The Secretariat Building Photo by Ethan

Mysterious Places in Yangon MYANMORE If you are an expat living here, there may be times that you have to host your visiting guests. Besides the usual tourist destinations, you may ignite the sense of exploration with a visit to these mysterious places in Yangon.  THE SECRETARIAT BUILDING (THE MINISTERS’ BUILDING) Open to the public once a year, on Martyr’s Day, the Secretariat, stands as one of the most historically significant buildings of the former capital. It is here that in July 1947 General Aung San and 6 of his cabinet ministers were assassinated by the henchmen of a rival politician. Inside, the public is allowed to see the room where the assassination took place. The victorian-style building is currently being renovated and will in the future house restaurants and a museum. Secretariat Building - Maha Bandula Road, Botahtaung Township, Yangon

 ANCIENT PORTUGUESE CHURCH Thanlyin was the home base of Portuguese mercenary Philip de Brito, who declared independence from his Rakhine masters in 1603 and was impaled in 1613 after Burmese king Anaukpetlun had recaptured the city. De Brito received this special treatment for offences against Buddhism. In an audacious move, De Brito had stolen de Dhammazedi bell from Shwedagon. De Brito’s tomb can be found in the ruins of the “Portuguese” church, built in 1749 by an Italian missionary. The roof is missing, but the walls of the church still stand tall. The area is leafy and some colonial houses can be found nearby. If you are looking for a pleasant escape from the city, this is it. Ancient Portuguese Church - Thanlyin

 ABANDONED AMUSEMENT PARK YANGON Located near Yangon Zoological Gardens, the Amusement park was opened in 1998 and closed around 2012. Inside, there were a lot of rides and games such as merry-go-rounds, roller coaster, twister, motor boat, air balloon, indoor computer games and bumping cars. However, this 10acre land is now closed to the public. The government has recently called for tender for the renovation of this themed park. Abandoned Amusement Park - Bo Min Yaung Street, Mingalar Taung Nyunt Township, Near Yangon Zoological Garden

 CHIN TSONG PALACE (CHIN CHONG NANDAW) If you enter the compound through the gate half hidden under the flyover at the Kabar Aye and University Avenue junction, you will find out. Lim Chin Tsong Palace was built by a Burmese tycoon who made his fortune in exporting oil, rice and rubber in colonial times. Not all good things last, though. Lim Chin Tsong died broke, in 1923, after his fortunes took a turn for the worst. His coffin was reportedly lined with debt records. One room is being used to teach geography to arts students, another to showcases paintings and antiques. Apparently, a full fledged renovation is on the cards. Chin Tsong Palace - Kabar Aye Pagoda Road, Mayangon Township, Yangon

 PEGU CLUB Once one of the most popular gentlemen’s clubs in Southeast Asia, Pegu Club has a longstanding history, dated back to 1885. It was the birthplace of the renowned Pegu Cocktail, the club’s signature drink.Though the club is now abandoned and in a broken down state, the architecture and structure are still fascinating to watch. Address: Pegu Club, Zagawar Road (near Taw Win Centre), Dagon Township, Yangon.

Boat Noodle Myanmar: Are you up for stack up challenge? BY ANIK NYEIN If you’re a Thai Food enthusiast or just in the mood for some Thai, you’re in luck. Boat Noodle Myanmar, opened in late October, on the ground floor of Dagon Center brings you the famous boat noodle dish along with other Thai favorites to Yangon. The atmosphere gives a youthful, lively but also chill feeling with cool graffiti paintings by talented local artist Arker Kyaw and team---best for your Instagram photos. As the name suggests, the highlight of the shop is Pathumthani Boat Noodle (720 ks), one of the most popular street dishes in Thailand. The boat noodle comes in two options; with chicken or pork and two types of noodles to choose from; rice noodle or egg noodle. Don’t be surprised by the small portion, as the idea of eating boat noodle is that you have to stack up the bowl as high as possible. You can make a little competition with your friends on who can eat the most. We also went on to try Som Tum (2,400 Ks), which was a papaya salad. Fear not, Som Tum here is packed with flavors but not too spicy to bear It would not be complete for Thai street food tour without trying Kra Pow Rice (Pork or Chicken) for 3,500 ks. The pork or chicken is cooked with basil in thick oyster sauce, perfect to go with rice. If you’re feeling thirsty, try Cha Yen (Thai Iced Tea) (2,500 ks). It’s not too sweet and full of tea flavor and end the meal with either Sangkaya Steamed Bread (2,200 ks) or Ka Nam Tuay (1pc /300ks) for desserts. Boat Noodle is certainly a new hangout place with decent food and reasonable prices for social media generation. Address: Dagon Centre I, Yangon Open Hours: 10am to 10pm, Everyday

Welcome the Winter with Epicurean Treats at Sushi Tei MYANMORE

The exclusive epicurean menu at Sushi Tei sees the specialities in its ingredients to warm you up in this chilly season. Total 20 menu have been delicately selected for the restaurant’s first seasonal menu. The varieties of the menu ranges from sashimi, sushi, rolls, salad, teppanyaki, ramen, don and nabe. We have first munched on “Unagi Kiwi Roll” which is eel and cucumber sushi roll topped with Kiwi (9,900 ks). The kiwi gives a pleasant addition to the taste of the roll. Though we may not prefer the cucumber in our sushi, this one does not have a strong cucumber taste which brings out the taste of the eel. This second dish is highly recommended, as it’s only seasonal, which is “Tako Wasabi” or raw octopus with wasabi (4,900 ks). For those who are not a big fan of wasabi, fear not, tako wasabi will not make you shed a tear. It ,in fact, perfectly blends well with raw octopus. Next on the line is the highlight of the meal “Tan Tan Nabe,” traditional Sumo Hot Pot in Sichaun style. As the name suggests, it is a hot pot with specially made Sichaun vegetable and soup that comes with a bit of spice to suit with local taste bud. This portion is generous enough that you can share with 2-3 people. Drink some warm soup amidst the cool weather is definitely a must for winter. Deep fried fan will be excited with Golden soft shell crab (12,500 ks), deep fried soft shell crab with salted egg sauce. The trick to eating this one is one must eat as soon as it’s served. Last but not least, another special item on the menu is Sanma Shio/Teriyaki, grilled pacific saury with salt or teriyaki sauce (7,500 ks). It may look like saba fish (grilled mackerel) but the taste is slightly different. To top the experience, we ended with sake jelly (12,000 ks), leaving sweet and refreshing feel. Address: 126 Dhamazedi Road Yangon Phone: 09 44411 5662 Opening hours: 10:00AM - 10:00PM
