VIRTUAL SECOND NIGHT Hello dear readers, Virtual reality is certainly an extremely fascinating subject, and from being a fictional and futuristic concept we have gone, in a few years, the development of technologies that will amaze. Oculus Rift has definitely done a lot about himself, but the last are so many projects (for virtual reality and augmented reality) that have appeared. Last on the list HTC Vive, created in collaboration with Valve and coming to market as a competitor to Oculus Rift. Project Morpheus is instead the Sony display the name dedicated to PlayStation 4, while the augmented reality one of the biggest news is a Microsoft project called Hololens. Surely there is still much work to do to improve all of these technologies in order to make more and more real virtual worlds ... but what does it really mean real? There speaks Michael Abrash, Oculus guru and star of a part of the Facebook F8 conference dedicated to virtual reality in 2015. In any case, over the years are many scientists who have made this question in psychology and neuroscience fact has often tried to investigate what our senses can be misleading as to what we perceive as a solid, and the results are quite interesting. Our reality is, more often than we think, not be so real ...

Pyramiden
Ametista club Writer and photographer Mafalda Diesel
O
n this occasion we will not show gothic, fantasy or enchanted gardens lanl, but we will bring you to a place where there is an anti utopia. Pyramiden is a place where those who pass can see what remains of an abandoned periphery, of a ghastly scenario that can fascinate or abducting in a disturbing post-apocalyptic setting.
30 | VSN - Issue 46 - February 2016
And to accompany you on this trip we interviewed Oskar Luna, owner of Pyramiden. Q: First of all thanks for your time, I would like to ask you -as first question- how did your land and why did you choose this urban style? A: Thank you, well the idea of having a sim is born more or less a year and a half ago, along with two friends decided to rent a piece of land to have a space where we could see each other... From that day our idea took shape before becoming a rustic village, and then, after becoming the owner, the current Pyramiden. Well, the urban style... I have to say that in my opinion has a certain charm, it seemed nevertheless an interesting idea and undeveloped in SL.
Q: This theme is not simple and even less so widespread, just think of all the gothic or gorean regions on the entire Second Life, well, it was hard to achieve it? Did you have any moments of despair or have had friends who supported you in this project? A: Luckily for me I had good employees in the realization of my sim from Sniper Siemens who always followed me and advised at all times of the construction. An important role they have also had my friends more tight they have always supported and helped me. And sometimes it contained!

34 | VSN - Issue 46 - February 2016
Q: What kind of services or entertainment you offer to Pyramiden? What can find the urban lovers in your "kingdom"? A: Lovers of photography can definitely find a lot of instyle corners where to develop some good shot, in fact several photographers in SL have found here a perfect location to give vent to their creativity as ô€€ Magda Schmidtzau.
Q: Do you have any future project? Some ambition ready to come out to spoiler us? A: Well... this is a hard question! I never stop having projects in my head, but those who are "in the pipeline" are as follows. We will be at Harvey Music Festival with the the members of "Solo Donna" for collecting funds for Aisla Onlus, then we'll participate in a marathon to raise funds for associations that do not use animal testing in research on rare diseases. While in Pyramiden we'll build an area dedicated entirely to zombies and one to painball, then there will be a treasure hunt that will allow anyone to participate to explore the land. Last but not least, lately I'd like to dedicate a part of the sim to gacha but who knows...!

The Carnival
What's behind the masks Writer and photographer Zily Resident
L
ike every year the Carnival returns even in Second Life, and even this year we can see masks of all kinds from the most classical to more personalized ones. Anyway every day you can choose to be who or what you want, and unfortunately this event loses some of its charm, but it'ss a good excuse to enrich the inventory of new purchases.

C
arnival is synonymous with joy, colors and it's impossible to not think about Venice, the Italian city known for its artistic heritage and for this important event of the year, so why not find out more? Masks have always been an important feature of the Venetian carnival. Traditionally people were allowed to wear them between the festival of St. Stephen's Day and the start of the carnival season at midnight of Shrove Tuesday. As masks were also allowed on Ascension and from October 5 to Christmas, people could spend a large portion of the year in disguise. Maskmakers enjoyed a special position in society, with their own laws and their own guild. Venetian masks can be made of leather, porcelain or using the original glass technique. The original masks were rather simple in design, decoration, and often had a symbolic and practical function. Nowadays, most Italian masks are made with the application of gesso and gold leaf and are hand-painted using natural feathers and gems to decorate.[citation needed] However, this makes them rather expensive when compared to the widespread, low-quality masks produced mainly by American factories. This competition accelerates the decline of this historical craftsmanship peculiar to the city of Venice.
44 | VSN - Issue 46 - February 2016
S
everal distinct styles of mask are worn in the Venice Carnival, some with identifying names like the Buata, given this history and its grotesque design elements. The bauta was usually worn by men, but many paintings done in the 18th century also depict women wearing this mask. The mask named Colombina is a half-mask, only covering the wearer's eyes, nose, and upper cheeks. It is often highly decorated with gold, silver, crystals and feathers. It is held up to the face by a baton or is tied with ribbon as with most other Venetian masks. The Plague Doctors, with its long beak, is one of the most bizarre and recognisable of the Venetian masks, though it did not start out as carnival mask at all but as a method of preventing the spread of disease. The Moretta or Servetta muta was a small strapless black velvet oval mask with wide eyeholes and no lips or mouth worn by patrician women. The iconic modern Venetian mask is the Volto, it is often stark white though also frequently gilded and decorated, and is commonly worn with a tricorn and cloak. It is secured in the back with a ribbon. Unlike the Moretta, the Volto covers the entire face including the whole of the chin and extending back to just before the ears and upwards to the top of the forehead, also unlike the Moretta it depicts simple facial features like the nose and lips.

A
nother classic character from the Italian stage is Pantalone, meaning he who wears the pants or father figure in Italian, is usually represented as a sad old man with an oversized nose like the beak of a crow with high brows and slanted eyes. Another famous mask is Arlecchino, meaning harlequin in Italian, is a zanni character of the commedia. He is meant to be a kind of "noble savage", devoid of reason and full of emotion, a peasant, a servant, even a slave. The Zanni character is another classic of the stage. His mask is a half mask in leather, showing him with low forehead, bulging eyebrows and a long nose with a reverse curve towards the end. It is said that the longer his nose, the more stupid he is. The low forehead is also seen as a sign of stupidity Well his is only a small part of the history of the Venice Carnival because this festival is celebrated all over the world, even in Second Life.We will be at Harvey Music Festival with the the members of "Solo Donna" for collecting funds for Aisla Onlus, then we'll participate in a marathon to raise funds for associations that do not use animal testing in research on rare diseases. While in Pyramiden we'll build an area dedicated entirely to zombies and one to painball, then there will be a treasure hunt that will allow anyone to participate to explore the land. T
halia Heckroth™ has been part of the Second Life® fashion community for years. When she launched her eponymous clothing line, she immediately stood out from the crowd with her minimalist designs. Heckroth’s fashion exemplify the true aesthetic of minimalism which too many mistake for simplicity. There is nothing easy about contouring the ideal form and then embellishing it with subtle, but profound details. When you look at the architecture of the clothing, you see there is complexity of design within a simplicity of form. VSN decided to check in on Heckroth and find out more about this architect of fashion. VSN: How long have you been part of the SL fashion world? What roles or positions have you worked in? What haven’t you done yet? Thalia Heckroth: I entered into SL fashion all the way back in 2008. Working in a variety of roles from marketing for the Costa Rica sims, owning several publications to award-winning sims. Having my own blog since 2010, exploring photography and film making as well as advising brands in SL to designing my own line of clothing...All interesting roads. Worrying about what you haven't yet accomplished is pointless, so I tend to live in the moment, and my store, Thalia Heckroth, is my priority right now. 54 | VSN - Issue 46 - February 2016
56 | VSN - Issue 46 - February 2016
VSN: What was it that pushed you to go from modeling, photography and blogging to designing you own clothing? TH: When you wear someone else's design, your personal expression is somewhat limited. The thought of having total control over what I wear was too exciting a notion to pass up. It's been a long learning process, but the end result is definitely worth the effort. VSN: Where do you find inspiration for your designs? TH: Generally, I draw my ideas from my own wardrobe. Every piece I create must be something I'd wear in real life. VSN: How do you describe your fashion aesthetic? TH: Minimalism is definitely a concept I'd apply to the majority of my work in SL. I think that sometimes, the most simple ideas can be the most beautiful. Of course, many items I produce have been meticulously detailed, but I'm careful to ensure they don't look over-embellished.
VSN: How do your real life and Second Life style compare? How are the similar? How are they alike? TH: As I mentioned, my tastes in real life and Second Life are largely one and the same. Of course, having creative control over my clothing inworld means that I can add my own personal flair and interpret pieces exactly how I like. VSN: What trends do you see on the horizon in fashion? What trends are you tired of? TH: I think the beauty of SL is that there never is any overriding trend - there truly is something for everyone. Designers produce items that reflect their own personality and style. VSN: The SL fashion world has changed dramatically over the years. Please mention a few changes that make it better and a few that make it worse, harder. TH: I believe that the emergence of mesh bodies has been simultaneously the best thing and the most challenging thing to happen to SL fashion.

60 | VSN - Issue 46 - February 2016
VSN: If you were a magician and could instantly change three things about SL what would they be? TH: I would remove all lag. I would make all copybotters disappear. I would make graphics better for all SL users. VSN: If you were a magician and could instantly change three things about fashions, what would they be? TH: I would make all poses in SL more natural looking. There is nothing that ruins the appearance of a fashion shot more than bizarrely positioned limbs. I would make modesty a must. There is nothing sexier than a woman who respects herself. I would make the use of Lolas a criminal offense.
We asked Heckroth to play a quick round of would you rather. Would you rather have a cook or a maid? Both. Would you rather hear the good news or the bad news first? Bad news first. Would you rather be your own boss or work for someone else? Being my own boss. Would you rather have nosy neighbors or noisy neighbors? Noisy. Would you rather live in Antarctica or the Sahara Desert?
