It’s hard to be humble First, there was a newspaper. That’s gone.

In it’s place : a newsmagazine. In spite of the fact that we were the only ones to make the jump from a newspaper.

What have we discovered? Long hours. Lots of advertisers.

Hashtags. Nathan banning hasthags. Megan yelling at her computer.

Triumph.

Currently, The Viewpoint is up for five awards in the VHSL State Writing/Photo/Design Contest. Five. Ask your friends at any other high school which ones they’re in. To save you some time, I’ll tell you. They’re not in any. You’re holding in your hands the only magazine locally to still be up for individual awards in this contest.

Nothing screams fall more than the cheers and chants of the Wildcat Crazies at a home football game. Whether you are a freshman learning the ways of being a wildcat or a senior full of spirit, football games are a must. Don’t be afraid to dye your hair orange, paint yourself maroon and bring a bucket to bang on. Why stop there? Check out page 13 to find out the when and where for volleyball, field hockey, cross-country and football.

Along with the changing of leaves comes the change of weather. Fight off the chills with a warm, pumpkin spice latte or a steamy cup of apple cider. The Viewpoint sampled three popular spots to taste who has the best pumpkin spice latte in the area. Is it Wawa, Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts? Turn the page to see which we found to be the best.

Don’t forget to finish spirit week off strong at the pep rally, homecoming game and dance on Saturday night. Get a group of friends together for dinner and pictures before heading to the dance.

If you’re looking for a place for dinner, try Kobe on Garrisonville Road, Zibibbo in Aquia or Bravo in the Village at Towne Centre. Check out the magazine in your hands for photographers and florists to make your night memorable.

Starbucks pumpkin spice latte does not disappoint: full of flavor and smooth. Typical Starbucks. This coffee is exactly what you’d expect with a syrupy, creamy taste. In comparison to Wawa’s version, this coffee tastes considerably more like pumpkin, than spice.

Perfect for October.

Also, there is also something to be said about the atmosphere at Starbucks. With tables, couches and free Wi-Fi, Starbucks makes for a desirable location that allow customers to sit down for a while to enjoy their purchase.

The price point though, is not as attractive.

At over $4.65 for a grande (medium), your wallet isn’t nearly as happy as your tummy.

Wawa’s coffee taste more like spice and less like pumpkin compared to the other coffees. This difference makes Wawa’s coffee a more desirable outside of fall because the flavor is not so pumpkin-centered.

It’s a beverage that can be enjoyed further into the holiday season.

For those looking for a smooth, latte taste, this isn’t it. Wawa coffee is creamy, but it still taste like coffee.

Another plus about Wawa’s coffee? No waiting.

Self-serve coffee means you’re not held up by someone in front of you deciding if they want their decaf skim frappachino with or without foam. It’s perfect for a quick stop to warm up your chilly fall morning.

The price, at just over $1.50, makes it easy treat yourself often.

Dunkin’ Donuts

Dunkin’ Donuts coffee is OK. Nothing more.

Their beverage has a typical coffee taste opposed to a more latte taste of the others we compared. The prominent flavor with Dunkin’ Donuts pumpkin spice is coffee, with undertones of a spicy flavor.

To Dunkin’s credit, you get your coffee fast with hardly any wait, but the atmosphere isn’t anything special. However, you’ll be in there for such a short period, that it doesn’t really make a difference.

Another highlight is that you can grab a fresh doughnut while you’re there. At just under $2 for a medium, it’s easy to talk yourself into a doughnut,too.

Pokémon X and Y Releasing Oct. 12 is the sixth installment of the Pokémon Franchise, Pokémon X and Y. As with previous generations, X and Y are set in the Kalos region. Age old Pokémon ideas, such as starter Pokémon, return; however, there are many new ideas coming to life in X and Y. The first new type in 10 years will be released, the Fairy type. New Fairy types, as well as existing Pokémon, will receive the type addition.

Mega Evolutions is another aspect. Caused by certain Pokémon holding their respective Mega Stone, the effect is Pokémon who gain a boost in stats, a more intimidating appearance and useful abilities.

However, Pokémon evolve back into their original form after battle. Some examples of Pokémon that can Mega evolve are Garchomp, Charizard, Mewtwo and Lucario.

The biggest drawback to Pokémon X and Y is that it can only be played on the Nintendo 3DS or 2DS, meaning those who haven’t already spent $120 or $160 to own one of these systems will not be able to play Pokémon X & Y on their preexisting DS lite or DSi system.

Battlefield 4

The new, up and coming Battlefield gameis fourth in its series. With all new weapons, vehicles, maps and new multiplayer modes, players are raving about this first-person shooter. It shows promise in that it shows new ways of playing multiplayer.

There are a few new modes for multiplayer, but Commander mode stands out, a unique addition to any multiplayer game.

In this type of play, one player is designated as the “commander.” This person doesn’t actually play on the battlefield. Instead, he has a special top-down view of the map where he can supply teammates with supply drops and even order in missiles or air support.

However, the commander does not use these abilities freely. The availability of the capabilities is directly affected by performance of the players on the ground. Also, with the Next Generation Consoles, the commander can play his role though a tablet or smart device.

Made by EA Digital Illusions CE, Battlefield 4 comes out Oct. 29 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation3. It will also release later on Xbox One and Playstation4.

Batman: Arkham Origins The beginnings of something dark and mysterious, yet good and justifying, is emerging the beginning of Batman’s story is told in Batman: Arkham Origins.

As the Dark Knight’s adventure begins, Batman deals with mostly petty criminals such as robbers, mobsters and gang leaders. However, during the Christmas season, something happens. Batman is faced with a new threat, one he has never faced, threatening even his life.

Playing as the main character, the player will fight various goons and criminals investigating his way to find the danger that threatens Gotham City.

The developers of the game wanted the player to explore more than just Arkham City. Now, all of Gotham is at the player’s disposal.

The game has improved graphics and gameplay by adding more gadgets and combat techniques.

Batman: Arkham Origins is made by Warner Bros. Games Montréal and will be released Oct. 25 and available on Xbox 360, PlayStation3 and Wii U. Josh Guillemette october 2013 l the viewpoint l 9

Over the years seeing and learning how to do things, it really teaches you how to deal with large crowds and doing what the audience likes and wants to see, like the fire.

What’s it like to work with your sister?

It really makes it easy to work with one another. We can feed off each other’s performance. I think we make ourselves better just because of pure competition.

Junior Why did you start twirling?

We liked the purpose of twirling and how different it was than to just do regular dance.

You can really be an individual in twirling and try lots of new things.

What are your future plans?

I plan to go to college, but it [college] would be chosen because of my major first over twirling.

What has twirling done for you?

Spirit of competition and wanting to push yourself harder. It’s kind of awesome!

What’s it like to work with your sister?

Different. We bicker, but we learn from our mistakes and really push each other.

It’s About the Sound Marching band members take a look at why they do what they do.

Being a member of marching band is work.

Hard work.

Who wants to do that?

Drum major, junior Elayna Youngson does. “We get to show people what we love,” Youngson said.

She continued, “It’s not a lot of physical activity, but it takes a lot of skill to do it all and to make it a good show. The smallest things can affect the big show,” Youngson said.

It takes time and dedication to be in marching band. Junior clarinet player Katie Whitehead said,

“It pretty much takes up your entire schedule every day.”

Band members must accept the responsibility of time, dedication and one more thing: discipline.

Youngson said, “The only true discipline is selfdiscipline.” Mountain View band members take their tradition of excellence very seriously.

Youngson continued, “For us it’s pride. We’re really proud of what we do.”

MV band members love performing music and through all the hot afternoons, tired muscles and

repetition to perfection, members support each other.

Senior clarinet player Torii Masinsin said, “I love the people in it, and he [band director Doug Armstrong] really inspires people.”

Youngson said, “We have to build off of each other to be motivated and to get the work done.”

It’s never about scores or being noticed. She added, “It’s about the music.”
