myanmore awards 2018
Chef of the year The voting has now closed for the Myanmore Dining and Nightlife awards 2018. All the nominations have been place and the votes are being counted. A shortlist is being prepared and the Myanmore panel of expert independent judges are reviewing the nominations, visiting venues and scoring the 11 awards. Of the exciting individual award categories, the most coveted, and highly anticipated prize is undoubtedly chef of the year. This year the nominations are of an incredibly high calibre— which is a great indication of how the quality of food offerings in Myanmar is really growing from strength to strength, but this does make judging especially difficult. The award for chef of the year isn’t just about cooking amazing food though, there is a lot more to this prestigious award. Last year’s winner was Roshan Fernando of the Sule Shangri-La Hotel, and despite being a world-class chef, he beat the competition into first place for his extraordinary accomplishments outside of the kitchen. Chef Roshan was a driving force and major influencer in promoting Myanmar cuisine to a global audience. His vision and spirit in training and supporting a team of young Myanmar chefs led to unprecedented gold-medal success at the 2016 Culinary Olympics held in Germany. Chef Olivier E Soe Thet who presented Roshan with his award at the ceremony last year congratulated him on the award: “He has trained many Myanmar chefs in the Middle East who have all now returned to Myanmar and are part of the backbone of the hospitality industry here. He also inspires and motivates young Myanmar chefs in Yangon to become better skilled and gain independence for a better life. He is a great culinary expert of modern, classical and traditional cuisines from around the world and he is helping Myanmar cuisine earn a place on the global culinary map.” The awards ceremony will be held on February 3 at the Melia Hotel in Yangon. Sofaer & co WORDS AND PHOTO BY EDWARD SAILLAND A really good meal out can feel a little bit like a holiday. This is how I felt after an evening at Sofaer & Co. The multisensory pleasures over two hours on a Tuesday evening transported me away from the hum drum of cosmopolitan life to a world of colonial grandeur and sumptuous regional cuisine. Sofaer & Co occupies a slice of one of Yangon’s most impressive heritage buildings. Its opening a few months ago helped cement that little stretch of Pansodan Street as Yangon’s most promising eating and drinking neighborhood. The restaurant serves up dishes from the Mekong region— Myanmar, Laos, Thailand—with a modern twist in classic colonial surroundings. There’s dark wood, original 19th Century beams and tiles. The service is some of the best I’ve seen in Yangon and the cocktails are delicious. I started with the Shan potato crisp with spicy mutton and mayo (4,000 kyats). The potatoes were tasty, the mutton was incredibly rich, with levels of sweetness, spiciness, and meatiness. The mayonnaise tasted homemade and was well seasoned. I also tried the Burman Scotch egg (5,000 kyats)—a a little less meaty than I remembered, but still very palatable. Then came the morning glory with seared beef (6,000 kyat) and the turmeric crusted chicken (12,000 kyats). The beef in the morning glory was overall delicious. The chicken was sweet, succulent and wonderfully complimented by a tart yoghurt and cucumber sauce. Sofaer’s “signature roti” was a little greasy and became soggy as it was served underneath the chicken. A lighter, crispier bread on the side would’ve been preferable. Even though I tried to opt for lighter options, I found the amount of oil, sugar, and salt began to drag by the end. Also, after trying four dishes, I became tired by the constant garnishes of Thai basil and deep fried shallot. Overall, however, Sofaer & Co is one of my favourite dining options in Myanmar. I will certainly be back to try more of the well-cooked, wellpresented, and well-priced items on the menu. Address: 60 Pansodan Street, Lower Block, Kyauktada Township, Yangon. Hours: 8 am to 11 pm | Phone: 09 44833 3499
"An interesting concept with potential ... price for two easily exceeds 30,000 kyat. Would be more acceptable and expected if a more local 3,000 kyat per person place. Andreas Sigurdsson
