In its first 125 years, the University of Charleston has grown from a small seminary college to a nationally-recognized university comprised of four locations. UC was founded by the Southern Methodist denomination in 1888 as Barboursville Seminary in Barboursville, W.Va., and became a college in 1889. In 1901, it was renamed Morris Harvey College in honor of a prominent donor. During the Great Depression, the college moved to Charleston to take advantage of the larger metropolitan area. As a result of the merger between the Methodist church North and South, the college disaffiliated from the denomination and Morris Harvey College became independent in 1942. From 1935 to 1947, the college was located in downtown Charleston, holding classes in several separate buildings. During these years, the college grew steadily, in part because of a merger with Kanawha Junior College and an affiliation with the Mason College of Fine Arts and Music. Recognizing the need for a unified campus, in 1947 construction of the present facilities began on the south bank of the Kanawha River. The Board of Trustees changed the name from Morris Harvey College to the University of Charleston on December 13, 1978. On August 1, 2012 the University announced it entered into an agreement to establish new locations in Beckley and Martinsburg, W.Va., to replace Mountain State University, which was slated to go out of business in a few months. By January 1, 2013 UC-Beckley, UC-Martinsburg and UC-Online joined UC-Charleston as part of the University of Charleston. In a matter of four months, UC grew to 32 academic programs, over 360 employees and approximately 2,000 students. The University serves the community as a focal point for numerous intellectual, scientific, cultural, athletic, and civic events. These interactions between the University and the community are vital to the achievement of the University's mission. Dr. Edwin H. Welch has served as president of the University of Charleston since 1989. He has led the institution through a period of unprecedented change – doubling full-time enrollment, tripling the endowment, transforming the academic program to focus on student outcomes, becoming a proponent for student assessment, clarifying the institution’s mission, constructing seven of the eleven buildings on campus, and adding pharmacy and business graduate schools. Dr. Welch also created a central administrative computing corporation which serves seven colleges and universities. His board service includes chairing the Quality Committee for Charleston Area Medical Center Health Systems, the Advisory Board of BB&T-West Virginia, the national Foundation for Independent Higher Education board, the President’s Council for the Association of Governing Boards, and having served as chair of the Appalachian College Association for three years. In 2006, Dr. Welch received the first-ever Charles L. Foreman Award for innovation in private higher education from the Foundation for Independent Higher Education. In 2007, he was the proud recipient of the 2007 YMCA Spirit of the Valley Award in recognition of his exemplary community service, and his selfless concern and care for the greater Charleston 7 community.

UNIVERSITY OF CHARLESTON ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT UC competes in 15 Division II sports. Teams and individuals at the University of Charleston have had notable successes in athletics, winning state championships, and advancing to national tournaments in softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s soccer, baseball, and golf. UC's athletic teams, known as the Golden Eagles, compete in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) in NCAA Division II. In June 2012, UC was one of nine members of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) that announced their plans to leave to form a new Division II conference. Two months later, the new conference was unveiled as the MEC, with UC as one of 12 charter members. University teams enjoy the best athletic facilities available, on and off campus. In 2005, UC entered into a partnership with the local school board to refurbish the school board–owned Laidley Field, which was renamed University of Charleston Stadium. The campus also boasts new or renovated softball, football, baseball, and soccer fields, and are working towards the goal of building new basketball facilities

UC Beckley Athletics On March 2013, the school announced that the Beckley campus would begin fielding its own sports teams. Colors, nicknames, and conference affiliation are not yet determined. Play is hoped to begin by September 2013.

FACILITY INFORMATION Built in 1948, the Eddie King Gymnasium has been a part of the University of Charleston for over 60 years. It is the home to the men’s and women’s basketball teams and the women’s volleyball team. Current plans are underway to construct a new Sports and Fitness Center to become the new home for University of Charleston athletics.

People agree, UC has changed drastically in a short period of time. However, there is still work to be done. The next project to take priority in The Vision: UC campaign is the construction of a Sports & Fitness Center on the UC campus. The center will be home to the men’s and women’s basketball teams and the women’s volleyball team. It will also serve as a multi-purpose facility for the use of 12 other varsity athletic teams and the entire student body. The Sports & Fitness Center will be constructed in two phases. In phase one, the current Eddie King Gym will be torn down and a new performance arena constructed. The arena will feature an open, social environment equipped with stadium-style seating, new concessions for entertaining, and a walking track. Phase two will consist of renovating the aquatic and auxiliary gymnasium areas, constructing racquetball courts and a climbing wall, and incorporating the new structure into the existing fitness center. 15

THE MOUNTAIN EAST CONFERENCE The Mountain East Conference (MEC) is a collegiate athletic conference that competes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II level and officially began competition on September 1, 2013. It consists of 12 schools, mostly in West Virginia with other charter members in Ohio and Virginia. The conference is an offshoot of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC), another Division II conference that had operated primarily in West Virginia since 1924. In June 2012, the nine football-playing schools in that conference announced plans to break away and form a new all-sports conference. According to regional media, the split was supposedly rooted in different philosophies of progressivism, and also was partially driven by a desire to expand the new conference's footprint outside West Virginia. The divisions in the WVIAC were also rooted in the split between public and private schools, although the departing schools included institutions of both types. On February 15, 2013, the NCAA accepted the MEC as its 25th D2 conference. MEC teams will not be eligible for automatic bids to NCAA Division II championships until the 2015â&#x20AC;&#x201C;16 school year, but remain eligible for at-large bids.. 16

MEC COMMISSIONER REID AMOS Reid Amos was appointed as the first Commissioner of the Mountain East Conference by a unanimous vote of the MEC Board of Directors in November 2012. Amos brings extensive experience in administration and athletics, to go with a sincere passion for the NCAA Division II experience, to his new position. Prior to his role as commissioner, Amos was the Vice President of Broadcasting at West Liberty University. He was promoted to that role following a successful stint as the Executive Director for the WLU Office of Communications. During his time at West Liberty, Amos’s work was instrumental in the growth of West Liberty University Television (WLTV-14), which today reaches more than 100,000 cable homes in West Virginia and Ohio. Known throughout the Upper Ohio Valley as the “Voice of the Hilltoppers,” he served as play-by-play announcer for approximately 50 televised football and basketball games each year at West Liberty. Amos served as executive producer and play-by-play man on several WLTV telecasts that have aired on ROOT Sports, the regional cable sports network in Pittsburgh that reaches 2.5 million cable homes. He achieved a major coup when he successfully negotiated and coordinated the first-ever live telecast of the 2012 WVIAC Tournament’s men’s basketball championship game on ROOT Sports. In addition to his experience as a member of the West Liberty University’s senior staff and broadcaster at West Liberty, Amos also has the benefit of being a successful collegiate coach and NCAA administrator. Along with his work in broadcasting and athletics, Amos also brings extensive communications and marketing experience to the table. Since 2003, he has been the owner/operator of Intermedia Solutions, LLC, a multimedia consulting company working with many of the institutions he now serves in the MEC. 17

Head Coach Adam Collins The Golden Eagles welcomed Adam Collins as the new head coach of the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s basketball program last season. After graduating from Charleston Southern, Collins had been rebuilding the program at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in Odessa, Tx. The Falcons were happy to have him as he began his work in Odessa in 2008. From there, he changed their previous record from 2-50 to a 21-8 finish in the 2010-11 season thus making them fiercely competitive in the aggressive Heartland Conference. After an NCAA Tournament appearance and the Heartland Conference Coach of the Year accolade, Collins planned to electrify the Eddie King Gym the 201213 season for the Golden Eagles. As Collins takes over the position of legendary coach Sherry Winn (237-100), he plans to bring a different style to the conference that is similar to that of top competitor Glenville State. "We'll have an up and down style, but we'll substitute every two or three minutes, not every 40 seconds," Collins said. "Two years ago we (UTPB) were second in the nation in scoring and the only team ahead of us was Glenville." Coach Collins began his career at his alma mater, Charleston Southern where he was a graduate assistant. From there, he has coached men's and women's basketball at Charleston Southern (1998-99), Independence CC (1999-2000), Howard (200-01), Indiana (Pa.) (2001-03), Mercyhurst Northeast (2003-05), Henderson State (2005-06), and UNC-Wilmington (2006-08).

2013 -2014 Season Outlook In a vote conducted by the leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s coaches, the University of Charleston Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Basketball team was predicted to be ranked fourth in Mountain East Conference following West Liberty (1st), Glenville State and Fairmont State. The team has had a great start, opening the season in the MEC/CIAA Classic hosted by West Virginia State University. UC began the classic by defeating Johnson C. Smith University 76-57. UC was led by LeAnne Ross, who scored a career high 23 points. DJ Reddix and Chyress Lockhart also played significant roles on the team scoring 11 and 13 points respectively. KJ Johnson debuted in this game with 10 rebounds for the team. In the second game of the MEC/CIAA Classic, UC defeated Chowan University 71-61. In this game, Chyress Lockhart scored 16 points, giving eight assists and grabbing seven rebounds. Nichole Perry also played well, scoring 14 points and having a career high 8 rebounds. Finally, Tianni Kelly pulled down 12 rebounds and scored 9 points. 32

TEAM HISTORY The University of Charleston’s Women’s Basketball records date back to 1920 when the team was formed. The 1920 founding team was coached by Vogelbach and included Alice Tague, Vennie Copley, Ruth Sanford, Ada Riggleman, Columbia Stowasser, Agnes Hayman, Bertha Forbes, Rita White, Irene Adkins, Vivian Blake, Louise Frazier and Gladyz Perkins. Over the years several players have been inducted into the hall of fame including Alvena Allen-Elliot, Lynn Bria, Barbara Carte, Anna Coratello, Bud Francis, Sue Goldcam, Stephanie Hall, Kim Hess, Robin Machin, Karen “Pineapple” Mays, Connie Clark Muldoon, Annette Olenchick Dr. Lester Raines, Beth Ann Rist, Cathy Burk Widdecombe and Sherry Winn. Hall of famers Anna Coratello and Barbar Carte played for the Golden Eagles and continued on to try out for the 1976 Olympic team. In the past, UC’s women’s basketball team has competed with and defeated teams including Marshall University, West Virginia University, Virginia Tech and the University of Kentucky. Season in Review 2011-2012 Head Coach: Sherry Winn Overall Record: 13-15 Conference Record: 11-11 Non-Conference Record: 2-4 10th place in WVIAC In the opening round of the WVIAC Tournament, UC upset University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown 56-51. Lauren Davis led the way for UC offensively with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Kayla Dozier managed to score 10 points. This took UC to the second round of the tournament against No.2 seeded Concord University, where they ended their season losing 48-70. 75

Season in Review 2012 - 2013 Head Coach: Adam Collins Overall Record: 16-13 Conference Record: 11-11 Non-Conference Record: 5-2 9th place in WVIAC In the opening round of the WVIAC Tournament, UC upset the higher-seeded University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, In this game, Kali Cuttaia scored 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while Jessi Cowden contributed 14 points. UC moved on to play #1 seeded Glenville State College, defeating them 65-57. UC was led in scoring by Nichole Perry (18) and Chrissy Keir (14). UC continued on to the semifinals against Seton Hill University, where they were defeated 49-61. 79
