VIRTUAL SECOND NIGHT Dear readers, The end of the year 2014 is coming! We can make a very satisfactory balance of the challenges that we set at the beginning of the year . First of all we are proud of the final purchase of a brand that was a benchmark in the Metaverse, that is to say the magazine “Second-night”. This acquisition, combined with our years of experience, has produced a single magazine, in English since the last summer, which looks to the changing times Our editorial policy has not changed, our magazine is about various topics that differentiate the virtual 3D worlds, we are able to make visible all those who believe in their ideas. One of the most recent challenges in the field of virtual reality comes from Philip Rosedale, the founder of Second Life. His latest venture: High Fidelity, will be a virtual world that looks beyond our computer screens to the coming generation of

virtual reality headsets. It’s more real, and it's a big idea, High Fidelity expects that it will take more than one small startup to make it happen. Probably also Second Life will be improved in the same direction. So we can be happy with the new techniques of interactive realism . However that user must be conscious of the risks associated with dependence on social networks in general, to avoid deleterious effects on its real existence. Bytheway, Second Life is wonderful in this period, let's travel and enjoy the wonderful views that users have made. I wish you a very happy December, filled with all of your favorite thing and especially with your favorite people. And I look forward to hearing from you! while we are waiting for the next Christmas!

The Quest to Put More Reality in

Virtual Reality

P

hilip Rosedale is telling me about his new company, but I can’t stop myself from looking down at my hands. With palms up, I watch with fascination as I slowly wiggle my fingers and form the “OK” sign. I curl my hands into fists as I reach my arms out in front. They look pinker than normal but work as usual. When I look back up at Rosedale, he’s wearing a smile, and his eyebrows rise slightly. “Isn’t it cool?” he says. In my right ear, I hear a quiet chuckle from one of his colleagues, Ryan Karpf, standing just outside my vision.

It is cool, because nothing that I’m seeing is real. Though our conversation appears to be happening in a tastefully lit club, I am actually sitting in front of a laptop in a San Francisco office wearing a virtual-reality headset and headphones. I’m trying out a new platform for virtual worlds in development by Rosedale’s startup, High Fidelity. When I put on the virtual-reality goggles, I saw the view from my avatar’s eyes; as I moved my head, motion sensors in the goggles controlled the movements of the avatar’s head.

Virtual Seond night - Issue 33 - December 2014 |

Moving my hands in the real world controlled the avatar’s hands, thanks to an infrared motion sensor mounted on the front of the headset. I could gesture for emphasis, and look from person to person as the conversation flowed or my attention drifted. More important, I could get a read on what Rosedale and Karpf were thinking as they spoke or listened—because their head movements and facial expressions mirrored what their real bodies were doing. Each had logged in from a laptop with a small 3-D camera perched on its screen; the camera captured their expressions, down to eye blinks and lip movements. Their virtual mouths synched with their real words. After the initial unfamiliarity wore off, chatting with Rosedale and Karpf in virtual space was much the same as it would have been in real space.

A

s always it comes the most fascinating period of the year with the thousands of shades of blue and white, the period of hot coffee, to warm blankets and a crackling and cheerful fire. It's time that the snow falls and especially you feel in the air the scent of the Christmas holidays. Everything is covered with a soft and white coat and everyone becomes more smiling and happy, hard to believe but this is a real magic. And so, another year draws to a close, another year collects what has happened in twelve months and says goodbye to let pass a new best time than the last giving opportunities for all. Also we take this opportunity to offer you our best wishes for a Merry Christmas and invite you to continue to follow us in the year to come.

I

t's Christmas and Second Life is tinged with white expanses of snow and ice, green tree decorated with light and red, the color that symbolizes this holiday. This time of year is perhaps one of the richest of events, places to explore, hunts and gifts of all the year so you better start now. Clearly everyone passes these days of celebration in the way they prefer and with loved ones or friends by visiting winter fairs scattered SL, problaby shopping doesn't ever stop, but this time of year I bet that everyone have spent a bit' more than usual. Generally discounts not helped to save money in your pocket, but it's Christmas! Every city, forest, shop is beautifully decorated for this holidays, snow, toys, candy, mistletoe, especially Christmas trees and gifts, maybe some of these is really a gift for visitors. Might look like similar now all the lands, but each one has an original touch and not always predictable. However, not all the lands are created

Virtual Seond night - Issue 33 - December 2014 |

simply for exploration, in fact in some of these is recommended to search carefully because they could hide small gifts. The Christmas hunt aren't new, however it is always an enjoyable pastime seek hidden treasures, for example the POE, Peace on Earth, by now at the seventh edition and really accessible to everyone since it's free. In this hunt participate over a hundred shops, so over a hundred gifts totally free if you are smart enough to find them all. Other events and hunt? There is the Midwinter Faire, the Chrimasmas Gacha at DRD store, the Inspiration Point Hunt, the Winter event at Tengoku No Rakuennon and don't forget the Arcade! Obviously this aren't all hunts and events ongoing, but certainly a good part. Probably all these events you already have the full agenda and with it also the wishlist, but isn't over! This time of year also brings with it the Adventure Calendar that give to the one

61

62 | Virtual Second night - Issue 33 - December 2014

click on it a gift once a day and continue for every day of the month, one day one gift, but you better don't forget them because once past midnight the gift of the previous day it's no longer avariable. At this point I can only wish a happy holidays, Merry Christmas and hope everyone to spend these happy days of celebration both in SL and in RL, and for the rest we will see next year,

ne of the most intersting place to visit in Second Life is LEA,The Linden Endowment for the Arts . (from its site: http://lea-sl.org/about) It was established to help create a center of arts activity in Second Life. It is a collaborative venture between Linden Lab and the arts community. Guided by a dedicated board of renowned Second Life artists,

123

the LEA is committed to providing access to engaging experiences in the arts for the Second Life community. Through its exhibitions, programs, and events, the LEA fosters awareness of artists’ contributions to our virtual world and encourages others to get involved and be inspired.

During the current moth at LEA you can visit the exphosition Chaos by Daco Monday, that is part of the project "The algorithm" supported by the Linden Endowement for the Arts. We meet the artist at the exposithion and tolked with him. Carmy - Hi Daco, your art installation disorients the visitor. Daco – Hi, it's difficult to explain the chaos. In my opionion Life is an immense chaos. C. - I am intrigued by the superimposition of images D. - Three different expressions , three studies of expression : scream, meditative, thoughtful. Three different views of life in the same entity. C. - How would you define this type of installation, only digital ? D. - I can define it 3D graphic, digital, interactive art installation. We're in a three-dimensional drawing, interactive and digital ... it changes ... according to ourselves. The artist declares also: An artistic pathway, a hymn to utopia, a light, a North star which leads mankind. My art starts from existential issues and reflections that occur in the cultural change which affects mankind nowadays. The art is simply a tool which makes "human knowledge" more human. It simply disseminates modern global culture, it interprets it as a multi reality, a reality made up of different individuals, of interconnected universes that create the dynamism of global universal culture. The exposition will be open until the end of December 2014.

Interviewto Chraeloos about ‌

L

ast October 18 was unveiled City Bhavana Ashram , I'm back to talk with Chraeloos about; in Sl are not many Ashrams or similar places, for what reason did you decide to found a new one? -It was a group effort between Swami Luminos, Szavanna, Rhiannon Dragoone and myself. We felt the desire to have an environment unique to SL that is inspired by RL ashrams in the sense that we are here to support spiritual and philosophical growth both short-term and long-term, depending on the individual interest. We all come from various different traditions and communities within SL and RL and felt that it would be nice to have a place where those of like-mind and similar interests could come together to relax, learn and grow. We are a group of long-term friends who were able to connect from all different places in the world, despite cultural and religious differences, thanks to the various communities in SL. Here at the ashram, we aim to work in cooperation with the already established communities to help avatars (and the people behind them) transcend the typical boundaries of race, age, religion, etc. and come to meet in a place where they are welcomed and encouraged to share their own beliefs while still being open to receiving others' thoughts. I visited the place; and inevitably the thought came back to the true Indian ashram. I would like you to tell me what are the objectives of these shared spaces and open to what and why. -I'm so glad the place resonated for you! Within the sim we have a few places aimed at different activities. We have a forest campsite meeting area where we hold regular philosophy discussions. There is a gallery and bonfire where we host dances, rituals, and artists who inspire some kind of contemplation or have

133

134 | Virtual Second night - Issue 33 - December 2014

a generally spiritual aim. At the main ashram building we have space for yoga, where we host yoga sessions as well as discussions on yoga-based topics. Across the hall we have a meditation room where there is always space for private meditation but we also have guided meditations and dharma talks. In the center we have a space for concerts and gatherings as we have a few pianists and jazz artists who play for us. We also have a cultural center in the sky where we have a stage, a library and a movie center. We hope that people will come to enjoy the space even when there isn't an event as there are many places for personal use as well as time with friends relaxing, chatting, etc. I read from your notes that you read meetings on topics and authors dealing with the "discovery and nurturing of one's self"; could you tell me something about it, related to the experience in SL? -All of us who came together to create this wonderful space have come from various different backgrounds and locations RL. It was through SL that we connected and have learned so much from each other both spiritually and secularly. We all strongly believe that it is through platforms such as this, where the stereotypes and biases drop away, that we can transcend labels of religions and other traditions and instead get to the basic teachings that are found among all traditions worldwide throughout history that of cultivating heart/mind. The name of the ashram itself speaks to this; "cittabhavana" means cultivating heart/mind. Whether or not you believe in a self/ Self, we can all agree that there is some benefit to working on inner growth. As is commonly quoted, all change starts from within. As human beings, we have a responcibility to ourselves and those around us, the environment even, to be the best we can be. That doesn't mean that we have to strive for some ideal, but that we can be aware in each moment to allow for conscious-being. By that I mean being able to give yourself and therefore

others the care and attention that you deserve. There have been studies done that show that any practice our avatars do is mirrored in our physical body. People who have physical limitations are able to experience and explore things they may not be able to in RL. So, for these and many other reasons we believe that SL has the ability to reach a wide-range of people in ways that perhaps they wouldn't be comfortable exploring in public spaces - such as meditation, yoga, and other methods of self-inquiry from art and music to discussions. It is our hope to provide space for people to develop these interests and expand their boundaries from the comfort of their own homes, with no monetary obligation. It is perhaps too often these days that it is advertised to "Get Enlightened! Only $99.99 for the box set". Here, at the Ashram, we offer no expectations (beyond compassion for your fellow avatars), no "quick enlightenment" program, only the opportunity to look inside and see what nourishes you, and then see that we are here to provide that space for you to grow in. We have the power to teach each other so much about ideas and practices that perhaps we wouldn't encounter in RL.
