Guide

Yangon’s Best Street Food BY MIN YE KYAW Walking around the streets of Yangon, you come by many vendors selling some of Myanmar’s favorite snacks. Here’s some suggestions of what every Yangonite should try at least once.  Mohinga A rich fishy soup with rice noodles along with split bean fritter, quail egg or your choice of fried tempura, mohingya is one of the most famous Myanmar foods. Every quarter has its own shop of the cheap, delicious breakfast—it usually costs 500-1,000 kyats, but naturally that will be a bit higher at the high-end places targeted at foreigners.  Shan Noodle & Steamed Tofu Served as a noodle soup or salad, this dish has made it from Shan State to Yangon, with variations including vegetables, beans and steamed chicken or pork. Most Shan noodle joints serve it with steamed tofu and coriander. It’s also cheap and delicious, and my favorite breakfast of all time!  Tea Leaf Salad Laphet thoke or tea leaf salad is a mixture of soft, pickled tea leaves, Burmese crisps, steamed peas and other crunchy beans, blended with sesame beans, fried garlic, slices of tomato and, sometime dried shrimp or lemon to add its flavor. ‘Lahpet’ means green leaf and ‘thoke’ means salad. Most Yangon vendors serve it with rice and soup.

 Tempura Myanmar’s own French fries, tempuras is vegetables fried in rice flour— mostly gourd, tofu fries, onion and bean fries. Dip it in the sauce and take a bite. You can buy as many tempura pieces as you like although the usual purchase is 10 pieces for 1,000 kyats along with sauce and lettuce.

 Mote Pyar Ta Latt A golden, airy rice cake with mung beans and some vegetables sprinkled over the surface, mote pyat ta latt is made from a white batter of rice, sprinkles ginger, peas, beans, coriander and onion mixture, heated from above and below with coal. Some places also have thick and crispy thin bane mote, a sweet pancake that has white poppy seeds, jaggery and almond shavings. It’s also delicious. And the price is around 300-400 kyats per piece. Enjoy it with some tea and coffee.

Olive Kabab House Olive Kabab House is the type of place where you will realize how much you have missed gorging yourself on kebab, and how those days are over now. The family-run joint dishes out several varieties of kebab and thick pita bread for budget prices in a no-frills setting. Unsurprisingly, the diner has been bustling with hungry customers since opening one month ago. Almost everything is cooked from scratch with the help of a clay oven, and the eatery’s speciality lamb shank is on the higher end of the price list, at only 4,000 kyats. Staff serve the lamb shank broth as a gratis side or customers looking for an aphrodisiac may consider the oxtail soup on the owner’s recommendation. Ten thousand kyats is more than enough to fill you—probably for days. Kebab like the long, hand-minced adana and the Turkish beyti cost 6,000 kyats and come with rice and salad, or rice and yoghurt. Chicken seekh kebab with a wonderfully spiced mandi rice comes for 5,000 kyats, while Myanmar-style curries (oxtail, mutton, beef, beef tongue) are between 2,500-5,000 kyats. The beef pita-pide—Turkish flat bread with ground beef, chicken or cheddar/mozzarella—is 3,000 kyats. The turkey leg with mash potato and a fresh tomato dip, and the rack of lamb spine also come recommended. Special orders on huge feasts are available for groups at a discounted price—in fact, that is how Olive Kebab started two years ago, as a catering and delivery service. Its move to bricks and mortar sees it becoming a real purveyor of fine kebabs: undoubtedly it will amass a loyal following. Address: 9, (ground floor), 90th Street, Kandawkalay Township Opening hours: 5pm-11pm Telephone: 09420108879 / 09968550550

review

Indian Tadka Downtown I don’t like to see independent restaurants replaced by big chains. But, in the case of Indian Tadka supplanting India Kitchen on Mahabandoola Road, at least the takeover has yielded a better dining experience for guests. While I frequently enjoyed dining at its previous iteration, the revamp gives a definite uptick in the quality of food and surroundings and perhaps a slight decrease in the price. Indian Tadka’s third outlet in the city is a far more stylised setting than the restaurant’s previous occupant, with large pieces of artwork, statement light fittings, and a lot of brass. The mezzanine level looks far more inviting than it did previously with a fancy balustrade. I started with the potato samosas (2,000 kyats) which had a reassuringly irregular shape, convincing me they were homemade, and a nice thick, chewy skin. The stuffing lacked any real flavor punch but the accompanying sauce was tart, rich, and tangy. The tandoori murgh tikka chicken (5,500 kyats) was the highlight of meal with succulent and soft meat, well-balanced spices and lovely charred notes. The Kashmiri dum aloo (3,500 kyats) was both sweet and creamy and therefore felt very indulgent. The cashews gave a welcome additional texture and a great nutty kick. I really enjoyed the strong ginger flavor and the subtle smokiness of the saag paneer (5,000 kyats). Both curries sated the appetite, but left me wanting a little more in the way of flavour. The naans—we tried garlic and plain—were crispy, chewy, tasty but a little too oily. Indian Tadka serves up a mean mango lassi (during mango season at least) and the masala chai is authentic tasting. The beer, which I always feel is the perfect accompaniment to curry, is reasonably priced. Indian Tadka offers more than palatable Indian classics in a well-curated environment with better-than-average service—you wouldn’t expect a restaurant in this price range to change your plates between courses. Its curry-house feel and shareable dishes make it the perfect place to amass a group of pals for a night of Indian fare. Address: No. 297, Mahanbandoola Road, Yangon Phone: +95 1 389 367 Opening Hours: 10am to 11pm

“Never tried indian food before, but indian tadka give me the best taste of indian food.” ML Nana www.sarmal.com.mm
