Dear Tina Dear Tina, I have a question about when to breastfeed my newborn daughter. I was told to feed her every 2-3 hours, but sometimes she cries after an hour and a half. I wasn’t sure if I should wait to feed her, but it doesn’t seem right to let her cry. What advice do you have? Sincerely, Tentative Tasha

Dear Tentative Tasha, I’m glad you asked; I get this question a lot from new parents. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you breastfeed your newborn at least every two to three hours during the day, and allow no more than four hours between feedings during the night. The reason for this is to prevent dehydration and to ensure that your newborn is getting enough nutrition. Newborns tend to be very sleepy. It is okay to wake her if she goes too long between feedings and if your daughter is showing signs of hunger sooner than 2 hours, you should feed her. The best way to track the time between feedings is from the start of one feeding to the start of the next. Remember, crying is a late sign of hunger and sometimes it can be difficult to get a very hungry baby to latch. If you would like assistance with recognizing other hunger cues or have other questions, give us a call here at the New Parent Support Program (655-4ACS). Other great resources are the breastfeeding support groups and lactation consultants available at Tripler AMC, Schofield Barracks, and Kaneohe Bay. You can make an appointment by calling (808) 433-2778. Best wishes, Tina
