RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR Winner: ORNG Kitchen

T

he last twelve months have been an extraordinary time for Orng Joitamoi the owner and Head Chef of Orng Kitchen. At the start of last year, he relocated to his rather splendid open-air restaurant at 7 mile, giving up his ‘baby’, the little downtown restaurant where he first established himself. He refined his menu, tightened up his front of house, built a talented and reliable kitchen team, and developed his comprehensive and well-priced wine list. He expanded his customer base, introducing his French fine dining cuisine to a wider audience, and he is in huge demand to provide his services to a number of high profile customers. He set up a kitchen garden where he has space to grow his own fruits and vegetables, next to the private lake where his ducks are free to roam without fear of ending up in the pot. And despite the economic climate, Orng Kitchen restaurant is rarely quiet whatever day of the week it is. Oh, and he also won the 2018 Myanmore Chef of the Year Award. What an incredible year it has been for him. Orng kitchen is something of an anomaly in Yangon, in that it serves exceptional French cuisine cooked

to a Michelin star standard, in a delightful location, with white linen table cloths, starched napkins and smart service, yet you can sample his 5-course tasting menu for only 45,000 kyats. With very few expensively imported ingredients, Chef Orng is able to keep his costs down, but that doesn’t mean he compromises in quality. Chef Orng prides himself on the seasonality of his menu, and he hand selects every component of every dish. Almost 100% of the ingredients that Chef Orng uses in his innovative creations are locally sourced, many are grown on site, many are specially selected from individual farmers based on their organic approach to farming and consistency of their produce, and a number are harvested from his family's farm in Mon state. In all the excitement of him winning the Chef of the Year award last year, it is easily forgotten that he was also a runner up in the KBZ Entrepreneur of the Year award too. As exciting and important as the Chef of the Year award was, his dedication to improving his business, and the time and hard work, blood sweat and tears he has invested into every element of his restaurant is the justification of that runner up spot,

and this is evident in the success and growth of Orng Kitchen. If you’ve been to Orng Kitchen, then you’ll fully understand why it is a worthy winner of this years Myanmore Dining and Nightlife Restaurant of the year award. Although it could be described quite accurately as a “hidden gem” due to its location in the back streets of 7 mile. The problematic traffic and the U-turns and uncertainty faced by first-time visitors quickly pales into insignificance as soon as you are settled in the restaurant. As the perfectly presented dishes are efficiently delivered to your table the trials and tribulations of your journey are but a vague memory. Under the watchful eye of Chef Orng from his open plan kitchen, he oversees every dish and every guest at every table in the restaurant, you are treated to a gastronomic experience of the highest order, and one that you will be hard pushed to beat. Congratulations on your award Chef, let’s hope 2019 is an even better year than last!

BAR OF THE YEAR Winner: The Penthouse Independent Concepts where a owner/ Manager is doing his magic, All these Places put in some extra effort,

I

t’s easy to forget the huge impact the Penthouse had on the Yangon bar and restaurant scene when they opened up all those years ago. They were among the first bars to take advantage of the roof space available in Yangon, and due to their location were able to offer the most amazing views of the city and the Shwedagon Pagoda, many consider the Penthouse view to be the best in Yangon. But there is more to The Penthouse than the views, with their consistently high-quality Mediterranean food offering, substantial wine list, excellent service and superb bar experience, you can understand why they have been so successful over the years. In 2018 they underwent a small refurbishment, and although they moved the bar and tidied up their urban industrial chic decor, it was the change in personnel that was to have the most significant impact on their business. The introduction of Italian master mixologist Francesco Moretti into their

team changed The Penthouse from a great bar into one of the best bars in the country with one of the most exciting and innovative cocktail menus in Yangon. Francesco was a runner up in the Wines and Spirits Ambassador award at the Myanmore Dining and Nightlife Awards in 2018 and was an excellent off-season signing by The Penthouse. His part in the transformation of The Penthouse has been instrumental in them winning the Coveted Myanmore Bar of the Year award, although it seems that they have been building up to this moment for a while now.

a stylish crowd who are often treated to a set by a visiting international DJ. As the volume increases the crowd builds, and as the vibe intensifies Moretti becomes more animated behind the bar, bottles fly, glasses are twirled, and he directs his team like he is conducting an orchestra. This award is perhaps long overdue for The Penthouse, but they deserve it, so congratulations Francesco and the team, cheers to 2019!

When Francesco left five months ago, his former colleague Thet Ko Win took over the role and kept the place running till now. The Penthouse is a bar that builds its tempo as the night goes on, the transition from a relaxed chilled vibe to a high energy high volume bar is steady. By 10pm at the weekends it is usually packed out with

CAFE OF THE YEAR Winner: Bodhi Nava

O

wned by the much loved Bo from the much loved Green Gallery, Bodhi Nava is smart and tidy café come restaurant come boutique hostel that serves up a fresh and funky menu of fusion foods. Somehow Bo and Ben (the other founder) have managed to fit a multipurpose business into their delightfully renovated little house (it used to be a car workshop) but despite the coming and going of travellers, they have also built up a firm following of trendy Yangon foodies. Their compact menu flits between a taste of Thailand, Myanmar, the West, and the Middle East with plenty of tasty examples of a keen eye for a fusion of flavours, pineapple curry, might sound crazy, but it works! The portion sizes are generous, and the prices are very reasonable. Bodhi Nava is building up a strong following of foodies who like to enjoy healthy dishes at a reasonable price, but more importantly, like to hang out in a cool and relaxing café. Located right on the doorstep of the Shwedagon Pagoda, Bodhi Nava is ideally placed for a quick bite

to eat after exploring the back streets of Bahan. Due to their closeness to the Pagoda, they do not serve alcohol, but they do have a fabulous selection of fresh juices and smoothies that more than make up for that. In fact, their beautifully presented smoothie bowls that include nuts, seeds, dried fruits and all manner of sprinkled healthy things have established a fan club all of their own. Every item on the menu seems to have been posted on Instagram at some point due to the photogenic nature of the food, and the English muffins served with shredded chicken and tamarind and sesame sauce seem to be a favourite foodie photo.

The name Bodhi Nava is intended to reflect the tranquillity of this sacred area, as the Bodhi (Banyan) tree is where the Buddha attained enlightenment through meditation, and Nava is the number 9 in Pali - the ancient Buddhist language - representing the 9 attributes of the Buddha. Bo has been a servant of the Yangon Dining and Nightlife scene for many years, and she and her team are working really hard to make Bodhi Nava the success it deserves to be. Their hard efforts and imaginative approach have certainly paid off, and they are very much worthy of the Myanmore Cafe of the Year award.

The service, as you would expect from anywhere even remotely connected to Ma Bo, is friendly and helpful, but also laid back and generally pretty cool at the same time. The interior of the café is minimalist, airy and light with floor to ceiling windows, but also striking with brushed concrete, black metal, and reclaimed wood. There is a certain relaxed, urban vibe, with a hint of Yangon hipster thrown in for good measure.

MYANMAR FOOD RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR Winner: Mu Ai Kachin

M

u Ai could perhaps once have been described as “one of Yangon's bestkept secrets”, tucked away in a little back street in Hledan this tiny restaurant with just 6 tables was for a long time only known to those in the know. That has all changed in the last year or so as Head Chef and owner Ko Pandang La Roi has built up a considerable following for his innovative, flavourful and beautifully presented Kachin Food. In fact, there’s a good chance that you will have had the opportunity to sample his intricately designed dishes even if you haven’t visited Mu Ai yet, as Chef La Roi is in big demand to showcase his skills. If you’ve attended a pop-up or charity event in the last 12 months at The Rangoon Tea House, Burma Bistro, The Envoy, The Goethe Institute or the Secretariat to name but a few, then it is more than likely you will have sampled some of Mu Ai’s fabulous food, Chef La Roi developed an early interest in cooking

as he helped his mother in the kitchen of their Bhamo home. The dishes he prepares today are all excellent ambassadors of the food from his home state of Kachin, and many of the ingredients he uses are brought down to Yangon from Myanmar's northernmost state. The family feel of the intimate restaurant is a significant factor in the meal experience, and Chef La Roi seems to be as present in the restaurant as much as he is in the kitchen, the time that he takes to introduce newcomers to Kachin cuisine adds a real touch of personality to the meal.

of the food become as important to the meal as the taste. With enough on the menu to justify several visits, favourites include Quince and Chicken Soup, and the signature dish of Pounded Mutton cured with lime, chilly, Vietnamese coriander, and garlic. For his flavourful food, innovative menu, and incredible attention to detail in presentation, Chef La Roi’s Mu Ai restaurant is a worthy winner of the 2019 Myanmar Restaurant of the Year. Congratulations Chef!

In Kachin Mu Ai means “delicious” and the name of the restaurant rings true, as every dish on the extensive menu is a beautiful combination of flavours prepared using fresh ingredients. Kachin food tends to er on the spicy side, with a hint of sour, but there is a distinctive lack of oil as well, which means the flavours aren’t masked, and the textures

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR Winner: Burma Bistro

I

t’s hard to remember a time when Burma Bistro wasn’t around, so quickly have they become such an integral part of the Yangon dining and nightlife scene that it is easy to forget that having only opened their doors in 2018 they are still technically newcomers. That said, it wasn’t the most auspicious start, and there were a fair few teething problems. Despite some early grumblings from an eager and slightly disappointed Yangon crowd, the Burma Bistro quickly picked up their game, sorted out their initial difficulties and they haven’t looked back since. Burma Bistro has now established itself as a firm favourite with locals, expats and tourists, both the bar on the third floor and restaurant on the second floor are busy every night of the week. They are building an international name for themselves too. Last year they hosted a wonderful pop-up event with celebrated Myanmar Chef Zaw Manesh, from the renowned Lahpet Restaurant in London. They were also handpicked, despite their relatively young age, (though bar years in Yangon are very much like dog years), by the hospitality industry to represent

Myanmar cuisine at the Wonderfruit festival in Pattaya, Thailand.

are good, the presentation is tidy, and the attention to detail is evident in all areas of the business.

The restaurant and bar is nestled in a beautiful heritage building that was saved from demolition with the help of Yangon Heritage Trust. It is worthy of a visit just to enjoy the space, marvel at the impressive colonial columns, and let the opulence and grandeur of the high ceilings, ancient brickwork and beautiful vintage tiles transport you back to another time.

Their Myanmore Newcomer of the Year award is well deserved. The Yangon dining and nightlife connoisseurs can be a fickle and hard to please crowd at times, and the competition is fierce. The fact that Burma Bistro has established themselves as a favourite on the scene so quickly is a testament to the business acumen and hard work of the owners Ma Aye Thuzar Thant and Ko Andy Naing. Congratulations to you both and your team, and we wish you great success in 2019.

The service is exemplary, perhaps too eager at times, but the smartly uniformed staff, (lots of them), are on hand to meet your every need. You are well looked after throughout your visit, from the warm welcome you receive at the top of the stairs, which is a great relief to first-time visitors that they’ve found the right spot having negotiated the ‘interesting’ entrance, to the cheerful goodbyes as you make your way back out into the real world. The food is good, the menu is simple and accessible with an interesting selection of Myanmar inspired dishes with some Asian and Western touches. The cocktails

CHEF OF THE YEAR Winner: Jean Marc Lemmery (Le Planteur)

J

ean-Marc Lemmery, the Executive Chef of Le Planteur, began his culinary journey, as many of the world's best chefs do, by washing plates in a kitchen. The fact that he chose to do this at the age of 39 having had a successful career in physiotherapy is perhaps unusual. However within a few years, his hard work, dedication and desire to learn paid off when he was awarded a Michelin star at his own restaurant, Le Bistrot de l’Alycastre.

has moved twice in that time, before settling in its current beautiful location on Inya Lake. It hasn’t always been plain sailing though, and they have had their ups and downs over the years, though there have been more ups than downs, and they’ve survived through many times of uncertainty. With Chef Jean-Marc Lemmery firmly established at the kitchen pass, the restaurant is back to its best, and some would say they have never been better.

There aren’t many Michelin star Chefs in Yangon, and the Michelin guide is yet to discover Myanmar. But having completed their explorations of Thailand last year, it can only be a matter of time before the red book reviewers are investigating the fine dining scene here. When they do eventually come, they will most certainly be paying very close attention to the menu presented by Chef Lemmery at Le Planteur.

Since joining Le Planteur in 2017, Chef Lemmery has been instrumental in the transformation of their offering, and although his most significant influence has been through the design and the exquisite preparation of his menus, his extensive industry experience and knowledge, and desire for excellence can be seen and felt in the front of house areas too. There is a new energy and vibrancy to the service that had seemed to go missing a few years ago. Gone is the starched and stuffy waiters, the atmosphere is lighter, the ambience refreshing, the staff seem more friendly and welcoming, but they are every bit as attentive and professional as they always have been.

Le Planteur, of course, needs no explanation or introduction. Since Boris pioneered fine dining French cuisine in Yangon over 20 years ago, Le Planteur has been the benchmark upon which many have measured themselves. The restaurant

The menu at Le Planter is interesting, classically French, but there are flashes of inspiration, and hints of Asia and Myanmar shine through many of the dishes. There is almost a sense of experimental dynamism in some of the flavours, and in his own words, the menu at Le Planteur is just as beautiful but “less boring” than perhaps it had been in previous years. It is clear that Chef Lemmery is not afraid to take risks with his cuisine, push the boundaries with his combinations and be more, as he says, “dangerous”. Le Planteur has always been respected for their beautiful presentation, they are now being noted for their more modern approach to fine dining or “bistronomic” as Chef Lemmery calls it As is the case every year, the Myanmore Dining and Nightlife Chef of the year award is a close run race. However, there are only a handful of chefs in the country who are at the top of their game and consistently performing at the best of their ability, and Chef Lemmery has been so instrumental in the transformation of Le Planteur that he has definitely earned his award. Congratulations Chef!

WINE AND SPIRIT AMBASSADOR Winner: Lal Mon Puia (Gekko)

W

hat an absolutely fabulous award this is for Lal Mon “Puia”, the talented Myanmar Mixologist and Bar Manager of Gekko restaurant, and well deserved it is too. Outgoing Wine and Spirits Ambassador Jen Queen must be very proud that she can hand her title to him, keeping it in the family so to speak. It’s a great win for the 57 Below team, and a real demonstration of the importance they place on the capacity building and development of their staff. Puia trained as a bartender for four years at Hakkasan in Abu Dhabi, before returning to Yangon to take up the role as Bar Manager at Gekko. He has been there for three and a half years and although he was already a talented mixologist before he met Jen, she encouraged him to hone his skills and supported his development. His cocktail offering at Gekko is tight, and he draws on Yangon’s rich cultural heritage, creating cocktails using the very best local & seasonal ingredients. A great example of this is his "Move Like Jagger-y" made with Bourbon, Creme de Cassis, Plum Jaggery, Lime, Pineapple & Angostura.

2018 saw Puia mixing cocktails behind the bar at the Polygon stage at this years Wonderfruit music festival in Pattaya, Thailand, for the second year running. He also had the awesome opportunity to take a pop-up guest bartending shift at Nutmeg and Clove (one of the top bars in Singapore) he even found the time to showcase a range of Japanese cocktails at the Tuesday Solution pop up night at Atlas bar in Yangon. He also battled head to head with Union bar’s own Khaing Htun and managed to take the first prize in the Myanmar league of Wild Turkeys “Behind the Barrel” competition with his winning “Wild Tiki” cocktail, made with Wild Turkey Bourbon, Campari, Lime, Lemongrass, Kaffir Lime & Ginger Syrup, & Fresh Pineapple. Puia isn’t just a talented mixologist though, he also has a passion for sharing that talent and nurturing the next generation of Myanmar bartenders. In order to pass on his knowledge, he took a part-time role with the Myanmar bartender school were he taught a syllabus on local ingredients and how to create cocktails that highlight the very best local, seasonal ingredients.

There’s more to Puia’s bar at Gekko than just cocktails, he has developed a decent wine list, and has an extensive selection of Sake and Shochu, and one of the biggest collections of Japanese Whiskies you’ll find in Yangon, including the wonderful awardwinning Yamazaki 12-year-old. But the draw of Puia’s latest cocktail creations keep people coming back time and again. His latest effort just launched is the “40 weight”, a smooth blend of Ballantine's whisky, Sawbwa espresso, cardamom & hazelnut. Though perhaps he’ll create a special cocktail to celebrate his award? Congratulations Puia, and Cheers!

GREEN AWARD Winner: Savoy Hotel Yangon

T

he Savoy Hotel on the corner of Inya road and Dhammazedi was established in 1995 and is considered one of Yangon’s most beautiful heritage boutique hotels. The lush green oasis pool area is a splendid spot to find some peace and shade and escape the Yangon sun, and their recently refurbished Captains bar is a favourite haunt of Yangonites looking for a place to conduct business or somewhere to just relax and unwind over a cocktail, they do a mean burger too. However, despite their fabulous luxury offerings, it is their innovative, progressive and thoughtful approach to environmental sustainability over the past 12-months that has been the most impressive. As the growth and interest in a more environmentally friendly approach to business is becoming more important globally, the efforts of the Savoy Hotel stand out in Myanmar. Their significant contribution to the Yangon ‘green movement’ is very evident, and the presentation of the second ever Myanmore Green Ambassador award is recognition of that effort. Nourish Cafe, the first ever winner of this award, can hand the baton on in the knowledge that it is in safe and reliable hands. The Savoy Hotel has shown a dedication to reducing the carbon footprint of their business and that of their staff and customers, and the number of ticks that they could receive in a checklist of sustainable practices is admirable, and that is down to the commitment of General Manager Tim Reus who has prioritised their green agenda.

MYANMORE magazine #29 March 2019

From being a member of the “Straws Suck” campaign to teaming up with RecyGlo the recycling and waste management organisation. From joining the “refill not landfill” initiative reducing the number of plastic bottles their customers use, to donating their old linens to local schools in order to recycle them into school uniforms. There isn’t an element of the business that hasn’t been assessed and addressed with regards to its environmental impact. Their dedication to using locally sourced products and ingredients, and the resident ducks that are employed in organic and pesticide free insect reduction make all the difference. Their efforts are not limited to business decisions either, the Savoy Hotel provides training and information to all their staff to encourage them to be mindful of their own impact on the environment, and all guests are invited to embrace this approach and to ensure that they don’t negatively impact on Myanmar during their time here. Congratulations to Tim and all at the Savoy Hotel for becoming the 2019 Myanmore Green Ambassadors, we look forward to seeing the implementation of the green projects you have lined up for this year.

Notable mention and congratulations should be made to the other nominated businesses that have promoted a green approach throughout the last year. Arakan Lodge in Rakhine state is entirely powered through solar energy, they have environmentally friendly composting latrines, even the guest houses are built from recycled old traditional Rakhine houses. Sprouts, who also received an honourable mention last year have continued in their quest to reduce the environmental impact of their cafes. From the use of eco-friendly packaging for takeaway items, to significantly reducing the disposable packaging of their suppliers, they have made great strides in implementing a greener approach to business. They have also begun the process of establishing an exciting farm-to-table concept restaurant in Yangon that will have an on site organic farm to supply most of their vegetables with herbs and spices grown using aquaponics. Good luck, and we look forward to hearing more about this amazing restaurant concept in the coming year.

SPECIAL AWARD FOR CONTRIBUTION TO EXCELLENCE Winner: Nikki Baltrop

T

he problem we were always going to have when we launched the Special Award for Contribution to Excellence last year was finding someone who would be able to take on the title from U Ye Htut Win (AKA Sharky) the 2018 winner. However when the nominations started coming in, one name was so surrounded with glowing endorsements it seemed to leap off the page. We kicked ourselves, we needn’t have worried, the Special Award for contribution to Excellence was going to be in safe hands. Although Nikki Barltrop is the Chief Operating Officer of 57 Below and is dedicated to the delivery of excellence in their venues, Gekko, Union bar and the Parami Pizzas. She does seem to spend a lot of time supporting promoting and celebrating the events and achievements of her competitors. Nikki is an ambassador for the industry as a whole, and she is as likely to be found writing honest and constructive foodie reviews about a new restaurant opening as she is to be found waxing lyrical about the latest success of her team.

20

From being a committee member and organiser of the hugely successful European Food Festival to being one of the driving forces with Jen Queen behind “Straws Suck”, Nikki’s influence spreads far wider than her role in 57 Below, and her passion for excellence and her desire to promote quality in the industry is both infectious and admirable. Her dedication to the promotion of sustainability and environmental awareness is not limited to the hugely influential “Straw Suck” campaign. Her involvement in numerous initiatives such as farm-totable, and her role as one of the founding members of “Thant Myanmar”, a grassroots movement aiming to reduce plastic pollution in Myanmar, show a commitment to ensure that she contributes towards making a positive difference in the country. Nikki uses the platform that her position has elevated her to, to do good outside of the industry as well, and she supports many worthwhile causes and local charities. From women's groups, and the “Girls Stand up Programme” to the Doh Eain urban regeneration charity, Nikki seems to be involved

in a lot, all the time. But she is also dedicated to the development and growth of her teams, and she encourages her staff to extend themselves, for example by applying their skills to take part in overseas bartending competitions. She also regularly brings visiting chefs and guest bartenders into Myanmar from outside of the country, all of whom contribute towards the growth of her team and the development of quality across the whole industry. Her dedication to the promotion and development of excellence within her organisation and beyond the boundaries of 57 Below into the industry are key to Nikki being selected for this prestigious award. From her first foray into the world of hospitality and catering as a waitress at Billy's Bar and Restaurant in Harpenden, UK. Nikki has climbed the ladder, travelled the continents and made her way steadily to her position at 57 Below. She is a qualified expert in Sake, she knows a thing or two about the ice luge, and she’s also now the holder of the Special Contribution to Excellence award 2019. Congratulations Nikki and cheers! KBZ ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR Winner: Myat Phoo Wai

W

hen Myat Phoo Wai sat down to figure out what business she could start, she realised she could cook sticky noodles quite well. And that was the beginning of NooDi Noodle Shop.

To compete in a crowded market with a dish as simple as a sticky noodle and to stand out, Myat Phoo Wai carefully works on presentation and packaging, focusing on a target market and creating loyal customers.

NooDi serves clean and tasteful noodles, upgraded from simple Chinese food. All the recipes served at NooDi comes from Myat Phoo Wai herself and all the ingredients are homemade.

If you want to enjoy her noodles in the evening you will have to wait a while as the small restaurant is normally full with customers. But it is worth the wait to try them out!

“Most people consider sticky noodles as a side dish, I believe there is still a certain group of people who love sticky noodles,” she added. As people thinks about Mandalay and its famous food Mandalay Mheeshay and Hto’mont, she wants the same thing for NooDi when they think about Yangon.

With her entrepreneurial spirit and perseverance we are very excited to follow her journey making NooDi into a Yangon household brand!

THE YANGON RESTAURANT

LE PLANTEUR RESTAURANT & BAR

Situated in a quiet leafy corner of People’s Park near the Planetarium, The Yangon restaurant oozes understated opulence with a relaxed semi-formal vibe and sumptuous décor. The restaurant was officially opened on the 7th of July 2016 and the concept is inspired by the owners dining experiences while traveling the world. Artwork adorns the walls and a stunning 2500 piece crystal chandelier floats above diners. The restaurant is light and airy with high ceilings, soft wood finishing and large windows that offer splendid views of the goings-on in the parklands outside. It is certainly one of the best restaurants in the city, although The Yangon isn’t quite at the standard of a Michelin star just yet, it is not far away.

Le Planteur needs little explanation, or introduction. Established in 1998 they have been providing outstanding French cuisine and exceptional service for 20 years and although some may claim that their standards have wavered during that time, with Chef Jean-marc Lemmery at the helm they are undoubtedly back to their best.

What makes it special The lunchtime menu is fantastic quality and fabulous value for money and changes regularly. You’d be hard pushed to find a nicer place to enjoy a luxurious lunchtime rendezvous. The à la carte menu changes regularly depending on the seasonally available ingredients and is inspired by modern European cuisines. Ingredients are sourced and handpicked from local markets with imported ingredients being flown in from Australia, Japan and the U.S. About the Chef Born and raised in Ipoh Old Town, Malaysia. Chef Jack Tor was fortunate to be raised by a family with a very strong food background. He left Malaysia at a young age to pursue his passion for cooking, and has worked with some of Singapore’s finest chefs. When he arrived in Yangon he immediately fell in love with the local fresh produce and enjoys incorporating them into his menu. What makes it special Located in a beautiful 1930’s colonial mansion overlooking Inya Lake you can dine in the restaurant, in the garden area, or on the veranda overlooking the beauty and peacefulness of Inya Lake. The wine bar serves interesting and unusual tapas and offers one of the most extensive wine lists in South East Asia. An incredible thirty-two wines are available by the glass – this is made possible by the use of a specialist wine preservation system. If you get the opportunity to visit their wine cellar, prepare to be blown away, and if Château Pétrus is in your price range then this is the place to be. In the same location there is also Le Bistro @ Le Planteur and a wine bar downstairs. Le Bistro offers high quality, slow cooked European and Mediterranean dishes in an upscale yet casual atmosphere. About the chef Jean-Marc Lemmery, the Executive Chef of Le Planteur, began his culinary journey, as many of the world’s best chefs do, by washing plates in a kitchen. The fact that he chose to do this at the age of 39 having had a successful career in physiotherapy is perhaps unusual. However within a few years, his hard work, dedication and desire to learn paid off when he was awarded a Michelin star at his own restaurant, Le Bistrot de l’Alycastre. Chef Lemmery joined Le Planteur in 2017 having spent some time at the Penthouse in Yangon. 80, University Road, Bahan Township 01514230, 01532124 info@leplanteur.net 11:00am to 11:30pm The are many great restaurants in Yangon and you can see the full Top 100 list over here as well as the MYANMORE Awards 2019 Winners. HOW TO TRAVEL IN MYANMAR ON A TIGHT BUDGET So you love travelling and exploring the countryside yet you don’t have unlimited funds?. There is a strong misconception that travelling in Myanmar is expensive and people believe it’s “cheaper to go to Thailand”. Yet somehow, I always end up spending far more than planned when visiting Bangkok. How to get the most out of your travel budget and support the Myanmar economy (it’s needed!) without becoming so stingy that you’re actually misusing the generosity of the Myanmar people

and you also save the costs for a night in a hotel. Websites like www. myanmarbusticket.com, www.flymya. com and www.oway.com.mm or your local travel agency can help you booking tickets.

Top 10 tips:

2. Compare accommodation prices before you book

1. Use public transport Use public transport for long distances: the Myanmar busses are luxury, air-conditioned, reliable and cover the whole country. Sit back and relax and for less than 15 Usd you’re in 10 hours from Yangon in Bagan. Much cheaper than any flight ticket

38

Compare accommodation prices for your preferred hotel from different channels: online hotel booking websites like www.booking.com, local travel agencies and the hotel itself and find out the best deal. Sometimes a hotel has a special Myanmar resident’s promotion, sometimes the travel

agency has best rates and sometimes your find good offers online. Don’t stress if you see “only 1 room available” on an online travel website; it simply means that this particular company only has 1 room in their portfolio; there might be 30 other rooms available at other sources. 3. Check what is included in your tour package Check what is included in your tour package; usually a difference in price is based on what’s included. Are entrance fees included (it can add up), what meals are included and are there any additional charges for visiting a

big longer at a certain temple or add another one? Will you be picked-up from your hotel or do you have to find your own way there etc? Keep in mind: the more time you spend on a guided tour; the less likely you are spending money on other forms of entertainment (shopping, eating, drinking etc). 4. Use bikes, trains and your own feet for transport Private, chauffeur driven cars are relatively expensive in Myanmar: so choose activities that don’t need private transport: go for trekking or use a bike for sightseeing or take MYANMORE magazine #29 March 2019

a public train to go from A to B (for example from Kalaw to Inle Lake).

shops or paying through the roof for your drinks in the tourist restaurant that had a cheap lunch included in the package. Don’t go for the almost zero dollar trips.

5. Use a guide for when a guide gives added value to learn more

8. Check if you need the extra’s and don’t change your mind

Plan carefully when you need a guide and when you don’t. Guides in Myanmar are a great source of information; not only about history but also to find out more about local ways of living in their area, the local economy, culture and festivals in their area. I definitely recommend to use a local guide for sightseeing; yet, book a guide only for the guided excursions and not as your personal travel assistant (unless you like the extra pampering)

Over the years all kind of extra services have been added to booking engines and you have a choice to pay extra fees to have the possibility to change your booking, add travel insurance, book priority boarding, pay for extra luggage, pay for a price guarantee etc. It’s always best to simply: Make up your mind Book and don’t change anything in your reservation

6. Use “joined-in tours” Instead of booking a private guided excursions that is tailor-made exactly to your own preferences and time, you can choose a “joined-in tour” or a “group tour” as it means that the “group costs” like guide, vehicle etc are born by a group of fellow travellers. Companies like Grasshopper biking tours, Urban adventures and Viator offer group excursions or the Facebook group

9. Slow travel

Bagan cycling trip group photo

Stay an extra day in your destination to explore off the beaten track places nearby as usually the rule “the more you move from one location to the other the more it costs” is very true. Don’t try to add too many different states and divisions in Myanmar within one holiday but simply choose 1 destination and stay a bit longer. 10. Avoid the peak season Travelling during the months November, February and the Christmas & New Year period can raise the cost. The Myanmar green season (May till September) is excellent to travel upcountry and many hotels drop their prices often with 50%

“backpackers myanmar” can connect you with other travellers to share costs. 7. Too cheap can end up being more expensive (or a waste of time) Look for “value for money” and be aware of tours that are ‘too cheap to be true”

Salay

MYANMORE magazine #29 March 2019

Just like anywhere in the world booking the cheapest tour might end up spending a lot of your valuable holiday time sitting in crappy souvenir

With some simple tips as above you can easily go to Bagan by luxury A/C bus, stay for 5 days in a 3 good star hotel with pool, have 2 guided excursions and pay less than 60 Usd / per person per day.

RANGOON BOUTIQUE CAFE A Korean influence in Sanchaung street

S

anchaung street is well known for its famous beer stations, bars, Chinese restaurants, street vendors and fashion houses. Thus it became a crowded street at night where Yangonites go out for a night of beer or either friends gathering. Among those pack places, we found a small cafe in the middle of the street. We were looking for a decent meal, literally every restaurant we’ve tried but not Rangoon Boutique Cafe which is sandwiched together with a Total fitness gym and a big old tree inside. With yellow lights and a coffee bar, the cafe settles with tiny squared tables, a bench on the front with board games and galleries of different coffees on the other side of the wall. The menu caught our attention first since the first catalogue was a coffee special. The the second one follows with a fusion of Asian dishes; Kimchi Fried Rice, Bibimbap, Thai Fried Rices, Terrayakis, Cheesy Chicken Rices with different sauces, Bulgogi grills, soups and stews. For the starter, we ordered Prawn tempura (3,500Ks) and Pork salad with lettuce (3,500Ks). The prawn tempura came in first, hot and freshly fried, crisp and delightful. The pork salad arrived a few minutes later, with a big plate of lettuce, kimchi salad and onion rings together. The pork smells good, soft and sweet. The delicious part was wrapping the meats in the lettuce with kimchi—a Korean way to eat the pork salad. Then we tried Korean Bibimbap (3,000Ks) which came after a few minutes upon our order. The taste

was surprisingly appetizing which was sweet and sour. My main dish, Cheesy Chicken Rice with Lemon Pepper Sauce (3,000Ks) took a bit long to take in but the friendly staffs kept making apologies for the gap. I thought there might be some problem in the kitchen which was not my concern at all. But when it came, my expectation fell down for a second that it was a small plate, and all cool down. The cheese covered the rice was cold, the rice and the lesser chicken, but the broccoli was instantly cooked – still it tasted good!

the vanilla ice-cream with a brownie (25,00Ks) – my favorite brownie in town! It was freshly reheated, soft and with the vanilla, it was an amazing wonderful palate. Overall, we really enjoyed the meals but we didn’t have a chance to try the coffee since it was a dinner so I am looking forward to it till next time.

THE ALL-NEW PREMIUM 7-SEATER SUV NISSAN TERRA Nissan has finally filled a crucial gap in its SUV segment, taking aim at knocking some of its traditionally formidable and popular by default competitors off their perches. The Nissan Terra, teched up, comfortable, ruggedly handsome and ready for battle, is well worth a second and third look in your hunt for the ideal all-rounder vehicle.

T

he SUV revolution that kicked off about two decades ago, is showing no sign of going out of fashion as the segment continues to grow in popularity and refinement. The initial appeal of “Sport Utility Vehicles” was two-fold. SUVs were an excellent alternative to the ultimate family car segment, “estate cars” or “station wagons” - basically stretched out sedans. They also made a more viable choice over minivans, which handled like lumber wagons especially on windy days. Fast forward to modern days for this people and cargo carriers, technological advances have made them much more fuel efficient, better handling, lighter and most importantly far safer than they were in the early- to mid-90s.

tarmac, the Terra chassis is based on Nissan’s Navara pickup truck, which means a heritage of proven reliability of the full ladder-frame construction – the way all cars were built before the lighter and cheaper monocoque onepiece construction became popular in the 70s. As good as that design approach is, a truly tough vehicle needs body on frame.

and contrasty LED lights all around, including the fog lamps and Daytime Running Lights. And if your hands are full when accessing the rear tailgate, you only need to wave your foot under the rear bumper to open it. Interior appearance, quality and features

Exterior appearance Like a good SUV should be, the exterior is a bit butch with strong shoulders and haunches, but with plenty of curves. And it is available in a big range of colours, from subtle greys to sporty red or yellow. Bright

Leather theatre style seats (with 8-way power adjustments for the driver!) and a handsome centre console make the interior a pleasant place for the driver and passengers to be – especially for the first two rows. A dedicated button, ‘1-Touch

Remote Fold and Tumble Seat’ quickly folds the 2nd row seats to allow 3rd row easy entry and exit. Best part is the back two rows fold flat easily for hauling long cargo. The all bells and whistles infotainment system can be controlled from the steering wheel, and there is a flip down entertainment screen for the rear passengers and separate climate controls fore and aft so everyone is kept at the appropriate temperature. Drivetrain A 7-speed automatic transmission (with manual mode) takes care of the ratios and makes the most of acceleration and, almost ironically,

Nissan Terra Overview Enter the latest offering from one of the world’s biggest and well proven manufacturers in this popular and competitive segment. The Nissan Terra (which is Latin for land/earth/dirt or firmament) slots firmly between the brands smaller car-based X-Trail and the hefty “full-sized” Patrol (though the Terra is not a vehicle you’d call small anywhere outside of Texas). Unlike many “crossover” vehicles that looks like off-roaders, and might start falling to bits if you took them off the

fuel economy, with 2 -wheel drive and high and low geared 4-wheel drive – the latter for nastier off-road conditions, especially when you turn-on the Electronic Locking Rear Differential to power both rear wheels equally to boost grip and keep you moving forward.. The engine is a powerful 2.5 litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel with 190hp – and more importantly, 450nm of diesel-fuelled torque – enough to get most tough jobs done.

The TERRA is ideal for this region as its top ground clearance, at 225 millimetres, reduces the risk of damage from rough, uneven roads and from driving in flooded areas, and in a worst case scenario, Terra’s Zone Body Construction (combines Front Crushable impact absorbing zone structure with high-strength cabin structure to mitigate impact and provide protection for you and your passengers) coupled with six airbags to cushion the driver and passengers in the event that things go horribly wrong.

Suspension and Handling The suspension is multilink coil springs that provide decent on-road comfort, but can take a beating from the rocks and gullies of off-road driving. Most pickup based SUV tend to be a bit bouncy but this maintains good comfort and body control, as well as very good sound insulation – which makes a big difference on longer journeys. The brakes are hefty discs out front, with big drums brakes in the back, consistent with its class and very effective, and the rack and pinion power assist steering, while not sports car precise, is adequate to the varied tasks the Terra is designed to tackle. Safety Features As mentioned earlier, modern SUVs are much safer than they were a couple of decades ago. Nissan has thrown the gamut at the Terra, with Lane Departure Warning (for when you nod off or can’t keep your eyes off your passenger’s legs), Hill Start Assist, and Hill Descent Control for significantly reducing the fear factor of heading down steep slippery gravelled slopes. Then there are the four cameras termed as Intelligent Around View Monitor (including a baffling bird’s-eye view) for handling tricky parking and tight off-road maneuvers; plus Motion Object Detection feature, that when active detects anything that moves which is not in your view. Also equipped are Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Child Safety Lock, 4-Eye Rear Parking sensors, Reverse Camera, Anti-Theft system Immobiliser with VSS Alarm and Follow-Me-Home function. Outstanding features at a glance 1. Robust full frame, not monocoque construction 2. Strong proven reliable turbo diesel engine 3. Good handling. Minimal body roll and bounce belies its pickup truck underpinnings 4. Plenty of room for passengers and cargo with easily reconfigurable seats 5. Able to handle off-roading, unlike many so-called SUVs that are afraid to get their tyres dirty. 6. The full range of modern safety features. It is competitive out there in the world of SUVs, but the Terra is an all new offering, which has leapfrogged it over many of its aging competitors. Make a comparison with the others, and you’ll find that this one ticks all the boxes, especially in top trim – and at a very competitive price.

And even if you never get around to going on that off-roading weekend adventure, the Terra’s interior comfort, tech, practicality and road manners make it stand on its own as a purely tarmac vehicle that will serve urban and highway your needs very well. But it’s nice to know that if you want to chase gazelles and rabbits through the underbrush, or plough handily through a muddy flood, you can always do that too.
