The Taunggyi fire Balloon Festival: A Beginner’s Guide When is it: 16th - 22nd November 2018 Where is it: Located just outside the hilltop city of Taunggyi in Shan State, travellers from Yangon can either fly to Heho Airport or take the overnight bus from Aung Mingalar Highway Bus Station to Nyaung Shwe. What is it: To celebrate the Tazaungmon full moon, which signals the end of the rainy season, thousands descend on Taunggyi for a 7-day festival. Competing teams build huge paper balloons, decked out with candles and firecrackers, and launch them into the sky each night.

What to expect: The Taunggyi Balloon Festival is one of the most spectacular events in Myanmar’s calendar. Where else in the world can you see paper balloons, rigged with fireworks, being launched into the air before exploding overhead? A health and safety nightmare, be ready for dense and drunken crowds, plus the occasional rogue explosive. But all that aside, it’s a wild and unique adventure, complete with a man-powered Ferris wheel, lots of beer and a spectacular show. What to bring: Though the area around Taunggyi, including Inle Lake and Nyaung Shwe, is warm during the day, temperatures drop at night. Much of the festival is open air so jeans and jumpers are advised, but there are plenty of clothing stalls too so you’ll have the option to top off your outfit with a hat, anything from Pokémon beanies to knitted pink bonnets are strongly encouraged. Many bring blankets that serve a variety of purposes – including being somewhere to shelter under in case fireworks spray into the crowd. The festival is situated in a large sloping field so scruffy trainers are best. Bring enough money for the fair ground attractions, shops and bars as well as an extra bit for the ride back to your hotel, which can be extortionate late at night. Where to stay: Though there are places to stay in Taunggyi, many make for the more scenic town of Nyaung Shwe or even the shores of Inle Lake. The options include: Ostello Bello Nyaung Shwe Yone Gyi Street, Nyaung Shwe 081 209 302 ostellobello.com Inle Cottage Hotel Nyaung Shwe 081 209 305 inlecottage.com Inle Princess Resort Maing Tauk Road, Nyaung Shwe 09 525 1407 inle-princess.com

HOMEGROWN HEROES New pop-up Recess on Baho Road opens its doors and ushers in a new generation of local talent. One of the biggest challenges facing shoppers in Yangon hoping to buy authentic locally designed clothes is that there are few places where homegrown labels are showcased together. While international and wellestablished brands can afford the city’s lofty commercial rental prices, few options remain for newly emerging brands. The result is that much of Myanmar’s burgeoning fashion scene exists mainly online and country’s creativity often remains unrecognised. Recently, a group of seniors at The International School Yangon (ISY), Sithu Kyaw Win, Thomas Aung, Albert Paing, Ye Khant Moe, Zwe Myo Aung and Dillon Kelly, came up with an idea to challenge this. The boys, aged between 17-18, saw the need for Myanmar brands to have the space to showcase their work and as a result, the pop-up Recess opened its doors on Baho Road on October 20th Thomas Aung, one of the student founders of Recess, explains that the concept for the pop-up originally grew out of the idea to create a unisex

ready-to-wear label of their own. This in turn led the boys to discover other Myanmar brands trying to do the same thing and the idea to unite them all was born. “In the past few months we realised there has been a sudden increase in local labels, but they don’t have a platform,” says Thomas. “It’s all online and all dispersed. We wanted to gather everything into a physical location.” The space the boys have taken over is three floors of an empty office on Baho Road. Each floor has been developed into a specific section for the three aspects of the pop-up. On the ground floor is the café My Drinks, on the next level is the clothing outlet and the third floor is reserved for an art gallery. Created in collaboration with ArtAnt, the gallery features works from local artists including Nyan Ye Naing and Aung Kyaw San. At Recess there are a number of little known labels to discover, including Fragment of Imagination and Youth of Burma. There are also some wellknown local labels, like Her Alchemy and Rangoon Studios. As well as being a place to come check out local designers and artwork, for the founders and many of the designers themselves, the pop-up represents the growing confidence in Myanmar design and creation. “I think the store is a representation of how Myanmar is coming up,” adds Dillon. “In places like Bangkok, you would see this kind of thing, but it’s new here. Now we can show that there is actually good, original clothing labels in Myanmar.” Currently Recess is confirmed to run until November 20th but there is a hope to extend the pop-up until December. Check the Facebook page for more information. Baho Shop House 1, Baho Road, Sanchaung Township
