Dear Tina Dear Tina, Mother’s Day is coming up and my husband said he wants to send me to a spa to get pampered. It’s really sweet of him, but I don’t think I’m ready to be away from my 4 month old daughter yet. She cries if she’s away from me for a few minutes, even if my husband is holding her. If he can’t get her to stop crying right away he gives her back to me. I don’t think he can handle things while I’m gone and I don’t want her to think I abandoned her, but I sure could use a break. What should I do? Sincerely, Hessie Tant
Dear Hessie Tant, As you well know, caring for an infant full-time is very hard work! In my opinion, self-care should be a priority for you. If you are completely drained and exhausted, you won’t have the same patience and enjoyment of your daughter that you would have if you took some time to rest, relax, and recharge. A break for you would also provide a great opportunity for your husband to enhance his parenting skills and to gain confidence in his ability to care for his daughter. It may be a little rough for everyone at first, but I recommend regular one-on-one time together to increase the father-daughter bond, which is very important for both of them. If it seems less stressful for all of you, consider making the first venture brief, maybe just an hour or two. It might be helpful to have a friend or family member, who is experienced with children, available for him to call for questions so your rest time isn’t interrupted. One final suggestion is to invite your husband to the next Boot Camp for New Parents class at ACS. It’s a fun way to review the basics of infant care and to learn a few helpful techniques for comforting a crying baby. You can register online at himwr.com/ACS. Good luck and enjoy your Mother’s Day treat! Best wishes, Tina www.HiMWR.com
