LEARNING INSPIRES!
Hello teachers! Meet SciEd— science education support and programs for teachers. At the Science Museum of Minnesota, we are passionate about science education and advancing science literacy. We’re equally passionate about supporting teachers. That’s why we have created SciEd—just for you. SciEd will help you bring the fascinating world of science to life for your students. SciEd is our comprehensive offering to support teachers: through field trip packages at the museum, residencies and assemblies at your school and classroom, our Science House lending library, teacher professional development, and other STEM-related resources. Additionally, we want communication with teachers to be ongoing through email, gatherings, and teacher feedback. Your input helps us be better prepared to bring science to life. Together, we prepare students for success.
INFORMAL LEARNING STICKS Informal learning is active, engaging, and fun! More importantly, it has many benefits. Studies show that students remember details from an informal learning experience, which strengthens and deepens knowledge of the subjects they are studying. Field trips improve critical thinking skills and make connections between art, science, math, and history.

No worries: we make it easy
Field trips are informal learning at its best. “Having exhibits that support or reinforce a standard is just what is needed to cement learning for students.” ANN THONET NOKOMIS MONTESSORI SCHOOL, ST. PAUL
AND, THEY’RE FUN AND EASY TO PLAN! A field trip is one of the most dynamic, fun-filled ways to engage your students in hands-on learning. Field trips deliver lifelong memories, and research shows that kids remember what they learn on a field trip. That’s powerful! Field trips at the Science Museum of Minnesota are beyond the ordinary. Our world-class exhibitions and galleries are one-of-a-kind. The exhibitions, each paired with a film in our 90-foot, domed-screen Omnitheater, provide a truly engaging, learning-filled day.
Academic standards matter to us, and to you The Science Museum offers a searchable database that connects our exhibits, programs, and resources directly to Minnesota Academic Standards for science, math, and other subjects by grade level. We think you’ll find our Standards Database to be an invaluable resource. smm.org/standards
Take advantage of our field trip planning expertise We know teachers are pressed for time and resources, so we’re here to help make planning a field trip as easy and seamless as possible. Our Reservations Center is staffed with experienced specialists who will listen to your needs, answer questions, and customize and plan your itinerary. They can help explain everything—from pricing and lunch options to how to obtain discount busing
After you’ve planned and booked your day with us, you’ll receive a confirmation letter and itinerary with all the details. In addition, our website provides great tips and information to help you make the most of your day, including entertaining videos for you, your students, and chaperones. smm.org/fieldtrips/videos
Everyone is welcome Making field trips accessible to everyone is important to us. Whether your challenges include busing or ticket costs, meals or special needs, we are prepared to make the day possible and successful for all. smm.org/fieldtrips

“Having the Science Museum at our schools is always a great opportunity for our teachers to see how different educators use innovative techniques, materials, and positive energy.” CATHY KINDEM ROSEMOUNT, APPLE VALLEY, EAGAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS
16 Let us help you plan a visit AT YOUR SCHOOL:
Supercharge your students’ science curiosity. Invite the Science Museum to your school.
Assemblies are a fun, highenergy, high-impact way to introduce or review core science concepts. Designed for large groups of up to 250 students, assemblies involve students directly. Student volunteers participate with props and demonstrations throughout the presentations. Program content and lengths are tailored to grade level: 40 minutes for K-2 and 50 minutes for grades 3-5. With the new emphasis on engineering standards, our elementary school engineering assemblies are growing in popularity.
TEACHERS APPRECIATE THE CLASS PARTICIPATION AND SCIENCE FUN. Our programs at your school are a great way to energize your science curriculum. Our cross-curricular team of more than 25 professional teachers and presenters travel throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Science Museum instructors teach a broad range of subjects from chemistry and technology to engineering and physics. Students experience hands-on science through group assemblies and residencies that take place in your classroom. How do we know that our programs are successful? We are invited back year after year, and often hear that our visit is a highlight of the school year. To book an assembly, residency, or to learn more, call us at 651-221-4748; or email us at schooloutreach@smm.org. See page 18 for our regional tour schedule.

RESIDENCIES
Introduce and reinforce new science topics The Science Museum’s in-depth residencies can be a one-day visit or up to four days. Residencies create an opportunity for students to dive deeper into hands-on science. Residencies kick off with an assembly to introduce the topic or concept, which is then reinforced and built upon through additional instruction in individual classrooms. Science Museum instructors emphasize interactivity. Students solve problems using scientific equipment and apply science concepts to their daily lives.

EiE PROMOTES STEM AND CONNECTS WITH LITERACY AND SOCIAL STUDIES. ®
Engineering is Elementary (EiE) is a research-based, academic standardsbased curriculum and professional development for educators. It is designed to integrate science and technology concepts with elementary school engineering lessons. Teachers gain effective teaching techniques and students make important learning connections. EiE was developed by the Museum of Science, Boston. Over the past four years, the Science Museum of Minnesota has worked with nearly 500 teachers to implement EiE programs in more than 50 schools in the Upper Midwest. Learn about our three programs. To schedule or find out more information, feel free to contact us: 651-221-4540, eie@smm.org.
EiE IMMERSION RESIDENCIES
EiE TEACHER WORKSHOPS
EiE FAMILY PROGRAM
EiE Immersion Residencies take place in your classroom, requiring just seven to eight hours over two weeks. Our high-quality instructors do all the planning, model effective techniques in your classroom, and offer you tips and ideas. Students enjoy having a special instructor and fun, hands-on sessions.
Increase your confidence in engineering and technology instruction in our teacher-focused workshops. Choose from either a three-hour EiE overview introduction or a more in-depth six-hour workshop with unit-specific training. For a schedule of our workshops go to smm.org/eie.
As a wrap-up to a residency or as a stand-alone event, you can host a Be Creative– Be an Engineer! family program at your school. Everyone brings their inner engineer to life by experimenting with materials, designing, and building objects that solve engineering challenges.

RESOURCES & TRAINING
Together, we’re making a difference! By supporting teachers, principals, and district leaders, we are helping achieve systemic changes in educational systems. Check out these gains in member districts where we’ve worked: • Cedar Park STEM Magnet in Apple Valley, with 53% students of color, advanced from 23% proficient in science in 2008 to 58% in 2011. The gain was concurrent with three years of professional development programming. • Glacier Hills Arts and Science Magnet in Eagan, with 38% students of color and 31% on Free/Reduced Lunch (F/RL), advanced from 33% proficient in science in 2008 to 73% in 2011. • Fifth graders in Richfield, with 63% students of color and 47% students on F/RL, advanced from 16% proficient in science in 2010 to 40% in 2012. Learn more at smm.org/schools/profdev or by calling 651-221-2566.
