHNSUCHT | page 7

By Joshua Mira Staff Writer When one thinks of a movie that could be potentially successful, one would normally think of summer blockbusters with A-List actors, a gigantic budget and a lot of explosions or a properly paced, thematic and philosophically introspective film that grabs the critics’ attention and refuses to let go.

“Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” is a movie that tries to replicate the qualities that make Box Office record setters so well received. Unfortunately, Sin City fails to deliver on these promises due to a lack of adequate marketing and the fact that the movie is just 9 years too late.

Directed by Robert Rodriguez, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For follows the story of multiple protagonists in a Pulp Fiction-esque portrayal; that is to say, the movie has numerous subplots occurring at the same time between the multiple characters, but still manages to have an overarching main plot.

However, this is problem number one for the film. The movie itself is presented with a very striking black and white visual contrast, in respect for the film noir roots the original comic was based in. Unfortunately, for all of the style that was presented in the film, the storytelling fails to explain key plot elements while transitioning between the multiple subplots, leaving the audience hanging at points.

Another difficulty that the movie has is with dialogue and acting. Famous Hollywood celebrities Mickey Rourke, Josh Brolin, and Bruce Willis are all starring in this film, but the scenes that they are in are riddled with hammy, cringe-worthy dialogue and then immediately offset by the stylistic gore of certain scenes, leading a bad case of mood whiplash.

The biggest mistake that the film made is trying to live up to the hype and excitement generated by the first movie.

The original Sin City, released in 2005, was well received by critics at the time and generated over $158 million during the course of its run. Compare this to the newest Sin City, which barely generated $7 million during its opening weekend, as well as receiving scathing reviews from numerous publications.

This, in part, is due to the fact that many of the tricks that Rodriguez used in this film were already seen in the last film. As well, the stunning visuals and novel concept of a modern film noir movie were later adapted to films which took inspiration from the first film. In other words, not only have we seen these same tricks before, but now we’ve seen them better performed in other movies.

We cannot place the blame on Rodriguez’s shoulders alone. Marketing for this movie was also lackluster, resulting

Weak marketing as was exemplified here, coupled with the fact that the movie re-uses many film and literary techniques shown in other mediums,

resulted in a weak start and universal panning.

Despite all of this, “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” is a nice experience for those not versed in the first movie, or this type of film noir in general. The thing is, for

those of us who have already seen the first movie, or films similar in style to it, its just nine years too late.

Emmy’s can’t maintain momentum

By Brandie Lorenzen Staff Writer The one thing most would want to do on a Monday night is nothing, but a surprise came when the statistics came in; the Emmys reeled in nearly 17.6 million viewers.

With such a positive introduction, most would think that the Emmys would have an entertaining route, but it did not live up to most peoples’ expectations. The opening credits held up anticipation, and kept the audience flow going up until the commercial breaks. As in most award shows, people expect to be wowed with current top performers.

Nonetheless, most of the viewers from across the country were left dozing off, and barely an ounce of excitement. The fun only seemed to occur once the host, Seth Meyers, or an A-List comedic actor

The series is very open for interpretation, although it does guide you to two main themes, which are yearning and rural life.

“I don’t want to dictate what the viewer experiences,” Diener stated at her artist talk on Sept. 2.

Most art is considered to be subjective, meaning the viewer takes what

or actress came on to entertain the audience.

Meyers is a comedic genius, one that is worth the wait and one who is greatly adored around the country, and the world. He left the hugely popular television show, Saturday Night Live, and now stars on his own show. For a Monday night, he made the most of it by lightly complimenting the audience, and throwing a few witty remarks.

The presentations for the nominees were not the best. Not every nominee got a video to introduce the character that they portray for many. The next time any nominees come onto the awards show, they must be warned—they will probably not get a video introduction, but a five second cameo.

The list of categories was intimidating; mainly because of so many entries that were submitted into the awards show, and this is something that Primetime should take note of—less categories equals happier audiences, more categories equals less viewers tuning in. The categories were competitive, and very strong this year; the votes were pouring in, and these were the overalls: Ty Burrell (Breaking Bad) won for best Supporting Comedic actor; Louie Zakarian (Saturday Night Live) won for best oncamera makeup; Allison Janney (Masters of Sex; Mom) won for best Dramatic and Comedic actor in a drama and comedic series; Eric Drysdale (The Daily Show with John Stewart) won for best writing on a comedic variety, or music show; and Allison Tolman (Fargo) won for best supporting actress in a miniseries or movie.

The one thing that really kept everyone watching was the tribute to another comedic genius, Robin Williams. The tribute was beautiful, but was immediately cut off as soon as the show was wrapping up. Many were hoping to see the tribute somewhere in the middle of the show, not the end.

On a side note, the Emmy’s are worth the watch, but not if there are a lot of categories and not enough entertainment to keep the audience awake. The breaks in-between the categories would’ve been great with at least more of a variety, instead of just actors.
