Paradise Dynasty: Paradise Found for Xiao Long Bao Fans BY CHARLES DUCHEMIN The restaurant’s décor is sleek and the environment is lively. The experience put me in mind of a Hong Kong dim sum hall on a Sunday morning—a pleasant hubbub of conversation and tantalizing dishes being whisked past you by servers. We were immediately warmly greeted, waiters and waitresses were attentive, each dish was presented with an explanation, and my tea cup was regularly topped up. It was some of the best service I have had in Yangon. I started with the restaurant’s trademark international xiao long bao combination basket with ten variations: original, ginseng, fois gras, black truffle, cheese, crab roe, garlic, and Sichuan peppercorn. The colourful wheel of dumplings in a bamboo basket is an instragrammer’s dream. (For xiao long bao virgins, Paradise Dynasty provides an eating guide on each table.) An intense analysis of the original revealed Paradise Dynasty’s xiao long bao game to be on form, but not sensational. The flavors of the pork and soup were solid but the skin was just a little too thick. The speciality varieties were hit and miss: The cheese, black truffle, and garlic variations added a welcoming new dimension of flavor while the tastes of fois gras, ginseng, and crab roe were not really discernible. The addition of Sichuan peppercorn and garlic overpowered the delicate xiao long bao flavors in a way that did not please me. I tried the drunken chicken—the meat was tender and the skin packed with flavour. Some may criticize the chef for being heavy handed on the shaoxing wine, but I lapped it up. The quality of the Sichuan peppercorn in the la mian (noodles) with hot chilli vinaigrette was fantastic. A deep chilli flavour with a pleasant tingling numbing sensation lingering on the tongue and lips. Again, the skin of the dumpling was a little thick—their tails did not slither about one’s mouth in the way they should. Down points? The napkins are neither of high quality nor plentiful and the bathroom is not in the restaurant itself, but a small adventure away in another part of the square. Flying over a city is not only a mesmerizing experience but also one that offers a chance to become more familiar with whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s below. Spending a morning flying over Yangon with Mingalarbar Balloon was a great activity and one of the best ways to enjoy the view of Yangon. It is located in Bogyoke Aung San Park, a section of Kandawgyi Park. The price for the fare was nothing compared to its counterparts in Bagan and Inle Lake, where both foreigners and locals would have to pay over 300 dollars. Here, you have to pay only about 30 dollars and less for locals. Arriving there at 10am, I was surprised to see there were no queues. The service there was pleasing. The pilots were trained abroad and ensured the passengers were comfortable in the air. For safety measures, the passengers have to wear a belt connected to the basket. I discovered the balloon was not gas powered like those in Bagan. It was a helium balloon tethered to the ground. As the balloon took off and when we passed the tree lines, revealing a full view of the lake and walkway, silence filled the air. After a few minutes, I saw Shwedagon Pagoda appear, the gold light of it beaming out onto the horizon. The city began to appear, and, looking at the pagoda and cityscape, I felt a part of this scene, the gold light beaming in the corner of my eye. The lake was glaring with its green essence. The lake, the walkway, the park, the city and the magnificent pagoda were striking enough to transcend you into a peaceful state. Twenty minutes flying went quickly, when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re being mesmerized by the view. The landing was smooth and, overall, I had an amazing experience. If you are new to Yangon or just want to have fun with friends and take a ton of beautiful pictures, I would urge you to try the balloon ride. It will be an experience you will not regret.
