n this number of My Second Night we are pleased to introduce you Bridget75, a woman that has create a zyngo sim by herself.
How did you know Second Life? I read an article on a magazine about virtual worlds, in particular Second Life. Out of curiosity, I joined in the virtual world and, since that first moment, I never left it. I like Second Life and I still to log in. Who has introduced you to the gamble in Second Life? A friend of mine, Luisella Frog, illustrated me the possibilty of having fun and earning at the same time with zyngo machines. What would you suggest someone who wants to become owner of a zyngo sim? First of all : be patient and constant. It’s necessary to invest a large amount of Linden to buy zyngo machines, but, above all, it’s necessary to be patient and create a nice place and to draw the attention of players. Do you like the zyngo arcade or is is only a way to earn lindens? I like zyngo very much and I try to earn some lindens too.

he spring, as we all know, awakens good mood, the colors and lights makes everything brighter, more vibrant and more alive. It seems that everything around us magically resume to life as if it had awakened from a long and enchanted sleep, so why not bring some of this magic in the virtual world of Second Life? Explosions of colors and flowers, leaping animals and overtime as realistic landscapes are slowly catching on in this second world so that we can introduce ourself in the summer. Just think about the Paradiso’s region
where you can find flowers everywhere, pure and sparkling water and the tranquility of a song sung by the singing of birds, or why not look for an opportunity to give free rein to the mind to create the perfect spot for a day outdoors, even under a cherry tree? The ways to create the perfect location and the ways to share your spring exist and definitely will give to those who visit the thrill of being able to feel the coming of the light and colors that warm the soul. Nothing remains but to witness this explosion of colors!
Breedables! Writer:Odelia Emmons photographers: Carmy Sonata & Edwardi Mosely
I
doubt anyone out there would argue with me when I say that the Sion chicken was the first breedable in SL.
The market has grown from there to more than 26 breedable companies operating in SL today. We’ve seen everything from breedable shoes and cars, to the more mundane horses and dogs. I would like to focus your attention on several outstanding breedables. I’ve chosen to highlight these few because I think each is unique in its own way. I did a search on Sion Chickens and was surprised to see that they still exist in SL. I got in touch with Greenshamrock McMahon, the go-to person for all things Sion Chicken. She filled me in on a bit of Second Life history, and also what’s new and up-and-coming in the world of chickens. She told me that the first Sion Chicken was created in 2004 or 2005; it was originally used as a target to test weapons. It was not breedable nor was it intelligent. The breedable pet chicken is now 5 years old. And the best news is...there’s something new coming our way from Sion Zaius, the creator of Sion Chickens. We don’t know what it is yet...but we
wait with bated breath this new development! Our expectations are being built up by the weekly release of News Broadcasts...intriguing us with reports of the latest developments, and contests and events to come. Sion focuses on building community ...and the weekly reports are a great way to do it. From the oldest we move on to the newest... Evo Mystic Fairies... lovely flitting creatures with mesh bodies, and a world and kingdoms of their own. The Fae are all females...no guys necessary, they summon eggs.....very intriguing!!! Faes also interact as community...some can summon food, some do little decorations for their Fae colony , some are soldiers, and other new actions will be added as new Faes come out. Breeders of the Faes are called Guardians, and it’s a fascinating job indeed! Evo have other breedables available as well; hamsters, plants, and a very active breedable marine life group...clams, urchins, starfish, and fish. I recommend a visit to their Shoals main store...located underwater on a reef. Next stop is ABC horses...the most believable horses in SLl. These horses re-
quire care just like a horse in RL...they must be fed, exercised, trained. and require meds from time to time. They also produce live births. In SL for two years, they generate a lot of interest. They are very realistic looking and beautiful animals. . Horse racing is held at two tracks, and actual betting on the races takes place. We move on in our breedable tour to the Dwarfins...a humanoid breedable that defies classification. They are fascinating creatures and have come a long way since their creation. They now build villages, and can fish, mine, garden and craft. The goal of the Dwarfins game is to create a community. There are fishermen, butchers, guards, kings, queens and a lot more. Food can be grown for the dwarfins to eat, either through gardening or fishing. Dwarfins can be given food right from the garden or it can be sent to an online pantry and used for recipes to feed the Dwarfin clan. A variety of interactive items for the Dwarfins can be purchased, including
buildings that they will build themselves. There also are a large number of interactive items that the Dwarfins can mine up, including blueprints that can be used to make things for them, including the buildings. Dwarfins have grown steadily since launch, both in
player numbers and the game play itself, and the creators are far from finished growing. Look for future developments and more fun! Last stop on our tour is WK Cats...Wild Kajaera. No games or kingdoms here...just wonderful in-
teractions and behaviors...beautiful animals. There is an interesting variety of species, such as cougars, jaguars, lions, and tigers, all with an interesting variety of traits. The cats can climb trees and swim in SL water. There are toys and convenient web-based up-
dating and information. Simple and rewarding both for breeders and those who just keep a few as pets. WK customer service is the best and most attentive. Everyone in the company is tuned in to their customers’ needs.
I hope i have stimulated your interest in breedables...there are many more to explore out there, and each has its community with opportunities to find new friends while pursuing an absorbing activity in Second Life.
Italian language learning resources in Second Life
writer: Carmy Sonata
V
irtual worlds are playing an increasingly important role in education, especially in language learning. By March 2007 it was estimated that over 200 universities or academic institutions were involved in Second Life. Second Life is now being used by language teachers to provide simulation of real life environments and allow students to discover more creative and more realistic ways to improve their language skills. Also Victoria University of Wellington has created within Second Life some languange courses resources for students. Last mounth our editorial group participated in a project with some Italian Language practice exercises for their students.
Our group collaborated to create a meeting in which students could interview our staff, a builder, Colpo Wexler, the owner of an Italian sim, Lost Town, Sivi Kelberry. Students could improve their language skills in two different moments. They asked some questions in Italian to all people about their works in Second Life. Four Italian teachers of Victoria University accompanied and helped the students in this experience. We are really proud of having collaborated with th Univerisity of Wellington for this Italian experience for their students. Our Editorial group belives that Second Life offers new approaches to language learning and our feedback from this experience is very positive.

t’s a very beautiful place, a landscaped coastal region with paths and walks, with New Zealand flora. When you arrive you find a wooden walkway which bring to the coast of a bay. There are some remarkable examples of New Zealand flora to be seen here; everything from plants through to trees. The beauty of nature and digital art are brought together by artists hands. The Artist’s Garden is a whole sim of lovingly landscaped gardens to explore, with a huge selec-
tion of unique botanicals. From mighty oaks to gnarled pines, wild grasses to granny bonnets, there’s something to help make every garden a work of art.

n this number we would like to present you a very impressive installation at FRANTASTICA. We visited the sim as suggested by some blogs and by the official Linden site. But, before presenting you the installation, let us illustrated what FRANTASTICA is. Probably a lot of us are familiar with the story of Fran Swenson, now 86, a Parkinson’s suf-
ferer who has seen something of an overall improvement in her condition which she attributes to Second Life. Some of the benefits offered by the platform regard movements. Second Life permits to people with deseases to do a lot of things: such as dancing, running, jumping and having fun.
Some professors of U.S. Universities took interest in Fran’s situation, and her daughter joined SL and started to explore the world. Observing her mother’s response to the platform she had the greatest inspiration: to go ahead and build Creations Park, a place where her mother and other Parkinson’s sufferers can spend time, find support and enjoy one another’s company. She and her family have also formed a support group raising funds for Team Fox, the fundraising division of the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. People with Parkinson’s disease often experience a phenomenon known as “compulsive creativity.” Park Art at Frantastiica is an ever-changing experience of compulsively creative art via the mind of DB Bailey (David Denton), who lives with Parkinson’s, where the only limits are those of your imagination. DB Bailey’s spaces are exceptionally immersive and wildly complex, with great overlapping textures and patterns that give a tremendous sense of depth, often highly saturated with color. The textures sometimes suggest wireframe. The impact of these color-intensified scenes is other-worldly, or maybe a hypersensual and almost hallucinogenic version of this reality. ParkArt is part of a vibrant PD community in SL. This sim is sponsored by the University of Oregon as part of ongoing research with Tredi Felisimo (Donna Z. Davis, PhD at University of Oregon) and Tom Bukowski (Tom Boellstorff, PhD at University of California - Irvine).
