Introduction Since 1973 when Breidenstine Hall was built, it has been lost amidst all the other university buildings. Breidenstine Hall, the art & design department building of Millersville Univeristy was in need of an identity. Finally, in 2010 the challenge of branding the art & design building was proposed. This involved identity system, building signage, and promotional material. The goal was to create an identity that would reflect the unique character of the program within the university system. detail: Entry way of Breidenstine Hall
ITEM #1
Brainstorming First things first, going back and forth with faculty to figure out what type of logo the department was looking for. It needed to be something that reflected the department as a whole and still kept the university logo in mind so the two could work together.

ITEM #2 Make Lists
Before even breaking out the sketchpad, I start with lists for the day, for the project, and so on. By the end, they generally become crossed off scribbles, but without them, I would never reach the finished product. In the case of the Millersville Art & Design logo, I had to be sure I was keeping in contact with faculty, making notes of ideas to run by them, and listing off everything I needed for the project.

ITEM #3 Sketching
Post listmaking, the process of creating anything begins in front of a sketchpad. This project in particular involved plenty of to-do lists, sketches of the building, and logo ideation.

Finally, after sketching, listing, and going over ideas, it was onto the computer. Featured to the left are just some of the logos and layouts tested out before the final one was decided on.
ITEM #5 Pick A Color
Early on in the logo creation process, colors were discussed. As part of the branding process, we hoped to give the art & design building a color scheme of it’s own. We chose a shade of teal present throughout the exterior of the building. The “Art Fence”, created by Keith Brommer in 2005 is this shade of teal and both the door and trashcan at the entry way follow suit. As a recognizable aspect of the department, it was the perfect choice for logo color.

ITEM #6
The Final Logo After going back and forth on typefaces, the winners were trade gothic and stag thin dot. Using bold trade gothic for the art/design portion of the logo makes it stand out from the rest making the department the focus. The “mu is more subtle with the dot type from Stag and the ampersand adds interest. The logo also holds true to the university’s logo by repeating it at the bottom.

ITEM #7
Define the Department When the building signage was created, it was decided that there should be other words to accompany the signs
inspiration . passion . creativity . innovation These four words express the ideals of Millersville University and more importantly the Art & Design Department.

ITEM #8
Signage Process After the creation of the logo, we moved onto bigger things. In order to create building signage, we worked with a local company, Signarama. The signs were installed in March of 2011.

ITEM #9
Final Building Signage When the signs were finished, the building went from being another nameless building on campus to being distinguishable from all the others. Art & Design students could now point out the building by the signs rather than describing it as “the square one next to the science building

ITEM #10 Letterhead etc.
The final promotion of the logo and department was through letterhead. I created letterhead, envelopes, and a business card. The business card in particular was used for the portfolio class to promote our blog as well as art & design website. The logo was also used for promotion of the student gallery store in downtown Lancaster.
The End This project was a wonderful experience and allowed me to contribute something lasting to the university that has been home to me for the last four years. The signage will be on the building for the coming years and will serve as a key element of the art & design department for the years to come. The photographs included are all distinct aspects of Breidenstine Hall and were just one element taken into consideration when creating a new identity for the department.
