What Do You Love
About Working Here? “I love students’
“You know, I
depths of curiosity
love the diversity of the students. The people, the staff I work with, are awesome.” Ellen Hamilton, English Teacher
and they’re still very enthusiastic about knowing many things and Japanese is one of them. I just enjoy being with young minds.” Kimihiko Nomura, Japanese Teacher
“What I love about teaching is the fact that I
know and understand the role
that the students have as far as the homework load and everything they have to go through. Being an alumni myself and an RA, I know what they have to deal with when it comes to studying. When it comes to the teaching process, I understand what they have to deal with. It’s easier for me to be able to understand and give them less amount of work as far as how much work they have to do. But, it still gives in the concept as far as teaching goes,” Jonathan Mireless, Algebra ll Teacher
“I love Upward Bound because I love
being able to help students learn. I like that the students here really enjoy being here, they have fun being here. Overall, they’re excited to learn and that makes me happy.” Mona Guzman, Geometry & Statistics Teacher
“I like the Upward Bound Program because the students wants to be here. I’ve done summer school at my school before and I like it, too. I like to teach. So, I’ll teach any of it. But, here I get to pick what I get to teach and I just
really like the students
and getting to know students from other schools.” Rebecca Tilson, Anatomy & Biology Teacher
“I love working with the students. They’re so much fun and makes me think of first generation college students and that’s who I was. This program helps students that works hard and wants to succeed in life. They’re not just ‘I want to’ but they’re here. They’re taking six weeks out of their summer to
strengthen their skills
in all types of subjects.” Mauricio Jaime, Beg. & Adv. Spanish Teacher

Building a community is bridging our sense of loneliness and disconnection with a sense of home and community. A
community
is a prime example that love is possible in a materialistic, selfish, greed-driven society where
people often ignore or fight each other. It’s a sign that people are capable of love and kindness. -Raquel Cuyzon, Female Head RA

Student government WHY?
What made me want to run for president was the impact that the previous president from two summers ago had on me. Gilberto Guerrero really changed my life.
I went from a really shy kid to being very outgoing,
Diego Tena, senior
which made me want to run for president.
GOALS?
My main goal as president is to have a fun and a safe environment for everyone in the UB program, and also to include everyone in every activity. “I feel like I have a lot of responsibility because I am the president. I feel like I need to oversee everything so that
it all flows right.”
Arashdeep Sahota, senior I wanted to run for vice president because I knew how to help everyone to have a more fun summer. When I was running I knew that having the experience with two summers before, many things could be changed and many can be continued so alternately my goal is for everyone to have an awesome summer. At school I’m a part of Key club, Interact club, and CSF. I love to watch anime and listen to music. I also like to drive around for fun even though it gets expensive because of gas.

What kind of injuries have you received before?
she said Diana Torres, senior “My injury happened three weeks ago, during an AU tournament in a basketball game, one of the world’s largest tournaments. It sucked because I already had a torn ACL before, but I never got a surgery since I couldn’t afford it. In the middle of the game, I was going to shoot a basket and this girl came from the side and tackled me. It made my leg bend outward and I tore my ACL completely to the point where I couldn’t even do exercise anymore until I get the surgery. I’m trying to figure out when to get the surgery. I wanted to come to Upward Bound so I had to get it popped by the chiropractor so I can at least walk around campus so I wouldn’t be limping.”
he said Jonathan Murillo, senior “Last year during soccer season, I got kneed in the spine. My spine was bruised and deformed six of my back muscles, which didn’t allow me to play soccer for nearly six to twelve months. This happened during a soccer game, I was the goalie. The ball was coming towards me. I caught the ball, which caused me to fall onto the ground. And then a kid fell on top of me, damaging my spine.” 1. 43 Dorm Life
all that noise~ Every summer, Shasta and Lassen halls become a place to call home for over 200 students over the course of six weeks; no wonder we become a family after all. During this time, each participant gains independence and responsibility. We figure out how to adjust to the college lifestyle while creating endless memories with new friends. Bunking with a complete stranger is the worst thought of all, but roommates become a part of the experience. The little things, such as playing pool, volleyball, pingpong, or hanging out with your friends make dorm life the highlight of the day. Although we may get homesick once in a while, the people surrounding us make it all worthwhile. The bond that is created throughout our summer days here at Upward Bound is something impossible to forget. Written by Melina Espinoza

Cleaning up bidwell park together Sweat. A lot of sweat. That’s what it takes for the people at Bidwell Park to take care of it. So, as us UBers have been doing for years, we went to help them for a few hours. We all worked hard to clean up the community park that we all love, as much as we possibly could in the few hours we were there. Since most of us visit this park quite a bit, it was nice to help out and keep the park we share clean for others to enjoy. ”So much happens in the community that it’s important to give back,” said junior Salma Mundo. After we were done helping out, we went to have some fun! Barbecue was first, then came the pool! It didn’t take very long for people to start diving in while others began relaxing underneath the trees. A clean park is an awesome park to hang out in. It’s meant to be clean for the community and the people in it, and that’s what makes the cleanup worth it. Written by Mallory Walker
