Whether you dig an old school grass roots style of motocross or you are looking to see something new and unique, the 2014 FIM Motocross World Championship calendar has all the bases covered. It is not called the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; championship for nothing and the proof is in the pudding with all three opening rounds taking place outside of Europe.

The season opener in Qatar will set the stage for the series as it prepares to redefine the word “epic”. Much like last year, the race will be held on a Saturday evening in the floodlit arena of the Losail circuit though while last year was nothing short of spectacular this year we can expect even more. Loket in the Czech Republic is another golden oldie on the calendar which will hold round fifteen, while round sixteen moves to the ‘motocross capital’ Belgium with the ven-

Although The Ukraine has a solid history of motocross, hosting multiple European Championship and MX3 World Championship rounds, this year will be the first time in modern history that the country will host an MXGP round. From there it is all about excitement and as much as we love tradition we also love new arena’s to play in, which leads us to the last two rounds in Brazil and Mexico. Brazil, as always, will be a stand out event with a new track being construct-

ed, following the design cues of Beto Carrero and it is expected that more than 30,000 fans will turn up to see our MXGP stars duke it out. Meanwhile, the grand finale will be held in front of our Mexican “amigos” at a completely new location. The track in Leon will be built inside a huge city park, which is a famous for hosting major sporting events and activities. The track will be located near a lake and the soil used to build the track will have been extracted from the bottom of that lake. To top it all off, the design of the track has been made and approved by the city Leon itself.

Putting it out there

When we talk about factory bikes in Motocross it conjures images of one off specials dripping in hand made parts, fans mutter in hushed tones of race budgets that dwarf the dreams of mortal MX riders and innovations that will hopefully trickle down to the bikes we can buy in the years to come. On the other hand when we talk of TV the view is a bit more simplistic, get a camera, get a satellite or Ethernet cable and send it to a

station, right? Not quite. We’d actually be better of using the sort of words that we reserve to describe exotic race machines for TV as the pace of development in broadcasting in the last 10 years has accelerated well beyond that of the bikes that it is used to cover. First the aspect ratio went WIDE with the change to 16:9, look at any unwanted television

that’s left outside by an ungrateful owner nowadays and though it may only be 8 years old, by today’s standards it is a clunky grey box from the dark ages. Then we went HD and all went out and bought a new TV that could support the format, but before long that was only half the story as 3D became the standard to strive towards and now even that is not enough for the manufacturers. With 4K being pushed to become the home

viewing standard in the next 5 years there is a whole new avenue for broadcasting opening up that goes above and beyond what even 3D can offer. All those are the bits that the consumer sees, behind the scenes there has been a sea change in the technology that is needed to provide the signals and content to satisfy and explore the capabilities of the fast changing consumer market. Youthstream jumped in to the middle with LIVE Motocross since its beginnings and it has been a rapid acceleration ever since. 2013 was a landmark year for the Motocross World championship with the infrastructure for

live tapeless HD broadcast in place after years of investment, a revamped magazine programme in HD using the latest camera technology, a new outside broadcast truck and live TV graphics that could begin to tap the extra screen capacity of the HD signal. The investment paid off, not just for you the viewer in terms of the clarity and content of the programmes you watched but also in the worldwide reach of the Motocross World Championship. Overall there were 2006 extra hours of MXGP on worldwide TV in 2013 that thanks to our varied broadcasters had a potential viewer total of 219 Million people at any one time. Figures that gave MXGP a potential

The reach of the networks and their interest in MXGP is in direct correlation to the investments made in the best and latest broadcast standard equipment and technology and with the World Championship moving East to the Qatar and Thai Grand Prix there was an explosion of coverage in south east Asia through Pan Asian broadcasters.

More impressive was that the Qatar season opener had the season’s joint highest viewing figures around the world, with the flood lit race sharing the spot with the classic event of Loket and the return of the Finish GP the diversity of the Championship and the TV coverage really shows. Far from resting on its laurels for 2014, the TV production will take another step with a huge increase in the number of Cameras covering the races, Ioannis Nikolaidis Youthstream’s TV Executive Manager can explain it best. “We will have in total 12 RF signals this year. #1 is our usual RF CAM, #2 will be the “drag way” camera which last years tests proved were ac-

We do believe that with all these new views the home viewer will have a more LIVE coverage than ever.” At each Grand Prix these cameras and the now standard HD track feed cameras will provide the networks and fans with 2 hours of the MXGP class, 2 hours of MX2 racing and at the MXoN 2 full days of action. There will also be full coverage online as MXLIFE.tv morphs into MXGPTV.COM with all the races streaming live online from their events plus the support-

ing cast of WMX and the full spectrum of EMX Championships. To cap it all off the race by race half hour magazine programme will continue to evolve in 2014 with more cameras bringing all the best bits of the weekend’s action and intrigue to the audience straight after the GP, with insider titbits, rider interviews, unique race highlights and comprehensive news coverage from inside the MXGP paddock. It is all about making the most of the technology available and with TV continuing to evolve and shift year by year, the Motocross World Championship is investing and growing to stay on the peak of the curve.

Lights the way for our talented young stars

There are a lot of important decisions to be made in young riders careers that, as much as we hate to say it, can ultimately make or break them in the long run. In order to take some of the pressure off parents by minimizing career guesswork, Youthstream created the MXGP Academy, a program designed to develop and guide young riders towards realizing and achieving their motocross dreams.

As mentioned in the previous issue of the MXGP Mag the MXGP Academy will be led by two-time Motocross World Champion John Van Den Berk and fitness expert Jan Postema. Using their combined accomplishments and industry inside knowledge they have come up with the ultimate program to maximize the potential of the next generation both on and off the track.

Riders can now enroll in the MXGP Academy’s winter training program to be held in the south of Spain where they will train under the watchful eyes of Jan and John. The winter program began on December the 23rd and will run through to March 1st in week long blocks. Thanks to the support of KTM, the MXGP Academy has multiple ‘ready to race’ KTM SX65, SX85, SX125 and 250SX-F bikes

available for the riders to train on. In addition to the invaluable knowledge and world class advice the riders will be given, they may also be get the chance to meet and ride with MXGP stars such as two-time MX2 World Champion Jeffrey Herlings and last years MX2 bronze medalist José Butrón.

FIM Asia Elections

On the 11th of December 2013 a new wave rode its way through the general assembly of the FIM Asia as the scheduled elections revealed a see change in the governance of motorcycle sport in the Asia Pacific region. The assembly in Kuala Lumpur called together 24 national members of the federation, as well as the latest addition the Oman Motorcycle Federation, to vote for the President and Vice Presidents of the Federation for the next term of office. Fittingly the election was a victory for Mr Wan Ahamed Zaharuddin of Malaysia who will be ably supported in his first term as president by three newly elected vice presidents representing the full spectrum of the Federation.

For Asian motocross fans there is good news as he has experience of creating tracks to FIM international standards for the Lebanese Motocross Championship where he worked closely with the second man elected to the vice presidency Mr Ali Dagher.

Four times a World Champion, Harry Everts the racer wrote some of the very best pages of Belgian Motocross History way before he gave the sport another huge champion in his son. The father of Stefan, the greatest Motocross rider in the history of the World Championship, Harry had to work harder than anyone to reach the highest level. A task he has never shied away from and that dedication and passion for the sport continues today at 61 years of age, as he shares his experience with new young riders. Born on the 6th of February 1952, Harry had to fight on his hands from day one as he had early physical troubles that required repeated surgery before he could even walk normally. Perhaps it was in that formative time that he forged his legendary obstinacy, a trait that helped him to overcome obstacles that any other might
