MYAH EMILY HATFIELD 2019-2021

ABOUT MYAH I’m Myah Hatfield, a junior in interior design at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts. I am from mid-coast Maine and grew up in an artistic and musical family. I love sketching design ideas and find I can show my ideas through that process better. I have been designing and taking on projects from a young age, whether it was drawing ideas of a dream house or building a lofted space in my house. My favorite part of design is how people interact with it. I love how object placement, color, size, or ceiling height can change a space completely. I always want to design for human comfort and experience.

A MIXED USE RESIDENCE ON BEACON HILL

VISTA BEACON The first assignment was to create a mixed use space with public shops and amenities for the residents on the first floor of the building. We were able to pick the shops that we added based off of our research of the demographic and area. For my project I included a cafe with outdoor seating, a small book store connected to the cafe, and a flower shop for events as well as a flower stand in the lobby for everyday purchases. The second part of the assignment was to create a client backstory and design an apartment to fit their needs and life stlye. For both the ammenities and residences areas, my focus was on mixing the historical architecture and details of Beacon Hill with new modern furniture pieces and designs.

The Concept The concept of my mix-use residential building was to create a space that acts as a gateway from the historic Beacon Hill to the modern city. This was be achieved through light washes of color and modern furniture in a space with classic casework and details. The organization of the space also reflected the mix of old and new by creating small clustered area in the front of the building and open up as you get closer to the back, facing the river. This mimiced the tighter clusters in the older parts of the city such as Beacon Hill and the taller brighter modern parts of the city.

PLAN PROGRESSION AND DIAGRAMS When planning the diagrams I wanted to separate the public and more private areas for residents. By having the lobby act as security to the residents areas of the building. I was also thinking about my concept and wanting to make clustered and open spaces throughout. The public area in the front of the building is open with tall ceilings but the added darker color on the walls and ceiling create an intimate sense to the space.

DETAILS These sketches are of the cafe and book store area. I was playing with different ways to separate the space without having it fully walled off. I was also looking at ways to add the flowers in to the design in the bottom sketches but decided It was to much and was slipping to far from my concept for the space. The detail profiles shown are of the custom wainscoting and molding that is showcased throughout the space, and featured in the ceiling coffers in most rooms.

DETAILS AND SECTIONS The plan for the amenities and retail section of the 170 Charles St. building separates the public from the more private amenities for residents which can be shown in the circulation diagram. The floor plan, moving back in to the space, becomes less clustered and opens up in to the music area. The lobby offers a grab and go floral stand to add a convenience to an everyday luxury. The combined cafe and bookstore offers outdoor seating in the court yard. The florist shop and the cafe have access to the back door for deliveries. The clustered work spaces and semi clustered lounge is then compressed in the hall to open fully in the music and kitchen area. The finish plan helped me to see how the materials create a really cohesive space. The pebble tarrazo acts as an abstracted flower petal pattern that leads you from the entry and flower stand back to the flower shop and consulting office in the back. The cafe and book store are the only part of the public section with wood flooring making the area warer and inviting from a cool tones lobby.

APARTMENT 306

ABOUT THE CLIENT Julie and James are a working couple ages 35 and 37 who met 5 years ago on a delayed flight from London to South Africa where they were both traveling for work. They have spent their pre-Covid years working around the world with James’ job with doctors without border, and Julie has been writing blogs and short stories throughout their travels. James was hired by Mass General Hospital at the beginning of 2020 after his 5-year contract with Doctors Without Boarders and the two are planning on settling down and excited to have found an apartment so close to James’ work but also not somewhere that is away from downtown. Now that they are living in Boston full-time, they have adopted a corgi that they named Romie. They are happy to be able to settle into an apartment andreally make it feel like home. Their style was influenced by their travels, but Julie wants a more minimal place to be in while she writes at home. Elements and memories of their travels are very important to them but now that they are settling down, they are also excited to experience a more authentic Boston style.

THE CONCEPT The concept of the two bedroom apartment for James and Julie will be to create a calm place to escape from the business of the city. The space will be inviting, warm, sophisticated, and personalized. By having the living room be the focal point when entering the space, it gives an immediate scene of comfort and draws you into the home. There will be multiple built-in shelves to showcase their collected items that will add an additional layer that at home feeling. Overall, the special organization will create areas separating private, common, and work.

PLANING AND DIAGRAMS With the program we were given, I wanted to add an office for Julie, as she will be working from home, pandemic or not. In the first set I played around with the entry and where the office was placed. In the second set I was more sure of the lay out so I made a fictional diagram. The most important part of the second bubble to me was the location of the office to separate work and home life.

MATERIALS For the materials, I wanted to keep a neutral warm pallet. The shades of peach and orange are spread throughout the space and are contrasted with dark wood accents. The pops of bright colors and tiles are placed throughout the space to add a stimulating energy. There are also contrasting colors in the primary bath. The cool green and black create an oasis with in the apartment. Over all the materials are soft, warm, and inviting.

A TRANSITION HOME FOR HOMELESS YOUTH

HOPE HOME The assignment given to us was to create a transition home for homeless teens in the Boston area. After we did research on many other homes in the Boston area and learrned about the facilities they offer, I knew that I wanted to provide as many facilities and opportunities for these teens as possible. Thinking about the hardships many of these teens have been through and how what they really need is their family to accept them and help their journey. Their family has left them to deal them selves, often making their situation worse. What these kids need is a family and a place to grow so they can be the person they want to be. My central idea of the design is to make not just a house but a home where a support structure exists that pushes everyone to their fullest potential with love and hope, and never giving up on anyone for any reason.

The Concept

The concept of the transition house is to help the young homeless population of Boston to grow and re-imagine their lives through access to help and resources. The design of the space allows the residents to feel at home bringing a feeling of a support structure and family that they need to have whether it is to fight addiction or to get their feet back under them. The home will bring in elements of nature using different wood tones and rough edges, as well as soft bright colors such as yellow and orange to bring joy and light to the space. There will also be a focus of warmth with the materials adding in darker oranges and reds to make it welcoming. The warm colors will be balanced with cooler greens to help with the vision of growth and to contribute to the earth tones of the space. As well as using earth tones and warm colors, the raw materials of the space will be kept by blending the metal beams with wood, using stainless steel appliances, and keeping the red brick throughout the space.

MIND MAP AND DIAGRAMS The mind map was where I started to find the concept for this project. I found out the most important aspects and needs for the transition home through researching homeless shelters in boston and what the better facilities offered. From there, I looked at what helpful resources teen with potential trauma would need to get back on their feet. My map outlines a more psychological side, where, rater then the exact resourses provided, it shows what the residance of the home would be working towards and get out of comimg to the Hope Home.

PODS The pods are designed to be their own space for each client. Each pod has a full size bed, closet with mirror, shelves, fold down desk, stool that fits right in the bottom shelf, and an outlet. The pods also each have a black board for the ability to express them selves through art and make the pod their own or to simply write their name. Each of the pods face out to the hall and the majority of those pods face windows making the space mostly naturally lit. However, there are both lights in the halls of pods and in each intividual pod.

DESIGN SHOWDOWN

RESTAURANT PROJECT NORI Nori was designed as a place for everone, whether they are looking for a fancy restaurant or a grab and go market. The focus throughout the project was to create different enough spaces in the restaurant while keeping the design cohesive and strong. While pulling from Japanese patterns and culture the restaurant also has a nod to the history. The restaurant was split in to the market, the sushi bar, and the formal dining. Each of these locations was highlighted with different ceiling features and hights to differentiate the spaces. The name Nori came from the idea of a common thread holding one thing together. In sushi rolls, nori is the seaweed wrap that holds each component together. In the design the bold patterns and rich colors of Nori pull together the restaurant.

The Concept The concept for designing Nori, is to create a restaurant with different dining experiences, including a market, sushi bar, and formal dining. This will relate to the sushi markets in Japan before WWII, the creative exploration in sushi, and finally the western influence on sushi when it expanded out of Japan. This will be created by color and material differences in each section, as well as different menus and food in each section. The restaurant will be kept harmonious by keeping common patterns and pops of color though out.

CEILINGS The Market was inspired by the sushi markets in Japan before World War II. The ceiling took inspiration from that as well, keeping the lanterns and using fabric drapes to resemble the canopies for each market tent that lined the streets.

The ceiling over that bar came from Japanese Makisu, or the mats that you use to roll sushi with. This added a detail to the ceiling as well as the availability for acoustic absorption.

When designing the downstairs of Nori. the challenge was to add more light materials with still keeping the darkness of the space. The pattern to the left is a common Japanese textile pattern that I made three dimensional to transform the room and was made from thin wood to keep the light and natural colors in the space.

DIAGRAMS When diagramming the space I was focused on how to separate each of the three areas as best I could within the narrow space. In the evolution from the bubble diagram to the functional diagram you can see how my ideas for the layout changed. The end result is very close to the final floor plan. The layout allows the costumer to have the experience they want without having to go through one of the other spaces, and while they are not completely sectioned off, they are designed as drastically different zones of the space.

IN THE FIELD RESIDENTIAL

BOCA GRANDE HOUSE The Boca Grande House was a project that I finalized floor plans and picked furniture for a clients house and guest house in Boca Grande, Florida, during my summer internship at Martha Coolidge Design. The project was different than anything I had done before and I learned a lot about residential design and working in a design team for a client. I meet with and presented to our client as well as effectively communicated through email and phone calls. The Boca Grande House is a bright and beach style house with a mix of modern and traditional elements. The colors a both modern and neutral as well as having bright colors that go well in bright Florida houses.

THE SITE The house is located right off of the beach, the large windows around the house make the best of the view as well as the porches and balconies. There is also a smaller guest house that has the same views of the water. The guest house has a much more relaxed beach design on the interior where the main house connects to the out-doors though the colors.
