MINNEHAHA FALLS • A Field Trip “Must”

The life-size bronze sculpture by Jakob Fjelde depicts Hiawatha and Minnehaha, American Indian characters from the poem “Song of Hiawatha” by the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

The sculpture bears the inscription: Over wide and rushing rivers In his arms he bore the maiden.

On exhibit at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, the sculpture was purchased with pennies donated by school children in Minnesota – an effort organized

by Mrs. L.P. Hunt of Mankato – and dedicated in 1912. The sculpture, which rests on a small island in Minnehaha Creek, can be viewed from the water’s edge a short way above the famed and oftvisited Minnehaha Falls, and is located in Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Letter to Readers Welcome to Positive Energy Outdoors! As Duluth’s year round outdoor education center, we invite you to participate in one or more of our many programs. Outdoor education blends physical and social skills with experiences in nature, providing important learning opportunities for young people. Non-competitive outdoor education programs help youth increase physical activity levels and develop capacities for creativity, problem solving and emotional and intellectual development.1 Positive Energy Outdoors is located just 15 miles north of Duluth. Our 40 acre facility is surrounded by over 600 acres of public land, and includes waterfront on Fredenberg Lake, a 100 acre private lake, with easy access to Island Lake Reservoir. Our beautiful forested property also includes a large cranberry bog and miles of trail access for hiking, snowshoeing, dog sledding and sleigh and wagon rides. Positive Energy Outdoors’ draft horses and kennel of friendly Alaskan husky sled dogs are also housed on site. We produce our own power with a 3kw wind turbine and 1200 watt solar array. Other program sites include Lincoln Park, Ely’s Peak in Duluth and the North Shore of Lake Superior.

Whether you choose dog sledding on our 1/2 mile bog loop, kayaking on Fredenberg Lake or driving a team of draft horses, Positive Energy Outdoors’ programs encourage people and animal powered exploration of the outdoors.

Voyageurs National Park Located in the lake-country of northeastern Minnesota bordering Canada, the Park is a complex system of waterways, including the “voyageur highway” canoed by 18th-century fur traders.

Wildlife thrives here in the boreal-hardwood forest transition zone, and glacier-scoured landscape.

Travel Grants K-6th grade youth groups, including public schools, private schools, homeschoolers, scout troops, and youth outdoor leadership programs can apply for a travel grant to cover 50% or more of transportation costs for students to participate in one of the free field classes offered through the Environmental Education program at Voyageurs National Park.

Education Programs National Parks provide outstanding outdoor classrooms that support and enhance your learning objectives in the classroom. Voyageurs National Park offers environmental education programs, pre-school through sixth grade, at the park and in the classroom.

These programs encourage students to explore, experience, and engage in the learning process. Onsite programs take place at the Rainy Lake Visitor Center within Voyageurs National Park.

Most programs are aligned with Minnesota State Academic Standards.

Education programs are made possible in part by the Lone Wolf Fund of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation.

Farmamerica The Minnesota Agricultural Interpretive Center

The Minnesota Agricultural Interpretive Center (Farmamerica) welcomes your students for a funday of history and learning they will remember for years to come.

School tours traditionally run throughout spring and fall, but if you want to plan a tour for your group at another time, just let us know. Our programs are specifically designed for grades 3 – 6.

Admission: $5 per child for a guided tour.

10.00 – Tour guides escort group out to the sites. Kids will spend 30 – 45 minutes at each site with the guides.

1850’s Settlement Experience rural life in the 1850’s - the covered wagon settlers arrived in, their first dwelling dug out of the sod, a cabin, smoke house, garden and barn. The one-room schoolhouse and country church followed as a community developed.

1930’s Farm Site The 1930’s farm site, complete with house, barns, farm animals, and windmill is one of the most popular sites. Here, each child will be able to try their hand at milking a real live goat!

We can help create an experience for your class or group large or small‌Everything from storytelling and lectures to dance presentations and workshops‌ at our location or yours. The Culture camp incorporates presentations, workshops, storytelling and lectures in a primitive camping experience. Stay in a tipi overnight and eat traditional American Indian foods when you attend our culture Camp.

Here we set up Here we set up a tipi for a school, introduced the kids to a little Pow Wow style music , dance and then did storytelling with a little History about tribal life 200 years ago thrown in. This presentation ran 45 minutes for each class.

This group was looking to learn a little more about their tribal ways by creating a pipestone pipe at our store in Pipestone. We spent two days carving and sanding. As with all our workshops important cultural information and a tour of the quarries were part of the learning. Smaller projects such as carving arrowheads can be done in about an hour.

Drumming and singing is always a fun way to introduce a culture to children and adults alike.

Everyone here went away with a new understanding of music.

After a workshop our students learn more about what they have created and share some ideas. This was a weekend long pipemaking class done in Switzerland. Evening lectures on tribal histories and stories about the Pipestone Quarries were part of the workshop.

My Grandpa was a spiritual man for my people my grandmother a healer. I was taught to always be proud of my tribal heritage. I feel it is important to share this pride and my culture with others. As a storyteller I can share my history and culture in the same way it was traditional passed on through Origin Stories. From its beginnings, Faribault has consistently gained national recognition as an educational center. This is due in large measure to the efforts of Bishop Henry Whipple who developed the first Cathedral in the United States in Faribault and also developed a system of interrelated churches and schools.

Because of Faribault’s history and what it continues to provide, Faribault gained the nickname: the "Athens of the West".

Faribault is proud to have 43 individual properties that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making it the most historically honored city in Minnesota outside of the Twin Cities.

“Pearl of the Lake” is a modern day replica of the grand riverboats that traveled on the Mississippi River in the 1800’s.

True to tradition, her only means of propulsion is the twin paddlewheels in the stern.

The mussels that produce fresh water pearls are very sensitive to pollution and an important indicator of water clarity.

The Camp-In program is designed for kids grades Kindergarten and up and their adult leaders. There needs to be a minimum adult-to-youth ratio of 1:10 within your group.

Find treasures both human and divine The Cathedral of Saint Paul is one of the greatest architectural masterpieces in our nation. It enshrines priceless mosaics from the Vatican as well as windows and sculptures by some of the greatest American artists of the past century.

• Beaux Art design by French architect Emmanuel Masqueray • Cornerstone laid in 1907 under the direction of Archbishop John Ireland.

• First Mass celebrated on Palm Sunday March 28, 1915.

The Cathedral has one of the few life-size replicas of Michelangelo’s Pieta’s in North America. Thanks to a generous donor, the sculpture is now on permanent display.

Be sure to stop at the LEGO replica of the Cathedral build by LEGO Ambassador Roy Cook. It measures 5’ w x 6’ l x 3 ½ h and used 50,000 bricks. The stained glass windows are made up of 2,000 translucent blue bricks from Spain.

A suggested donation of $2 for an adult and $1 for a child will help us care for the upkeep of this irreplaceable landmark; however, no one will be turned away. Parking is free.

1864 It is Christmastime in Washington, DC. President Lincoln is trying to heal the wounds of a nation. Soldiers are bravely holding on to the promise of a brighter future for their country. And people of every walk of life long for wholeness as Christmas Eve draws near. This epic musical incorporates music of the era to give voice to the many characters living and working in Washington, D.C. during the final days of the Civil War. Filled with intrigue and surprise, this Christmas musical reveals a world that is simultaneously torn apart by war and held together by the hope for redemption. MAKE A DAY OF IT: Following the performance of A Civil War Christmas continue your student’s exploration of The Civil War at the Minnesota

History Center. Your students will get closer to the story through a special presentation about Charley Goddard, who was 15 years old when he enlisted in the First Minnesota Regiment of Infantry. By role-playing and examining primary sources, students follow Charley’s Civil War journey, from Fort Snelling to Gettysburg and elsewhere.

History Theatre brings some of the most explosive events and personalities of 1968 on to the stage with seven distinct perspectives on the year that rocked the world. The War in Vietnam, the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Senator Robert Kennedy, the Mexico Olympics, Lyndon B. Johnson and Hubert H. Humphrey, the election of Richard Nixon, and even the Apollo 8 mission broadcast on Christmas Eve. These events are surrounded by the unforgettable music of the era that entertained and reflected on a world in chaos. Recommended for students grades 8 – 12.

1927 The trials and tribulations of a 13-year-old girl never seem to change: sibling rivalry, boys, school dances, boys, homework, and… boys! Young Clotilde “Coco” Irvine, is the daughter of a lumber baron living in a fashionable Summit Avenue mansion in 1927. For Christmas she is given a diary in which she faithfully chronicles her thirteenth year. Coco’s Diary leads audiences on a winsome romp alongside our smart, adventurous, mischievous heroine surrounded by the beguiling music of the 1920s. It is a charming, funny and delightful entertainment for the entire family. Recommended for students grades 5 – 12.

MAKE A DAY OF IT: Give your students a first-hand look at the life of Summit Avenue residents in the early 1900s with a tour of the James J. Hill House. Tours emphasize the life and career of the Hill household, the architecture and interior design of the house, and the technological systems that provided heat, power, light, and communication for a “Gilded Age” home in the era of industrialization.

Wildlife Science Center Inspiring Relationships with the Wild The Wildlife Science Center is a non-profit, science based education facility that is home to the largest captive population of privately maintained wolves in the United States. Other resident animals include: black bears, foxes, lynx, coyote, skunks, raccoons, New Guinea Highland dogs, birds of prey, and a porcupine. The science behind the programs is demonstrated through the hands-on wildlife training of professional biologists and students worldwide, research involving wolf physiology and behavior, and conservation efforts that provide critical assistance to `endangered species recovery programs such as the red wolf and Mexican gray wolf.

We can help create an experience for your class or group large or small‌Everything from storytelling and lectures to dance presentations and workshops‌ at our location or yours. The Culture camp incorporates presentations, workshops, storytelling and lectures in a primitive camping experience. Stay in a tipi overnight and eat traditional American Indian foods when you attend our culture Camp.

Here we set up Here we set up a tipi for a school, introduced the kids to a little Pow Wow style music , dance and then did storytelling with a little History about tribal life 200 years ago thrown in. This presentation ran 45 minutes for each class.

This group was looking to learn a little more about their tribal ways by creating a pipestone pipe at our store in Pipestone. We spent two days carving and sanding. As with all our workshops important cultural information and a tour of the quarries were part of the learning. Smaller projects such as carving arrowheads can be done in about an hour.

Drumming and singing is always a fun way to introduce a culture to children and adults alike.

Everyone here went away with a new understanding of music.

After a workshop our students learn more about what they have created and share some ideas. This was a weekend long pipemaking class done in Switzerland. Evening lectures on tribal histories and stories about the Pipestone Quarries were part of the workshop.

Museum Marvels Grades Pre–K, 1–2, 3–4, 5–6, 7–9 and 10–12 While exploring the museum, each student seeks out an object that is truly a “marvel” to him or her. Chaperones receive cameras to take photos of the students next to their favorite things, and students answer questions about their choices. Past participants have used the pages to make a class book and to decorate school hallways.

Now on Display Grades Pre–K, 1–2, 3–4, 5–6, 7–9 and 10–12 Take on the role of an exhibit curator! Students receive a booklet to help them create their own museum. Using organizing themes, students explore our exhibits to find items that will fit into a museum of their own. The RAD Zoo Brings the Zoo to You! The Reptile & Amphibian Discovery Zoo, or RAD ZOO for short, offers Minnesotans a truly unique opportunity for a hands-on reptile experience. You can visit our zoo in Owatonna, MN or we will bring animals right to your door for a memorable event.

Educational School, Scout, and Daycare Programs We are available for a variety of different venues including: schools, after-school programs, libraries, daycare centers, home school students, scouts, and birthday parties.

Our presentations are highly informative, engaging, and interactive. We provide an enjoyable experience for our audience, while instilling a greater understanding of these unique animals and the incredible lives they live.

Our programs are designed to be age/grade appropriate and are available from pre-K to the collegiate level, allowing students to observe first-hand the diversity of these amazing animals.

A typical program will include ten of our fascinating reptiles and amphibians, including frogs, a salamander, turtles, lizards, snakes, and a small crocodilian.

•At

the conclusion of our presentation we provide an opportunity for the students to come up and take a closer look at our animals, including a chance to touch one or two of our animals in a controlled setting, after which we provide hand sanitizer to the students.

Our zoo has done more than one thousand educational programs for delighted audiences throughout Minnesota and neighboring states. We prefer to offer our programs to smaller groups of students (one or two classes at a time) to offer a more personalized experience, but are able to do larger groups at your request. Our programs are priced as modestly as possible to allow for multiple presentations, allowing for better age grouping and a more rewarding experience for each student.

Birthday Parties If you would like the convenience of having us bring the animals to you we offer three birthday program packages lasting from 45 to 75 minutes and including 10 animals including amphibians, turtles, lizards, snakes, and the option of an alligator.

The Standard Birthday presentation includes amphibians, turtles, lizards, small snakes, and a five foot-long boa constrictor or python. Presentations are for groups of up to 12 kids and lasts 45 minutes. All of the guests will get to pet a few of the animals and help hold the larger snake for a group photo and the birthday child will be able to hold a few additional animals for photos.

If you’re feeling brave your family may hold the larger snake for a group photo as well.

The Deluxe Gator Party presentation features everything from the standard package, and also includes a small alligator and instead of the 5 foot –long snake, you will get a 7 foot or longer boa or a beautiful yellow python. All of the kids will receive a reptile temporary tattoo. This program is for up to 25 kids and lasts up to an hour.

The Premium Party presentation includes the same animals as the deluxe party, with the addition of a redeyed treefrog and a chameleon, This party also includes an extra fifteen minutes for each of the children to hold the alligator while you take their picture.

Wildlife Science Center Inspiring Relationships with the Wild The Wildlife Science Center is a non-profit, science based education facility that is home to the largest captive population of privately maintained wolves in the United States. Other resident animals include: black bears, foxes, lynx, coyote, skunks, raccoons, New Guinea Highland dogs, birds of prey, and a porcupine. The science behind the programs is demonstrated through the hands-on wildlife training of professional biologists and students worldwide, research involving wolf physiology and behavior, and conservation efforts that provide critical assistance to `endangered species recovery programs such as the red wolf and Mexican gray wolf.

This one tip could mean THOUSANDS of $!

Markita Andrews sold more cookies than anyone had ever sold in the history of Girl Scouts.

During an interview with Johnny Carson, Markita said it was definitely hard work knocking on all those doors... but when someone answered, she usually sold them 3 boxes of cookies.

Here's what Markita said was the secret for her great success...

"When someone answered the door, I'd ask them if they could make a $30,000 donation to the Girl Scouts or, at least, buy 3 boxes of cookies."

Markita probably didn't realize she was using the powerful selling principal known as the LAW OF CONTRASTS. The LAW OF CONTRASTS states that when a person is given only one option, they decide 'yes or no'. However, when a person is given 2 options, they decide 'which is better'. Fundraisers who offer only one option put their potential customers in a 'yes or no' position. Fundraisers can use the Law of Contrasts to always give customers 2 options to put customers in a 'which is better' position - and end up selling more fundraising products.

You can use this POWERFUL law to sell more fundraising products... and do so more quickly.

Here’s an idea (using the example of cookies): simply suggest 2 different quantities of boxes to your customers...

"Including all the kinds of cookies you see, would you rather get 3 boxes, or would you like to get 6 boxes so you can save 3 for later?"

Watch sales grow as neighbors, friends, and family-members buy more products. Your kids will definitely get more “I’ll take 3 boxes” orders, while helping your organization.

What’s a CONVENTION & VISITOR BUREAU? Also known as CVBs, Convention and Visitor Bureaus are not-for-profit organizations charged with representing a specific destination/community/region, marketing this specific area, with the mandate of helping the long-term tourism revenue development of their area through a travel and tourism strategy that involves leisure travel, group travel, and corporate/organization meetings, conferences & conventions.

Convention and visitor bureaus can be either membership organizations bringing together businesses that rely on tourism revenue for funding, or can be funded through special hotel taxes that are ear-marked for CVB usage.

For visitors, CVBs are like a key to the city. As an unbiased resource, CVBs can serve as a broker or an official point of contact for tour operators, visitors, and meeting planners. They assist with preparation and encourage visitors to visit local historic, arts & culture, festival & events, and recreational venues.

Why is a CVB valuable for you?

• CVBs offer unbiased information & preparation services about a destination - usually at no cost!

• CVBs save visitors time and energy, as they are a one-stop shop for local tourism information

How can a CVB help you plan your school trip?

Convention and visitor bureaus make planning and implementing your field trip less time-consuming and more streamlined. They can provide access to numerous services and value-added extras (that you may not even be aware of). Before your visit begins, CVB representatives can help set up visits to attractions, check hotel availability, and even arrange for personal or group familiarization (aka “site”) tours. CVBs can also link planners with the suppliers, from charter bus companies to recreation venues that can help meet the requirements of your field trip.

• CVBs can assist you in all areas of preparation and provide you with detailed reference materials • CVBs can quickly and easily establish room blocks at local hotels (providing rooms are available) • CVBs can act as a liaison between you and community officials, thus clearing the way for special permits, street closures, et cetera...for your event • CVBs can obtain special letters of welcome from high-ranking government officials and in some cases, even bring officials to speak to your group

From its beginnings, Faribault has consistently gained national recognition as an educational center. This is due in large measure to the efforts of Bishop Henry Whipple who developed the first Cathedral in the United States in Faribault and also developed a system of interrelated churches and schools.

Because of Faribault’s history and what it continues to provide, Faribault gained the nickname: the "Athens of the West".

Faribault is proud to have 43 individual properties that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making it the most historically honored city in Minnesota outside of the Twin Cities.

Faribault Energy Park Faribault Energy Park creates electrical energy, but it also serves as a working educational classroom about energy and the environment to better understand energy generation, especially environmentally friendly ways to generate electricity. The facility is an attractive, approachable campus, including public access to walking, fishing, bird watching and other recreational activities - hence the name: Faribault Energy Park.

Shattuck St. Mary’s School & STEM School Students, teachers and kids of all ages are welcome to come and explore the new STEM School (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math). Shattuck St. Mary’s has earned the reputation internationally as one of the top college preparatory schools in the world but its new STEM school is open to students at any age to come and explore for the day, weekend or longer with specially designed programs.
