Top Historical Attractions in Yangon

 The Secretariat, by Anabelle

Known as the biggest colonial building in Southeast Asia, the Secretariat is easily recognized by its red brick walls. This building, constructed towards the end of the 19th century, is situated between Bo Aung Kyaw and Thein Phyu roads. The Ministers’ Building has a very special place in the heart of Burmese people because General Aung San, the father of modern Myanmar, was assassinated in one of its rooms. The building is currently being renovated and it will host a cultural complex in 2019. Location: Between Bo Aung Kyaw Road and Thein Phyu Road

 Bogyoke Aung San Museum, by Grace Ever wanted to understand the life of Myanmar’s leader of independence? Located in Bogyoke Aung San’s well-preserved former residence, this museum allows you to experience the deceased general’s house as it was back when he and his family lived here. The building contains various items from when he was alive, including furniture, books and family photos, as well as the car he used to drive until he was assassinated at the age of 32. The house, a two-story colonial building, is in itself an impressive work of architecture surrounded by a pristine garden and lake. This weekend, retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city, and look into the life of one of Myanmar’s greatest heroes. Location: No. 15, Bogyoke Museum Lane, Yangon Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm

 U Thant House, by Mathis U Thant House, located in the old Windermere estate area, is the former house of U Thant, a Burmese politician who was also a general secretary of the United Nations. This house was restored in 2013 by the U Thant family with the help from Yangon Heritage Trust. Today you can visit this residence which has a fitting memorial in honor of U Thant including photos and video collections of him. It’s also an area for public lectures and high-level discussions. The house is open to the public three days per week on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Location: 31 Panwa Lane, Kamayut Township, Yangon

 The Mogul Shia Mosque, by Anabelle The Mogul Shia Mosque is the oldest and largest mosque in Yangon and was built during World War I by five trustees from Afghanistan and Iran. Next to Sule Pagoda, the mosque is famous for its Mughal-style architecture and its two 110 feet tall minarets. The outside is painted with traditional black-and-cream colors and decorated with arabesques. The Shia mosque belongs to the Mogul community, who are descendants of Persian Shia men and Burmese women. The mosque is a beautiful place to visit, and even to take pictures, but remember it is a place for prayers so tourists aren’t usually allowed inside except during tours. Location: between 29th and 30th Streets, near Sule Pagoda

 Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue, by Lou Hidden between Indian paint shops and Muslim traders, you may be stunned to come across the Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue. The original synagogue was built in the 1850s when Baghdadi and Indian Jews arrived in Yangon. The current synagogue was completed in 1896 and renovated in 2007. The Jewish population fled with the Japanese invasion during the Second World War. The Jewish population is now struggling to keep its small community and synagogue. Fortunately, the synagogue is becoming an increasingly popular touristic destination for its spacious interior and surprising history. It is also known to be a peaceful place of meeting for different religions and for hosting events open to all. Location: 26th Street

 Shwedagon Pagoda, by Mathis Perhaps the most famous sight in Yangon, Shwedagon was built between the sixth and the tenth century by the Mons. During your visit, you can make offerings in different constructions around the main stupa in order to have favorable destiny, luck or health. If you visit this monument, you must know that you have to take off your shoes and be correctly dressed. Location: No. 1, Shwedagon Pagoda Road

 Saint Mary’s Cathedral, by Grace Myanmar’s largest Roman Catholic cathedral, Saint Mary’s Cathedral, is an impressive building with neo-Gothic architectural elements. On my first visit there for my graduation photoshoot, both the interior and exterior exceeded all my expectations. Its elaborate spirals and tall, vaulted wooden doors were well-preserved, looking like something straight out of 19th century Europe. The interior of this red-brick building is no less spellbinding than its exterior, having been adorned with high ceilings and colorful stained-glass windows, not to mention its cool, calming atmosphere. It was built during 1899-1911 by a Dutch architect, and is usually open to visitors, along with its surroundings; but please note that it is a place of piety, and taking photos and loud talking are not allowed inside. Location: 372 Bo Aung Kyaw Road, Botahtaung Township

 Sofaer & Co Building, by Lou Situated on Pansodan Street, the Sofaer building is home to many trendy restaurants, shops and an art gallery (The Lokanat Gallery). In 1906, trader Isaac Sofaer designed the building with the help of Thomas Swales, the architect. At the beginning of the 20th century, the impressive Italianate style building housed international businesses and many shops of imported goods. Today, you can enjoy meals here at the restaurant, which has kept authentic Manchester tiles over a century old and Scottish steel beams. These features give a stylish vibe to the place by blending colonial era and modern design. Location: 62 Pansodan Street, Yangon

Fratello Rooftop BY MIN YE KYAW

Boasting a view of Shwedagon Pagoda and Judson Church, new restaurant and rooftop bar Fratello offers customers a mostly Italian menu, with some Mediterranean fare, and may just be Yangon’s answer to Bangkok’s famed Above Eleven bar. Fratello is decorated with photos took by the owner, Cho Zin Wyne, when she traveled around Europe five years ago. “I love traveling and food so I wanted to bring the food I tried in Europe to here,” she said. “Every dish was my favorite!” Fratello’s signature Sangria welcomes with its sweet and sour taste, a mixture of red wine, orange, Hennessy, lemon, cinnamon, apple and green apple for 7,500 kyats. Red Snapper Tartare (12,000 kyats)—the second hello—comes with a splash of lemon juice, freshly ground pepper, and a dash of homemade virgin olive oil. Real treats can be found in the restaurant’s mains, including the truffle gnocchi (9,000 kyats), which is made with potato gnocchi and truffle cream sauce, and the roast spring chicken (18,000 kyats) that comes with garden-fresh herbs, roasted garlic and homemade chilli sauce. Tasty! For dessertarians, Fratello has its own take on the classic Tiramisu (8,000 kyats) with mascarpone cheese cream and ladyfingers dipped in Espresso. Also there’s panna cotta (6,000 kyats) with fine cream flan, fresh seasonal mango, lychee and raspberry coulis. Or if not, their walnut-cashew brownie is always an option. Address: 587 Pyay Road, The Regency Offices, Kamayut Township. Contact: 09 952 011666 Hours: 11 am – 11 pm

new opening

Genki Sushi opens its first restaurant in Yangon Families looking for somewhere fun to bring the kids will welcome the news of Genki Sushi’s first outlet in Myanmar. The Japanese restaurant chain opened on the third floor of Yangon’s Junction City on Friday, with crowds queuing to taste the menu and enjoy the novel experience. Customers make their orders on touch screens at each table and are served by model sports cars with space for four dishes. The cars whiz around the restaurant on a two-lane system different from the usual conveyor belt setup that transports sushi around in circles. The thinking is this makes the food fresher and speedier to deliver. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, Genki Sushi invited MYANMORE to sample some of the food. Stand outs included the clam-packed miso soup (1,700 kyats) and steamed egg custard (3,000 kyats), which beneath a lid has a filling of mushrooms, chicken, and crab stick. Thankfully all the beverages and hot dishes are brought by the staff— otherwise diners may find themselves scalded by their orders. (The cars reach fairly high speeds). All reasonably priced, the sushi is made mostly by high-tech machines in the kitchen. The garlic salmon roll (4,500 kyats) is particularly good, with thick cuts of salmon, a garlic puree and fried garlic on top, and a stuffing of crab stick and cucumber. All the classic picks along with some interesting salads are available and the place has strong Wi-Fi. Address: Junction City, Room No. 03-20 A, 3rd Floor, Corner of Bogyoke Aung San Road and Shwedagon Pagoda Road Contact: 09 260 773 366
