DVAM
SELF DEFENSE CLASS “End the silence. Stop the Violence.”
October 20 • 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. Martinez Physical Fitness Center, SB
Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) is recognized across the country every October because domestic violence affects men and women. In the United States, an average of 20 people are physically abused by intimate partners every minute. This equates to more that 10 million abuse victims annually. DVAM is the time of year we mourn those who died as a result of domestic violence, celebrate those who have survived, and connect with others in our fight to end violence. As a sign of awareness, we wear the color purple. The color purple will be worn every Friday during DVAM. The color purple is meant to be a symbol of peace, courage, survival, honor, and dedication to ending violence. Members of the military community on Schofield Barracks are joining together during the month of October to honor victims of domestic violence and to challenge all of us to learn the contributing factors and preventive measures related to domestic violence. Domestic Violence Awareness Month will kick off with the signing of the proclamation on Friday, September 29, 2017, at 4:00 p.m. at the Nehelani Banquet and Conference Center, 1249 KoleKole Avenue, Schofield Barracks. The signing of the proclamation declares October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM).
Facebook Couples Challenge
DVAM events in Sept/Oct include: a 5K Run/Walk on Friday, September 29, 2017 at 6:30 a.m. on Weyand Field, Schofield Barracks. A Couple Enrichment workshop, Self-Defense class, and Facebook Activity for couples will occur during October. Several Outreach Tables will be displayed throughout the community to raise awareness of domestic violence.
Register at ACS from October 2-6 Compete in FREE Challenges from October 10-23
DVAM Outreach Schedule:
“Be a Winning Couple”
There will be a new challenge posted each day on the ACS facebook events page. Post your submission in the events page to rack up points. The three teams with the most points will win a prize basket.

Dear Tina Dear Tina, I want to start traditions for the holidays with my two year old son, but he is afraid of everything. I want him to enjoy dressing up and trick-or-treating this year, but he even gets afraid of the decorations he sees at the stores. Last year he wouldn’t stop crying on Santa’s lap. What can I do to help him think the holidays are fun? Signed, Bummed out Bailee Dear Bummed out Bailee, One of the most enjoyable aspects of parenting is being able to recreate some of our happiest childhood memories for our children. The only problem is that sometimes we parents are so anxious for those moments to come, that we ‘push it’ before they are old enough to ‘get it’. Infants and young children have a difficult time understanding the difference between real and pretend. If you can imagine believing some of those frightening costumes and Halloween displays are real, you can imagine how terrifying Halloween can be for little ones. I would suggest limiting activities to your son’s comfort level. Also, there are some options in the community for toddler friendly Halloween activities. ACS hosts a Halloween-themed open house each year. The staff dress in non-scary costumes, hand out candy and have age-appropriate activities for the kids. Call 655-4ACS for details on these events. Check out other kid-friendly community events on Oahu, like pumpkin patches and shopping center Halloween activities. Have a safe and happy holiday! Best wishes, Tina
