HISTORY AND CULTURE

the Talyllyn Railway which is the world’s first preserved steam railway originally opened in 1865. Take the most scenic journey inland passing waterfalls and woodlands to Nant Gwernol, the starting point for picturesque walks of the area. From here travel to the small and family friendly Welsh Highland Railway (Porthmadog) where some of the vintage coaches also date back over 100 years and there’s the chance to have a free guided tour of the engine sheds. Three quarters of an hour’s drive away at the foot of the mighty Snowdon the Llanberis Lake Railway offers unrivalled views of mountains. As with many of Wales’ narrow gauge railways it was originally built to carry slate but now the trains take visitors on a journey along the shore of the lake. Opened in 1896 Snowdon Mountain Railway is one of Wales’ early man-made visitor attractions built to carry tourists to the summit and is the only cog railway in Great Britain. Summer 2008 will see the opening of the new £9million Summit Visitor Centre, Hafod Eryri.

INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE AND THE STORY OF SLATE

MYTHS AND LEGENDS

Trefriw Woollen Mills is steeped in tradition having been run by the same family for over 140 years. The manufacturing process starts with the raw wool, which is blended, carded, spun, doubled, dyed warped and woven on the premises. From here take a scenic drive over the Llanberis Pass to visit Electric Mountain, Europe’s largest hydro-electric pumped storage power station, deep inside Elidir Mountain. Also in Llanberis you can witness the dramatic impact of the slate industry and how it is integral to the history of North Wales. This fascinating story unfolds at the National Slate Museum where traditional skills are presented, and set against the harsh realities of life in the quarries and their communities . At Inigo Jones Slateworks visitors are invited to witness the various processes as craftsmen use age old skills to cut, shape and polish raw slate slabs into practical products such as kitchen worktops and hearths. Built for the wealthy Pennant family on the profits of Welsh slate and Jamaican sugar Penrhyn Castle is an extravagant example of early 19th century architecture. Filled with intricate carvings, stained glass and handmade wallpapers it’s a marvel to stroll through the rooms and see the one-ton slate bed made for Queen Victoria. Llechwedd Slate Caverns boasts Britain’s steepest passenger railway leading to a series of 10 sight and sound sequences with the ghost of a Victorian miner as

To find out more about the rich culture of Wales there’s no better starting place than King Arthur’s Labyrinth, in Corris. Sail underground, through the great waterfall, into a magical world of myths, legends and storytelling. The mighty leader’s feats of bravery, and his supernatural powers can be marvelled at on a mystical underground tour along a subterranean river through tunnels and caverns carved into the rock. At Sygun Copper Mine just outside Beddgelert experience each stage of the mining experience with a fascinating audiovisual tour. Go on foot through winding tunnels and cavernous chambers to witness copper ore veins with traces of precious metals. The greatest castle builder in Wales was actually the English conquerer Edward 1. In his thirteenth century campaigns he built an ‘iron ring’ of fortresses including castles at Caernarfon, Conwy, Harlech and Beaumaris which are now in the custodianship of Cadw and are listed as world heritage sites. Caernarfon Castle’s construction began in 1283 and it was intended not only as a military stronghold but also as a seat of government and royal palace. It once again gained international acclaim in 1969 as the setting for the investiture of Prince Charles as the Prince of Wales.

the narrator. At Sygun Copper Mine you can relive the days of a Victorian copper miner and explore the colourful caverns and tunnels in which there are magnificent stalactite and stalagmite formations.

ACTIVITIES FOR ALL AND FAMILY FRIENDLY

GLORIOUS GROUNDS

A multi-award winning all weather attraction, the

Colourful and magnificent throughout the seasons Bodnant Garden truly deserves its reputation as being one of the finest gardens in the world. In the spring magnolias, camellias and rhododendrons form a magnificent framework. The internationally renowned laburnum arch compliments the stunning shows of azaleas from May onwards. Bedding gives way to wondrous shades of autumn russets. Just a short drive up the A55 is situated Penrhyn Castle where there are panoramic walks of the park and a chance to explore the Victorian Walled garden. A wealth of exotic trees and shrubs are on display with an opportunity for the children to enjoy the adventure playground. Glynllifon Parc a grade 1 listed garden, first noted in 1639, is comprised of 70 acres of diverse planting. Among its marvels are a giant monkey puzzle tree which is over one hundred foot tall and giant red cedar trees. Follies dating back to the 18th Century include Chinese Island and there is a family treasure trail, sculptures to find and workshops to explore that were built as part of Glynllifon Hall Estate. Parc Padarn Country Park offers a different but equally rich experience. Contained within the 800 acres are two Sites of Special Scientific Interest and a nature reserve. Vivian Quarry, once a hive of industrial activity, is now a venue for extreme sports and a fine example of natural regeneration.Y Gwyllt (Welsh for wild place) extends over 70 acres at Portmeirion and features sub-tropical plants that thrive in the mild coastal climate. The gardens include woodland walks, a Chinese Pavillion and a ‘special

Fun Centre in Caernarfon, has 25ft drop slides, ball pools, rope bridges and under 5’s play area, a “Laser space sport” game arena and an interactive museum tracing the history of Christchurch. Also on this 17 acre site you can enjoy the longest slide in Wales, jump on a giant jumper, drive a mini-tractor, build a den or learn the art of stilt walking. In Llanberis, more thrills can be found as you swing through the air at Ropes and Ladders. Hopefully you will have your eyes open in order to admire the stunning views of mountains and lake. At Y Ffor near Pwllheli the young at heart are also catered for with an eight lane ten pin bowling centre at Glasfryn Parc Activity Centre as well as gokarting, quad trekking, clay pigeon shooting and the ancient art of falconry. For the culinary minded a farm shop stocks delicious ranges of locally produced fayre. LANGUAGE AND CULTURE The Welsh are understandably proud of their rich culture, and the language is a very important part of this living heritage, it being one of the oldest living languages in Europe. Around two out of three people in the area speak it (often as their first language) as well as English. The Welsh names of places in Snowdonia are often compounds of descriptive and poetic terms. Here are some words you will commonly come across: Aber Mouth of a river, Afon River Bryn Hill Dyffryn Valley

Hên Old Llan Church Llyn Lake Llys Court, palace,

Mawr Great, large Nant Rocky gorge Pont (or bont) Bridge, Tal Tall, high
