University of Charleston History
The University of Charleston was founded by the Southern Methodist denomination in 1888 as Barboursville Seminary in Barboursville, West Virginia, and became a college in 1889. In 1901, it was renamed Morris Harvey College in honor of a prominent donor. During the Great Depression, the college moved to Charleston to take advantage of the larger metropolitan area. As a result of the merger between the Methodist church North and South, the college disaffiliated from the denomination and Morris Harvey College became independent in 1942. From 1935 to 1947, the college was located in downtown Charleston, holding classes in several separate buildings. During these years, the college grew steadily, in part because of a merger with Kanawha Junior College and an affiliation with the Mason College of Fine Arts and Music. Recognizing the need for a unified campus, in 1947 construction of the present facilities began on the south bank of the Kanawha River. The Board of Trustees changed the name from Morris Harvey College to the University of Charleston on December 13, 1978. Today, the University still benefits from its location in the dynamic capital city and from the beauty of West Virginia's hills. Proximity to the seat of government, to the state's largest medical, commercial, and financial centers and to major research and manufacturing facilities provides excellent opportunities for experiential learning. The University serves the community as a focal point for numerous intellectual, scientific, cultural, athletic and civic events. These interactions between the University and the community are vital to the achievement of the University's mission.

Welch is a native of Maryland and earned degrees from Western Maryland College, Boston University School of Theology, and Boston University Graduate School. He studied International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science and Higher Education Administration at the Harvard Institute for Educational Management. His Ph.D. is in Social Ethics and he is an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church. Personal Information: Dr. Welch has served as President of the University of Charleston since 1989. He has led the institution through a period of unprecedented change – doubling full-time student enrollment, tripling the endowment, transforming its academic program to focus on student outcomes, becoming a national leader in student assessment, clarifying the institution’s mission, constructing 6 of the 10 buildings on campus and adding a graduate school of pharmacy and a graduate school of business. Other Information: Dr. Welch served in the Executive Office of the President at The White House from 1961 until 1971 during the administrations of Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon. He began his teaching and administrative career at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Dr. Welch was a department chair and Assistant Dean at Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania, the Academic Vice President at Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and for eight years he served as the Provost at Wartburg College in Iowa

Tom Nozica has been the Athletic Director at the University of Charleston for over ten years. He is only the fifth Athletic Director since the University was renamed. Coach Nozica is a member of the University of Charleston Hall of Fame, as a member of the induction class of 1990. Coach Nozica is also the Head Baseball Coach at UC and has also held the position of Head Men’s Soccer Coach. Under Coach Nozica’s leadership, the University of Charleston Athletic Department has reached new heights during his tenure. The individual athletic teams have experiences unprecedented successes during Nozica’s tenure. The 1999 Men’s Soccer team reached the NCAA Final Four, becoming the first UC team to achieve such success and the 2005 and 2006 UC Women’s Basketball team reached the NCAA Elite Eight. Under Coach Nozica, the University of Charleston resurrected its football program in 2003. Since the resurrection, the University of Charleston has purchased Charleston’s Laidley Field and renamed it University of Charleston Stadium. In 2005 a $1.4 million renovation was completed at University of Charleston Stadium, including the installation of a new field turf, construction of brand new locker rooms, and the renovation of an upgraded press box. Other athletic facilities have also seen extreme upgrades under Coach Nozica’s tenure as Athletic Director. In 2008 the construction of the University of Charleston Softball Field was completed. Triana Field underwent a $1.5 million renovation of its facilities under Coach Nozica. Currently, the University and the Athletic Department are raising money and completing plans to renovate Eddie King Gymnasium. The plans will include major upgrades to the Basketball/Volleyball arena, several locker rooms, Athletic Training facilities, and offices for coaches and staff.

Name: Rachel Stone Grade: Sophomore Hometown: Parkersburg, West Virginia Major: Pre-Pharmacy Sport: Track & Field Events: discus, javelin, hammer, weight, shotput. First season at UC: The first season Rachel was getting the hang of college competition. She had a blast though and plan on moving up in the rankings this season. Why UC: The reason she came to UC was because she threw throughout high school and wanted to continue. Also, UC had an advanced pharmacy program that would get her through school faster while still delivering a good education. Future goals: Rachel’s future goals are to improve in all events these next few seasons and to eventually become a pharmacist in the area.

In track Jessica was 3th in the conference in the 800m, also her freshman year. Why UC: Jessica liked that it was close to home and she thought that the people here were very nice. Future goals: Jessica hopes to complete her Cross Country season successfully and begin Track in the spring. She hopes to graduate in May and get a teaching job soon after.
Name: MyNiqua Cotton Grade: Sophomore Hometown: Bear, Delaware Major: Political Science & Psychology Sport-Track & Field Events: 200, 400, 800, 4x400, 4x800 First season at UC: MyNiqua was just getting the hang of college competition. Why UC: MyNiqua came to UC because she really enjoyed her stay when she came for her overnight visit. She also came to run track. The coaches here wanted to get the program on the move and needed some talented runners to lead the way. It was an honor when they asked her to join the team. Future Goals: MyNiqua plans on working with the government in some type of way. She wants to be a lawyer and a college psychology professor. She also plans on competing in the Olympic try-outs in the year of 2012 or 2016.

Name: Laura Green Hometown: Belpre, Ohio Grade: Sophomore Major: Radiologic Science Sport: Track Events: 100, 200, and 400 First season at UC: Last season Laura qualified for conference in 100, 4x100 and 4x400 Why UC: One of the reason for her coming to UC is because they have a 4 year Bachelor’s degree in Radiologic Science Future goals: To succeed in upcoming year and beat her personal record. She also hopes to stay healthy thru out the entire season
Name: Nneji Akunne Hometown: Columbus, Ohio Grade: Junior Major: Biology specializing in the pre-pharmacy program Sport: Track & Field Events: 200m, 400m, 4x100m, 4x400m, and triple jump. First season at UC: Although, Nneji was not a standout she was grateful to make it to the WVIAC Conference Championships. Second season at UC: In her sophomore year, she was elected captain of the women's track team and felt like that was a great accomplishment. Nneji finished 7th in the 400m, the 4x100m relay team finished 4th, the 4x400m relay team finished 6th and she finished 6th overall in the triple jump. Why UC: Pre-Pharmacy Program Future goals: The team finished 5th overall in the WVIAC last year and Nneji looks to progress and do better this year than last year.

Name: Jessica Leasure DOB: 9/19/1988 Hometown: Parkesburg, WV Grade: Junior Major: Nursing Sport: Track & Field Events: Indoor-Weight and Shot Put & OutdoorDisc, Hammer and Shot Put First season at UC: Jessica competed at Duke Meet and qualified for the WVIAC meet. Her PR’s were- disc 32.93m and shot put 10.39. Second season at UC: Jessica was throwing in the Virginia Tech indoor meets and her PR’s for the season were-weight 11.91m, hammer 38.95m, and disk 34.21m. Why UC: Jessica loved the campus and staying over the night on her visitation trip. She also came because of the nursing program an UC. Future goals: To set new PRs with every meet, graduate from UC, and get a job in open heart recovery

Why UC: The reason why she came to UC is because of their great track and Pre-Pharmacy program Future goals: Samantha’s main goal is to improve her PS’s in all her events as well as to start college well

She won states her freshman year, and she also was in ALL-City Track 2009 for 100, 200 and 4x100 relay. Why UC: The main reason why Meccan came to UC is their track & field and accounting program Future goals: Meccan main goal is to fit in her new team well and improve her PS’s.

Future goals: Being a first year at UC her plans are to lower her personal times, compete well, and stay on the top of her games. They also had a very good program for Athletic Training Future goals: Lynnse future goals are to become an Athletic Trainer for the Pittsburgh Steelers and to run the fastest she ever has in all her events

West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
General info: Founded in 1924, the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) rates as one of the oldest leagues at the small-college level. The 16-member conference currently boasts the largest membership of any NCAA Division II league. The current membership includes Alderson- Broaddus College, Bluefield State College, University of Charleston, Concord University, Davis & Elkins College, Fairmont State University, Glenville State College, Ohio Valley University, Salem International University, Shepherd University, West Liberty State College, West Virginia State University, West Virginia Wesleyan College and Wheeling Jesuit University. The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and Seton Hill University joined the WVIAC for the 2006-07 season. Pitt Johnstown and Seton Hill are the WVIAC’s first out-of-state members since 1932. The WVIAC moved into the NCAA Division II ranks in 1994 after a long affiliation with the NAIA. The conference was the only one in Division II to place a team in the national quarterfinals in men’s basketball, football and baseball during the 1998-99 academic year. In 2002 the WVIAC, along with two other conferences, became the first league to earn four bids to the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship. Women’s sports were incorporated into the WVIAC during the 1981-82 academic year as the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Association was absorbed. Currently, women’s championships are offered in softball, golf, tennis, track, basketball, volleyball, cross country and soccer. Men’s championships are conducted in football, cross country, soccer, basketball, baseball, golf, tennis and track.
Commissioner’s Cup The West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has named the victors of the Presidents' and Commissioner's Cups for the 2008-09 athletic season. The trophies honor all-around athletic excellence among its member schools. West Virginia Wesleyan grabs both titles for the second consecutive season. Wesleyan won league championships in women's cross country, men's cross country, women's soccer, women's track and field, men's track and field, men's tennis, and softball. Commissioner Biographies
Commissioner Barry Blizzard has been at the helm of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference since his appointment in November, 1987. Through his very able leadership as the conference's fourth commissioner, the WVIAC continues to enjoy national respectability and competiveness among the 16 member schools and 17 sponsored sports. One of the major accomplishments during Blizzard's tenure as WVIAC Commissioner has been managing the conference's transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II, which occurred in the fall of 1995. He also oversaw the move of the conference headquarters to Princeton in 1987. Prior to NCAA affiliation, Barry held, at various times, a number of NAIA-related national and regional offices. One in particular was a term as president of the NAIA National Athletic Directors Association. Once in the NCAA, Commissioner Blizzard has become involved with its administrative matters and presently serves as the chairman of the Division II Awards Commissioners'' Association. He also has served as the regional chair of the selection committee for the Disney Wide World of Sports Basketball Tip-off Tournament. In addition, Blizzard has helped structure a model conference format for Division II league offices. He currently is the chair of the NCAA Division II Nominating Committee. Barry's work in the field of intercollegiate athletics has not gone unnoticed by peers. He has received a number of awards including the NAIA's National Award of Merit for work as president of the Athletic Directors Association and the seventh annual Mike McLaughlin Memorial Administrative Award which is the WVIAC award recognizing persons who have made outstanding contributions to the conference for a period of years. Additionally, a report he authored, NAIA Eligibility Rules, Time for a Change, was published in the spring 1986 edition of The Athletic Administrator, a publication of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Blizzard's background in intercollegiate sports and sports management has served him well to deal with the tasks of overseeing this league. Before taking on his present position, he was the athletic director and sports information director at Bluefield State College, for 11 years beginning in 1976. A two-year period as assistant athletic director and SID, preceded this. The Commissioner is a native of Bramwell, WV, and received his undergraduate degree at Bluefield State College. He earned a Masters in American History at Radford (VA) University. Barry lives in Princeton with his wife Vicki. They have two daughters. Amie Bolton is a resident of Pearisburg, Virginia, while younger daughter Emilie resides in Princeton.
Stephanie Prewitt-Assistant Commissioner/Senior Woman Administrator Stephanie Prewitt joined the WVIAC staff in January 2007 as the league's Assistant Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Senior Woman Administrator. The 1998 Appalachian State University graduate received her degree in physical education and was named ASU's Health, Leisure, and Exercise Science major of the year. She previously served on the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission's staff as an Educational Talent Search Counselor. The Louisburg, North Carolina native also has been part of the volleyball coaching staffs at Watauga (NC) High School and Bluefield Middle School. Stephanie was an all-conference standout in volleyball and softball as a prep athlete at Louisburg High School. She participated in three North Carolina Class AA volleyball final fours, including a pair of state championship matches. She has assisted with the NCAA Division II men's golf, softball, and women's lacrosse national championships. In addition, Stephanie is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators and is a graduate of the 2008 NACWAA/HERS Institute. Stephanie resides in Kegley with her husband, Will, and their dogs: Bailey, Bentley, Hershey, Junebug and Emmie.

Associate Commissioner-Will Prewitt
Will Prewitt assumed the newly created role of WVIAC Associate Commissioner on July 1, 1999. The Williamsburg, Kentucky native joined the WVIAC staff after stints at Tusculum College and Appalachian State University. He deals primarily with championships, sport administration, and media relations at the league's Princeton office. The 1994 graduate of the University of Mississippi is a member of the NCAA Division II Championships Committee and participates as the liaison for the sports of football and men's golf. He previously served terms on the Division II Men's Golf Committee, the Division II Great Lakes Region Softball Advisory Committee and the Division II Northeast Region Football Advisory Committee. In addition, Prewitt was also selected to be a part of the NCAA Division II Regionalization Advisory Board in the spring of 2007. Prewitt played a key role in bringing the 2006 NCAA D-II Men's Golf Championship to West Virginia and was the tournament's co-director. He has also been a part of the tournament staffs of over 30 national championships, including the Division II Softball, Division III Football, and Division III Men's Basketball events. Prewitt served as sports information director at Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn. from March, 1998 until arriving at the WVIAC. He was the primary media contact for the Pioneers' 14 varsity sports as the school moved to the NCAA Division II level and the South Atlantic Conference. He previously worked with the baseball and basketball programs at NCAA Division I Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. Prewitt was the sports information contact for the Mountaineer baseball program in 1996 and 1997. He also was in charge of statistical operations for home football and basketball contests, as well as traveling with the ASU men's basketball team to handle road media relations. Will and his wife, Stephanie, reside in Kegley with their dogs: Bailey, Bentley, Junebug, Emmie, and Hershey.
Ben Brownlee-NCAA Compliance Coordinator Ben Brownlee joined the WVIAC in July, 2007 as the league's first NCAA compliance coordinator. The 2006 Bethany College graduate previously served a one-year stint as an intern for the Presidents' Athletic Conference. The Moundsville, WV native will work with the 16-member league's institutions in NCAA compliance related duties and help manage internal operations for the WVIAC. He assisted in all aspects of conference operations at the PAC. Brownlee also was a four-year letterman for Bethany's swim team. The John Marshall HS graduate served two years as the secretary of the Bethany and PAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committees. During college, Brownlee interned with the public relations and marketing department of the Ohio Valley Medical Center and with the Ohio Valley chapter of the American Red Cross. In addition, he gained over-the-air experience as the program director for Bethany's campus radio station (WVBC-FM) and as a part-time employee for Clear Channel Radio in Wheeling and KeyMarket Communication in Bellaire, Ohio. Brownlee is a member of the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Committee, along with the NCAA Green Team. He also serves as the varsity swim coach at PikeView High School.
