SOUL

Northern S Northern Soul is a music and dance movement emerged in Northern England in the late 1960’s from the particualr British mod scene, based on a particular style of black American soul music, especially from the mid-1960’s, with a heavy beat and fast tempo. During the 60s and 70s, a generation of men and women across the Northern towns of England felt that the move from American recording studios away from the fast and exciting soul of the mid 60s towards newer genres such as funk and disco wasn’t for them, and they went out in search of lost gems of rapid, danceable music to party away to on a Saturday night. Night times for Northern soul lovers would consist of them dancing the night away, unlike today’s generation where you can find your favourite song at the touch of a button these soul music lovers would only ever hear the majority of their favourite songs in their local clubs. Northern soul nights are still incredibley popular today, with the Brighton beach held in in Leeds and Manchester. With new trends and subcultures emerged Northern Soul was always in the background and will carry on to be a part of Northern culture and what they do best.

6

Soul In the early days of Northern soul nights, the threads tended to follow a similar pattern to the Mod nights - sharp, button tailored Ben Shermans. However the further along the nights became wilder and revellers didn’t want to ruin their expensive clothes so fashion became more functional, wide leg fitting trousers and t-shirts. However the change in fashion became more of a subculture with the use of sew-on badges and patches to show that you were part of a group, many emblazoned with the now infamous “Keep the Faith” slogan with a black gloved hand punching up into the air.

Concept

To show the connection between family and Northern Soul through visiting a brother and sisters favourite places in Sheffield to celebrate Sheffields street style whilst referring to Northern Soul. With a narrative of showcasing a sibling bond walking and exploring Sheffield with the influence of Northern soul references all around them, including visiting record stores, restaurants and public locations.

8

Being a part of a dance society, like Northern soul was, there was a strong connection to being a part of a family, hence why the concept of this is family and how there’s no stronger connection.

“I’d heard a lot of Motown and Stax when I was a kid, but the more well-known end of it. On jam tours, we had a DJ called Ady Croasdell who ran a 60’s club. He turned me on to underground stuff and what people call Northern Soul. It just blew my mind.” - Paul Weller

phy Photography inspiration came from two different photographers, Malian Rose and Barbara Anastacio. The shot she did with RJ King have large areas of bright colours and inspiration has been taken from this with the outfit that Katie is wearing being bright red. Anastacio also likes to play with different angles and thats where some of our shots have come from being taken from on the floor and straight on. Some of our photos are off centre and cadid and this is becasue we wanted some of them to be quite playful and to also fit with our concept of family. Some of our more posing photos is taken from Roses shots, such as the portrait images of Katie and Joe with sunglasses and playing around with the focusing on them to create a cool look.

“What we were doing back then, was rewriting the rules of being white and working class. We knew exactly what it meant to dance to black music in the era of the National Front and the racist standup comedian. Ours was a rebellion against pub culture, shit music and leery sexist nightclubs. Our weapon was obscure vinyl, made by black kids nobody had ever heard of. - Paul Mason

MUAH

Make-up and hair we both thought we would keep to a minimum as we wanted a relaxed photoshoot, for Katies look we chose natural curly hair and very limited make-up, more an every day look. We chose this so it wouldn’t take away from the outfits we had chosen for her.

katie joe Make-up and hair we both thought we would keep to a minimum as we wanted a relaxed photoshoot, for Joes look we chose natural unstyled hair and and no makeup, more an every day look. We chose this so it wouldn’t take away from the outfits we had chosen for him.

details For styling we kept some traditional traits within our outfit choices. Joe’s outfit choice including badges and pins to represent the patches that Soul lovers would sew onto their jackets. Katie is weaing wide leg corduroy jeans that links to the wide leg oxford trousers they would dance in for free movement. 21
