Kingsgate with Art

ABSTRACT

The project is based around the Kingsgate Workshop artists studio and attempts to learn about the cultural industries of local artists and the residents, extending the arts activities of Kingsgate Workshop into kilburn's communities.

The vision of this project is to mitigate the employment difficulties of artists, for example, those who cannot afford the studio's rent, lack business consciousness, and so on. At the same time, enrich residents daily art activities.

The project's framework is based on the ethics of co-design by Pablo Sendra. Propose developing the existing demolished space and those vacant sites or buildings that have low utilization. These appropriate sites will "suture" the Kingsgate Workshop、street infrastructure and public space to create a local cultural infrastructure network. To achieve these short-term goals through two visions: First, build an inclusive and dynamic platform for all types of artists and makers; Second, form an art bridge between artists and the locals. Through interaction and co-design between artists and residents, release cultural diversity, inclusiveness, creativity, and cultural potential.

At the same time, based on these networks, we will create long-term goals that imagine this network as a continuous growth system that radiates to other cultural places, like music venues, theatre, and so on.

Brief:

Co-design requires more than simply individual ideas; It also requires actions that suggest group thought. Community-based codesign must be in place once a concept design has been co-created till the end. The intensity will undoubtedly vary depending on the project's stage.

RESEARCH QUESTION

How to establish a co-creative cultural infrastructure for the local artists and residents in Kilburn?

METHODOLOGY

Site survey

Interview with artists and residents

A potential scenarios for local cultural network

Brief:

Partnerships with community organisations, neighbourhood associations, local companies, third-sector organisations, local governments, and other stakeholders are crucial for delivering a co-design process. Communities may jointly drive the process, obfuscating the distinction between the process's promoter and participants.

Brief:

Investigating the existing social infrastructures— those places and institutions that permit gatherings, social interactions, and care networks formation. Co-design process can learn from those places and organisations that promote social interaction.

Brief:

It is essential to consider historical injustices, structural inequalities, and power disparities when forming partnerships, conducting preliminary research, organising co-design activities, interacting with people, and making deciisions. The outcome of the co-design process are responsible to befinit everyone and does not prejudice or exclude any community.

Brief:

In order to resolve power inequalities, it is crucial to equip individuals with the abilities to take part in and co-lead the decision-making process by providing educational events. Extra effort need to be exerted to engage communities that are less inclined to participate, which entails offering various forms of participation to different groups.

Brief:

Give a clear explanation of the co-design process goals, considered spaces, how the co-created proposals will be used, and what participants can expect to come out of it. It takes time annd money to plan, set up, and facilitate a co-design process using the aforementioned concepts. Therefore, codesign needs to be factored into the timeline and budget of every project.

Kingsgate Workshop used to be an Victorian warehouse reused in the 19th century, which was built as a building factory by John Allen and his Sons. After that, the site became a furniture storage and other business until it was demolished. In 1978, a group of local people proposed to the Camden Council to prevent demolition and transform it into an artists and markers studio. Now developed into a multi-use studio available for artists and markers.

INTERVIEW WITH ARTISTS

The interior of the workshop, which was not intentionally designed but built by the artists themselves, has many illogical aspects. Through the interviews, artist residents raised the issue of the lack of necessary spaces, such as storage rooms, lounges, larger exhibition spaces, and convenient corridors. In addition, some artists also noted the importance of space for communication, not only with the artists but also with the public.

ARTISTS'S CHANLLEGE

Economic Instability Due to the unstable income, many young practitioners and even multi-year practitioners need to work part-time or full-time to support their artistic dreams. Selling art is the main source of income for artists. Some artists find it difficult to market themselves to clients because they feel that entrepreneurship is contrary to their artistic temperament. Without the help and representation of art galleries, it is difficult for artists to reach more customers and formal sales. Especially for some young artists, they are less commercially aware and unable to properly price their works.

Development & Recognition Many artists say that the recognition of their work is their greatest motivation to continue creating. The reality, however, is that not all artists get a lot of exposure. This has somewhat dampened artists' confidence.

Social Networks Artists are keen to build a social network. In the case of a lack of inspiration, connecting with colleges can spark new ideas. Collaboration and communication among artists in different fields is beneficial to artists' professional development

Vulnerable Group Support The arts should not belong only to a minority, and the rights of the vulnerable group should be taken into account. The disabled, young practitioners, and marginalized populations should be given some special assistance to participate in the arts.

INTERVIEW WITH LOCAL PEOPLE

Based on the conclusion from the survey of artists, 20 kilburn residents were interviewed about the frequency of exhibition visiting, the annual spending on artworks, and their interest in art workshops. They ranked exhibitions, art purchases, and then workshop participation. Then, detailed research was about their focus on exhibition choices, the types of workshops they were interested in, and the their choices of favoriate venues. As co-creators, public input on the interaction of functional spaces in Kilburn is also important to design decisions.

Based on a survey of artists' needs and dilemmas, five categories of spaces have been compiled: Artist & maker workshop, Career support, Community engagement & education, Co-creative programme, Market & merchandise. Some of these spaces are only accessible for artists and some are public friendly. Combined with the results of the questionnaire survey of the Kilburn residents, the level of demand for these spaces by the public and artists was summarized and will be used as the basis for the actual layout of the venue.

After chossing potential sites that include vacant space、demolished building、community centres、school、retail shops, extend some functional area from Kingsgate into these sites and adaptive reuse. They are divided into different art industries with short-term goals and try to activate community's cultural diversity and improve career support.

CASE STUDIES-MEANWHILE GARDENS

Project statement: Pandemic periods result in a 'decline' in urban vitality and the under-utilisation of urban space. More vacant land is often perceived as a sign of economic decline and is identified as inactive space. In this context, the effective use of unproductive community spaces can contribute to the sustainability of communities, streets and cities. The use of abandoned buildings, unused shops, open spaces, etc. can be offered to groups of organisations or individuals to engage in active commercial exchange activities, promoting the vitality of the local community and creating lasting economic and social value in the long term.

CASE STUDIES-LONDON DESIGN DISTRICT

1: Build an inclusive and dynamic platform for all types of artists and makers (provide more open studios and make it more dynamic and equitable.

2: Form an art bridge between artists and the local community (include community engagement and education support; cocreative programme and extensions; market and merchandise). Promote active art exchange and communication not just in Kingsgate but also in the surrounding community, at the same time promoting artists fame and reputation.

Based on the short-term network, we imagine this is a continuously growth system that will develop other cultural places in ten years in the local area, gradually developing into a relatively comprehensive cultural infrastructure. Promote business exchange and employmet opportunities, and provide a series of cultural experiences places for local residents and tourists, supporting local cultural diversity annd increasing social welfare.

VISION (SHORT-TERM GOALS)

This website serves the residents of Kilburn. They can make full use of website to search for cultural infrastructure in their local community and enrich their leisure life.

URBAN POCKET FARM

—— A SELF-SUFFICIENT MODULAR FARM SYSTEM

BACKGROUND In the context of urbanization, both natural and unnatural factors have strengthened the connection between cities, agriculture and people in the process of urban development. The urban expansion problem we are facing at this stage will inevitably cover some agricultural land, affecting the pattern and nature of the food system. To promote sustainable urban development and build a resilient community, I have initiated research and exploration in productive landscape design that created a self-sufficient modular farm system for the New Green Land community, mainly in terms of education, food production and distribution, and sustainability.

The project includes new agroecological technologies such as vertical farms and aquaponic systems.

AIM: This project plays an active role in promoting urban health, public participation, social inclusion, and a sustainable urban environment.

The site is located in Xindimei Green Community, Tuanjie Avenue, Hongshan District, Wuhan City, Hubei Province. The traffic condition and accessibility around the site are good

User

The main groups in the community are students, housewives, the elderly, commuters, vendors, and children. Students are mainly active after 6 PM, the elderly usually go out for exercise at 10 am, and commuters mainly go out at 8 am and return at 6 PM

The Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period
In the age of small-scale peasant economy, people were self-sufficient in their own production to
In the 17th century, this continued for a long time, had ample food production
In the early 18th century, agricultural production was severely reduced by outbreaks of plague due to poor sanitation and plague caused by locusts
In modern society, agriculture has been seriously affected by the environment As a result of the epidemic, food imports and exports have been restricted, resulting in food shortages for a certain period of time

3. Food processing and packaging

To observe the growth of crops, users can scan the crops in the app, and can observe the conditions, soil conditions, and maturity seasons required for crop growth in real time in the future; picking and harvesting on the harvesting day can be done with the help of tools rented by the farm. Families who want to increase their income can participate in the food packaging process to conduct food supervision and quality inspection; other users can place food orders on the app and the community trucks will be responsible for delivery, and they need to pay delivery fees to increase community income.

1. Discarded scaffolding is collected from the city for recycling. The scaffolding structure provides the necessary flexibility to accommodate all types of fades, creating a lowcost modular system.

2. Combination with pallets and concrete planks to form an inexpensive, flexible and easily disassembled productive module.

3. Modules are presented as "production pods", including a soil bed, two aeroponics towers and an aquaponics system, which can be dismantled, expanded or reduced at any time.

Water is drawn from urban rivers, filtered and sterilized through a closed water circulation system and sent to households for use; some household water can be processed to irrigate crops and wash cars, saving water consumption

Organic Waste Management

The domestic waste is transported to the waste treatment station, and the organic fertilizer is produced by ecological treatment, and these wastes are used as soil enhancers instead of chemical fertilizers. Vegetables, fruits, etc. are used for the final waste generated by consuming fertilizers for recycling.

A 3.6 m x 3 m modular can produce up to 290kg of food per year. The cultivation of local varieties and seasonal products will be encouraged.

Personality Analysis

MORE THAN QUEER

A non-sexist bathing space designed to promote human communication and confront the issue of their gender perception.

INTRODUCTION

This is an inclusive bathing space that transcends gender perception. From a psychological point of view, I divide people into three personalities: Narcissism, Ordinary and Self-abasement

By anthropomorphizing space to achieve the fusion of different personalities and facilitate human-to-human communication.

Psychology outlines three types of personality: Narcissism (more showy than introverted)), Ordinary (showy equals introverted) and Self-abasement (showy less than introverted). The different colours represent the different personalities of people, with red representing the narcissist, yellow representing the ordinary personality and blue representing the inferior personality. Here, have observed these three personalities in their lives, recorded their body language, extracted the forms and transformed them into the following design symbols.

Model Group

combined the design symbols into dynamic drawings and transformed it into the model.

Site Analysis

The site was chosen in Fengshun County, south of Meizhou City, Guangdong Province, China's city of hot springs. With large underground hot spring reserves, high water temperatures, good water quality, a high flow rate and high medicinal efficacy, Fengshun County has great value for development and utilisation.

Through "BATH HISTORY" and other information about baths, have learned that baths are a popular place of healing in different cultures. People enjoy bathing and releasing their stress, which also contributes positively to their social life. Overall, it is a relaxing and reconciliatory space.

The Elements Section

Using the illustrations in the books and the relevant literature, have summarised several functional areas of the bath that will be used in my designs and formed in different combinations depending on the character of the person.

Circulation Diagram

I want to achieve the integration of different personalities in the form of space. Red represents narcissists; the space is open to show their own charm; yellow represents ordinary people; the space is semi-obscured; they sometimes like to show themselves, sometimes like to hide themselves; blue represents selfabasement; the space is private; multiple obscured structures are staggered between the various spaces to reduce the visual communication between people in order to achieve self-communication.

am N, a person who likes to show off myself without any reservation and wants to be noticed by others. But at times can be a bit sensitive and vulnerable.

I am O. am a moderate person who wants to live my life in peace.

I am S I always like to hide myself and reduce or avoid contact with others to prevent them from finding out my weaknesses.

With the accumulation of marine garbage, the discharge of waste water, commercial shipping and other factors, the water quality of the coastal area in Binhai Town, Pudong district, Shanghai is deteriorating gradually.

WATER PARADISE

AIM: A new type of hydrophilic space

User: People & Marine life

Introduction:

The project is concerned with the problem of marine water pollution in the coastal area of Binhai Town, Pudong District, Shanghai. In the context of deteriorating water pollution, it provides a new type of hydrophilic space for local coastal residents and a space for marine life activities.

I need a clean hydrophilic area

With the increasingly serious problem of water pollution, the number of hydrophilic activities decreased significantly. In 1990, the average number of hydrophilic visits was as high as 26, but it will be reduced to 4 in 2020. Imagine 10 years later, will people be reluctant to carry out hydrophilic activities?

The marine environment is precarious. It has severely affected the quality of life of the people living in this area and the living environment of marine life.

Water pollution has gradually become a hot topic in daily life. The government and people from all walks of life have put forward many measures to control water pollution.

The special structure of algae can adsorb heavy metals and has strong carbon dioxide fixation ability, which is very helpful to water purification; It converts carbon dioxide into oxygen through photosynthesis to meet human needs At the same time, algae also contain inorganic salts, which are fixed by photosynthesis to convert them into carbohydrates for fish feed.

Human activity needs

I used algae as a medium to create a space for human activities, and at the same time concretize human behavior needs. Mainly divided into people’s own behavioral needs, group behaviors of people, interactions between humans and animals, interactions between humans and plants.

People's own behavior and activities are mainly reflected in sleeping, oxygen inhalation, and self-learning.

Group life is mainly reflected in communication with others, sports, and water activities.

The interaction between humans and animals is mainly reflected in feeding birds, fishing, and playing with water creatures.

The interaction between humans and plants is embodied in the contact with plants. Observe and record the growth status of plants. Popular science education.

The algae experiment lasts for 21 days. By cultivating algae, observing and recording its growth process, the shapes of building structure, membrane structure and bubble structure are obtained. And deduced and transformed these three forms to get the final model form.

After many experiments, the growth trajectory of the algae is recorded to obtain the final architectural space, membrane structure and bubble structure shape.

And these shapes are deduced and transformed to form the spatial structure of the model.

Architecture

The generation of spatial volume is deduced in the form of points, lines and planes. Through experiments, it is concluded that the architectural space is a wrapped layout, represented by a square-shaped wire frame. The shape of the block is obtained through the deduction of the line, and the overall shape of the building is finally obtained.

Algae membrane

Extract the shape of the membrane structure in the experiment and perform deduction and transformation, generate a surface in the shape of a line, and copy multiple to get the membrane structure layer that finally adapts to the spatial layout.

This leisure space is disassembled into five parts from top to bottom:the algae membrane structure of the building, the bubble structure of the oxygen absorption layer, the space for human activities, the space for interaction between humans and aquatic organisms, and the space for aquatic organisms. This leisure space is disassembled into five parts from top to bottom:the algae membrane structure of the building, the bubble structure of the oxygen absorption layer, the space for human activities, the space for interaction between humans and aquatic organisms, and the space for aquatic organisms.

Oxygen bubble

The shape of the bubble structure in the experiment is extracted and deduced and transformed, and the plane shape is transformed into a 3-dimensional structure, and multiple oxygen-absorbing bubble layers are formed to adapt to the spatial hierarchy of the building and the layout of the membrane structure.

Classify the types of algae grown in different areas to analyze the distribution of marine life and the oxygen content of different algae species. The level of oxygen content affects people's mood. People’s mood will be better when active in areas with high oxygen content, and worse when active in areas with low oxygen content.

Oxygen Bubbles Structure

The bubble structure is mainly used to store the oxygen released by the algae plants. The oxygen is stored through the air bag and part of the oxygen is transported to the building through the exhaust port, which has met the survival needs of people.

People can choose bubbles for oxygen inhalation and leisure activities according to their own needs. Three bubbles of different sizes, small, medium, and large, are selected for analysis. Bubble No. 3 can accommodate three people for activities and has a low oxygen content; Bubble No. 1 is the smallest and can only accommodate one person for activities. Holds the highest oxygen content.
