ACS is here to provide quality support services, various training and education to our Army community of Soldiers, Families, Civilians and Retirees stationed on Oahu.

Join ACS for fun, games, activities, and prizes while promoting summer safety! Wednesday, May 10th, 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Schofield Barracks ACS, Bldg. 2091

Building 2091 Schofield Barracks 655-4ACS (4227)

Dear Tina, I noticed that my 2 year old son is not talking like my friends’ kids. I’m worried, but some people told me that it’s because he is learning two languages. My first language is Spanish and I mostly speak that to him. My husband only speaks English to him. Is that ok? Signed, Bilingual Bri

Discover Hawaii May 2017

Dear Bilingual Bri, First I would like to assure you that it IS okay for your son to be learning two languages, and even beneficial. Aside from the obvious benefits for his future in the job market, studies have shown some cognitive advantages. Whether or not learning multiple languages simultaneously causes initial, temporary speech delays is debated. Most reliable sources seem to agree that minor lags in language milestones are common, however significant lag should be investigated further. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a two year old should be able to speak at least 25 words. If your child is learning two languages, you would count the combined total words from both languages. It is always a good idea to check with your son’s pediatrician if you have concerns. If you suspect your child may have speech delays, the State of Hawaii Department of Health provides free assessments and Early Intervention Services, should your son require them. The referral line for Oahu is (808) 594-0066. As always, you are welcome to call us here at the New Parent Support Program for further information and support. Best wishes, Tina

CAREER FAIR

May 3 • 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Nehelani Conference & Banquet Center Schofield Barracks

Army Community Service (ACS) Employment Readiness Program (ERP) and Soldier for Life (SFL) Transition Assistance Program (TAP) are hosting a Career Fair at Schofield Barracks. The Career Fair will be open to all transitioning service members, spouses of service members, DoD civilians and family members. Over 75 local and mainland companies will be represented at the Career Fair and they are hiring! Call ACS ERP for more information, (808) 655-4227.

CAREER FAIR TIPS 1. DO YOUR HOMEWORK: See which companies are hiring people with your skill set and then make an effort to visit those

recruiters first while you’re still fresh and have copies of your resume available. Bring a highlighter or pen with you to mark the places you need to visit first. You should also mark off the companies that you speak to, so that you can remember to follow-up after the event.

2. PLAN YOUR ROUTE: Review the layout with locations of the companies you would like to visit. Plan your route and if there is a long wait at one employer go on to the next employer on your list. You can always track back to visit with an employer you missed earlier. Remember you are always being observed at a Career Fair.

3. ARRIVE EARLY: Recruiters are at their best at the beginning of the job fair, too, so plan to arrive when the event begins to

attract the most attention. Be prepared to answer some brief interview questions on the spot or fill out applications for some employers.

4. BRING EXTRA COPIES OF YOUR RESUME: Even though you have target companies that you’ll want to visit, bring extra copies of your resume in case you see an employer or position opening that appeals to you the day of the job fair. You don’t need to hand out your resume aimlessly, but bring at least a dozen extra copies above what you need for your target companies.

5. PRACTICE YOUR ELEVATOR SPEECH: You should have a 30 second or less pitch about who you are and what skill sets you would offer to the employer.

6. JUST SAY NO TO GIVEAWAYS: It’s perfectly acceptable to take some company literature if you’re interested in a company, but try to stay away from taking giveaways and extra items from all of the employers. These items weigh you down and make it difficult for you to conclude a conversation with a firm handshake.

7. FOLLOW UP WITHIN 48 HOURS: Recruiters meet lots of candidates at job fairs. If you want to set yourself apart from the competition, take business cards and send thank you e-mails after the event. In your e-mail, you should reference when and where you met and the position that interests you. Don’t forget to update your LinkedIn profile and request connections from the employers that interest you!

The ACS Employment Readiness Program can assist you plan your job search, create a LinkedIn profile, learn networking tips, review your resume, and polish your interviewing skills. Skilled counselors are certified to coach you, and help write your federal resume. We have an office full of resources available to make your job search successful.
