Jenkins sworn in as president By Amel Saleh Editor-in-Chief Moraine Valley Community College welcomes in a new college President, Dr. Sylvia Jenkins. Jenkins was announced as the selected candidate on April 30. Dr. Sylvia Jenkins, current vice president of Academic Affairs at Moraine Valley, will become the fifth president of Moraine Valley Community College. The Board of Trustees formally approved the appointment at its meeting on May 9. She will replace Dr. Vernon O. Crawley, who retires June 30 after 21 years as college president. “We are extremely pleased we could find an outstanding candidate at the college who we believe best suits the academic, administrative and funding challenges that we face in the future. We are confident that Dr. Jenkins will build on the many successes at Moraine Valley and lead the college to new heights in the future,” Joseph Murphy, chairman of the Board of Trustees, said in the announcement. Dr. Jenkins began her ca-

reer as a librarian at Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia. Her career began at Moraine Valley in 1986 as an adjunct librarian in the Public Services area of the college’s Learning Resource Center. In 1988, Sylvia was hired as a full-time faculty librarian at Moraine Valley. In 1995, she was appointed library coordinator and subsequently, department chair of the Library. As a faculty member, she served on many committees, including the Faculty Development Committee, the Faculty Evaluation team, the Vanguard Learning College team, and as a member of the Faculty Association Executive Committee. In 2001, Dr. Jenkins was selected to serve as the assistant dean, Center for Teaching and Learning and Director of the Library. In 2003, she was appointed dean, Academic Development and Learning Resources. During that time, Sylvia successfully established the award-winning Center for Teaching and Learning, and led the library staff and faculty in the redesign of the college’s library.

MVCC hosts panel discussion on eating disorders By William Shaw Views Editor

“Not everyone realizes it, but eating disorders are a form of self-injury,” proclaimed professor Nicholas Shizas before those that had gathered for the eating disorders panel. Held on May 2, students gathered to learn more about the eating disorders that plague our modern day society. The panel itself consisted of six experts in eating disorders that included a psychologist, dietician, and even a victim of eating disorders. Before even getting in-depth with the topic, the panel began defining what eating disorders were, and the different types of disorders including anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating.

They also made it a point to make sure that everyone knew eating disorders don’t just develop because of a lack of selfconfidence. While it is a factor, you also have to keep in mind stress, unrealistic expectations of beauty and even family dynamics. The rise of eating disorders is due in no small part to the unrealistic expectations of beauty our society has been bombarded with. With images that have been photo shopped upwards of 40-50 times it’s no surprise how skewed our society’s views of what’s ideal are. “We get conflicting messages from our society’s media” says Katarzyna Blahusiak, a sociology professor. “One side says you must diet to look good
