EDUCATION that goes wherever you go
The Period of Purple Crying Take a look around your companies, neighborhoods or churches, and you may notice an abundance of expectant parents and newborn babies. Every baby is different, but all babies cry. As we prepare for Child Abuse Prevention Month this April, it is important to shine light on this developmentally appropriate, albeit challenging, period of development known as, “The Period of PURPLE Crying.” According to Marilyn Barr, the founder of the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome SBS/AHT, “The Period of PURPLE Crying begins at about 2 weeks of age and continues until about 3-4 months of age.” P - Peak of Crying: Your baby may cry more each week - more at two months old, less in 3-5 months old
Gain the knowledge to advance your military career or transition to a civilian career with classes in Hawaii or online.
U - Unexpected: Crying can come and go and you don’t know why R - Resists Soothing: Your baby may not stop crying no matter what you try P - Pain like face: A crying baby may look like they are in pain, even when they are not L - Long Lasting: Crying can last as much as 5 hours a day, or more

E - Evening: Your baby may cry in the late afternoon and evening Knowing that PURPLE crying is a time in development that will end can be incredibly helpful to parents. Understanding stages of child development (including PURPLE crying) can also help prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome. Even those of us without children can support parents and use our knowledge of PURPLE crying to create safer communities. Supported, connected Families make for stronger Families and healthy, resilient communities. Army Community Service’s Family Advocacy Program strives to support Soldiers and Families. If you are struggling, your ACS ohana can help. We offer a variety of classes and groups that can assist with soothing techniques, expectation management, parenting education and skill building. ne of the many challenges military Fami lies face is the Permanent Change of Station (PCS) seas on. Moving is an inevitable and stressful component of military Family life, and it can feel even more challenging when you have Family members who have special needs; parti cularly, if they are not familiar with or are sensitive to the stres sors of air travel. The Smith Family has PCS’d twice befo re. However, this time, their son is older and was also recently diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ASD is a deve lopmental disorder that affects communication and behavior. Jack is now 6 years old and is more aware of his surroundings. He becomes hypersensitive in crowds and around loud noises, whic h often leads to meltdowns. Aside from making sure Jack understan ds what is going to happen and giving him the time to expr ess his thoughts and feelings about the move, Jack’s parents will also take sensory items, books, and toys to help keep him occupied while on the flight. Often times, preparing your child on what to expect at the airport can also help to alleviate anxi ety. The Exceptional Family Member Prog ram (EFMP) has arranged a “Come Fly with Me” day at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam (JBPHH) on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. The Air Force is setting up a special time for our Exceptional Family Member (EFM) Families to prac tice going through the check-in and Transportation Security Administration screening process. If they have an available aircr aft that morning, they may also allow Families to practice walk ing onto the plane, and getting settled into their seats. We hope that this practice session will help alleviate some anxiety and stres s for the Families on the day of the move.
Come Fly with EFMP
Meet us at Hickam Air Force Base for a mock flight to prepare your Exceptional Family Member for flyin g. We will walk through the check-in process, going through TSA, and if we are lucky, sit on an aircraft! Mar 20 • 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Registration Deadline: March 19, 2019 Go on-line at HiMWR.com/ACScalendar or call (808) 655-4227 and ask to speak with a representative in EFMP. NOTE: Motorized wheelchairs will not be allowed onto the bus.
