‘Do-it-yourself beef spring rolls’ BY EDWARD SAILLAND A slight caveat that I should add to this review is that I do not pretend to be any sort of an expert on Vietnamese cuisine, so cannot comment with authority on whether the food served up at Cyclo is authentic. I did, out of commitment to you, however, approach a large table of mainly Vietnamese people enjoying their dinner during the meal and ask them if they thought it was similar to food in Vietnam. “Half,” was the answer, along with a recommendation to order the oxtail hotpot. Cyclo is located among that parade of restaurants on the U Wisara end of People’s Park. Its tucked to the side of the row, a large shed-like restaurant with a main dining area, private rooms, and some ad hoc al fresco seating out the front. The restaurant has what I call an “aspirational menu;” a large number of dishes spanning spring rolls, curries, hot pots, fried rice and noodles with perhaps 40 percent unavailable. We ordered a range—spring rolls, boiled duck with ginger, beef hot pot, and vegetables. The broccoli and shrimps we ordered was actually cauliflower and shrimps but it did taste good. As did the morning glory. The pork and shrimp spring rolls were solid too, refreshing with mint, coriander, glass noodles and a fishy spicy dipping sauce. Perhaps the highlight of the meal was the doit-yourself beef spring rolls. The presentation was on point with the beef and slices of cucumber, pineapple, herbs and noodles served on a bamboo platter. The duck with ginger had a decent taste but there were stubs of feathers in the skin which were really off putting and it was left untouched—a waste of 18,000 kyats. The pieces of beef looked good and smelt fresh but curled up into tough lumps after just a quick dip in the boiling broth. Cyclo’s service was enthusiastic but sporadic. The environment was a too car-park like for me. If friends invited me for some DIY spring rolls and hot pot, I would begrudgingly return, but I won’t be making the effort to eat there again myself.
