Soldiers Helping Soldiers Army Emergency Relief (AER) is a non-profit private organization created in 1942 by Soldiers, to provide emergency financial assistance for Soldiers and their Families during World War II. AER was established using donations, and continues to be funded by donations from Soldiers and the community. AER receives those donations via its annual fundraising campaign, and from no other sources. AER needs your help during the annual campaign, which runs March 1 to May 15, 2017. Anyone may donate through their Unit, on line at www.aerhq.org, or at the AER Office at Army Community Service, 2091 Kolekole Ave, Schofield Barracks. The primary mission of AER is assistance with financial emergencies related to basic living expenses, such as rent, POV repair, utility payments, food, clothing, emergency travel, and funeral expenses. In 2016, AER at USAG-HI assisted 1,418 Soldiers, retirees, and Family members with $2.3 million in loans and grants. The secondary mission of AER is providing education scholarships for children and spouses of active duty and retired Soldiers. Applications for scholarships are accepted January 1 to May 1, with supporting documentation due by April 1, 3 p.m. EST. The main reason scholarships are denied is failure to submit supporting documentation by the April 1 deadline. Applications are available on line at: www.aerhq.org. We look forward to your donations and support! For more information please contact the Schofield Barracks AER Office at 808-655-7132.

Dear Tina, My son just turned one year old and I breastfeed him. The problem is I can’t get him to eat hardly any solid foods. He only wants milk, but I feel like he should have other food at this age and I remember the doctor saying to give him solids at 6 months. I try, but he stopped wanting it lately. I’m getting worried he’s not getting enough nutrition. What should I do? Sincerely, Distraught Denise
Dear Tina

Dear Distraught Denise, Kudos to you for breastfeeding your son for a full year! The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for at least one year and as long as you and your child both want to beyond that. Breastmilk continues to provide an excellent source of nutrition and immune factors for your son beyond the first year, but you are correct in encouraging him to incorporate solids in his diet as well. One thing to keep in mind is that your son’s growth rate has slowed as he transitioned from infancy to toddlerhood, so his appetite may have decreased. He requires approximately 1,000 to 1,300 calories per day. His tiny tummy is about the size of his fist, so just a few bites can sometimes feel like a meal to him. Toddlers notoriously are picky eaters and begin to exert their independence with their favorite word, “no.” As he heads into this new stage, try not to engage in a power struggle with him. Just be sure to offer healthy foods from each food group and allow him to pick and choose. Toddlers love to “dip” so this may be an enticing way to get some steamed veggies in him. You can use healthy alternatives to catsup or dressing with foods like yogurt, or cottage cheese. Be creative, you can come up with some of your own! Toddlers also like to “graze” on bite sized foods, nibbling here and there throughout the day as opposed to sitting for three large meals. It’s okay; just be sure to minimize choking hazards by cutting foods into extra small pieces. He will be more in sync with the family meal routine when he’s a bit older. One last trick is to hide veggies in a homemade smoothie. I used to put spinach and other greens in with a half of a banana (for sweetness) and frozen berries (for a pink color), and my kids were none the wiser. Lastly, take heart, picky eating is a very common part of the toddler phase, but if you feel concerned that he is not growing as he should please check with your son’s pediatrician. As always, you are welcome to call us here at the New Parent Support Program (655-4ACS) for more in depth and individual assistance. Best wishes, Tina
