POKI’I (SIBLING) SUPPORT By: Stacey Schrager, EFMP System Navigator Being a sibling of an Exceptional Family Member can be a simultaneously rewarding and challenging role. When a child is diagnosed with a developmental delay, life-threatening illness, disability or chronic medical condition, often siblings can feel left out and become frustrated and discouraged. Other naturally occurring feelings they can experience are: anger, guilt, confusion, worry, and embarrassment. They may find themselves in situations that their peers with typically developing siblings do not face, with feelings that their peers do not experience. These feelings are not good or bad, they’re just feelings and sometimes they can lead to siblings acting out, trying to shift the attention onto them. Even if your child seems to be doing well, it’s always important to be mindful of their feelings and to take time each day to let them know you are always available to listen and to support them in anyway. EFMP is offering four, Poki’i (Sibling) Support Classes in 2018. Sibling Support is for children ages 6 to16 years old who are siblings of Exceptional Family Members. These classes use upbeat and appealing group activities that emphasize the importance of their role as a sibling and to recognize that they have feelings and experiences to share. Each session encourages various forms of expression and are used to allow each child an opportunity to express themselves in a comfortable supportive environment. There are 12 slots available per class. Sibling Support classes can give these siblings a place where the entire focus is about them and gives them positive coping strategies as well as see the strengths within their family. They are able to have peer support to show them that they are not alone in this journey and other kids are going through similar things that they are facing. Please call 808-655-4227 and ask to speak with someone in EFMP to register for the upcoming class on April 6th, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Army Community Service.

Dear Tina Dear Tina, My wife and I are dual service and about to become parents. We’re very excited, but we’re also worried about how we will manage taking care of our baby when we both go back to work after she is born. Do you have any helpful tips? Signed, Diligent Dad-to-be Dear Diligent Dad-to-be, Congratulations! Parenting brings so much joy to our lives, and many challenges and opportunities as well. Being dual service, you may have to do some creative planning and scheduling to meet your family’s needs. It can be done - and has been done successfully by many military families. One suggestion I have is for you to call CYS, Parent Central Services, very soon at (808) 655-5893, to find out what options are available for child care. You will also want to start thinking about “back-up” arrangements for days when your child is sick and cannot attend daycare or for when you and your wife may both need to work late. Make sure you have a good family care plan in place. A clear, family care plan will assist your family in planning for both expected and unexpected changes along the way. Consider taking some parenting classes or enrolling in the New Parent Support Program for parenting education and support either prior to, or after your daughter’s arrival. You can reach us at (808) 655-4227 for further information. Best Wishes, Tina
