hen I saw the idea about the best 4th of July memory, I had one that still makes the entire family smile when we mention it. It was the summer of our first deployment and we were living in Texas. The war had just started and they had put a stop on all R&R dates. Unfortunately we didn’t know that before we planned a month-long vacation to his parents in California. We had hoped that his R&R dates could be scheduled in the time we would be there. The girls and I flew out and explained to his family that it looked like he was not going to make it. His family was sad not to get to see him, but also upset because we had planned on celebrating my youngest child’s 1st birthday late so he could be there too. I threw together a really big party plan and went ahead with it so everyone could meet the “baby” and we could still enjoy all the fun. My brother and sister-in-law were performing with an orchestra for the 4th of July weekend so we piggybacked on that event to entice more people to come. Everyone in his family came to see us and attend the fireworks on July 4th and concert on the 5th. Word came in late on the 2nd that my husband was on his way. I was thrilled. Unfortunately he would arrive on July 4th while we were scheduled to watch fireworks. If we waited around for him we would not get to attend the event. I took the bet that my husband would want to take a shower, rest and not want to be around crowds that night so we went to the event and I hid a key for him when he got there. We had the best night. My girls danced to patriotic music and saw their first fireworks show. It was perfect! When we got home I was the first to rush into the house so I could catch everyone’s reaction to him already in the house and to be sure he didn’t get beat up by someone thinking he was a robber. Everyone was in tears and screaming with joy! The best part came the next day when the extended family came to the picnic birthday celebration. There wasn’t a dry eye in the park! It was such an honor to see all the veterans coming up and shaking his hand and all the joy on everyone’s faces. That was a true blessing that weekend and we are still grateful for each safe return after that one. - Criztina Jean 2
