The University of Charleston was founded by the Southern Methodist denomination in 1888 as Barboursville Seminary in Barboursville, West Virginia, and became a college in 1889. In 1901, it was renamed Morris Harvey College in honor of a prominent donor. During the Great Depression, the college moved to Charleston to take advantage of the larger metropolitan area. As a result of the merger between the Methodist church North and South, the college disaffiliated from the denomination and Morris Harvey College became independent in 1942. From 1935 to 1947, the college was located in downtown Charleston, holding classes in several separate buildings. During these years, the college grew steadily, in part because of a merger with Kanawha Junior College and an affiliation with the Mason College of Fine Arts and Music. Recognizing the need for a unified campus, in 1947 construction of the present facilities began on the south bank of the Kanawha River. The Board of Trustees changed the name from Morris Harvey College to the University of Charleston on December 13, 1978. Today, the University still benefits from its location in the dynamic capital city and from the beauty of West Virginia's hills. Proximity to the seat of government, to the state's largest medical, commercial, and financial centers and to major research and manufacturing facilities provides excellent opportunities for experiential learning. The University serves the community as a focal point for numerous Intellectual, scientific, cultural, athletic and civic events. These interactions between the University and the community are vital to the achievement of the University's mission.

TRADITION NEVER GRADUATES THE 2010 CLASS Several years ago, the Golden Eagles decorated their locker room with several quotes. One of the quotes they chose was “Tradition Never Graduates.” They wanted to pass on their knowledge and experience to the younger members of the team. It is a belief of the players once you are an Eagle you are always an Eagle. Whatever dreams you achieved when you were here, you leave behind for others to follow. As we begin the 2011 basketball season, we can still feel the presence of our lone 2010 graduate: Kaitlyn Arick. Katy averaged 13.9 points per game, shooting 47% from the field, 35% from the 3 point line, and 71% from the free throw line. She ended her career with 1,054 points adding her name to our long list of 1,000 point scorers. Although she was a pure shooter, her ability to score will not be the reason she will be missed. She will be missed due to her HEART and HUSTLE. Katy was the type of player who put her body on the floor every game even if she had just returned from an injury. There was never a ball she believed she couldn’t save or get to before an opponent. It didn’t matter if the ball was in the bleachers or flying across the scorer’s table. She was going to follow the ball and get it before any opponent, fan or official touched it.

This ferocious competitor helped her team grab several of the top spots in the overall team statistical categories in the WVIAC: 3rd in scoring offense at 77.9; 2nd in FG% at .465; 1st in FG% defense holding opponents to .376%; 3rd in 3pt FG% at .361; 2nd in 3pt% defense holding opponents to shooting a paltry .283%; 2nd in rebounding margin outrebounding opponents by 5+ rebounds; 3 rd in assists at 18.79; and 2nd in defensive rebounds at 29.17. UC ranked in the top three in 12 of the 21 statistical categories. At the end of her career, Katy had assisted the Golden Eagles with a total of 86 victories, an average of 21.5 wins per year. During this time, the Eagles lost 35 games which is a winning percentage of 71%. In 2008, she was an integral part of the WVIAC Conference Title and the WVIAC Tournament Championship team, winning 26 games and advancing to the second round of the NCAA National Tournament. Katy left behind a legacy both on the court and in the UC record books which will be a goal for others to aspire. We thank her for her leadership, her passion and her heart. She will always be held dearly in our minds.

Coaching Staff

Head Coach Sherry Winn sherrywinn@ucwv.edu

Intensity is the word which best describes Coach Winn. As an athlete, a student, and a coach, she has always displayed concentrated focus. This focus has led her to numerous awards. As a player, she reached the epitome of all athletics—the Olympic Games. In both 1984 and 1988, she was a member of the United States Team Handball Olympic Team. During her collegiate years, she was an Academic All-American with a 4.0 GPA and a two-time Honorable Mention All-American. She still owns 10 school records at the University of Charleston including most points in a season (682), scoring average (22.7), and the most points in a game (44). In 1993, when her team won the NAIA II National Championship, she was voted Coach of the Year in the Frontier Conference and District 12, as well as honored as the NAIA II National Coach of the Year. Last season, Coach Winn surpassed the 400 win mark claiming a total of 407 victories in her career. She began her coaching career at the University of Minnesota—Morris where she took an eight year losing program and turned it into a winning one in just two seasons. At Montana State University—Northern, her teams compiled an overall record of 139 wins and 20 losses, winning the Frontier Conference five times in a row. The move to the University of Southern Colorado proved to be a difficult one. Once again faced with a program which had not won for years, Coach Winn was eager to do battle. Unfortunately, she was crippled physically and emotionally with chronic pain and discovered her teams could not win without her healthy at the helm.

During the eight seasons she has been at the University of Charleston, Coach Winn has created a true sense of team chemistry and positive work ethic claiming an overall record of 180 wins versus only 69 losses. During her first season at the helm of the Eagles, she managed to take a program that was 12th in the WVIAC in 2001 to a 6th place finish in 2002. The Golden Eagles were able to take another big step in 2003 by finishing 14-4 in the conference with an overall 20-10 record. Sporting a 23-8 record in 2004, the Eagles pushed onto the national scene by making a national tournament appearance losing their first tournament game to California, PA, the eventual national champions. In 2005, the Eagles once again rocketed to another winning season, recording 29 wins with only five losses and an East Regional Championship Title. During the Elite Eight, the UC hoopsters lost in the first round to Washburn, the 2005 National Champions. The year of 2006 proved to be the best record ever in UC history with 31 victories, a WVIAC Tournament Championship, and an East Regional Championship. At the Elite Eight, the Eagles were defeated in the first round by the team who won the NCAA II National Title. In 2007, the Eagles survived injuries and illness to complete a 23-8 record and a 2nd place finish in the WVIAC. The 2007-08 season proved to be challenging, finishing with a 17-11 record. The Golden Eagles rebounded in 2008-09 with a record of 26-7 winning the WVIAC Title, claiming the WVIAC Tournament Championship and advancing to the second game in the NCAA Regional Tournament. Coach Winn is an intense coach who likes to push the phrase “positive demanding.” She believes in pushing her players outside their comfort zones, making them reach seemingly untouchable goals, but always doing this is a positive manner. She will be the first person to reward an athlete with a hug, a slap on the back, or words of congratulations. She will also be the first person to constructively criticize techniques and tactics. “I require my athletes over the summer to work on their weakness so that they can become better athletes. Likewise, I require myself to look at the things that I need to improve. While some of the things identified are related to basketball skills, more often they are related to self improvement. Becoming more aware of who I am allows me the opportunity to grow in a more positive direction. As a leader, I have worked harder on leading from the center, the center of myself and the center of the team. I believe that understanding my center enables me to become a better leader and that leading from the center of the team rather than from the top looking down authorizes each player to feel ownership of the program. My goal is to provide an environment that allows those around me to reach their potential.”

7

Rachel begins her second year as assistant coach for the Golden Eagles. Although she is new to the position, she is very familiar with the program. She was a coveted member of the University of Charleston basketball program from 2003 until 2007 when the team amassed an incredible record of 106 wins versus only 24 losses. During her tenure the Golden Eagles did something no other UC team has ever done: achieved back-toback East Regional Championships advancing them to the Elite Eight in both 2005 and 2006. As an athlete, she ended her career scoring 1,241 points, grabbing 711 rebounds, and shooting 53% from the field which placed her in the top five all-time best shooters in UC history. She was named to the WVIAC AllConference Teams in both 2006 and 2007. Coach Pike is the recruiting coordinator responsible for organizing, tracking, emailing, and calling potential recruits. Her additional duties include practice planning, game preparation, and player evaluation. Her expertise as a post player will enhance post defense and offense.

Rachel Pike Associate Head Coach rachelpike@ucwv.edu

She graduated in 2007 from the University of Charleston with a degree in Athletic Administration earning an overall GPA of 3.89. Coach Pike received her MBA from Tiffin University where she continued her basketball education as a graduate assistant from 2007-2009. COACH WINN’S COMMENTS: “Rachel has an intuitive sense for the game. She understands the X’s and O’s of basketball but more than that she simply has a feel for how the game ought to go. When she was a player, I often depended on her during our walk-throughs prior to games to determine exactly how we wanted to defend plays. As a young coach, she has shown absolute brilliance in teaching skills, handling disciplinary issues and being a sounding board for me.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------Coach Derek Dukes enters his ninth season as assistant coach for the Golden Eagles. He played two years at the University of Charleston for Coach Jayson Gee. During his tenure, the Golden Eagles won the 2000-01 WVIAC Conference and Conference Tournament Championship, placed 2nd in the 2001-02 WVIAC Tournament and played in the NCAA National Tournament both years. He departed the program establishing himself as one of UC’s all time block leaders with 93 blocks in only two seasons of play.

Derek Dukes Assistant Coach

Before coming to the University of Charleston, Derek played at Santa Barbara City College and was honored as a first team all-conference pick. Derek graduated with a degree in Computer Information Systems from The University of Charleston last May and is currently working at the Clay Center. Derek was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. He has been married for five years to his college sweetheart, Kristin, and has a spirited three year old, Malia, who keeps him young and on his toes. His coaching duties include directing post play, watching the opponent’s defensive and offensive schemes, communicating his perceptions of practice and game plans to the head coach, and computer scouting technology. COACH WINN’S COMMENTs “Derek’s contributions have increased from year to year. He has become more comfortable in teaching skills as well as sharing coaching insight with the staff. His knowledge about the inside game has helped us increase our post defense and rebounding positioning. He offers positive feedback for the players as well as constructive criticism. His coach-player relationship skills are excellent.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------John will begin his first season with the Golden Eagles. He has spent several years gaining coaching experience including two seasons at Goucher College, a NCAA III institution in Baltimore, MD where he was the recruiting coordinator. He also coached at East Fairmont Sr. High School from 2003-2008 where he assisted the varsity girls’ basketball coach. He graduated from Fairmont State University in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Physical and Health Education. John also earned his Master of Education in Administration and Athletic Leadership from Goucher College. Additionally, he has another 27 graduate hours in Special Education.

John Testa Assistant Coach

John will assist in recruiting duties, scouting, practice and game preparation, and fundraising activities. COACH WINN’S COMMENTS: “I am excited about the addition of Coach Testa. He brings with him not only experience but a belief in teaching the players from an aspect of patience and enthusiasm. His understanding of breaking the game down to minute parts and building it back up will enhance our coaching staff. His integrity and belief in honesty and loyalty will add to our team chemistry.”

She can catch two feet beyond the three point line and release the ball with the same ease she would be doing if she were shooting a lay-up in the paint. While her shot form is perfect; it is her mental strength which has made her one of the best shooters in the nation.”

Daughter of Ron and Tina Beatty, three siblings: Tunisia, Teika, and Ronnie Born June 24th, 1987 Majoring in Sports Administration and Business Administration Favorite Player: Dwayne Wade Plans after UC: Play overseas and open a business

Coach Winn on Tiana: “Quick and athletic, Tiana runs and jumps with the ease of a cheetah. In two steps she can get beyond and opponent on the fast break and in three steps she leaves the entire court of players behind her. Some people might ooh and aah over her athleticism, but as a coach I feel extreme amazement over how far she has come as a player and a person. I am in awe of her growth.”

Coach Winn on Julianne: “A hard worker and a great teammate, Julianne pushes those around her to become better. She is omnipresent in the gym and the weight room and drags teammates to train with her. She is the kind of teammate who will spend time teaching another how to seal in the paint or box out on a rebound even if that player might play in her same position. That is total TEAM commitment.”

Coach Winn on Erika: “Erika has a soft smile and a singing voice which could lead to the conclusion she is a lightweight, but the truth of the matter is she likes to beat and bang. She is unafraid to push others around in the pain and is actually fond of the drill we call Kill which has no rules and allows players to beat the daylights out of one another.”

Coach Winn on Tarenna: “As I look back to Tarenna’s freshman year, I laugh at the difference between whom she was then and who she is now. Today she is a leader, a respected player on the team, a person I can trust, a true student in the classroom and a capable player on the court. I could not have dreamed three years ago of the resilient and accomplished woman she would become, but I now adore who she is.”

Coach Winn on Ali: “I’ve always described Ali’s greatest strength as being intelligent. While I still believe she is an incredibly smart player, she has made herself into an impressive shooter and a stronger athlete with tremendous stamina. There is no greater athlete than the one who has taken the skills she has and multiplied them by three. Ali has done that.”

Now when she steps on the court, she comes with an awareness of how good she really is. She knows she possesses more strength and stamina than opponents and fully utilizes it.”

Coach Winn on Tiffany: “On first appearance, one might be misled to believe Tiffany is a sweet, innocent young lady who would suffer in the physical game of basketball. Appearances, however, are often misleading. Once she changes into her basketball gear, her demeanor shifts and she becomes as mean and ornery as a pit bull.”

2010-2011 Season Preview Expectations are always high for the University of Charleston women's basketball program, and this season is certainly no different. The tradition rich Golden Eagles were predicted to finish a close second in the West Virginia Conference pre-season coaches poll, just one point behind West Liberty and were ranked No. 16 in the Division II Bulletin preseason Top 25. UC returns a senior-laden team with plenty of experience and four seniors returning that averaged double figures in scoring last season. Nine of the top 10 scorers from last year return. The Golden Eagles are led by 5-foot-8 senior guard Lindsey Kentner. The 21-year old from Wapakoneta, Ohio averaged 18 points last year. "We definitely have high expectations for this team," Kentner said. "We've talked about winning the conference regular season title and the tournament. We're even believing we can go to the national tournament, go far, and possibly be national champions." "We know we have so much experience and talent back and that's why we have so much confidence going into the season. We have the players to do it and the capability." UC has a balanced team. Joining the sharp-shooting Kentner is a dominant inside player in forward Tarenna Dixon (12.1 points and 9.2 rebounds per game), speedy and solid rebounding point guard Tiana Beatty (11.0 points and 7.5 boards), and another good shooting guard in Ali Tobias (10.9 points per game).

About the WVIAC Founded in 1924, the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) rates as one of the oldest leagues at the small-college level. The 16-member conference currently boasts the largest membership of any NCAA Division II league. The WVIAC moved into the NCAA Division II ranks in 1994 after a long affiliation with the NAIA. The conference was the only one in Division II to place a team in the national quarterfinals in men’s basketball, football and baseball during the 1998-99 academic year. In 2002 the WVIAC, along with two other conferences, became the first league to earn four bids to the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship. Commissioner Barry Blizzard, who has held the post since 1987, led the move into the NCAA. Blizzard, a native of Bramwell, West Virginia, previously served as the athletics director at Bluefield State. The long-time conference chief has served in a variety of national leadership positions, including a stint as president of the Division II Conference Commissioners Association. Points are awarded based on the school's finish after completion of each of the sports sponsored by the WVIAC. WVIAC champions are determined by the regular season standings in sports that receive NCAA automatic qualification for the tournament winners. Barry Blizzard West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Association Commissioner Commissioner Barry Blizzard has been at the helm of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference since his appointment in November, 1987. Through his very able leadership as the conference's fourth commissioner, the WVIAC continues to enjoy national respectability and competiveness among the 16 member schools and 17 sponsored sports. One of the major accomplishments during Blizzard's tenure as WVIAC Commissioner has been managing the conference's transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II, which occurred in the fall of 1995. He also oversaw the move of the conference headquarters to Princeton in 1987. Prior to NCAA affiliation, Barry held, at various times, a number of NAIA-related national and regional offices. One in particular was a term as president of the NAIA National Athletic Directors Association. Once in the NCAA, Commissioner Blizzard has become involved with its administrative matters and presently serves as the chairman of the Division II Awards Commissoners' Association. He also has served as the regional chair of the selection committee for the Disney Wide World of Sports Basketball Tip-off Tournament. In addition, Blizzard has helped structure a model conference format for Division II league offices. He is a past chair of the NCAA Division II Nominating Committee and currently serves on the Division II Membership Committee. Barry's work in the field of intercollegiate athletics has not gone unnoticed by peers. He has received a number of awards including the NAIA's National Award of Merit for work as president of the Athletic Directors Association and the seventh annual Mike McLaughlin Memorial Administrative Award which is the WVIAC award recognizing persons who have made outstanding contributions to the conference for a period of years. Additionally, a report he authored, NAIA Eligibility Rules, Time for a Change, was published in the spring 1986 edition of The Athletic Administrator, a publication of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Blizzard's background in intercollegiate sports and sports management has served him well to deal with the tasks of overseeing this league. Before taking on his present position, he was the athletic director and sports information director at Bluefield State College, for 11 years beginning in 1976. A two-year period as assistant athletic director and SID, preceded this. The Commissioner is a native of Bramwell, WV, and received his undergraduate degree at Bluefield State College. He earned a Masters in American History at Radford (VA) University. Barry lives in Princeton. He and his late wife, Vicki, have two married daughters. Amie Bolton is a resident of Pearisburg, Virginia, while younger daughter Emilie Whittaker resides in Princeton.
