September is Gold Star Mothers and Families month ACS is here to provide quality support services, various training and education to our Army community of Soldiers, Families, Civilians and Retirees stationed on Oahu. Building 2091 Schofield Barracks 655-4ACS (4227)

The military life poses many challenges due to the nature of the job. Families experience several stressors that include multiple deployments, training out in the field, and in worst-case scenario, even through death. When a military family experiences a death of a service member who is serving our U.S. Armed Forces, it brings a lot of turmoil, and it changes their lives forever. Military families who have suffered the loss of a Service Member while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces are called Gold Star Families. A gold star is a symbol of great sacrifice made by our service members who have died while serving our U.S. Armed Forces. The term Gold Star dates back to World War I when mothers of service members would display a service flag, with a blue star, from their homes to indicate that their sons were deployed. A gold star was then embossed over the blue star showing that the service member had given their life for our country, but have also left behind grieving family members. The term Gold Star Families continues to be used to symbolize the group of military families who have suffered great loss and whose lives will never be the same. Gold Star Families are parents, spouses, siblings and children of our Fallen Heroes. Gold Star Families are provided a Gold Star or Next of Kin lapel button, by the Department of Defense, as a symbol of sacrifice and military loss. When you see a Gold Star Family wearing the gold star or next of kin lapel button, know that they have lost a loved one while serving our U.S. Armed Forces. As a community, providing support to assist our Gold Star Families through their healing journey is what we can do to ensure they know that they are not alone. Gold Star Families lives’ have shattered forever, and as Americans, we need to assist them by picking up the pieces. There are wounds that are not visible, and some tend to hide them with a smile on their face, but that scar in their heart remains forever. Let’s ensure we never forget the sacrifices made by our Fallen Heroes by joining together and honoring our Gold Star Mothers and Families.

Dear Tina, I don’t know who else to ask because all the advice I’ve read doesn’t work on my son. I feel like I’m not a good parent because my son, (he’s 2 years old), always runs away from me when we are out shopping and won’t listen. He wants everything he sees and he screams and throws himself on the ground if he doesn’t get it. People are always staring at me like I’m a child abuser. I’m so embarrassed, but the only thing that makes him quiet in a store is to buy him toys and candy. Help! Sincerely, Tired Tiffany

Dear Tina

Answers questions for parents who are expecting or have young children age 0 to 3 years old. Tina is a registered nurse, certified breastfeeding specialist, certified infant massage instructor, educator and home visitor with the ACS, New Parent Support Program (NPSP). Submit questions to deartinahawaii@gmail.com or stop by ACS, Schofield Barracks. For more information call 655-4ACS.

Dear Tired Tiffany, I think nearly every parent can relate to what you are experiencing - the dreaded public humiliation and exhaustion of trying to shop with a toddler. First, take comfort in knowing that this phase will pass. Secondly, understand that a store is an exciting place for little ones. There are so many exciting things to look at and so many temptations to touch. It sounds like your son is reacting like a normal two year old. Following these golden rules when shopping with a toddler should help: Don’t lose your cool – it only escalates the situation. Never reward a tantrum – don’t give him toys or candy to quiet him. In doing so, you are training him to throw a tantrum every time you shop. Tell him what is expected of him before entering the store - at a level he can understand, prep him with the rules and what the consequence will be if he doesn’t listen, (i.e. if he runs away from you, he has to sit in the basket for the rest of the trip or hold your hand). Follow through with what you tell him, even if it is uncomfortable for you. You may have to finish your trip with an unhappy toddler in the basket, or leave early, but it will be worth it eventually. Try to minimize how often you take him with you for now. If possible have him stay home with dad or a trusted friend while you shop. When he’s older he will have more ability to have patience and self-control. Don’t forget to offer praise when he follows the rules! There is a non-physical discipline program, called 123 Magic, which I highly recommend for children ages 2-12 years old. Call the New Parent Support Program (655-4ACS) for information on this program or for one-on-one help from one of our home visitors. As always, share your concerns with your pediatrician to rule out any underlying health issues which may contribute to challenging behaviors. Best wishes, Tina
