LOTTE Hotel celebrates first anniversary LOTTE Hotel Yangon celebrates its first anniversary with 30 percent off in its restaurants for all of September. In its Cantonese 14th floor establishment Toh Lim it invited Myanmore to sample a few dishes. Set in a private room with windows overlooking Inya Lake, the experience scored high on extravagance, especially as the plates started to roll out. The marinated pork ear salad with its crunchy cartilage was a an authentic taste, followed by a creamy pumpkin soup with minced chicken. The Sichuan-style dumplings with steamed minced pork dunked in the accompanying spicy dip were a winner, as were the juicy pan-fried chicken and vegetable dumplings. Fun and filling, the deep-fried ‘dragon balls’ (shrimp) served as the precursor to a host of mains. Out of these, the wok fried Mongolian beef which was tossed about by staff on a pan had an almost unbelievably tender texture. This was one of Toh Lim’s “sizzling delights” for US$8. Overall the food had a Chinese trajectory with a couple of stops to Korea and Myanmar on the way, which figures because the hotel is part of South Korea’s goliath Lotte Group and the property is, well, in Myanmar. The spicy noodles were served in a bowl of tentacles, shrimp and other seafood swimming in a hot broth. The sautéed slice fish was simple and tasty, served with a mix of spring onion and ginger, while the braised broccoli and bai ling mushroom was a nice vege addition. Topping off the courses was a plate of sesame balls and some coffee. Lunch sets are US$18 and include an appetizer, soup, main, and dessert. Customers can also choose from six kinds of dum sum for the same price, with an appetizer, soup, and dessert. (All prices are subject to a to 10 percent service charge and 5 percent government tax). Sep 17-23: 30 percent off at Toh Lim (Chinese) Restaurant Sep 24-30: 30 percent off at Poolside Bar & BBQ Customers who spend more than US$50 participate in a weekly lucky draw with prizes such as a one-night stay at the Presidential Suite, onenight stay at the Superior Suite, one-night stay at the premier Lake View Room, one-month fitness center voucher, and food and drink vouchers.

Hawaiian food trend hits Yangon BY MIN YE KYAW Poké (pronounced “POH-keh”), a Hawaiian staple of raw diced fish tossed with rice, vegetables, and sauces has come to Yangon. The healthy dish is not restricted to containing fish at the Poké Bar which opened three weeks ago opposite the new Krispy Kreme at Bahan Township’s Time Link. The small, colorful joint fuses traditional and modern tastes in a menu that offers sets or ‘make-your-own’ Poké options. Owner Daniel Maung who lives in the US has eight sushi franchises in Chicago. He returned to his birthplace of Myanmar to bring Yangon its first Poké eatery, which using his graphic design skills he has decorated in fresh blue and animal stencils. Poké bowls are available with chicken (5,500 kyats), shrimp (6,500 kyats), salmon (9,500 kyats), tuna (10,500 kyats) and tofu (4,500 kyats) along with various sauces such as citrus, spicy aioli, kimchi, volcano (spicier than spicy), sweet teriyaki, sesame ginger and wasabi. Plus the menu comes with a nutrition guide to calculate the calories, which are modest. Address: No.108, Ground floor, Corner of Dhammazedi Road & Link Street, Time Links Shopping Mall, Bahan Township Contact: 09 787 411789 Hours: 10am to 9pm
