Best Date Night Restaurants in Yangon BY SWAN HTET Planning a date night, but not sure where to go? Check out the following outdoor dining spots for a romantic evening.  Le Planteur First opened in 1998, Le Planteur is a fine dining bistro offering authentic French cuisine in a majestic setting. Their outdoor dining area overlooks Inya Lake and the view is just perfect for a romantic date. If you don’t want to dine outside though, their indoor area is also an attractive option. Try one or two of their long lists of wines and talk the evening away with your significant other. 80 University Avenue, Bahan Township, Yangon, Myanmar (Burma), Yangon 11:30am-11:30pm 01 514 230

 L’Opera Another popular option for European dining, L’Opera first opened in 1997 and has established itself as Yangon’s premier Italian restaurant. With a dining area overlooking Inya Lake, L’Opera is definitely an ideal option for a romantic meet up. To add to the atmosphere, their dishes are authentic and use only high-quality ingredients. An extensive menu featuring home made pastas, wood-fired oven pizzas, and fresh salads make L’Opera a popular option among expats and locals alike. 62 D, U Htun Nyein Street, Mayangone Township, Yangon 11am-2pm, 6pm-10:30pm 09 7303 0755 | 01 665 516 | 01 660 976

 Seeds Yet another classy establishment on the shores of Inya Lake—which isn’t really surprising because the lake has a beautiful atmosphere, especially in the evening. International fine dining bistro Seeds recently

won Myanmore’s Restaurant of the Year 2018. Masterminded by Swiss Michelin star chef Felix Eppisser and his wife, Lucia Eppisser, a renowned hotelier, Seeds is seen as the result of their culinary life journey and devotion to utmost perfection. No 63A, U Tun Nyein Street, Ward 10, Mayangone Township, Yangon / Myanmar 11:30am–2pm | 5pm–11pm 01 655 900

 The Class Located in the downtown area is The Class, a fine dining rooftop restaurant with a variety of food options. The charm of this restaurant is the outdoor dining area, which has a wonderful view of downtown Yangon after work hours. If you’re looking for an after-work meet up with your significant other, then this is the ideal place. 161, Wa Dan Street, Yangon 10am–11pm 09 978 636622

 The Yangon Restaurant Operating in People’s Park, Yangon Restaurant is a fine dining bistro located just a few steps away from the iconic pearl elephant fountain. The decor is classy yet not necessarily extravagant. While the menu is mainly seasonal, Chef Rollinson serves a wide array of Mediterranean food primarily using local ingredients. If you’re looking to bring your significant other somewhere that’s both classy and serves delicious food, I highly recommend going to the Yangon Restaurant. People’s Park Compound, Ahlone Road, Near Planetarium Museum, Dagon Township, Yangon Weekdays 12–5PM, 6–11PM | Weekends 10:30AM–4PM, 6–11PM 01 370 177

 The Envoy Also in downtown, The Envoy serves European-fusion fare and is celebrate for its extensive drinks menu. The decor is simple yet memorable and the atmosphere is reminiscent of a 1950s rooftop party. Because of its atmosphere and array of dishes, Envoy has quickly become a staple of Yangon’s downtown evening diners. 108 Bo Aung Kyaw Street (Lower Block), Botahtaung Township, Yangon, Myanmar 11am-11:30pm 01 380 284

new opening

Fry ups galore at Yangon’s new Mary’s café About a five-minute drive from Inya Lake is a new café serving English fry ups that will satisfy most fans of the hefty breakfast. Mary’s opened in early June to the delight of British food lovers, with affordable English breakfasts, Myanmar classics and egg-based dishes on the menu. Owner Honey Oo, who named the café after her grandmother, spent six years living and studying in England, where she gained an appreciation of British fare through a part-time job at a hotel in the historic town of Bath. The 26-year-old has decorated the café’s small space with family heirlooms and curiosities, such as vintage cameras, sports trophies, her grandmother’s sawing machine, and an invitation to the wedding of King Thibaw Min (her partner is a descendant). A couple of benches and a wicker egg basket chair shaded by mango and thanaka trees make for a pleasant outdoor sitting area, to the right of the entrance-cum-basketball court. But what’s on the plate? Two Thai-imported pork sausages, two eggs and two bacon rashers (both locally-sourced), tomatoes, mashed potato and Heinz baked beans. Good. Honey has plans to introduce black pudding and hash browns to the 6,000-kyat dish, as well as bamboo straws to her establishment. Naturally, Twinings tea is available (1,200 kyats) and hot coffees are only 900 kyats. Other offerings including eggs benedict, cheese and ham omelets, and eggs on toast (from 1,500-4,000 kyats), and rice salad with chicken/fish/ beef/mutton for 3,000 kyats. Honey, who runs a delivery-only florist out back, recommends the fruit yoghurt, fruit salads, and ice cream and cake (all from 1,500-3000 kyats) too. From the all-day 4,900-kyats lunch sets is a delicious beef stew with mashed potato, or the half-English from the all-day breakfasts deals. Address: Kyauk Kone Street, Maha Bawdi Lane, Yankin Township Phone: 09 4451 11134 Hours: Closed Monday Tuesday-Thursday 8am-5pm | Friday-Sunday 9am-6pm

review

Grand Library Restaurant

Opened in May, the Grand Library on downtown’s Bo Aung Kyaw Street serves up standard Burmese and regional fare in a light two-storey restaurant. Unfortunately, after a lunch at the Grand Library, I failed to see what new the restaurant brought to the table. The service was enthusiastic, but the setting was not worth paying over the odds for what you could find in a simple local eatery. I will not be back. With big windows overlooking the recently repainted Secretariat and high ceilings, Grand Library would be a good setting for a funky new venue in the heart of historic downtown. The proprietor seems to have halfheartedly styled the interiors. There’s some colonial-style wall art, original wooding floorings, and some cute alcove ceilings upstairs, but there’s also bland furniture, a lot of white light, and cheap plastic flowers. The menu includes a good array of Myanmar classics including curries, salads, stir-fries, and grilled meats for around 5,000 to 10,000 kyats. I started with the chicken salad (4,500 kyats) which included a generous helping of chicken breast, crunchy onions, juicy tomatoes, and punchy flavours of kaffir lime leaves, fish sauce, and citrus. It had a powerful chili hit which I enjoyed but may put some people off. A good helping of spinach (2,000 kyats) was fresh and served with big pieces of garlic and dried shrimps. The Masala chicken (6,500 kyats) had good rich flavours of herbs and spices but was a little too oily. One piece of chicken looked a little undercooked on the inside and although it was served with some vegetable sticks and a spicy salsa, rice was extra (800 kyats). The dessert menu looked interesting: a coconut cream rice ball and a durian sticky rice, but everything except the mixed fruit and yoghurt (3,000 kyats) was unavailable. The fruit and yoghurt was fine. I don’t enjoy discouraging readers from visiting a restaurant, especially places like Grand Library where the staff are friendly and engaging, but I can’t see what it offers in comparison to other nearby eateries: neither the food nor the setting would be worth a second visit for me. The restaurant does stock a good variety of beer and Magners cider and the “beer bites” menu looked promising. If they can replace the bright white lights, it may be better as a downtown drinking den. Address: No. 277, Bo Aung Kyaw Street (Middle Block, Yangon Hours: 7am-10pm, every day Phone: 09 564 0777
