Fun things to do on a public holiday BY KHIN HSU MON Myanmar enjoys two public holidays this month: Martyr’s Day on Thursday, July 19 and the Full Moon Day of Waso— the beginning of ‘Buddhist Lent’—on Friday, July 27. One-day holidays speed by so quickly that you can often squander the time off thinking what to do. Here’s some suggestions to get you prepared. Flying High Ever flown in a dream? At Yangon’s first indoor skydiving center you can make that dream a reality. Indoor Skydiving Yangon—the first such center in the city—charges from 30,000 kyats per two minutes in the wind tunnel for ages 10 and above, and 20,000 kyats per two minutes for ages five to 10. At the location is Ya Kun Restaurant so no need to bring snacks. But before you go, make sure it is safe for you to ‘fly’: people with heart surgery, bad asthma, recent surgery, or people over 250lbs are restricted. Address: 9 Mile, Taw Win Road, Mayangone (Opposite Feel & Taste Restaurant) Hours: 9am-8pm Contact: 09 766 699 222

Dancing can improve your physical and mental health; it’s an art, a universal language, and has zero requirements. To satisfy your dancing needs, book a class at Dance Lab, a studio teaching hip hop, popping animation, locking dance and more. Your Guide to the Month of Waso BY GRACE TUN
Waso is the fourth month of the Myanmar lunar calendar, and the first of three months of monsoon season—Waso, Wakhaung and Tawthalin. It’s just around the corner, and with it comes a Buddhist ceremony, more commonly known as the Waso Thingan Katlupwe (Waso robe offering ceremony). During rainy season, the robes of monks get drenched when they are out receiving alms, and are hard to dry. As a result, the ceremony is held annually in order to donate robes, as well as other necessities, to monks and nuns. The full moon day of Waso, which takes place on July 27 this year, commemorates the day Buddha delivered his first sermon, the Dhammasetkyar. It also marks the beginning of a three-month long Buddhist Lent, which ends with the full moon day of Thadingyut in October. During this lent, monks and nuns devote themselves to study and meditation, away from the commotions of everyday life, and are restricted from leaving their monastery to travel on overnight trips. Many pious Burmese Buddhists follow the Five Precepts more meticulously and perform more good deeds, which includes taking part in the Waso ceremony and offering donations and robes to monks. Moreover, festivals, weddings and feasts are usually prohibited throughout this period of solemnity. You might see more people at pagodas during this time of the year, when it is customary for people to practice religious deeds. In order to participate in the Waso ceremony, people usually visit monasteries and donate robes, or invite nuns and monks to their own homes, where they also offer meals and alms. One of the most revered and celebrated traditions of Myanmar, the Waso ceremony, along with its calming period of self-introspection, is a cultural heritage definitely worth experiencing.
