Dear Friend, For years Bukurie and her children were living on the edge of hunger. She felt empty – not just because she hadn’t eaten, but because she had no hope. Bukurie’s husband died when she was 26 years old, leaving her with four children: Sajmir, Sara, Esma, and Izmire. This fatherless family survived in rural Abania on a small state benefit payment. It provided little. The harsh reality was that the State welfare remains the same, and prices increase about twice a month… every month. Every morning the four children walked three miles to school – on empty stomachs. Bukurie admits, “I tried to provide food for them every day. But often we just eat bread.” Through no fault of her own, life was filled with anxiety, hunger, uncertainty, and fear. And she was frightened for her children. How could life improve? Life was hopeless. That was before MWB offered Bukurie “Seeds of Hope”. In each Seeds of Hope box are packets of vegetable seeds – everything from tomatoes, to peas, to cucumbers, to corn. MWB also supported Bukurie with the tools to plant and tend the seeds, including garden tools, water pump, and hose. Now Bukurie sees light at the end of the tunnel. Today, Bukurie is a producer growing her own vegetables from seeds given by MWB.
Just two years ago Bukurie struggled to feed her children. Today, she has more than enough food - and now earns money from selling her wheat, beans, corn, cucumbers, and tomatoes. Last autumn Bukurie grew enough food to last all winter! Today Bukurie is celebrating because she and her children have enough to eat from crops they’ve grown by themselves! Over……..

Now she has flour to cook her daily bread. Now she can buy her children clothes, medicine, and their school pens and pencils. Sajmir can now attend secondary school. The children now go to school knowing there will be food to eat when they come home. Together, they are driven by hope, not by deprivation. They have hope for a better future.
Bukurie is transformed. Before she was hopeless. Her family now has more than enough to eat. “Now”, she exclaims, “these seeds have given me hope”. “On the inside I was dying, but those seeds brought about real change.” "You may call them Seeds of Hope, but for me these are 'Seeds of Life'.
