Dear Tina, Lately I noticed that I sound just like my mom, always yelling and nagging my kids. I remember when I was a kid I promised myself I wouldn’t do that to my kids, but here I am. They don’t listen until I get upset and I spend most of my time frustrated. I don’t know how to change this rut. What can I do? Sincerely, Nagging Natalie

Dear Nagging Natalie, As my own mother’s words slip out of my mouth from time to time, I gain a new understanding of why she said the things she did when I was growing up; life is busy and parenting is hard work! It’s easy to fall into a rut, and just react moment by moment. However, we can do better with our children if we have a good parenting plan in place. Changing habits is not easy, but it’s great that you are recognizing the “rut”. That’s a step in the right direction! I recommend a program called 123 Magic, which we can assist you with here at the New Parent Support Program (808-655-4227). The parenting program will help you learn to remain calm and to let the consequences do the talking. This way you can spend more time enjoying your children. As you implement a good discipline program, you also want to remember to praise your children for the positive things they do and for their achievements. Spend a little time each day with each of your children, one-onone, reading together or talking about their day. This will help you to feel bonded with each other and to create positive memories together. Best wishes, Tina
