Best Live Music VENUES BY MATT One of the most frequently-asked questions I encounter after I tell people I work for Myanmore is where to go for live bands in Yangon. To answer this question, we have come up with this guide to live bands. Before we go into that, here’s a list of famous live bands (in no particular order) in Yangon. Where’s Charlie? Bamboo Trio The Four Live Band Edogawa Township Velvet Avenue - 70's 80's 90's Live Band LNR Band - Live! Live Band 'SOS’ These bands go around several bars and restaurants in town to perform. You can catch them at these places: ATLAS ROOFTOP BAR & LOUNGE Atlas is one of the best-viewed rooftop bars in town which reopened a few week ago. Atlas has Jazz Under the Stars on Wednesday by The Bamboo Trio and on Saturdays, they have Where’s Charlie? with beautiful view above from the city. Jin Hotpot: Taiwanese Style Hotpot with Fresh Sauces BY NATTY TANGMEESANG On the ground floor of Urban Asia Center, Jin Hotpot joins the growing trend of restaurants and bars in the building. To make it easier for you to locate, it’s only a bit further down from the popular 7th joint bar on 47th street. Decorated in modern setting with yellow lighting, giving warm feeling, one side of the wall is painted with waterfall image. We might be familiar of hotpot as a sharing meal, but at Jin Hotpot, each person will get one’s own individual pot and USB sockets to charge your phone while having hotpot. The menu is divided into the main set, soup base, rice and noodle, vegetable, meat, and ingredients of hotpot. Do not be confused by it. If you order the meat set menu (from 11,800 kyats for premium pork – 18,800 kyats for seafood), in which you can order only one type of meat, the set comes with a vegetable plate, one type of soup, and a choice of rice or noodle without having to pay extra. The set is suitable for one person. If you would like to share, there will be an extra charge of 4,000 kyats/person. For the first timer, we would like to recommend the premium pork set or rib eyes beef set for the meat with pork broth that will turn sweet once cooked. For the rice, you should try Taiwan Pork Rice, which is sautéed minced-pork in sweet sauce on top of rice. Asides from the set, each order will get a small fried chicken served with chicken powder as a complimentary dish along with three kind of marinated sour vegetable as a side dish. The main factor that sets Jin Hotpot from others is the varieties of fresh sauce. The star, for us, is the fresh sauce—Asian style, mixture of flavors with sour taste lead. The second favorite for us is the Thai style sauce, but if you prefer the simple ones, they also have soy sauce and vinegar. For the drinks, Jin offers three unlimited drinks: water, sunflower juice, and punch. They will also serve you with infused water. After the meal, we were served with three slices of lime coated with sugar as a dessert to help digestion. The Beat Bar : Cool Beat + Chill Vibe BY ANIK NYEIN Amidst the bustling Mahabandoola Road, The Beat Bar is sure to calm you down with their upbeat music and friendly atmosphere. The concept of the bar revolves around the music—different genres of music ranging from reggae to rock and international hits. It’s also seen in the decoration where instruments such as banjos or trumpets and music signs such as G Clef or music notes are put up on the wall along with whiskey bottles as light bulbs. All the decorations are handmade by The Beat team. The bar is divided into smoking upstairs and downstairs for non-smokers. Asian cuisine dominates the menu (a mixture of Burmese and Thai) but there are also Western options. The Beat’s Special (15,000 kyats) is a must order, enough for three people: a combination of grilled pork neck, mushed dry-venison, crispy-fried chicken and prawn tempera. Another special - chicken feet soup of with bitter leaves (4,000 kyats) was sour at first and the bitter and spicy taste kicked in later. It is also good for the liver, so be sure to order this before you get your drink on. The Beat’s Tropical Coconut Cocktail (6,000 kyats) is sweet and sure to get you tipsy. Aside from cocktails, the bar offers a wide selection of Australian wine, whiskey, and beer. They have live bands every Friday and Saturday, playing rock, pop and reggae.
