VIRTUAL SECOND NIGHT

S

ince its foundation, in 2003, Second Life attracted about 1 million regular users, and more are joining every day. For individuals, a major appeal of Second Life is that it’s like real life, only much much better. And in a world where your avatar can look like a model and make virtual friends, where you can start a new career, own a big house with a pool, the greater attraction is falling in love. But, while the house and haute-couture dresses remain in Second Life, the real people behind the avatars carry their intimate emotions back into their first life. Second life offers the freedom to explore the most hidden parts of our psyches, for this reason residents regularly cultivate online romantic and sexual relationships. Cybersex is quite common in Second Life, as a study of University of Cambridge underlines, over 90% of residents praticates virtual sexual relations. In fact, from the study, it's clear that users consider the online sexual activities more “accessible, affordable, and anonymous” than sexual activities in real life. The thing can make us smile, perhaps, but remember that it is still important to put some distance between the avatars and real people, especially with regard to the delicate matter of human relationships.

ubtly infusing garments with a hippie spirit, it's an evolution we can all embrace come the warmer weather. We are, of course, thinking about the bohemian sentiment, reimagined yet again for spring and summer, this time set on carrying forth an ultra-romantic aura. Everything in between the colour palettes, the feminine appliques, the kaleidoscopic prints, and flowy, maxi silhouettes, got a luxuriously feminine make-over for spring 2015. So do expect an avalanche of flowy, dreamy, irresistible silhouettes to gift your wardrobe with a sense of ease, freedom and adventure. There’s the subtle play on transparency, the rich, vibrant prints and the sweet pastel hues to paint the bohemian trend impossibly romantic, a perfect fit for the modern-day woman in Second Life who’s eager to put her femininity on display. Hippies were about freedom — of expression, of living and, of course, of love. When it came to style, this meant individuality and customization over mass production: long hair for men, little makeup for women, bras optional. There are many designers in Second Life who have embraced this fashion trend , so that we women can recapture the spirit of " peace and love " of the 70s.

Running with scissors towards a new world (part 2)

Virtual Seond night - Issue 37 - April 2015

A new peek to Linden Lab's doing, resolving, perhaps, in a stop for actual users.

I

n last issue we analyzed what brought Linden Lab to come up with its new project, what were the implications and we gave a starting look of what this new world (called Second Life 2.0 for months) could bring to the actual users of Second life. When doubts about Linden Lab's new project grew larger and larger here comes the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education. In this fresh new edition everyone's mind is focused on Ebbe Altberg and his new project after a year of work and silence. Now, with an avatar in a formal suit instead of a jeans and a tshirt, he talks again. First of all we have something sure: this new project doesn't have yet an official name, internally it's called “Next Generation Platform”, but what's sure is that in Linden Lab they “do not refer to it as “SL 2.0″, because that might imply a little too much linearity”, and that they “don’t want to necessarily constrain themselves by the past”. Reassuring, nothing more. But considering Second Life already the past instead of something to keep updated, well it has the opposite effect in my opinion. There's another thing pointed out. Second Life's monthly users, by now, are around 900000 and Altberg, pointing to a range of users like Facebook or Twitter, pointed the fingers to problems of missing portability. “When you turn off the

PC you turn off Second life”, that's what seems to be the major problem, and that will be solved with the next generation platform. Hopefully, because by now the attempts haven't been successful, even My Second Life has major problems. I need to remind of the OnLive SL Go experiment, that will end by the end of this month, with the shutdown of OnLive. With the Next Generation Platform, however, creating events will be a trivial matter, differently from now. Another sure matter is that, when we thought he have the remote possibility of transferring our inventory from Second Life to the new platform he have the certainty: we won't be able to transfer items. We can, although, upload our items held locally, this option is limited to whom is actually able to create 3D items, for the rest the answer is “buy everything again”. Now that I mention it, the transferal of our inventory is possible only with a payable product. This is about the official solution, the alternative way is using third party products that, even if they're free, on the other side won't guarantee a good result. Altberg, also, has stated that new avatar's skeleton will be more complex, thus making all the rigged and fitted mesh clothes created by far partially or totally not compatible with the new avatars. Fortunately now the project is in closed alpha and Linden Lab is looking for

65

66 | Virtual Second night - Issue 37 - April 2015

testers that, however, are skilled users of Maya. Why Maya, an expensive 3D modeling program, and not something more accessible like Blender? No obvious reason, even if in one year there will be compatibility with Blender. If this option is already predicted why not start it immediately? Maybe to avoid complications and leave nothing to the case? If this is the reason it's comprehensible, at this point, the choice to make this project closed-source, even if there's an opening for third party projects to be implemented in the Next Generation Platform. What criteria will be applied is still unknown. Down to business and money, one of the most important points. Altberg explained that the actual economy model applied in Second Life is particular in some ways, paying a lot for lands and almost no taxes for in-world transactions, the new model will be oriented to more taxes and cheaper lands, more similar to the real world economy, in short. Is this aimed to cover more the fact that everyone has to upload again all of his inventory? Returning back to Second Life and its users Altberg stated that they have not to worry, more researches will be aimed to that world to improve its experience, but, as stated in last issue, priority is for the new project, so as back we have no confirmation neither a denial about the quality of the research. Just a big question mark. At this point the major worry is one: after the economic stagnation of Second Life in 2010 do we have to expect a technological stagnation? Maybe it's not a signal of the end of Second Life, but at this point we can't expect a second exploit of Second Life's experience.

At this point there's just one word to describe how, in my opinion, the new platform in the point of view of an average Second Life user: a blockade. Most that was expected from Linden Lab, like a new world where Second Life's users could transfer their avatars, instead, little by little, more obstacles have been created, until the recent news, putting a final and ultimate stop. There is no need to call this project Second Life 2.0 anymore. It's more like Altberg wants to create a brand new metaverse, not on the ashes of the old worlds, but by creating a brand new one, suitable for 13+, maybe just to meet the criteria used by Facebook or Twitter.

Virtual Seond night - Issue 37 - April 2015

And about Second Life? Nothing is stated but reassuring words, but since a new evolution of this platform, after 11 years, seems to be harder and harder to reach, what seems to lack is the interest of Linden Lab of evolving it, just to keep it alive, much to the hopes of its users.

Pigeon Island The desolated city of Meaningless City Writer and photographer : Zily Resident

Virtual Seond night - Issue 37 - April 2015

T

his time we are travelling to the beautiful Pigeon Island, this sim has been designed by Amelie Knelstrom who wanted to share a peaceful place for us. The sim it's changed during the passing of the seasons, at the beginning there was a forest with many areas where you can relax and when you followed the path you soon find yourself on a rocky beach, surrounded by oceans and mountains. In the middle a big rock, on which on top, after a nice long hike, you can looked over the whole sim with binoculars. This is not the end, in fact somewhere in the beach there was a ruin with a secret teleport to 'Meaningless City' a desolated city in the sky, very much worth a visit as well, but now the sim is very different.

81

82 | Virtual Second night - Issue 37 - April 2015

Virtual Seond night - Issue 37 - April 2015

P

igeon Island was adapted to the passing of the seasons, after a remodeling in autumn the forest was tinged with the usual autumn colors and the ruins with the secret teleport changed in an elegant building decorated with beautiful statues, while the ruined city remained almost identical. In winter it is changed again, the city is obviously dyed white and is a perfect combination with the desolate style, the falling snow in some places makes impossible to see the road well and some details in the city are out of that desolate world, but made it more magical perhaps. Winter is over and the sim reopened the doors again, this forest in the past is no longer there and is replaced by the desolate city that has grown and once you arrived on the island first island you are welcomed in an abandoned train station. A clearly and visible sign notifying the destination, Pigeon Island. The style of the city remained unchanged, always desolate and uninhabited, but with new areas to explore. An interesting new is the abandoned amusement park and in this area and I recommend to keep active the volume because you can hear sounds of laughter coming from the Ferris wheel abandoned, as well as from the old and unsafe bumper cars, but as already noted there is no one there.

83

84 | Virtual Second night - Issue 37 - April 2015

F

or those who have already visited the island in the past can easily notice that some areas remained similar to past seasons, for example an old half-destroyed building with a large and elegant black chandelier very different from the style of the whole land, and right next of it there are papers flying freely around the room as if someone had just thrown or simply dropped them. It is not the only one, there is also a room in one of the many buildings that you can access and be in front of a room completely empty, inside there is nothing but a chair in the center and turned to the window, while other papers hover in the air in front of the invisible observer. The city has more roads compared to the past and that you can explore as well as the new areas and this is also why the sim still an excellent destination for photographs, of course also for the simple exploration so I recommend everyone to visit it at least once or for those who have already seen in the past to come back to see how it is evolved over time. Probably over time and with the arrival of the new seasons the island will be remodeled again, but I don't think that will change from what it was in the beginning, Meaningless City will remain forever a desolate and mysterious city where miracles don't happen.

In this place we are at the last step, the pià difficult, one in which the "competition" is so great and the author compares, and on his own "need" to write about what can "earn" in terms of fame and money. In any case, if you do not want or can not get this far, remain the landscapes and the clicking of typewriters and computer keyboards ... in Second Life too.
