Dear Tina: My baby seems fussier than other babies. I have been told that she is “gassy” and that the gas relief drops work really well. At the same time, my husband thought he heard from a pediatrician that the drops were a waste of money. My husband feels that our little girl is perfectly normal and that I have set my expectations (of how much a baby cries) too high . . . or, in this case, too low. Please help. Modern Mom Dear Modern Mom,

Dear Tina

Answers questions for parents who are expecting or have young children age 0 to 3 years old. Tina is a registered nurse, certified breastfeeding specialist, certified infant massage instructor, educator and home visitor with the ACS, New Parent Support Program (NPSP). Submit questions to deartinahawaii@gmail.com or stop by ACS, Schofield Barracks.

Being unable to soothe your crying baby can be very stressful for parents. If only they could tell us what’s wrong! You are certainly not alone. Many babies cry much more than expected and often times it is still within the range of normal. I’m not sure how old your baby is, but it may be helpful to know that most newborns cry between one to three hours per day. It is their way of telling you they have a need, blocking out unwanted stimulation, or releasing tension. If your baby cries for more than three hours per day please do consult your pediatrician. It’s always best to rule out health issues. I also encourage you to contact us here at New Parent Support Program (NPSP). We are a professional team of nurses and social workers and can assist you with comfort techniques and with learning to read your baby’s cues. It is important to understand that, for most babies, the amount of crying each day will begin to increase after two weeks and peak around 2 months of age. You should notice it has decreased quite a bit by four or five months. Sometimes the crying will continue when you have done everything possible to meet their needs and to comfort them. This is can be a phenomenon called the Period of Purple Crying. We at NPSP can provide you with more information on this. The most important thing to understand is that it is normal to feel frustrated at times, but no matter how bad it gets you can never shake your baby. They have weak neck muscles and proportionately large heads. Even what may seem like insignificant force can cause permanent brain damage and even death. If you feel frustrated please place your baby in a safe place (i.e. the crib) and take a break for a few minutes. Again, please feel free to call us here at the New Parent Support Program, 808-655-4ACS. Best wishes, Tina
