Russell E. Berlin, Jr. Russell Berlin returns for his seventh season as Music Director of the Lee’s Summit Symphony. Russ presently serves as the music director and conductor of the Academy Orchestra of the Youth Symphony of Kansas City. Previously he spent thirty years teaching instrumental music in the Lee’s Summit school district and is credited with building a national reputation for the Lee’s Summit Orchestral Program. He is the recipient of many awards recognizing his musical, educational and civic accomplishments. He received his BME from Kansas State University and his MME from Kansas University. Russ also has completed advanced orchestral training at the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Bryan Busby Coming to KMBC 9 NEWS in 1985, Chief Meteorologist Bryan Busby quickly established himself as Kansas City’s leading meteorologist. In addition, Bryan serves as Chief Meteorologist for Carter Broadcasting, providing weather reports on radio station KPRS, Hot 103 Jamz. He put KMBC-TV on the “weather map” with innovative programs like “Guaranteed Weather,” “EarthStation,” “Weather-ToGo,” “Bryan Goes to School,” and “Instant Weather Network,” a weather display system which earned him a U.S. Patent. Bryan holds a degree in meteorology from St. Louis University. Bryan is also the principal timpanist for the Civic Orchestra of Kansas City performing five or six times a year. Professionally, he served as the solo timpanist with the Independence Messiah Festival Orchestra playing in that group’s annual performance of the Messiah at the Community of Christ Auditorium from 1992 until the orchestra’s last year, 2005. He’s performed with the Kansas City Symphony, the Kansas City Percussion Quartet, and even performed with the Moody Blues (at Verizon Amphitheater). He has also been a private timpani instructor to many of the area’s best student musicians. In addition to performing and teaching, Bryan is the Principal Guest Conductor of the Kansas City Youth Symphony, having conducted that group in Yardley Hall at Johnson County Community College, Kemper Arena, the United States Pavilion at the 1992 World’s Fair in Seville, Spain, and most recently in Carnegie Hall in New York City. Besides his Youth Symphony activities, Bryan and has appeared as guest conductor at area symphonies, community orchestras, bands and high schools. In addition to his musical abilities, Bryan is a terrific imitator of cartoon voices and is the voice of his own cartoon character Georgie Global, a feature that has appeared on the Web, television and in newspapers across the country. Bryan provides all of the voices during his annual radio Santa tracking (all except Santa of course), and he recently provided the voices for the pig, horse and bull on the American Royal television commercials. The Lee’s Summit Symphony is pleased to welcome Bryan to the 2010 Family Concert!
Marvin Gruenbaum Marvin Gruenbaum is a charter member of the Kansas City Symphony viola section, having served continuously in that capacity since the orchestra’s inception in 1982. He is also an eclectic string player, having gained notoriety as a Bluegrass fiddler and a Jazz violinist. Additionally, he has taught violin, viola and alternative fiddle styles privately for the past 30 years, and served as a clinician for fiddle workshops, violin and viola master classes, and jazz camps. Marvinʼs violin studies began in elementary school and led to an interest in improvisation during high school. After high school, he studied Cultural Anthropology and Asian Philosophy at Washington University in St. Louis while playing violin in the Washington U. Orchestra under the direction of Leonard Slatkin. During these years, Marvin was introduced to Bluegrass and Mountain music and developed an interest in the Jazz violin styles of Jean-Luc Ponty and Stephane Grapelli. In 1974 Marvin decided to pursue his musical interests more fully and transferred to the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. He received his B.A. in Music (Violin Emphasis) in 1978 and a M.M. in Viola Performance in 1981. During this time Marvin continued to hone his improvisational skills and added Indian Raga styles to his repertoire. Marvin accepted a position as a violist with the Kansas City Symphony in 1982 and has been featured as a “fiddle” soloist with the KCS on Jazz and Country/Western arrangements, most notably on his own arrangement of Ervin Rouseʼs “Orange Blossom Special.” Concurrently with his KCS tenure, Marvin played “hot” fiddle at Bluegrass festivals from 1986 to 2007 with the Bluegrass group, Spontaneous Combustion. The acoustic 4-piece band produced four CDs, focusing primarily on Top 40 “Oldies” played in Bluegrass style and on jazzy original “New Acoustic” arrangements in the style of David Grisman. Marvin is currently producing a live, narrated, concert tribute to the many icons of the Kansas City Jazz era entitled, “Goinʼ to Kansas City - A Live Jazz Tribute.” The presentation features his new versatile jazz sextet, Station Street Jazz Ensemble. The Lee’s Summit Symphony is pleased to have the opportunity to perform with Marvin this evening!

Thank you for your support of the Lee’s Summit Symphony! Family Concert 2010 The following reminders are presented in order to ensure an enjoyable experience for all of our patrons and to show respect for the hard work and dedication of our musicians. For the enjoyment of all, please ensure cell phones and pagers are turned off prior to the start of the performance. The taking of photographs and audio or visual recordings is prohibited. We hope that tonight’s performance moves you to want to share your thoughts and observations with those sitting near you. However, talking and whispering during the performance may disturb those seated around you. Please wait to share your thoughts until intermission or the end of the performance. If you must exit the auditorium during the performance, please make sure the doors at the back of the auditorium close quietly. Please do the same when you return to the auditorium, and return to your seat when the orchestra is between selections. Musicians love applause! Please feel free to show your appreciation for their performance at the end of the piece. Pieces with multiple movements are often crafted to carry a mood or feeling from one movement to the next and it is best to hold your applause until the end of the entire piece. The movements for a multimovement piece are printed in the program. Most importantly, enjoy the concert! The musicians dedicate many hours of their time to rehearsals and independent practice. Their desire is that you, too, would experience the love of music that motivated them to devote their time and talents to this performance, and that you would tell your friends about the great things happening in the Lee’s Summit Symphony!

In 2003, THCF-Lee’s Summit was formed to encourage charitable giving among Lee’s Summit donors so more dollars could be granted to nonprofits serving the Lee’s Summit community. In the last five years, THCF-Lee’s Summit has engaged nearly 50 donors to grant more than $5.5 million to charitable programs in Lee’s Summit! For a quarter of a century, Truman Heartland Community Foundation (THCF) has brought together heartland donors to improve area communities by promoting and serving private giving for the public good. Today, the Community Foundation is a family of more than 550 charitable funds, created by individual donors and their families, corporations, and nonprofits who desire to make improvements in the lives of their neighbors through charitable giving. If you would like to learn how you can support charitable programs in the Lee’s Summit community by creating your own charitable fund, please contact Nicole Stevens, Director of Marketing & Communications, at (816)795-5307 or stevens@thcf.org.
