Burbrit Taproom A year after opening Myanmar’s first microbrewery, the team behind Burbrit has another haven for craft beer enthusiasts which is nearer to the downtown action than its riverside sister venue in North Dagon Industrial Zone. In design though, the taproom has stayed close to Burbrit Brewery with the continuation of an industrial-themed layout: think sparse space, concrete floor and graffiti flanked by iron-and-glass walls. “It is kind of like a dream come true,” Maung Zaw (one of the founders) said. The space was previously a tea shop which was cleared last year by a restaurateur to build an eatery. When that project fell through, Burbrit moved in and painted on the wall its logo and the two fluttering flags of Myanmar and the United Kingdom, which represent Burbrit’s three founders from Myanmar and one from the UK (Bur for Burmese, Brit for Britain). In their new setting is a garden area covered by an overhead shelter and a non-smoking sports room with table football, darts and a huge projector. Beers include a German Weizen with tones of banana; the clean, crisp Shwe Ale; the malty Burma Pale Ale; the robust London Porter; and Rangoon Blonde, a bitter and refreshing tipple. All are made according to the Reinheitsgebot, or German Beer Purity Law, a centuries-old Bavarian law that lists the only ingredients for beer production as water, barley and hops. Yeast wasn’t discovered at the time, but was later added. The hops come from US-based YCH Hops and the range of taste and aroma achieved from tweaking the volumes of hops and yeast never ceases to amaze The taproom also has a fresh apple cider and—delivered on Fridays—flavorful and unfiltered cask ale for 8,000 kyats per pint. If the beers sound familiar it’s because the menu has stayed the same as Burbrit Brewery—in fact, the kegs come straight from there, as it has the company’s only brewing license. Prices, though, are a tad steeper at the new venue. A 330ml glass costs 4,900 kyats, one-liter costs 13,000 kyats and a three-liter tower costs 39,000 kyats. A menu of Myanmar-Chinese-Western options (chicken cheese burger 8,500 kyats, fried noodles 3,900 kyats) is available and, if you can’t make it, rest assured Burbrit is distributed to 26 outlets around Myanmar now, so you’re likely to catch it somewhere. Address: 74, Ma Naw Hari Street, Dagon Township Hours: 3pm to 11pm (with plans to extend) Phone: 099 5096 2119

review

‘Tailored to deliver a speedy business lunch’ BY EDMOND SAILLAND Mexican restaurants sprung up across the city a few years ago but have since been in dire decline with both Gringo Chilangos and Tin Tin vacating downtown Yangon. Mañana—a eatery serving up authentic Oaxaca dishes and ranking highly on Trip Advisor—managed to survive this downturn. This downtown branch bills its self as Mañana “Express”—the setting and menu are tailored to delivering a speedy business lunch for nearby office workers. As I myself was on a lunch break, I put this promise to the test by ordering six varieties of tacos (2,000 kyats each) and a burrito (6,500 kyats). They did come remarkably quickly. The menu is fairly simple once you grasp the concept: on the front choose one of ten fillings to have in a burrito, quesadilla, tacos etc and on the back are set dishes: rice bowls, nachos, guacamole, and a crème caramel dessert. The chicken tinga burrito lacked enthusiasm. The texture of the pulled tomatoey chicken was great, as was the squidgy rice and the chewy tortilla, but the flavour void left me slathering it in tomato salsa and yearning for more. Of the tacos, three stood out: The Myanmex Meda (brilliant bold flavours of garlic, ginger, cinnamon, turmeric with juicy beef and crunchy onion), Myeik style vegetables (finely chopped cauliflower, green beans, cabbage, and onions in spices and black sesame), and chorizo (simple spicy smoky sausage). The spicy curry mutton delivered on large chunks of mutton but lacked any curry heat. The Viva Veggie was a great healthy option but wasn’t packed with flavour. The onion in the Yucatan pork swamped what was supposed to be an orange and achiote flavoured pork. I will definitely return to sate my Mexican cravings and check if the restaurant’s misses have been transformed in to hits. Particularly since the manager promised us a 3pm to 6pm happy hour on tacos and margaritas starting soon. Address: Bo Myat Htun Tower, Maha Bandoola Road, Yangon Phone: +95 9 255 833 706 Hours: 11am to 10pm

"Great to have a Mexican place back in downtown, and that it is manana is a pleasant surprise..." Andreas Sigurdsson www.sarmal.com.mm
