ACS Open House & 52nd Birthday Celebration! Tuesday, July 25th, 2017

Building 2091 Schofield Barracks 655-4ACS (4227)

1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. ACS Building

Dear Tina, I have a 1 month-old daughter and I’m very confused because I read a lot of stuff on the internet about having her sleep in my bed to help our bonding and make breastfeeding successful. My friend also has a new baby and told me that you shouldn’t have them sleep in your bed because you might roll on them or they could suffocate. I don’t think I would roll on her, but now I am worried. What do you suggest? Thank You, Anxious Angela Dear Anxious Angela,

Dear Tina

Answers questions for parents who are expecting or have young children age 0 to 3 years old. Tina is a registered nurse, certified breastfeeding specialist, certified infant massage instructor, educator and home visitor with the ACS, New Parent Support Program (NPSP).

Thank you for writing. I think a lot of new moms are struggling with this question and the conflicting advice that’s out there. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics: “Bed sharing remains the greatest risk factor for sleep related infant deaths.” It is much safer to provide your baby with a bassinet or crib next to your bed. The following are additional tips from the National Institute of Health for safe sleep environments for infants: Use a firm sleep surface, such as a mattress in a safety-approved crib,

covered by a fitted sheet

Do not use pillows, blankets, sheepskins, or crib bumpers anywhere

in your baby’s sleep area

Keep soft objects, toys, and loose bedding out of your baby’s bed Do not smoke or let anyone smoke around your baby Always place your baby on his or her back to sleep

Submit questions to deartinahawaii@gmail.com or stop by ACS, Schofield Barracks.

In addition to the suffocation hazards usually present in bed-sharing, there is also a risk of a sleeping adult rolling on top of an infant or the infant falling off the bed, or becoming wedged in gaps between the mattress and headboard. Alcohol consumption by parents increases the risk of bedsharing deaths.

For more information call 655-4ACS.

While lots of holding, cuddling, and skin-to- skin time will enhance breastfeeding and bonding, it should be done while you are awake. Take care and stay safe! Tina

Multidisciplinary Inclusion Action Team By Dawn Hatico

The Multidisciplinary Inclusion Action Team (MIAT) formally known as the Special Needs Accommodation Process (SNAP) is a multidisciplinary team established to determine what accommodations need to be made for children with special needs. We want your child to be successful in his or her placement in Child and Youth Services programs. As parents, we all want our children to meet their full potential. Enrolling your children into group activities, learning centers, organized sports and other events will not only encourage social development, but it will help promote inclusion within the youth community. Parents, you play a very special role in making sure your children are afforded equal opportunity to thrive, so put MIAT into gear and learn how the MIAT can help you. The members of the MIAT team include parents and/or guardians, a representative from the Army Community Service Exceptional Family Member Program (ACS EFMP), an Army Public Health Nurse (APHN), and a CYS designee. All other personnel are augmented as needed. Parents or guardians are vital members in the MIAT, and participation is essential to the overall success of children in CYS programs. Parents help by providing the MIAT team with a brief history and outline of the child’s current condition, concerns and actions and interventions taken. You may also be asked to provide medical documentation, statements of illnesses, allergies and copies of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) if applicable. In the MIAT process, you will complete a CYS Service DA 7625-1 Health Screening Tool. Once complete, this form will be turned into CYS Parent Central Services, who will forward the completed forms to the APHN for review and recommendations. In some instances, a Medical Action Plan (MAP) and/or Special Diet Statement will be provided to you. The MAP will be completed by your child’s physician and will state your child’s diagnosis and any required accommodations. Not all participants require a full meeting, but if the APHN determines a Full MIAT is necessary, a MIAT meeting must be scheduled. ACS EFMP will contact you and the appropriate MIAT team members to schedule a MIAT meeting. At the meeting, your child’s needs are discussed, along with recommendations for a developmentally appropriate environment. The MIAT team will consider any health, developmental, physical, social, emotional, learning and behavioral issues that affect your child. Also addressed at the MIAT meeting, will be the expectations and partnership of service between the Family and CYS staff. The goal is to ensure that your child has the very best experience at CYS and that staff understand and provide the care that your child needs.

Recommendations

for Parents for the MIAT meeting: Please arrive on time. Be ready to discuss your child’s medical

history to assist the team in placing your child within CYS Bring documentation: child’s IEP, Behavioral Support Plan (BSP) and/or Individual Family Support Plan (IFSP), if he or she has one. Expect at least three MIAT members to be present. Meetings generally last 45-60 minutes. It is the responsibility of each parent or guardian to follow up and provide requested information to the MIAT team.
