Editor’s Note In recent years, I have had the tremendous privilege of travelling extensively. I really love the cultural experiences that come with travelling, but most of all I cherish the amazing people that I meet along the way. One question I am often asked by travelers to the Maldives is, what else can I do on my holiday besides their set pre-booked activity. Well, as a Maldivian, I thought I would share a few ideas for your Maldives holiday based on my experience. In this issue, we go through twenty-three things you can do during your trip. I am
sure there would be so many things that you would want to experience over and over. Moving forward, in this issue we dive deep into the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme which recently got featured in Apple’s #ShotoniPhone campaign. And let’s not forget our friends over at Soneva and their ‘Intelligent Luxury’ tailored experience. Welcome As you fly over the breathtaking Maldives Islands, let me also welcome you to the 09th issue of FIYA, our in-flight magazine. This is our first issue of the year 2019, hence I would like to wish you all a very adventurous and a successful year ahead. With the anticipated growth in the tourism sector in the year 2019, we will see an increment in the number of tourist arrivals and in the number of resorts and guesthouses. To cater for this growing industry Flyme will be bringing additional aircraft to its fleet. A brand new ATR 72-600 will be available for service in the month of
October 2019 and Flyme will be introducing seaplanes, 4 Twin Otter aircraft by August 2019 with completion of seaplane terminal in Velana International Airport. Along with the planned fleet expansion, we will also be expanding our routes to different parts of the country, further enhancing the services we provide to our valuable passengers. Whale Sharks OF SOUTH ARI - WHAT ARE THEY DOING THERE?

Seeing a whale shark, the largest fish in the world, glide over a tropical Maldivian coral reef is a life event that only a fortunate few will ever get to experience. The South Ari atoll region is renowned as being a ‘hot spot’ for this species and one of the few places in the world where you have the chance to see these animals on any day of the year. If you are one of those lucky folk, then the chances are that after the initial excitement of actually being in the water with such a huge animal starts to subside, your wide eye’s will begin to notice details about it and what it is doing.

The Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme (MWSRP) has been recording whale shark encounters in the South Ari atoll region for over 10 years. Part of the data the MWSRP records is the behavior of the shark. The MWSRP assign each shark to one of five behavioral categories; ‘Cruising’, ‘Evasive’, ‘Inquisitive’ ‘Interacting’ and ‘Feeding’. By recording these details, we are able to compare other factors – either environmental or human influenced – to see what affect they have on a shark. Let’s have a look at each in a bit more detail.

EVASIVE
INQUISITIVE
The second most frequently recorded behavior is ‘Evasive’. This is usually characterized by very short-lived encounters with whale sharks that really don’t want to have any company! Typically sharks exhibiting this kind of behavior are seen at the surface and then begin to dive as soon as a vessel or person approaches them. The shark typically hugs the bottom of the reef and swims – often rapidly – out away from shallow water, following the seabed contours down into the deep. This kind of behavior can also be prompted by people getting too close to a seemingly unresponsive ‘Cruising’ shark and making it uncomfortable. MWSRP believes that these sharks are further along in their re-warming process than ‘Cruising’ sharks.
A firm favorite behavior of both scientists and visitors to the Maldives alike, unfortunately it’s not as commonly observed as we would hope! Believed to be a behavior only exhibited by whale sharks at the peak of their re-warming cycle, sharks which are ‘Inquisitive’ are typically seen right in front of your nose! Often staying at the surface for prolonged periods, these sharks closely approach snorkelers or vessels, sometimes even bumping or rubbing up against them. Quite unnerving for people having their first whale shark encounter, it is you who has to move out of the shark’s way! Vessel Captains have to be very careful when operating around a shark exhibiting this behavior as they will frequently venture near vessel propellers and are liable to injury.

CRUISING The vast majority of encounters with whale sharks in the South Ari atoll Marine Protected Area are with whale sharks which are ‘Cruising’. Broadly speaking, this behavioral type is defined as “a slow moving shark close to the surface exhibiting no rapid movements, feeding or response to peripheral stimuli”. MWSRP believe that sharks behaving like this are doing so as they are recuperating from feeding dives into deep, cold water nearby. As cold blooded animals they must re-warm their bodies in the warm surface waters before they can increase their activity levels and are therefore at their most vulnerable to predators or collisions with vessels in this state.
One of the best things you can do to mitigate your impact on the shark is to follow the rules on how to act around the shark that your guide will give you. Following these will not only help to prevent stressing the sharks, it will make for a much better experience for you too as the shark is likely to hang around longer!
INTERACTING Another favorite for both the MWSRP researchers and anyone lucky enough to witness it, interacting is where two – or in some magical cases even more – whale sharks meet and interact with each other on the reef. This is very rarely seen, but typically when the sharks first meet they will circle around one another, like enormous puppies! Quite why they do this is a mystery, though theories range from them ‘sizing each other up’, to releasing and smelling some kind of pheromone into the water which passes information about one shark to the other. People who have seen this behavior often ask if it is related to mating, though with 96% of the sharks being male in this area, and all juvenile, this is unlikely unless it is practice for behavior that will be needed later in life. This can either be done via your tour provider if they are registered with the Big Fish Network platform, or directly via the free iOS mobile app ‘Whale Shark Network Maldives’.

THIS TYPE OF FEEDING IS KNOWN AS ‘RAM FILTER FEEDING’
FEEDING Feeding whale sharks account for only around 16% of encounter records for whale sharks in the South Ari atoll Marine Protected Area. In other regions of the Maldives when the sharks are drawn to events offering them a chance to opportunistically feed, it is the primary behavior type. Attaining food is one of the major challenges in a whale shark’s life, so they very rarely miss a chance to do so. There are two types of feeding performed by whale sharks, both revolving around the mechanism of ‘filter feeding’. Filter feeding is where small fish and plankton enter the mouth of the sharks along with gallons and gallons of water. The water is then
expelled through the gills and fine filters in the gills extract the tiny animals which are then swallowed by the shark’s en-masse. In ‘suction filter feeding’, the sharks actively suck water and the hapless plankton into their mouth and then force out the water over their gills by powerfully closing their jaws. This is usually reserved for good feeding opportunities. The alternative is ‘ram filter feeding’, where the shark swims along with its mouth wide open. Anything in the path of the shark which cannot actively swim away gets scooped up. Maximum size of an animal a whale shark can eat? About 5 inches. So don’t worry, you’re not on the menu despite their size!
If you are lucky enough to have the chance to swim with the whale sharks in South Ari atoll, do remember that these sharks are probably feeling tired and pretty vulnerable being at the surface with you! SNORKELING
Snorkeling underwater is always an exhilarating experience, but there are certain locations where it’s even better. Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll, which is UNESCO protected, is one such spot. This area is the world’s largest feeding station, one of the few places in the world where whale sharks come to mate from May to December. This is also the place to be if you want to spot the much loved Manta Rays.

What was your Maldives experience like? Was it your first time? First time. I met wonderful people and had a great time, particularly as I was on an exciting mission joining the research team. How much of an advantage would it be to the destination Maldives, to be featured on the Apple’s #ShotoniPhone campaign? I guess Apple’s reach is great for anyone being featured, particularly for the Maldives as a potential travel destination for tourists. I am sure people will be interested finding out more about whale sharks and marine wildlife in the Maldives thanks to Apple.
How was Maldives chosen as a destination for this Apple commissioned video? Apple chose to portrait the MWSRP due to their work in iOS app development Maldives is as we know an amazing destination to create contents? Any specific projects or ideas which you would love to contribute for video production?
Not necessarily above, but rather under water it is where a plethora of wild life welcomes their visitors. The island culture, traditions and history of the Maldive people would be an interesting subject to explore some time as well as the local surf scene, being a surfer myself. Still bummed I didn’t have time to check out the northern atolls, that have a rich surf scene I hear
The South Ari atoll of the Maldives, which i had the pleasure of traveling to, was definitely one of the most unique destinations I ever experienced. Being so remote from the next city, most of the life here happens around the reefs.

Some of the more famous locations are found in the southern atolls, such as Maareha Kan’du and Villingili Kan’du. With over 1190 islands, Maldives has endless surf breaks with some of them being the best the planet has to offer. Interview From working as a dental nurse, she found her true calling as a cabin crew. Currently the Deputy Chief Cabin Crew at Flyme, Nasha is so profoundly passionate about her job, she has maintained a 100% attendance record. She is a confident woman who handles the everyday challenges of the job gracefully, and looks forward to bigger opportunities and challenges in her field.
What got you interested in the field, and how was your initial experience in the industry? I love traveling and that is what actually brought me to this industry. I love cultures, inquiring and learning about various cultures, talking to people. So, when a cabin crew training course was announced, I jumped in to the opportunity did the course work here in Male’ and a month’s practical training in Sri Lanka. Getting the job was fairly easy as I got selected both for Flyme’s and Maldivian’s Crew. But the initial days of working as a cabin crew were challenging. Dealing with passengers of different moods, nature and very unruly passengers was tough. There were times I even cried, but over the years I have gained confidence and know what to expect.

How long have you been in this industry and how did you come to join Flyme? Earlier I was working as a dental nurse, I actually worked in the field for 4 years before doing the cabin crew training. When the announcement was made, I applied because it felt right. When I finished my training, I applied to both Flyme and Maldivian, but I got the offer from Flyme first and I immediately accepted it. Subsequently, in fact next week, I got the offer letter from Maldivian as well, but chose to continue with Flyme. I have been here for the past 6 years starting from junior level to this position.

How would you describe your everyday experience as a cabin crew and how has the company supported you to grow within your career? Flyme has a very supportive management. If you are hardworking, you can be assured that they would do everything they can to retain that staff. Over the years that I have worked here, they have not just provided me training opportunities such as cabin safety inspection course, certified cabin crew facilitator course, but have mentored me and also supported through challenging times during early days of the career. They have always been very appreciative of me and that keeps me motivated. I am currently the only in-house trainer in the company, and its Flyme that gave me this opportunity. What are the challenges in the industry for women, especially doing such a demanding job that requires you to be constantly traveling? We have to sort of be on standby even if it is not our duty. Sometimes if a scheduled crew member calls in sick, one of the other crews will fill in. I have never in my career called in sick, and always filled in when being asked. And filling in for another crew means that one’s own schedule is also disrupted. That is one challenge even though I enjoy what I do. Other than that, I have never faced any difficulty while working in Flyme.
What advice would you give to young girls who wish to build a long-term career in this company, especially as a cabin crew?
If you were to describe Maldives to an outsider, and recommend things to do in Maldives, what would that be?
I have started my career as a junior cabin crew and now am the deputy chief cabin crew in Flyme. I would just say that if you are truly passionate about a career in this industry, especially as a cabin crew, work hard to prove your worth and the rest will follow suit. You will get the support and encouragement from Flyme’s management constantly and consistently.
During layovers Flyme’s crew members are often accommodated in Villa Group’s hotels and resorts. Our most frequent flying destination is Maamigili and we always stay in the nearby Holiday Island Resort. So, when you ask that, what floats on my mind is a trip to Holiday Island Resort and Island Hopping in Maamigli.
What is the most unforgettable experience of your career? One of the experiences with a very unruly passenger is particularly memorable. The passenger was on transit and he wanted a smoke break. But the policy is that transit passengers do not get out of the plane during the 20 minutes that passengers disembark and board the plane. And moreover, smoking area is outside the terminal. I had to physically restrict him from getting out of the plane and also inform the captain. The passenger used abusive language too.
Maamigili is a developing island. So, there you get to see both the rural lifestyle alongside the industrial developments that are taking place and I find that fascinating.
There are many such incidents and I have learned to handle them.

DOLPHIN SPOTTING

Truly unique as the only one island atoll in the Maldives, Fuvahmulah has many other distinctive and interesting features as well. A LONG BRIDGE RIDE
The Sinamale’ bridge is the country’s first and only cross-sea bridge, which opened at the end of just last year. It connects the capital city of Male’ to Hulhule’ and Hulhumale’. Go for a ride on the bridge and take in the spectacular scenery of the vast blue ocean on either side. If the timing is right, you might even spot an aeroplane flying just overhead as it descends to land at the airport in Hulhule’! It’s quite a sight – and sound, and will certainly leave you in awe.
