Jenkins sworn in as president

By Amel Saleh Editor-in-Chief Moraine Valley Community College welcomes in a new college President, Dr. Sylvia Jenkins. Jenkins was announced as the selected candidate on April 30.

Dr. Sylvia Jenkins, current vice president of Academic Affairs at Moraine Valley, will become the fifth president of Moraine Valley Community College. The Board of Trustees formally approved the appointment at its meeting on May 9. She will replace Dr. Vernon O. Crawley, who retires June 30 after 21 years as college president.

“We are extremely pleased we could find an outstanding candidate at the college who we believe best suits the academic, administrative and funding challenges that we face in the future. We are confident that Dr. Jenkins will build on the many successes at Moraine Valley and lead the college to new heights in the future,” Joseph Murphy, chairman of the Board of Trustees, said in the announcement.

Dr. Jenkins began her ca-

reer as a librarian at Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia. Her career began at Moraine Valley in 1986 as an adjunct librarian in the Public Services area of the college’s Learning Resource Center. In 1988, Sylvia was hired as a full-time faculty librarian at Moraine Valley. In 1995, she was appointed library coordinator and subsequently, department chair of the Library. As a faculty member, she served on many committees, including the Faculty Development Committee, the Faculty Evaluation team, the Vanguard Learning College team, and as a member of the Faculty Association Executive Committee.

In 2001, Dr. Jenkins was selected to serve as the assistant dean, Center for Teaching and Learning and Director of the Library. In 2003, she was appointed dean, Academic Development and Learning Resources. During that time, Sylvia successfully established the award-winning Center for Teaching and Learning, and led the library staff and faculty in the redesign of the college’s library.

MVCC hosts panel discussion on eating disorders

“Not everyone realizes it, but eating disorders are a form of self-injury,” proclaimed professor Nicholas Shizas before those that had gathered for the eating disorders panel.

Held on May 2, students gathered to learn more about the eating disorders that plague our modern day society. The panel itself consisted of six experts in eating disorders that included a psychologist, dietician, and even a victim of eating disorders.

Before even getting in-depth with the topic, the panel began defining what eating disorders were, and the different types of disorders including anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating.

They also made it a point to make sure that everyone knew eating disorders don’t just develop because of a lack of selfconfidence. While it is a factor, you also have to keep in mind stress, unrealistic expectations of beauty and even family dynamics.

The rise of eating disorders is due in no small part to the unrealistic expectations of beauty our society has been bombarded with. With images that have been photo shopped upwards of 40-50 times it’s no surprise how skewed our society’s views of what’s ideal are.

“We get conflicting messages from our society’s media” says Katarzyna Blahusiak, a sociology professor. “One side says you must diet to look good

Eating disorders aren’t purely physical. The suffering one experiences through them can be extremely mental as well. Many people who suffer from disorders like anorexia and bulimia also tend to suffer from OCD as well. Top that off with many who suffer from these disorders usually finding themselves addicted to diet pills, and it’s not hard to see how important it is to treat them right away.

“Not any therapist can deal with eating disorders,” says Kelly Ryan, a professional counselor. “Since they don’t know how to deal with the physical aspects of it, many wind up dealing with only the mental aspects. Since they don’t necessarily intervene with a patient’s diets, they can actually make the disorder itself worse.”

Throughout the panel, the group of experts that had come constantly laid to

rest many of the misconceptions people have about eating disorders. Many believe that the majority of those that suffer from eating disorders are usually bigger than the average size, or are women.

The fact of the matter is that’s not necessarily true, as men and women of all ages and sizes suffer from a wide variety of disorders.

“One of the worst things you can possibly say to someone who admits to having an disorder is saying that they’re ‘too thin’ or that they look great,” admits Stephanie Ciucci, a dietician. “It unintentionally reinforces the victim’s behavior.”

Whether we like it or not, eating disorders are a growing epidemic in our country. If knowledge is power, we all should strive to know as much as we can so that one day we can stop it.

Student shares story A Moraine Valley student shares her story of sexual assault to offer support to those who may face a similar challenge in their lives.

MORAINE VALLEY STUDENT | ANONYMOUS Every school has a place where students go to hang out. At Moraine, it is the U building. But in said building, something happened. Something that not a lot of people know about, an exclusive club if you will. However, this is not a club you want to be part of. This club has a dark secret. The secret is that in the U building, the hang out of Moraine, a student was sexually assaulted.

That student was me.

It seemed like a typical day. On Tuesday, February 8, 2011, I finished my class and went to U, as many students do. I met up with some friends and we went into the lounge. There were three seats and four people. My friend, always trying to be a suave ladies’ man, tried to get me to sit on his lap. Me, having no interest in him and never wanting to, suggested splitting the seat. If not that, I would just stand.

Things were going fine for awhile.

However, after about half an hour, things took a turn for the worst. He reached over and put his hand on my crotch. He squeezed three times in rapid succession and made a squeaky, “woot woot” sound each time he squeezed.

The third squeeze, he held on. I glared at him and moved his hand. I told him if he did that again, he would be in a body bag in a morgue labeled Caucasian male.

I thought he got the hint.

He was saying I was just saying that because I didn’t want to do it in public.

The truth is, I didn’t want it at all. But according to him, all girls gave in eventually. After all, he was irresistible (in his eyes anyways).

Somewhere between ten and twenty minutes later, he did it again. This time, he was squeezing even harder. I just left, going outside and waiting for my ride outside.

Some of you might be thinking, “Why didn’t you scream? Why didn’t you punch him?” Truth is, I froze. I’m not proud to admit it, but I froze. My mom always told me what to do in situations like this. I listened, but I never thought it would happen to me. Yet when it did, I was helpless.

I’m not writing this for a “poor me” story. I’m writing this to raise awareness about sexual assault. It can happen to anybody, males included. I’m not someone who dresses in a provocative way; I wear hoodies and sweat pants. It still happened.

If you were sexually assaulted, I want you to remember something: IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT. YOU DID NOTHING TO CAUSE THIS. I know, you might wonder what you did, if you could have some-

how prevented it. The answer is no, you couldn’t have. Once that person had their mind made up, there was no changing it. Another thing to remember is YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Let me repeat that: YOU ARE NOT ALONE. I felt like I was, but there are so many people out there who have gone through what you have.

Something else you might not want to do is tell people. You’re ashamed, embarrassed, confused, scared, and just have a plethora of emotions running through your head. If you don’t tell someone, the person who did this to you can keep doing it to other people.

When I finally told my parents (about four months later), it was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. I broke down crying, was an emotional wreck, and positive my parents would think differently of me. They didn’t. Instead, they admired my courage and bravery for telling them.

I thought after I told my parents, things would get better. For awhile, they did. Then came the end of September to about mid-October. The person who sexually assaulted me posted my number around saying I’m a whore who is easy and gives great sex. I love this, seeing as how I’m a virgin.

I’m taking a minute to clarify something. Just because I was sexually assaulted DOES NOT MEAN I WAS RAPED. There is a difference. Sexual assault is any unwanted advances, be it verbal or physical that makes the person uncomfortable. It could be calling a person a whore or inappropriate grabbing.

Rape is forcing or unconsented sex.

As things got worse, I brought it to court. Luckily, I was able to get a restraining order from this person. It doesn’t mean I have a happy ending. I still have nightmares, I freak out when I see a car similar to his, and if someone comes up behind me and I’m not expecting it I will freak out. Plus I go to counseling once a week.

It is getting better though. By going through this, it has made me a stronger person. I now advocate for sexual assault awareness. I am still scared, but I don’t let it prevent me from living me life.

Fees at MVCC on the rise for Fall 2012 Phillip A. Bianco Staff Writer Student fees at Moraine Valley Community College will increase beginning in the fall of 2012.

The total cost per credit hour for students living within Moraine’s district will be $121; $104 for tuition and $17 in fees. Currently, tuition and fees combined are $108 per credit hour for local students. Total costs for out-of-district students will go from $255 to $275 per credit hour. International and Out-ofState students will see their payment rise to $311 per credit hour.

The increase in cost is the result of a Board of Trustees meeting on February 22 in which the members approved a construction/infrastructure improvement fee.

According to Andrew Duren, Executive V.P of Administrative Services at MVCC, a number of Illinois community colleges already charge a fee similar to the one approved by the board.

He also said that the funds collected from it will be appropriated for “capital projects” in order to numb the budget wounds inflicted by the states lack of

funding.

In other words, the money will be used to improve, repair and build infrastructure at the college.

The Health Education and Wellness Center is the first project the fee will fund. Some students have expressed concern over the new tariff. Scott Sirvinskis is a freshman who will be returning to Moraine this fall. When asked about the fee he said, “It’s b******, I don’t want to pay extra to fund something that I’ll probably never get to use.”

Others believe the increase is necessary to continually improve the experience at Moraine. Nursing student April Gallik said, “We’ve got to keep the school running and able to provide for the needs of the students, if it means raising the tuition then I am all for it.”

Another student pointed out that Moraine’s tuition is still lower than that of its competitors such as the College of DuPage.

There are also many students who are frustrated because they feel that the student body did not have a say in the process of creating this new fee.

member, who asked to remain anonymous, said, “Students are often marginalized in big decisions like the fee raise. They need to have more of a say in how their college is run because it has a huge affect on their lives.”

Prior to the board’s decision the school ran focus groups to meet with students and gauge their opinions on

the planned wellness center which included discussing student fees.

It was reported to the board that these focus groups resulted in an overwhelming show of support and lack of concern.

People gather aroung the globe for May Day Phillip A. Bianco Staff Writer People across the globe took to the streets to celebrate and protest on the first of May. Why? Because this is the date of an international holiday known as May Day. In the United States, May Day is commonly mistaken as a festival invented by communists or socialists, but in reality it has its roots in America.

On May 1, 1886, workers across the U.S peacefully took to the streets to demand better working conditions. It is because of the efforts of these brave citizens that we have the eight-hour work day. This is why May Day is celebrated annually all across the globe.

Some have called it, “the real labor day.” Chicago was at the center of this push for workers rights and had an estimated 40,000 people go on strike that historical day. Exactly 126 years later, the American people once again took to the streets to demand their rights be met. In Chicago specifically, thousands of people marched through the heart of the city which is set to host the NATO summit at the end of

May. The protests began with a trek through the Loop to Union Park on West Randolph street where a rally was held.

The demonstration started out small with around 1,000 protestors, but swelled to approximately 2,000 people along the way to Federal Plaza which they marched to at 1:30pm. Union members, socialists, communists, anti-war activists and concerned citizens alike were in attendance. The focus of the march seemed to be labor and immigrant rights. Moraine is certified platinum on main campus

By Connor Reynolds News Editor The Moraine Valley campus was honored with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum Certification.

This is the highest level of certification a green building can obtain, and gives Moraine Valley the platinum certification on two campuses as the Southwest Education Center was honored earlier this year The stated purpose of LEED is to offer building owners and operators a definite structure for finding and maintaining a practical means of building design, construction and maintenance.

The Moraine Valley campus met all the LEED prerequisites and met the performance goals within each environmental category including: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality in order to score the appropriate points to achieve platinum status/certification.

Should kids be exposed to mature media?

“No, it can negatively affect a child’s mental capacity.”

Sean McDermott is the Sports Editor for The Glacier. He is currently planning on majoring in broadcast journalism. He is also an avid contributer to the sports media blog Bleacher Report. He plans on becoming a sports reporter.

Pimps, alcohol, guns, drugs and blood; sounds like the perfect environment for children doesn’t it? While some unfortunate souls reside there, millions of innocent minds are exposed to these images on the tube.

In today’s world children under 18 shouldn’t be allowed to interact with mature video games/movies. Most mature media involve excessive gore and sexual themes that are inappropriate for children.

The glorification of death can lead to serious consequences in a child’s life.

Although not scientifically proven, I firmly believe playing these video games and watching the violent and sexual images all forms of media have can lead to destructive behavior in children.

If a child performs sexual or violent actions in a video game, or sees it done on TV or in the movies, numerous amounts of time they can very well feel that they

can rightfully perform these actions outside of his or her virtual world.

In 2003, 18-year-old Devin Moore gunned down two police officers and a 911 dispatcher. Before gunning the three men down, Moore was brought in on suspicion of stealing a car. According to surveillance videos, the teenager was being booked before he lunged an officer’s .40-caliber Glock automatic and shot the officer in the head.

He then shot the other officer and killed the dispatcher with five shots.

Moore, who had no previous criminal records then grabbed a set of car keys and drove off in a police cruiser.

Sounds familiar right? Before the incident Moore was heavily involved with the murder and mayhem video game Grand Theft Auto according to his family. As police were interviewing Moore after the murders he said, “Life is like a video game. Everybody’s got to die sometime.” This is just one many accounts of violence caused by violent media.

said, “When a young man with a developing brain spends hours and hours watching or rehearsing violent acts, and is put in a situation of emotional stress there’s a likelihood that he will literally go to that familiar pattern that’s been wired repeatedly, perhaps thousands and thousands of times.”

The teenage brain is different compared to an adult’s. That is because the prefrontal cortex beginning to grow.

The prefrontal cortex is the part of your brain that orchestrates thoughts and actions. It that makes us think ahead and consider consequences. The full growth of the prefrontal cortex isn’t completed until your early 20’s.

Not every child is going hurt people because they have played a violent game, but parents have a responsibility to keep mature content away from their child. After all, there are rating systems for a reason.

By William Shaw Views Editor We’ve all been there. Who remembers all the times when you were growing up, you wanted to see whatever it is that your older sibling or even your parents were watching?

More often than not, your curiosity was shot down. “You’re not old enough” they probably exclaimed. Is that right though? Were they honestly right to say that you weren’t old enough to handle it, or was there something more to it than just that?

Let me ask you all something: When was the first time you saw an R-rated movie? Maybe played an Mrated video game? I think it’s a safe assumption to make saying that all of us, myself included, didn’t exactly wait for the “recommended age” before we engaged in such media. Now did playing or watching that mature content make you into some crazed person with a skewed sense of reality?

Probably not, and that brings me to my main point. It’s not necessarily a bad thing to expose kids to mature content; in fact, it could even be a good thing. Now I’m not telling you to go make all the young ones in the world go watch the entire “Saw” series or hardcore pornography. That would be reckless and irresponsible.

What I’m trying to say is that you need to gauge what your child sees based their maturity, and slowly expose them to everything in this world.

Playing the hero and never letting them see everything our society offers, including mature media, would serve only to make adjusting to life harder.

Yes, you should absolutely protect your kid from some of the mature content out there, but there’s no better way to get them to understand than to honestly communicate with them. Instead of shutting them down altogether, tell them the important difference between fiction and reality. How just because someone does something in a movie,

doesn’t make it okay to do in real life.

Kids are much smarter than we as adults give them credit for. With the time I spent teaching children, I’ve come to the realization that they respond best to open communication. Instead of treating them like little dumb people, we have to treat them like an equal person. It’s human nature; everyone will react more positively to someone who levels with them instead of someone who orders them around.

In the end it all comes down to balance. Now if you’re watching something horrifying by adult standards, get the kid out of there. But if you’re watching that new “Family Guy” or “South Park” episode, take a chance. Instead of kicking little Timmy to the curb, watch it with him every step of the way, and use it as a catalyst for learning. You might be surprised to see what he takes away from it all.

By Bill Droel MVCC Campus Minister “We have to put systems into place to prevent this from ever happening again.” So spoke a government official investigating the dalliance of several Secret Service agents and Special Service officers in Cartagena, Columbia.

This case, which has spread to El Salvador and elsewhere, is hardly the most serious breach of workplace ethics in a day that includes fraud on the part of hundreds of mortgage bankers, bribery and lying by many Walmart executives and grievous mismanagement by scores of bishops. I use the Columbia episode only as a case study on the state of moral education.

I am sorry to tell our government that no “system,” no rule book, nor any protocol will prevent workers from behaving badly. Exemplary behavior is the

result of virtue. Lacking it, everyone with an underdeveloped conscience is susceptible to group-induced or situation-suggested hijinks. Only people who have appropriate moral formation can resist “going along” in a situation where the behavior is inappropriate.

Let me first clear away some silly distinctions. Both investigators and the disgraced agents in this case distinguish prostitutes from girlfriends.

Apparently, the behavior is more egregious or more threatening to national security if the women involved are prostitutes. If the agents did not pay or agree to pay the women (who are then called “girlfriends” or, as we once said, “pickups”), then official punishment is less severe, even no punishment at all.

In other words, the government’s interest is not immoral behavior as such.

(Sorting out this distinction occasioned some amusing questions directed to the women and their lawyers.)

All three parties (the investigators, the agents and the women) also make a distinction between escort and prostitute. The escort, apparently and amusingly, means $800 or more; the prostitute label means less than $250.

Although there is no moral difference between the two, the distinction will appear in legal records because the escapade first went public when one woman and one agent argued over the

difference between escort and prostitute.

Everyone whose job takes them away from home experiences some stress.

Salespeople and executives probably have less stress than government employees on a special mission; soldiers in combat areas are under extreme, maybe undue, stress.

Workers away from home frequently relieve some stress with alcohol in a convivial setting, perhaps including drinking with a person(s) of the opposite sex. This is usually appropriate.

And to be clear, the entertainment industry, including hotel bars, is legitimate and to a degree contributes to a wholesome society. Nor, should all the focus be on one individual or another.

When there is corruption in an institution or when an environment tolerates immorality, it becomes harder for an individual to do the correct thing. As each individual sins, the environment becomes more immoral for the next person. In other words, some regions of some cities and, in particular, some bars in those regions are temptations to out-of-town workers.

Any instance of casual sex is wrong because both parties become objects in an act that of its nature is inter-subjective. The purpose of sex is built-into the act of sex and treating it casually perverts its meaning. Further, casual sex frequently betrays third parties: the

families of both parties, for example.

In the Columbia instance, prostitution, like slavery, is always wrong. It is nonsense to say that the local economy benefits from tourists who buy sex.

It is wrong-headed, though not surprising, to hear a government official require systems to be put in place “to prevent this happening again.” The official, like many in our society, does not understand that morality is imprinted in human nature.

It does not come from situations or employee handbooks. The only antidote to immorality is people of character; people who behave honorably and who are credits to our country, when it is easy and when it is difficult.

Virtue can be taught. Honor, character and virtue are covered in the basic training for nearly all service personnel. Indeed, many public servants take an oath or a pledge to uphold the best in our society. But if those public servants and all other workers were not sufficiently educated in intellect and habit, they cannot consistently choose right over wrong.

Each person, including your Glacier columnist, sins. But the person with an adult conscience knows when he or she falters and is capable of admitting the mistake and growing because of it.

Is the IMAP cut really a bad thing? The time for graduation is at hand!

By David Alexander Staff Writer Doomsday finally arrived for the Illinois Monetary Assistance Program (IMAP). It officially ran out of cash and left thousands of students statewide and at Moraine Valley Community College in the lurch.

The program which helps about 140,000 qualified students annually to offset the cost of college education has always been run on a “first come first serve” basis. But with the sclerotizing of the economy, the number of applicants has skyrocketed while funds for the program have gotten worse.

Perhaps the cutting of the IMAP was just a matter of time. As financial woes continue to worsen our economy, it was only a matter of time before students in Illinois were caught in the crossfire.

In a state that is always broke and dependent on deficit spending to meet its basic fiscal responsibilities, it was more than wishful thinking to assume that IMAP’s annual $380 million largess would not get cut.

Illinois projects a revenue in-take of $94 billion in 2012 and spending of $124 billion for the same period! A great gulf, and so it follows that there has to be a weaning of the populace from the unrealistic notion that an omniscient, all providing government

can cater to every whim, from cradle to grave. It hasn’t worked anywhere before, it won’t work now.

This editorial is being written with the background of politicians making noise about student loans. It is important to note that community colleges as a whole are very low cost.

Take Moraine Valley Community College; the rate for an in-district student is $99 per credit hour. Toss in textbooks that cost about $100 and the total cost for a 2 credit hour, 16 week class is $300! Most students can afford this but don’t want to. They have come to expect the nanny state to cater for them educationally and otherwise.

Perhaps it’s not such a bad thing IMAP went broke, because it might also boost the graduation rates. At Moraine Valley, the current graduation rate is 18%! Why? An underlying reason may be that many of those who do not graduate are those who have the government paying the bill in the form of IMAP. Students who pay from their pockets generally graduate faster.

But in the final analysis, the IMAP will be soon reinstated, and things will return to the abnormal normal eventually.

By Ogechi Emechebe Staff Writer With graduation right around the corner, students who are transferring to a four-year university to continue their education have a big step to take after Moraine.

Transferring to a university from a junior college is huge, and proper preparation needs to be taken to achieve success. Colleges and universities are different and many students may experience a culture shock when they first begin their education at a new school.

For starters, Moraine is much smaller compared to a large university like University Of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, which consists of over 30,000 students.

Transferring to a four-year school is almost similar to a freshman starting their collegiate journey. Transfers are overwhelmed with a whole new atmosphere, thousands of new faces seen every day, independence, housing, lectures, etc. Anyone who begins at a community college has it much easier than those who began at a university.

In community college, students have more flexible schedules and can have a job on top of being a full time student. They also have time to focus on what they want to major in if they’re undecided. A con to community college

is lack of student involvement – students come and go as they please and there aren’t many community events that bring everyone together. Students enter community college with their high school friends and rarely are new friendships made.

A pro for going straight to a university from high school is maturity and freedom. Students get the taste of living in a parent free zone and learn how to be independant, make decisions, and act like adults.

A huge downfall to this though is that many students don’t grow up, skip class, and basically are not ready for the responsibility. Their grades may suffer severely the first year and at times they are pulled out from a university and enrolled in junior college to refocus.

I started my college journey at Moraine and although my experience wasn’t the best, I was able to figure out my career path and earn good grades.

I’m proud to say that I am graduating with a 3.8 GPA – that exceeds my wildest dreams. I worked hard and will continue to do so when I continue transfer to DePaul University in the fall.

To all the students who are graduating on the 18th, I wish you all the best of luck on your roads to success!

Unfortunate showing in nationals

By Frank Gogola Staff Writer The Cyclones completed a 360 degree turnaround from last season as they turned a 0-8 team into a 6-2 team, that qualified for the NJCAA National Championship.

The team was instantly boosted to an entirely new level when Nicole Selvaggio, a Marist High School star singles player and top 30 female tennis player in the state, signed a letter of intent to play at Moraine Valley.

With new vigor, energy and enthusiasm surrounding the team, the Cyclones opened up their 2011 season on a four-game winning streak. They then faced their stiffest competition at that point and lost two close games to College of DuPage and College of Lake County.

The team rebounded and won their last two games of the regular season to finish with a 6-2 record, a complete turnaround from last season’s 0-8 mark. The Cyclones 4-1 conference record secured them a second-place finish in the ISCC and a high seed in the Region IV tournament.

The women’s tennis team had an exceptional 2012 campaign.

[Rick Hoppenrath] In the Region IV tournament the Cyclones battled through each match and overcame solid play by their opponents in order to finish in second place, right behind champion College of DuPage.

Their second-place finish earned them a birth into the national tournament.

That was October 8, 2011. They had a seven-month layoff to prepare for the national tournament in May 2012.

They began their layoff by stocking up awards. Veronica Canseco and Sophie Baxter made the All-Conference team, and Kasha Harmata and Shayna Binette earned All-Region IV team honCoach Bill Finn’s men’s tennis team took home first-place in the Region IV tournament qualifying them for another national tournament.

Garnering the most awards was standout singles player Nicole Selvaggio. She made the All-Conference team and earned All-Region IV team honors.

She was also named the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Player of the Year and the All-Region IV Player of the Year.

“This was the best women’s tennis team we’ve had, and we have the best individual player we’ve ever had in Selvaggio,” said Head Coach Bill Finn, following the end of the season in October. “This is a great group. They were dedicated at every practice and really took to the coaching.”

Despite the praise and awards the players have rightfully earned, they continued to work harder as they strive for a good showing at nationals.

Unfortunately, the Cyclones placed last in the 2012 NJCAA D1 Women’s Tennis National Championship gaining one point. The ever-improving Cyclones will look to avenge their last place finish next year and improve their placing.

Jake Murray Right Fielder Baseball

By Sean McDermott Sports Editor Jake Murray has played above and beyond his potential this season. Murray batted .344, with 11 doubles, two triples, one home run along with 31 runs and 26 RBI’s.

Murray impressive 2012 campagin earned him a scholarship to play at Lewis University. After this season Murray will continue his baseball career as he signed a letter of intent to become a Lewis Flyer.

Murray will look to keep his hot-bat going as he and the Cyclones begin the Region IV tournament May 12-13.

Stephanie Ruvalcaba Outfielder Softball

Stephanie Ruvalcaba is a secondyear player on the softball team.

The Argo alum had an impressive 2012 season. Ruvalcaba batted .307 with 11 doubles, three triples, three home runsalong with 33 RBI’s and 29 runs.

Ruvalcaba was one of the key players for the Cyclones this year. Her impressive defense and offense contributions helped the Cyclones clinch a second consecutive 20-win season.

Ruvalcaba’s glove and bat will surely be missed next season as she will be leaving Moraine Valley Community College. Ruvalcaba’s strong play and effort will mold the minds of the freshman players who will return to the Cyclones next year.

Small-ball the key to victory for Cyclones

By Sean McDermott Sports Editor If you cover the Cyclones record up and look at their season stats it’s hard to believe that they are only 17-25-1. As evident by the last few games, the Cyclones have caught fire.

When assistant coach Jon Drahos was appointed the team’s interim head coach on April 9, the Cyclones season looked bleak. At the time the Cyclones had a record of 7-131. Since, Drahos has incorporated a small ball approach to the Cyclones play the team has gone 10-12.

“We preach the small game,” said coach Drahos. “Stealing bases and bunting is our team identity.”

The Cyclones currently have 108 stolen bases as a team averaging 2.6 swipes per game.

“It’s something I’ve picked up from my years at the University of Illinois-Chicago,” commented Drahos. “What we do in this program is run. Regardless of your individual speed you’re going to be stealing bags.”

In baseball, hitting, pitching and defense is what is needed to be successful. “It’s a matter of getting all three components of the game connecting at the same time,” said Drahos. “If we get all three

In the past few games the Cyclones have put together the three components of baseball and have beaten tough teams in McHenry County College, Prairie State College and Milwaukee Area Technical College who have a combined 97-51 record.

The Cyclones are starting to bud at the right time.

“Throughout my career my

teams always perform very well towards the end of the season,” said Drahos.

In the last ten games the Cyclones have gone 5-5, but before judging that record you have to look at how well they’ve played. All of the losses except one were closely contested games.

The Cyclones are in the Oakton Sectional for the Region IV tournament. The Cyclones own a number nine seed, as

they will take on the number four seeded Oakton Community College and five seed Prairie State College. “I believe this is anybody’s regional,” said Drahos. “Right now, we are playing close to very good baseball.

We are getting consistent outings and efforts throughout the course of a game.”

The Cyclones are growing in strength and are a force to be reckoned with in the Region IV tournament. “I’m excited

to compete and I believe we’re up for the challenge,” said Drahos.

There’s a Cyclone Warning for the Region IV area, teams should expect large amounts of hits, stolen bases and runs.

The warning will be in effect until May 20 at the Region IV championships.

Softball team ends year on a high note

In sports no matter the level of competition, a sub-.500 record is almost always indica-

tive of a failed season, but this was not the case for the 2012 women’s softball team.

After a deep run in the Region IV tournament, the Cyclones compiled an overall

record of 20-25-1 this season.

Despite the losing record, they clinched their second consecutive 20-win season under head coach Mike Veen.

Following a two-game winning streak to end the season, the Cyclones opened up the Region IV tournament quarterfinals against McHenry County College.

“The team looked pretty confident going in to the tournament,” said coach Veen. “We were looking forward to the challenge.”

Moraine Valley and McHenry split the first two games of the series, leading the Cyclones to their first elimination game of the tournament. The bats came alive in game three, as the Cyclones dominated the Fighting Scots 20-7.

Moving on to the semifinals, the Cyclones lost a

close 2-0 game to powerhouse Kankakee. They had a chance to redeem themselves in their second elimination game of the tournament, this time against Oakton Community College. The Cyclones once again swung the bats well, as they beat the Raiders 8-4.

Facing yet another elimination game the Cyclones fell to the Pioneers of Prairie State 5-3. They finished their season in the semi-finals of the double elimination tournament. The Cyclones finished the tournament in third place.

Despite a not so beautiful record, the team’s hard work and strong play throughout the season and the Region IV tournament proved that they could hang with the best of teams.

“Overall, the season went pretty well,” said coach Veen.

“It wasn’t that bad at all.”

Looking forward to next season the Cyclones are anticipating an even more successful season.

“We will be starting next season with a good core of players,” said coach Veen. “We will be looking to add more pitching for the next season.

But we are in pretty good shape heading forward into the offseason.”

This season, the Cyclones proved that a record is not always that indicative of how good a team truly is.

Their record on paper did not look that amazing, but they proved their strength and their will to continue on and persevere as they finished up yet another “successful” season under the direction of head coach Mike Veen.

Student Life Awards at Casino Night!

By Nicole Bracken Editorial Assistant “High Stakes. Higher Rewards,” was the tagline of this year’s casino night themed Student Life Award banquet that was held at the Lexington House on Friday, May 4.

Students and staff were dressed to impress as Dr. Yolanda Isaacs welcomed everyone to a night of celebrating accomplishments and Taylor Brooks entertained the audience with her “No Baby Boom” speech. Following that, Krista Meyers, the 2010 Moraine Valley Leadership Award Recipient gave a speech encouraging students to follow their dreams and never give up.

As dinner was being served, the “Song of Inspiration,” a tradition that began two years ago, was played. This year’s song was “My Wish,” by Rascal Flatts. At the conclusion of dinner, the awards were proudly presented to the clubs, organi-

only such tunes can provide.

This concert was one to remember – the eclectic mix of new and old with classics and a few modern tunes kept the audience listening throughout.

Joshua Long, this year’s Leadership Award winner, believes in the need for blue-collar jobs and in the need for American manufacturing.

Since the current financial crisis began there has been a new fuse lit under students who want to get the best education in order to compete in the tumultuous job market. Only high tuition fees and the lessening importance of their degrees are beating them. According to a study conducted by the Associated Press, one in two graduates are unemployed or underemployed. Many graduates are finding it difficult to fit into a job market where the demand for degrees in the arts and humanities are on a steady decline.

Long, who recently won the Moraine Valley Leadership Award worth $900 will also be giving the student speech at graduation. In the essay he submitted for the contest, Long showed concern for the failing job market and the negative role corporations are playing in the American economy.

“Corporations,” he said, “need to come back to America. We need to stop outsourcing jobs needed here. In the beginning, we were making our own goods and making a profit off of it. Now we have a trade deficit and are importing far more than we export. This makes

things cheaper for the corporations but cuts back jobs here in the U.S.” Long said that the United States has began producing more information than manufactured goods, but what’s more troubling is what he calls “the underlying job market.”

“There are tons of jobs out there,” he said, “but people think they’re too good for them so they spend all of their money on degrees and then can’t find a job.”

Long believes that there is no need to spend an excessive amount of money on a bachelor’s degree if there is no clear direction.

“A bachelor’s degree is important,” he said, “because education is the single most important thing you’ll ever have in your life, but it has to be in a specific field.”

The statistics compiled by the Associated Press agree with him. In the year 2011, bachelor’s degree-holders set a new record for the past 11 years, which is a 53.6% unemployed/underemployed rate. This is mainly because more and more companies are looking for employees who have both degrees and experience. Unfortunately, if the job is needed for experience and the experience is needed for the job it’s more than likely that the unemployment rate is only going to increase.

By Nicole Bracken Editorial Assistant “Honestly, writing for the Glacier was probably one of the best decisions of my college life,” said Glacier alumnus Steve Schering. This is easy to see when it actually helped him get the career he has today.

After graduating from Richards High School in 2004, Schering began his college journey at Moraine in the fall. He studied journalism and communications until the Spring of 2006.

During that time, Schering was a staff writer and the Sports Editor for three plus semesters at the Glacier.

Schering’s favorite Glacier memory was taking second place at the national newspaper conference they attended in Los Angeles in 2006.

“I’d never been on a plane until then and I loved the weekend in LA. We were able to walk on Hollywood Boulevard the day before the Academy Awards while they were setting up all the Oscar statues and the red carpet.

Plus the WWE was at Universal City the day we left (I’m a wrestling fan) so that was cool,” said Schering.

Schering transferred to Governors

Steve Schering, a former student at Moraine Valley and an alumnus of The Glacier, advises students to build a strong resume and “network like crazy.” [Steve Schering] State University in the fall of 2006 and graduated with his BA in Communications in April 2008.

Schering continued writing there as the editor of their student newspaper, the Phoenix, for over a year. He

also did some freelance writing for the Southtown Star newspaper in the summer of 2007.

Schering said, “I had some down time, mostly because of the economy, after graduating from GSU, but anoth-

er former Glacier writer, my old editor Rob Siebert, was able to get me a job with the Doings Newspaper, where he was already working. Rob kept putting in a good word for me with the bosses there.

One day they e-mailed me asking to cover a meeting in Burr Ridge and I’ve been there ever since.” He has remained at the Doings for about three years and occasionally does some freelance writing for the Elmhurst Patch website.

Looking back to his days at Moraine, Schering says, “The campus life was great and it was a lot of fun relaxing in the old Glacier office in between and after classes with the rest of the staff and Ted our advisor.”

To current Moraine students, Schering advises, “Enjoy your college life because, before you know it, you’ll be walking across the stage and into the real world. Also, try to be active on campus and meet new people. Build up your resume now and network like crazy. It can really pay off down the line.”

Familiar Faces at Anime Central Jonathan Sims Graphic Assistant

One weekend every year, Rosemont, Illinois is transformed into the home of the Midwest’s largest anime convention: Anime Central (A.K.A. Acen).

Many anime cliché’s such as large, unnaturally colored, spiky hair and oversized weapons may sound familiar, and classic shows on TV such as Speed Racer and Pokémon are some of the most well known and popular of anime. That said, there is a massive fan base in the United States, and to celebrate the common interest of anime, these conventions occur across the nation.

Acen alone has just had its 15th convention from April 29 to the 31.

The event takes place in the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center and the neighboring Hyatt hotel. Activities range from voice actor signings, video showings, and press releases to a Masquerade, a nighttime dance party and public video game competitions.

There are video game appeals, tabletop role-play games, trading card games, and (most famously), a city full of costumed con-goers! During the entire week of the convention, many people

choose to dress up in costumes as their favorite characters, which is (in anime fandom) referred to as ‘cosplay’.

People had planned skits in costume for the competition, but due to a lack of time to save the dance and due to a lack of time, they cancelled the skits on the spot, leaving many hours of work for naught. Beyond the grim tone set by the unfortunate event, there is still much to be offered at the convention. The sales floor is one of the main attractions of the convention, where a variety of goods and services are available. Anime DVD’s, Manga books, clothes, accessories, costume components, and collectables are just the surface of the variety of goods.

The Artist’s Alley is a place on the sales floor for commissions or one-of-akind art works to bring home, and support up and coming creators. The alley is just one of many reasons why Acen, which is run by a non-profit organization known as the Midwest Anime Promotion Society, is a positive force for us to invest in.

Graduation in the know

By Anthony Rojas Social Editor If you’re looking to graduate at the end of this semester, there are some things you might need to know.

Graduation will be held on May 18 at 7:00p.m and last for about two hours in the gymnasium.

Graduates should arrive by 6:00. A cap and gown are required and are required to buy a cap and gown (found in the bookstore). At 6:15, graduates will line up in caps and gowns in the first floor hallways located in the A building.

The order of the line will be based on the degree each graduate is receiving. Students should then find a partner and stand behind them.

Small reader’s cards will then be passed out to every student. Students have to write their names twice on these slips so their names can be called to receive their diplomas.

The first spelling is the literal spelling of the student’s full name and the second is a phoenetic pronunciation of the name to be called out during the ceremony.

Students will not receive their physical diplomas until they receive them in the mail six to eight weeks after graduation.

students will receive diploma covers.

They will then go on to a recession that will be held in the Moraine Rooms located in building M.

Anyone who brings a child under the age of 6 will be moved to the Dorothy Menker Theatre.

There will also be DVDs and photos available upon order. Photos, with a cover, will cost $15.00 and DVDs will cost $10.

Moraine will be retaining the rights of all photos taken for their own promotional use and will be making photos public in a gallery on May 24 at morainevalley.printroom.com. DVDs will arrive in the mail roughly four weeks after the ceremony.

Based upon the group of students who had come to Moraine in 2008, as of 2011, 16% had graduated from Moraine, 30% had transferred without completing a degree, and 15% remained enrolled at Moraine.

The Summer Bash is back and in full swing on June 16 with an impressive lineup with a variety of artists. Chicago’s very own Lupe Fiasco will be hitting the stage. Up and coming artists The Wanted will be gracing the stage as well as YouTube’s sensation Karmin. Others artists like, Dev, Pitbull,Chris Brown, Tinie Tempah, Joe Jonas, Flo Rida and much more will be there to turn this year’s Bash into a night to remember.

“Avengers” has highest-grossing opening weekend

By Calvin Bragg Staff Writer “The Avengers” is an action packed thriller that can really captivate an audience of all ages. The Marvel movie features Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), director of the espionage agency S.H.I.E.L.D., who unites Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Rober Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) against a other worldly army led by Loki, (Tom Hiddleston) the brother of Thor.

The movie follows Loki as he tries to enslave the human race after making

a deal with an alien race known as the Chitauri. He promises the Chitauri a powerful artifact known as the Tesseract if they give him the army needed to conquer Earth. The Avengers first struggle is to unite. Divided for many reasons concerning S.H.I.E.L.D. and Loki, they later put their differences aside to become Earth’s first line of defense against Loki and his army.

One character that really stood out was Dr. Banner, both human and in his Hulk form. Ruffalo really captures the role of Bruce Banner, afraid of the damage his power can cause. However the green monster inside really lived up to his one word catch phrase “smash” by literally doing just that.

His incredible strength is displayed as he runs through anything in his path.

“The Avengers” really is a roller coaster ride from start to finish, but is also rife with humor. It’s easily the funniest Marvel movie yet, filled with many clever one-liners. The audience was laughing on numerous occasions.

The film had great action and humor, while telling a worthwhile storyline.

“The Avengers” is a great movie, maybe even a contender for best film of the year. The idea of heroes lined in spandex has become the norm these days.

With “The Avengers,” Joss Wheadon has shown the world there’s still so much possible within the genre. These

aren’t just your stock superheroes saving the world. They are heroes who must overcome their extreme differences for something bigger than every single one of them.

If you are a Marvel or comic book fan than you’ve probably already seen this movie.

Even if you aren’t, you absolutely should anyways. “The Avengers” is a roller coaster from beginning to end filled with the brim with not only intense action, but clever humor, and a deep plot that no one should not experience.

Efron “Lucky” in new love story

“The Raven” brings Poe to life

By Nicole Bracken Editorial Assistant The master of horror himself, Edgar Allen Poe, played by John Cusack, finds himself entangled in a battle of wits with a serial killer that mimics his stories in The Raven.

Hearing intense screams of terror, the police knock down the door of a home to find a woman in a puddle of blood, a girl’s body stuffed up the chimney, and the room’s only window has been nailed shut. Thus, “The Murder in the Rue Morgue” is the first of many of Poe’s stories to become brutal reality.

When the killer snatches his lover Emily, Poe is forced to search the depths of his mind to figure out the killer’s next step and find Emily before it’s too late. Each murder leaves behind more clues.

As a Poe fan, I couldn’t help wanting to see some of his stories on screen. Although I could predict what was coming at times, I still found myself on the edge of my seat or in some cases, like in the gruesome “The Pit and the Pendulum” scene, I was looking away. The camera angle and lighting seemed effective, especially when it deliberately shines a light on the eye of the killer to reference to “a pale blue eye” in “The Tell-Tale Heart.”

The movie has the mystery and suspense I expected a Poe-based film to have. The movie even uses details of the real Poe’s life, playing on Poe’s unexplained death by setting it in those last days. They referenced his drinking habits, military experience, unstable relationships with bosses, and loss of women he loved.

While Cusack plays a believable Poe, giving a taste of insanity mixed with a literary genius, I felt Alice Eve (Emily) was an awful, one-dimensional actress.

How can someone trapped in a coffin speak to their murderous captor in a casual tone much like one would when whispering to a friend in class? Aside from one scream, she showed no signs of fear or distress.

While most Poe references were strategically placed, one seemed awkward.

Emily is flattered when Poe recites lines from “Annabel Lee” to her, but it is most commonly believed that poem was written about his dead wife Virginia.

Overall, it was a good movie that gives insight to the world of Poe, as well as keeps the audience on their toes. It has a few weak points, but is still worth the watch to see the creator become part of his creations.

What they say must be true that, “All is fair in love and war.”

The romantic love story “The Lucky One” stars Zac Efron as the leading role and Taylor Schilling as his love interest.

Efron plays U.S. Marine Logan Thibault, who believes that a photo of a woman he found while on his third tour in Iraq is the reason is he still alive. Schilling plays Beth, a single mother who lives in a small town with her son and mother.

The photo brings Logan good luck and a new purpose for his life after war.

When Logan returns home he sets out to look for this mysterious woman who saved his life. When Efron’s character finally meets Beth she assumes he is there to work at her family’s dog

kennel unable to tell her who he really is takes the job at the kennel to be close to her. Inevitably the two starts falling for each other but Beth’s ex-husband, town sheriff, doesn’t take a liking to Logan. When the truth starts to come out their love is tested.

Most of the movie teaches us that if you love someone enough destiny will take care of the rest. Director Scott Hicks really captures struggle, love, beauty and heartache. Hicks brought this Nicholas Sparks novel to life and captivated the true meaning of how to love. Efron’s character teaches us not to be afraid to follow our hearts and to find out what we are truly destined to be.

Theatre Department presents their version of Sarte’s “No Exit”

Moraine Valley’s Theater Department presented the famous French playwright and philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre’s classic play, “No Exit” at Oremus Theater from April 27 to May 6.

The play was first performed in May 1944 just before the liberation of Paris from German occupation. It was deliberately written as a one-act play so that theatergoers would not violate the imposed curfew.

Masked as a fictional work, “No Exit” received clearance to be performed despite German censorship but metaphorically condemns Nazi presence in France as a hellish environment and reflects Sartre’s philosophy of existentialism’s subjectivity and freedom of individuals. “Every action implies both an environment and human subjectivity,” Sartre wrote in his 1946 lecture “Existentialism is a Humanism.”

“No Exit” was formerly per-

formed under titles “No Way Out” and “Dead End” as an intense psychoanalysis of the disturbing vices of three conflicting individuals, Cradeau, Inez, and Estelle, who are being punished for their evil actions, which they do not admit to. A mysterious bellboy traps them in a locked drawing room with no mirrors; they are the mirrors - each is seen, taunted and judged by the other two but not by oneself. There is no food, no privacy, no rest despite the three couches, and no light switches. There is a statue to glance at in the midst of the trio’s constant confrontations as they try to seduce and torture one another. The door swings open once, but nobody dares escape the hell they created for themselves and for each other.

The word hell is often repeated in the play and the most quoted line: “Hell is other people” epitomizes beyond Paris’ grim reality during World War II; it focuses on subjective competiveness: peo-

ple treating others as objects rather than subjects. Sartre brings us a powerful message - that the emotional tortures we create for ourselves and others are far worse than the hellish reality. Sartre’s characters are dead to each other and bonded to “live” for eternity in hell. The social commentary of the play is used in many world literature, psychology and philosophy classes.

Dr. Graig Rosen, head of MV’s Theater Department, has directed many academic shows during his tenure including “Tartuffe”, “How I Learned to Drive”, “The Glass Menagerie”, and “The Adding Machine.

Rosen will direct the traditional Shakespeare Summer Theater, and the auditions for “Midsummer Night Dream” are Monday, May 14, 6,30 p.m.

The outdoor Gateway Theater performance dates are July 2628.
