MYANMORE was started in the fall 2012 to ensure information about events and what to do in Yangon is easily accessible in a good format to everyone. To be the ultimate guide to Yangon. Today, we are proud to provide daily updated information online, weekly and quarterly guides in both print and digital format, printed maps and with more to come! None of this would have been possible without a hardworking team, supportive advertisers and our readers who share feedback and ideas with us.
dining & nightlife guide / august 2014
If you haven’t seen all of them yet, we have: The Weekly guide keeps you informed of the upcoming events in Yangon. Now in print for over a year and can be found all over the city. The Yangon Map makes hotels, restaurants, bars, art galleries, shopping centers and tourist attractions easy to find. The Dining & Nightlife guide is now in its 2nd edition providing all the information you need to enjoy the best food, drink and party venues around town. More soon-to-be released guides will give insider tips to truly experience Yangon, share insights about the culture and the country, as well as provide a useful directory of anything practical from hospitals to tailors, art galleries to Business centers. The Weekly Newsletter comes out twice a week, providing you with a summary of the best events and articles that you might have missed, delivered straight to your inbox. MYANMORE Card is your key to unlock even more of Yangon to enjoy and experience. Get discounts, special deals and unique trials. And of course, our website www.myanmore.com which does all of the above and much MORE! Share your experience with us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with #myanmore ! If you have any questions or inquiries, please email us at info@myanmore.com. We would be glad to help!

editorial
So this is it, the second edition of the Dining & Nightlife guide is officially OUT! It is intended just for you, dear reader, to make the most of the dynamic gastronomical and nightlife scene in Yangon. It isn’t easy for anyone to know the options out there, especially in this period of rapid transformation. To give you an idea, the guide has doubled it’s size within 6 months as a result of the increase in new openings and events! But that’s why we are here, to do all the researching and figure it out for you. You are most welcome! To be honest, it took a whole lot of work to finish this edition of the Dining and Nightlife guide; it was exhausting at times and challenging most of the time. I am therefore particularly proud to present our reviews to you today. We’ve sorted over 200 venues by category so you can easily find what you need. The concept is somewhat different to the January edition because votes for MYANMORE Awards take place once a year. For this edition, we focused on listing the most popular places as well as the new-comers, without ranking them in any way. We’ve added information like Wifi and credit card facilities, and included articles and interviews. We even went out of our way to put together the list of Happy Hours in town! (Woop Woop!) We’ve also prepared something even better...
You will notice our MYANMORE Privilege Card logo next to some venue listings. This means that members get exclusive deals - up to 50% off, or offers such as free drinks with your meal - at those selected places. The card doesn’t just get you privileges on food and drinks, it also applies to spas, travel and just about anything that’s going on in Yangon. To sign up, head to our website at www.myanmore.com/ yangon/card/. My dream for the guide now is to see it come to life in your hands. I want you to go for it: cross out and circle venues, cover it with notes and comments, scribble the phone number of your date on it! It would make me so happy to see that you are making it yours. But please care to share your stories on our website and remember that each additional review will help someone down the line. Not everyone will be lucky enough to have their own Dining & Nightlife guide! I am looking forward to read your comments and reviews on our website and Facebook page and am eager to see your photos (food, venues, parties but also pictures of your worn out guides!) on Instagram. Finally, it is time for you to EN-JOY!

From local cuisine to Asian food, to anything that can be loosely defined as “Western”, Yangon’s culinary scene must surely be the winner in Southeast Asia’s “Most Improved Category.” As more and more different nationalities pour into the city, many bring their nation’s culinary expertise with them. Today, the city is home to restaurants offering practically every type of food you can imagine, with many more opening up on a regular basis. So, look closely enough and you should be able to find almost everything you fancy!

THE SWEET TASTE OF SUCCESS
YOU ARE THE GRAND WINNER OF THIS YEAR’S BATTLE OF THE CHEFS COMPETITION ORGANIZED BY THE MYANMAR CHEFS’ ASSOCIATION. CONGRATULATIONS! HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THIS VICTORY I’m really excited about this. At first, I joined this competition out of curiosity. Then I found out about the education aspect of this competition, and I really started to invest myself; to learn from this experience, as well as share my knowledge with others and with an audience.
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF I’m 34, recently married with one baby boy. I learned cooking from my mother; after high school I went to the Hotel and Tourism school in Kandawgyi. After that I started working at the Traders Hotel. I then went to Middle East for 10 years - Dubai, Kuwait, Qatar. I chose to come back in October 2012 as there were still a lot of things to improve in Myanmar in the culinary field. There is not much competition yet; I hope this sector will develop soon.
ARE THERE ANY PROJECTS OR IDEAS YOU WOULD LIKE TO ENCOURAGE IN THE CULINARY SECTOR IN MYANMAR After this chef competition, there will be other competitions organized by the MCA that I’d love some of my staff to keep on joining. It’s not about the winning, but about the experience. Some of my colleagues also took part in the competition and had even won the bronze medal.
WHAT PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW I’m currently working on another competition, a culinary challenge, which will take place in Pattaya, Thailand. I will be part of a team representing the Myanmar National Team. There will be 4 Myanmar Chefs and 1 Team Leader. We will have to work mostly with Thai and Asian ingredients. I really hope we bring a prize back to Myanmar and show the world Myanmar’s potential.
IS THERE A CHEF THAT YOU LOOK UP TO Chef Ryan Son Son, from USA. He was here for 2 months to help my team before the new Executive Chef arrived. He really helped me, guided me, and supported me a lot.
WHAT SPECIAL MEAL WOULD YOU PREPARE FOR A SPECIAL SOMEONE US Beef - it’s very juicy and so tender -with some pasta, vegetables and nicely assorted sauce.
WHAT IS THE ONE INGREDIENT YOU MUST HAVE IN YOUR KITCHEN Salt! No dish can be cooked without salt!
HOW DO YOU ENJOY YOUR FREE TIME Going out with my family and my friends, enjoying some nice meals around the city.
Chef Shwe Moe Tha and his culinary team won the BEST SUNDAY BRUNCH AWARD for Sule Shangri-la Hotel at the recent MYANMORE AWARDS 2014.

HAS THIS COMPETITION AND MEDIA ATTENTION AFFECTED YOUR LIFE OR WORK IN ANY WAY It has surely helped my career because people have come to know who I am and who I work for. Some people started recognizing me. I’ve been getting lots of encouragements and support from my colleagues.
19 The number of restaurants and cafÊs in Yangon has exploded in recent years. As more and more different nationalities pour into the city, many bring their nation’s culinary expertise with them. Yangon certainly does not have the variety of other major cities in the region yet , but it certainly has more variety in terms of restaurants than it ever did before. So, look closely enough and you should be able to find almost everything you fancy!

local Myanmar’s cuisine is as diverse as its hundreds of different ethnic groups. Some of the dishes include the famous seafood of Rakhine State, Shan noodles and the Burmese mohinga. There are other meals with influences from surrounding countries that have become part of the everyday life in the country, such as chapatis from India or a myriad of dishes from China. Therefore, it is likely that each restaurant will have plenty of variety in the dishes it offers. Many of the restaurants listed here offer a combination of local and Southeast Asian cuisine. 999 Shan Noodle House ? No. 130 B 34th Street, Kyauktada Township

A great selection of mostly Thai and Myanmar food set in an attractive colonial home. It’s a well-designed restaurant that includes a balcony and a garden. The dishes are particularly tasty, especially when you consider the price. The main draw for many is that this was once the office of the country’s independence hero, Aung San and upstairs are a few artefacts from his time in the building.

MYANMORE’s favourite . . . Street Eats!
25
Trying out the local street food is certainly part of the Myanmar experience, bearing in mind that choosing the correct stall is essential. We do not want you getting ill, so here are some things to consider: Credit: Julian Ray Photography
dining & nightlife guide / august 2014
- Eat where the locals do: a crowded food stall is usually a good sign - Look for obvious signs of questionable hygiene (dirty water used to wash dishes, cook not washing hands, etc) - If you have a weak stomach, it’s highly recommended to stay clear of street stalls altogether - Food stalls are on nearly every street corner, so if in doubt, don’t take the risk. Food stalls are often very temporary, so check out our website and forum for updated recommendations. However, here are a few of our favourites: Corner of Bo Ga Lay Zay and Merchant Street, under a blue tent Watch them skilfully mix many varieties of different spices and sauces to make the perfect tasty meal just for you. Their Shan noodles (‘shan kouw swe’) are a highlight. Corner of Bo Yar Nyunt Road and Yaw Min Gyi Road (Southwest corner)

A discreet place that only opens at night, a great mix of flavours to go with your Shan Noodles. Highly recommended. Top 10 Myanmar Foods Myanmar food often doesn’t get the same well-received reputation that dishes from other countries in the region receive - namely India, China and Thailand. But with influences from across South Asia and the Southeast Asia region, as well as its unique ingredients, those who leave the country without having sampled the country’s food will be missing out. Mohinga
Burmese Curry Normally much oilier than its Indian equivalent, a Burmese Curry is usually a relativelyrich sauce. Chicken is the go-to main ingredient, but other options include pork, shrink, beef and mutton. The best part of a Burmese curry though is the selection of side dishes that come with it.
Shan Noodles (Shan Kouw Swe) Despite having originated in far-away Shan State, this noodle dish has very much made its home in the Burmese-strongholds of the country. Served in a noodle soup, ingredients usually added are vegetables, chilli and marinated chicken or pork. A personal highlight of the local food.
Credit: Julian Ray Photography
The national dish Mohinga is, in its simplest form, a fish broth packed with rice noodles, eggs, fritter and the occasional fish head. But don’t let that put you off. It may not sound, or even look, like the most appetising of meals, but the people of Myanmar have perfected the art, adding all the right ingredients to give you a taste explosion. There are a variety of ways to make it, but most dishes include hard-boiled eggs, dried chilli and an abundance of vegetables.
Credit: Julian Ray Photography
Nangyi Thoke One of the few dry noodle dishes available in Myanmar, Nangyi Thoke is a thick, round noodle that is usually served with slices of chicken. Additions include egg, chilli and lemons.

Tea Leaf Salad (Lehpet Thouk)
Grilled Fish Credit: Julian Ray Photography
Many new arrivals to Yangon could be forgiven for thinking that tea shouldn’t be edible, but those who sit down to a delicious dish of ‘lehpet thouk’ will realise they were very wrong indeed. Like most Myanmar dishes, it is an concoction of different flavours that give it a unique taste. It is also considered as a stimulant.
Best known in Yangon for being cooked in Chinatown, the Grilled Fish is available at dozens of barbecue stalls across the city, and is just as tasty in just about all of them. Marinated in lots of different flavours, it is the lemon on the meat that really stands out, and is a terrific, cheap option wherever you are in the country.
Shan Rice (Shan Htamin) Again, densely-packed with flavours and ingredients, Shan Rice (Shan Htamin) includes rice that has usually been cooked with flakes of fish and oil. Other additions to it are vegetables, garlic and minced pork or chicken.
Coconut Noodles (Ohn No Kouw Swe) A brilliantly subtle and lightly-curried meal where the coconut used to cook the noodles contrasts brilliantly with the protein option (usually chicken). As usual, variations are made, and additions can include lime, chilli and fish sauce.
Credit: Julian Ray Photography
Animal’s Innards Certainly not one for the faint-stomached, these tiny stalls are seen across the country and are incredibly popular among the local people. Various types of innards of animals (usually pigs) are boiled in a hot pot and then eaten on a stick. Definitely one for the type of visitor who wants to try everything.
dining & nightlife guide / august 2014
While predominantly places to sit and sip tea, Myanmar’s tea shops also offer a variety Credit: Julian Ray Photography of snacks. Usually puffy and always sweet, they are particularly enjoyable when dunked into your sweet tea. Other tea shops serve naan breads or potato curries.

by Ronin McGeown Have you gotten over the kisseyface noises? Those tight puckers that signal to the restaurant staff that you’re ready for some attention? It’s a taboo sound where I come from, but for here the noise means service. There’s no shouting, wild gesturing, or fruitless “excuse me”, “mingalaba” or “hello!”. 19th Street Chinatown is filled with these noises and rightfully so. Tables are spilling over with people, food and beer, while the staff are playing WWF wrestling in the street. With that kiss in the air, there’s the pounce. Your wish, is their service. Yeah, they might forget an order or three, but having someone insisting on pouring your beer, lighting your cigarette, and serving food plates with the double handed Burmese-respect is really an original experience. Tourists come for that experience, locals come for the whisky, and expats come for business, networking and unwinding. Each group is surrounded by BBQ plates of all kinds of seafood and local staples. Tables are quickly littered with Mojitos and beers, Ruby Red cigarettes ‘ta bwey’ and fortresses of empty mugs. If there’s a desire that your restaurant doesn’t provide, just order it from next-door and they’ll deliver. The street life oozes with activity. Walking food-hawkers, rolling lottery venders, human balloon dispensers and the seasonal bags of giant grasshoppers balanced on the top of heads, all manoeuvers through the street. It’s the Cheers bar of Yangon, the BBQ Street where everyone knows your face and wants you to come join them. Staff welcome you into their seats while buskers enjoy their Broadway. The regular beggars are bested by the kids that bang out bamboo beats on the street, and that one woman with her daughter who belt out such beautiful songs. The BBQ skewer stands are there for you to walk up and choose your meal. If that doesn’t interest you, ask for a menu. For the health nut, the deep fried ribs or soft-shell crab are incredible, but need to be shared as a full plate probably equals one heart attack. Grilled fish with a side of crispy Japanese beancurd works wonders for those looking for a break from the oily Myanmar food. For an explanation on why ‘mutton’ is always on the menu, and not sheep, in Myanmar it actually means goat. It’s delicious, and has scaled my taste metre to join the top contenders of the world’s tastiest animal. Order it with some quail egg, Shan potatoes and skewers of garlic. Toss on a bunch of veggie options for the making of a hot salad and you have a tasty and cheap meal. Mix and match your plates, skewers, beer and cigarettes to fit your own personal tastes. Find a cosy spot on a plastic chair and enjoy the life.

This small family restaurant offers healthy Thai dishes at a very reasonable price. The setting is basic and relaxed, and the owner is as welcoming as the food is tasty. Located in the eastern part of the city, it is a nice place to go for a quiet lunch or a casual diner. Besides, there is no need to stick to the menu; tell the owner what’s on your mind and she’ll whip up the perfect customised dish just for you.

A personal recommendation as one of the best Thai restaurants in town, hidden away down a narrow alley of Dhamazedi Road (close to the junction with U Wisara), Legacy may not look much from the outside but it’s terrific selection of dishes as well as its fresh ingredients make it a must-visit for foodies looking for some Thai cuisine in Myanmar. Mai Thai has been put to the taste-test time and again by folks from different walks of life and has passed most times with flying colours. Thai dishes are served with a dash of Chinese fusion, and servings come in hearty portions, making them perfect for sharing. Service can be a little slow, and, just as a warning, the food is sometimes quite spicy.
Suzuki has no frivolous pretentions : they serve good food at a reasonable price, in a clean environment. Food options are mainly Thai, but Chinese and some Western dishes can be ordered too. Very well located next to Sule, it is a nice place to sit down for a while for a cheap beer, when the city get a little bit all too much.

A SIMPLE LIFE MADE EXTRAORDINARY Leena Salim braves the immense rain and massive deluge on 52nd street to find Thazin Wah, the owner of Green Gallery - Thazin Wah aka Bo - and discovers how a simple trip back has changed her life.
TELL US ABOUT YOU People call me Bo but I actually have many names. As many names as I’ve had lives! I’m from Mawlamyine, been living in Thailand and just came back to Myanmar last year. I never thought that I would actually have the opportunity to live in Myanmar again. But here I am, so happy, so proud to be in my country again!
WHY DID YOU COME BACK TO MYANMAR? I’ve been waiting for Myanmar to open up for so long. I had hopes but frankly, I doubted this would happen any time soon. When it finally did -in 2012- I came back for a short visit. During these few weeks I’m pretty sure I explored every street of Downtown, searching in vain for some nice and affordable place to relax and enjoy healthy food (Myanmar food is quite oily, I’m sure you’ve noticed by now!). This trip really opened my eyes to all the things that people living or coming here cannot find. I felt as if it was my duty; to come back and contribute to my country’s development.
WHY “GREEN GALLERY”? “Green Gallery” is my ode to the city. When I re-discovered Yangon, it struck me how vegetationfilled and beautiful the city was. I spent many hours just admiring the old buildings, the people and their ways of life as well as the few discordant signs of modernity. I feel like Yangon is one big
Overwhelming! I didn’t make any announcement for an opening, I just opened, just like that - rock-style! 6 customers came. I was so excited and happy, yet so worried that they would be disappointed.
HOW MANY PEOPLE IN THE GREEN TEAM? Haha, well so far I’ve been doing everything on my own. I tried to employ some staff but they would show up at random hours - if at all - and simply could not be relied upon. I have to admit it is challenging and tiring, so I’m planning to get someone in to assist me as soon as I can...and maybe even take a few days off ! Until then, my passion for hospitality and the smiles of my customer keep me going.
IN SUCH A SHORT TIME, YOU’RE NUMBER 3 ON TRIPADVISOR. HOW DOES IT FEEL? You have to ask my customers and friends. When I first knew about it I was Number 18 and I was already so happy. Then it jumped to Number 7, oh God… and now Number 3! I thought it was going to take at least two to three years. I’ve only been open since November.
WHY DO YOU THINK PEOPLE LIKE GREEN GALLERY SO MUCH? WHAT IS THE MAGIC FORMULA? I think they feel at home here at the Gallery. It’s not like a typical restaurant environment; it’s casual, a place to chill and relax. I listen to my customers. They tell me what they feel like eating and together we figure out what would make them happiest. In my place, there is no need to follow the menu, really. My regular customers have their habits now, and I know their preferences. We talk and they share their story with me. These things matter. I care about people, you know. Maybe that’s why.
FUTURE PLANS. I would like to fix a few things in the kitchen and do up the restaurant. Add more Thai curries. A coffee corner. A bar for fresh juices and smoothies! I also want to start more regular events to add to the GREEN PARTY I host every third week of the month. I want to have a grand opening too, and from there use the space of the restaurant to host photo and painting exhibitions. The Green Gallery would then be complete!! Laughs.
Green Gallery is currently sitting pretty strong at Number 3 on Tripadvisor. Will we see it at the top spot in the near future? We bet you two bowls of Green Curry it will! SEDUCING MYANMAR ONE PIZZA AT A TIME Sarah Pandia opens up her taste buds to the delectable world of Italian trattoria cuisine and finds out where the best pizzas can be found. She meets Chef Francesco Crispo. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO LIVE AND WORK IN YANGON My name is Francesco Crispo. I’m from Napoli, Italy and I’ve travelled the world, mostly for work. I’ve lived and worked in the Dominican Republic, Spain, Italy, Scotland, Turkey, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Thailand and now Myanmar. I arrived a few months ago after accepting a project for a Trattoria-style restaurant in Yangon, Parami Pizza. I’ve been to Asia before, and working in Myanmar seemed like an appealing and challenging project in a developing economy. TELL US ABOUT PARAMI PIZZA Parami Pizza is a restaurant with pizza as a specialty of course. In Italy, each Chef has his own Italian pizza recipe: Napolitan, Romana… I can’t wait to try all these styles and see which one seduces our customers most. Most of our ingredients come from Italy: the flour, the mozzarella, the dried tomatoes. Parami Pizza will be a diverse spot where you can come and buy Mediterranean ingredients at our shop, as well as have breakfast, lunch, a snack or dinner! The cuisine will be simple, light, fresh. Our wish is to promote Italian food, and we will have some occasional tasting too. HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER RESTAURANTS IN YANGON In the few months I’ve been here, I’ve mostly seen English pubs, and restaurants. We would like to be the place where you can find the best fresh food, and a friendly Trattoria; a place to socialize and meet new people.
WHAT IS THE BEST PIZZA YOU’VE EVER HAD In Napoli, there is this place I used to go to - Pizzeria Costa in Porta Capoana, close to the Central Train Station. There is always a line of people waiting to get their pizza. It’s in the street. Pizza is firstly a street food, it’s a popular food. But it doesn’t stop even Queens from eating pizza : Regina Pizza! WHAT ARE SOME BIZARRE PIZZA TOPPINGS THAT ACTUALLY WORK I’ve seen pineapple, corn and also bacon, guacamole or unusual vegetables; you can try anything. There are new ideas every day to take into consideration. It’s important to study what the customers like. HOW DO YOU TEST THE QUALITY OF YOUR INGREDIENTS Filiera - in Italian it means history of the ingredients. For me, it’s important to know where they come from. For vegetables, the closer they are, the better. WHAT IS THE ONE INGREDIENT YOU MUST HAVE IN YOUR KITCHEN Not just one! Tomato, extra virgin olive oil, Parmesan and basil are a must! The basic Mediterranean ingredients. HOW DO YOU ENJOY YOUR FREE TIME I love walking around, I love Burmese people, I speak with them and learn about the culture. After Dubai and Istanbul, this place looks like it has been frozen in time. I have to adapt, be flexible and find ways to overcome obstacles. HOW DO YOU FEEL NOW I’m very happy and enthusiastic about being in Yangon. I’m happy to meet more people\ - all kinds of people. I can’t wait to welcome everyone in my new “home” Parami Pizza Soon, I will invite everyone to try my delicious cuisine, pizzas and pastas!
Paramai PIzza, brought to you by the same folks who owned Union Bar and Gekko, is the latest wood-fired Italian trattoria to hit Yangon.

THE BUNS - The size of the bun has to be in proportion to the patty and other contents of the burger. It’s fine if you want to be fancy with multigrain, sesame seed etc. Grilled or toasted buns are a plus.
THE PATTY - This is the star of the show. Of course it doesn’t have to be beef all the time; it just must have the guts to take the place of a beef patty. You can put a brick in there, for all we care – just make sure it’s not overcooked. Oh and plus point if we’re slobbered with burger juice.
INGREDIENTS - Of course a star has to have its own posse – lettuce, tomato, onion bla bla bla… BUT you get our attention instantly when there’s some thought and creativity involved. Again, creativity is wasted if the end results doesn’t work.
SAUCE - The sauce is an added compliment – like the red velvet curtains that closes a great performance. It’s not a requirement but it makes it complete. CHEESE - The more variety, the better. Yes, cheese varieties are kinda rare in Myanmar so we do appreciate them very much. Processed cheese is NOT cheese. No discussion. ADD ONS - If there are options for add-ons, we love it already. We don’t necessarily want them at all, just knowing that there are options makes us happy. Mushrooms, bacon, eggs… fill in the blanks please. So there you go – basic rules to what constitutes a good burger. That’s not a lot, right? Here are some of the highlights to our BURGER GUIDE:
UNION BAR & GRILL t 0931018272, 09 250 355 064, 09 420 101 854,
Union Bar & Grill is one of the more popular places in Yangon among expats who are looking for Western food. Their Union and Cheeseburger, both served with lettuce, tomato, raw onion and a small set of crispy, well-seasoned fries, added to the allure. Accompanied with brie, truffle mayonnaise and smoky ketchup, the Union Burger sets itself apart. The patty was mildly spiced, adding to the overall delightful taste, though it came leaning more towards rare than the requested medium done. The Cheeseburger on the other hand, although lacking some of the visual pizzazz of the Union Burger, the patty was just as juicy. The size of the burgers makes them easy to eat with your hands. Ketchup and mayonnaise are served separately.

hormone-free 50% Australian Wagyu beef, slices of bacon, grilled Shan caramelised onions and cheddar cheese stacked in between homemade brioche bread. The beef, done medium rare, has a good texture and just melts in your mouth. Comes with a side of salad, tomato, onions, gherkin and fries. The Organic Myanmar Style Chicken Burger is akin to having a local chicken curry in a burger form but without the excessive oil. The chicken meat is 100% meat with not an ounce of fat with a spread of tomato salad on top. This is a much-welcomed contrast to the accompanying crunchiness of the pennywort salad, done Myanmar-style. Also comes with a side of fries.

Savoy Burger is an interesting combo of a thick slab of beef patty sandwiched in between 2 pieces of rosti. The meat is medium done and the potato pancakes are crunchy with a firm filling. They don’t break when bitten into. Smoked pork belly and cream cheese with chopped onions gives this burger a certain zing. The Fajitas Burger is another winner made of pieces of Mexican avocado, slivers of red peppers, onion and tomatoes, a decent-sized beef patty and Caesar Salad sauce. The avocadoes, red peppers and onions gives this burger a rich yet balanced taste. Buns are toasted. The patties are done just right, French-style. Both burgers passed the “grabbable” test- they don’t fall apart after the first bite. Fajitas burger is served with fries. Savoy burger is served with lettuce on the side.

It’s almost impossible to meet an expat who doesn’t know about Sule Shangri-La, the Ex-Traders Hotel. But how many would go there for their burgers? The Signature and the Crispy Chicken Breast Burger are both as tasty as you might expect them to be. When the Signature Burger arrived, the word well- balanced came to mind. It’s a juggling act of beef patty, bacon, chicken, ham, egg, salad, gherkin and bread. Despite all that, the burger is easily handled
with two hands. The bacon is delightfully salty and crispy; good enough to be enjoyed on its own. The Crispy Chicken Burger is made up of two chunky pieces of fried chicken. A surprising and unexpected find is the caramelized pineapple, giving the burger a touch of tropical freshness. Both burgers are served with a small bowl of lettuce and another bowl of outstanding deep-fried potato wedges. Ketchup, Dijon mustard and mayo accompany each plate. As a bonus, the chicken burger comes with a mini bowl of coleslaw.

We were told that 50th Street Bar had just launched a new Vegetarian Dhal Burger – how can we resist? The Vegetarian Dhal Burger is undoubtedly our new favourite burger in town. Granted, it may not sound attractive to meat lovers but for those who are vegetarians or who want something different in a burger, this would be it. The patty, made of dhal (chickpeas), is of a good consistency and is well- mashed. Easy, fast, filling and for a change -, no mess. Wiped everything clean, thank you very much. Lettuce, tomato, sweet chilli and mayonnaise make up the rest of the burger. Sesame seed buns are slightly toasted and come with a serving of fries and salsa on the side.

terrific social enterprise that train and educate disadvantaged women, the second is their food, which is utterly fantastic. There’s a terrific variety of baked goods; all made to quite wonderful standards.

Ask any long-term Yangon resident and they will tell you that there was a time when there were few options available if one wanted a drink late into the night. Apart from a some options, the term ‘Nightlife’ in Yangon barely existed. That has changed drastically; more and more venues are opening up, while the existing venues are busier as the country opens itself up and Yangon develops as its social hub.

nightlife events There was once a time when Yangon’s party-seekers’ options were limited to one or two venues. However, in the past year or so, things have changed quite rapidly ; there are now regular events held throughout the week. As mentioned, Yangon changes so quickly ; these events are correct at the time of going to print. Currently, these are the events that are hosted on a weekly basis, while other venues tend to change their weekly events on a more regular occasion. To keep up to date with the latest goingons, subscribe to our newsletter, visit MYANMORE.com, or grab your copy of the weekly guide from many popular venues in town. At time of print, here are some of our favourites: Monday

This rooftop bar is quickly emerging as a popular late-night spot, if only for the breathtaking view it offers of nearby Shwedagon. The layout could do with a little work, the service is hardly excellent and there are times when the music doesn’t entirely fit the otherwise laidback feel, but you’ll be hard pressed to find a better view elsewhere in the city. Also provides shisha.

Choose from a wide selection of drinks such as the wasabi-infused vodka, gummy bear-infused gin or maybe the signature cocktail, dubbed the “Yangon Cocktail” served over ice in a lowball glass.
You must be a member to enjoy the club facilities...except on Fridays where folks just fill up the area very quickly. There’s usually a live band playing outdoors. The only thing missing is a BBQ pit to complement the lake, we reckon.

pub crawls New to the city? Not sure where to start in terms of nightlife? We’ve put together a range of different drinking experiences that can make your drinking experience in the city easier, and better. Things change quickly in Yangon, with so many bars opening, but those listed below should make a good starting point if you and your friends are looking for some good places to experience the city afterdark. The Downtown Experience Start the evening with a civilised drink in the impressive Gallery Bar at Sule Shangri-la Hotel (corner of Sule Pagoda and Bogyoke Aung San roads), where you can grab a 2 for 1 drink before 8pm. After that, take a quick venture into the Indian Quarter on Anawratha Road where there are plenty of options for cheap, delicious eats. From here, it’s a 10 minute walk to 19th Street (turn left at Anawratha road and 19th Street) where there are plenty of bars to finish the evening in a friendly, lively atmosphere.
A weekday with a visitor Most people living in Yangon will surely have had a visitor in the mood to experience the city on a weekday. A good bet is to start with drinks at Union Bar or Gekko, both by the same owner by the way, but with different concepts. Then 50th St Bar and end with drinks and dance at Pioneer. If you are not in the city, a cab ride to The Lab (on the eastern corner of Shwegonedine junction) for cocktails, wine and tapas will never go wrong. They’re usually fairly busy any day of the week.
The Myanmore Pub Crawl While at Myanmore we encourage responsible drinking, now and again it’s ok to get yourself out into the city and enjoy yourself in a variety of venues – which is why we’ve come up with the Myanmore Pub Crawl. Unfortunately, with the city’s layout, it’s pretty difficult to take in a pub crawl that is entirely in walking distance, but with the cheap cost of taxis, it’s easy to ferry yourself about town at a reasonable cost. Of course, there are plenty of variations to a Yangon Pub Crawl; Myanmore has put together its very own for the city - we are of course open to other ideas. It’s a good idea to line your stomach before the ‘crawl’ begins, so why not start with some excellent Rakhine Seafood, and a few beers, at Minn Lan Restaurant on Parami Road. Just around the corner from here is Cask 81, Yangon’s first whisky bar. A classy albeit expensive establishment, here is your place to sample a simDid you know? by Bartender Kyaw Zin ply terrific sample of whiskies. You will need Htun (Kevin) to take a taxi from here to The Lab, a cosy, Whereas foreigners like their cocktails friendly tapas restaurant/bar at Shwegondine with a strong and bitter taste, locals prefer Junction, before venturing downtown. For their sweeter, a bit sour and with not so a bit of street-life, check out the lively 19th strong flavour.Typically, a local will order a Street for some barbecued food and bustling Cuba Libre or a Daiquiri whereas a foreignnightlife, before heading for the classy Gekko er will be much more peculiar in ordering. Bar, located in the iconic Sofar & Co building For instance, a Manhattan will be ordered in the heart of downtown. If you’re still standmore-or-less sweet, more-or-less dry, until ing by this point, end your night at 50th Street it is perfect according to the person’s taste Bar, which is busy every night of the week. and preferences.
more drinking
Fridays have changed a lot the past year. From the traditional Strand Hotel Happy Hour ‘til 9pm, then to 50th St Bar until midnight before heading off to Cafe Liberal or similar, there are, thankfully, more choices now. However, you will not go wrong to start with a drink at either Sule Shangri-la’s Gallery Bar, mingle with other expats, tourists and locals at Strand Hotel, or enjoy the sunset at Yangon Sailing Club. Thereafter, a quick local meal at the popular Friendship Bar, at the corner of Inya road and Dhamazzedi road is recommended to soak in the atmosphere. MOJO, a few steps away, literally, is always known to have fun events on a Friday night; they’re open until the last person leaves. If you want the same vibe, Escape Bar is packed and they have an extensive list of artisan cocktails. From there you can easily crawl, or stumble, to GTR and DJ Bar. The Lab has been known to keep Yangon’s revellers busy late into the night too and is often a great place to go for a late night drink. There are a growing number of weekend events too, so keep your eye on MYANMORE.com for the most happening places every weekend.

With their plastic chairs, rickety tables and rustic fans, it’s hard to differentiate between the local versions of pubs. What makes ... a good cocktail We’re sure you’ve heard this saying before: Women are like a bottle of red wine, they get better with age. Based on this, we likened cocktails to a younger version of said women: Fresh, whimsical, and – our favourite word – PERKY! What makes a good cocktail is subjective to one’s liking and mood. A good mixologist also plays a big part in this equation. It has to have the right ingredients, balance and it has to be dressed-up seductively that when it’s all ready, you just want to grab it and go,” Ooo, baby!” Here are some of our favourite cocktails:
ESCAPE BAR Cocktail: Zinger Vodka / Gin / Raspberry / Honey / Lemongrass Tastes Like: The first kiss
ICE BAR new! Cocktail: Angel Blue Absolut Vodka/ Malibu / Blue Curacao / Pineapple Juice / Cranberry Juice Tastes Like: Heaven on Earth
GEKKO new ! Cocktail: Horse’s Neck – Scotch whisky / sake / fresh lemon / ginger beers / bitters Tastes like: The sweet and fading flicker of fireflies made into a candy.
MOJO Cocktail : Hitomi Lime / Cucumber / Vodka / Sugar / Grenadine / Shaked. Tastes Like: The sweet nectar of Summer Rain

THE LAB new ! Cocktail: Lycheelicious Rum / Lychee / lemon juice / mint Tastes Like: A minty tropical breeze
UNION BAR Cocktail: Moscow Mule Vodka / fresh lime / oldfashioned ginger beer / pinch of fresh ginger Taste like: Lightning-infused honey popping between your lips.
VISTA Cocktail: Vista Man Rum / malibu / midori / strawberry puree / lime Tastes Like: A sunny escape

A HEAVENLY SIP from THE THREE SEASONS OF Nikita Black savours the secret behind master mixologist and grand champion of AHRA-ASEAN Bartenders’ Competition 2014 , Kyaw Zin Htun.
dining & nightlife guide / august 2014
Hello, tell us about you. Hello, my name is Kyaw Zin Htun but you can call me Kevin. I’m now 27. I’m originally from Sagaing but my family moved to Yangon in 2000.
How did you become a bartender? When I was 20, I started university with a major in philosophy but had to drop out after my first year to take care of my family. For four years, I did many jobs to make money; I finally got an opportunity to change my life in 2008. I used to live next to a bar and I walked past it everyday. I was very curious to know what the people behind the bar were doing - shaking metal boxes and throwing bottles around. We are mixing cocktails, they said. That’s when my fascination for making drinks really started. One day, a friend told me about an opportunity to work in a bar in Malaysia. I applied and a few months later, I was a waiter at Werner’s Bar.
Who taught you all the secrets of making cocktails? I was a waiter for 6 months until the manager decided to put me on the other side of the bar. I was a barman for another 6 months before becoming a bartender. But you know, the difference when you are Myanmar is that, first of all, there is no school for bartending in our country; secondly, people in other countries look down on you and don’t want to teach you. I was lucky that the bartender at Werner’s was also from Myanmar. I really worked hard; I observed and wrote down everything, until I could finally mix cocktails too.
What do you like so much about making cocktails? Oh...when you can see that what you make really hit the spot with your customer. You engage with them, observe and listen to understand how they feel and what they want or need. Then it’s up to you to create the drink which matches the desire of the person in front of you. tails because they want the whole experience that comes with it - the smiles, the performance, the presentation; a custom-made drink. You can’t get that from a bottle.

PARADISE Mr Naing Lin! He is the manager at Union Bar. He spotted me when he was in Malaysia and brought me back to train the staff on cocktail-making and cocktail creation. That was a year ago.
You are the winner of the 1st Myanmar Bartenders’ Competition! Congratulations! Was this your first competition? Actually, it’s a funny story how it all started. There was a competition in Malaysia back in 2012 in which one other bartender from Werner’s was competing. Unfortunately he was sick so I filled in under his name! I did not win, but this event really gave me confidence in my abilities. The next competition I attended, was also a bartenders competition, which was held in June by the MRA.
You won the 1st prize, the Creativity Award and the Flare Award with your creation, the Crawling Irrawaddy. Tell us more! I didn’t participate to win; I took this as an opportunity to express my creativity. Of course I trained - but most importantly I wanted to create a drink that means something. The Irrawaddy River is the heart of our country. It breaks down into small rivers and crawls into the countryside. I wanted to express the beauty of our land; our agriculture and the authenticity of our people. My cocktail is made of gin, sugarcane and cranberries and is simply decorated with a sugarcane stick. Do you know that a sugarcane doesn’t grow alone? It is surrounded by many others just like it.just like our people. And each stick has many branches, just like our river.
Cocktail making really sounds like poetry when you talk about it. What is the story behind your cocktail, the 3 Seasons of Paradise which made you the overall champion at the AHRA-ASEAN Bartenders’ Competition 2014? Myanmar has three seasons: hot, cold, rainy. With each season, the fruit and the vegetables change. But there is one beautiful, delicious fruit you can always find: the pomelo. Any time of year, it’s sweetness will be there with you. This cocktail is rum-based and sweetened with grenadine.
I want one! Can I order it from Union Bar? Haha, well… You know, these two cocktails mean a lot to me. They are still my secret garden, and I don’t feel like putting them for sale...but one day maybe!
Kevin Kyaw Zin Htun will be representing Myanmar to compete in Singapore on the 9th of August at the Asia Pacific Bartenders’ Competition 2014. He is putting the creative juices to a cocktail based on mixed influences from Myanmar and Europe… ooooo we can’t wait! Go Kevin!

The club culture in Yangon is a tad different. Firstly, they’re not what their name suggest - cafe Liberal is not a cafe, DJ Bar is not a bar, they’re both a club. Secondly, they’re all the go-to place as a last stop, so they’re usually busiest past 3am. Thirdly, although they welcome foreigners, they’re not quite as welcoming; caution is advised, especially when it comes to watching over your belongings.

Moved to a new location in 2013, it is now closeto the Chatrium hotel, next to Kandawgyi Lake. Playing dance music interspersed with the latest hits, it attracts the hip Yangoners. There’s a nice seating area where you can chill and chat. Open till the wee hours, it tends to be a place where people go as a last stop before the night closes in. Expect to see your fair share of ladies of the night.

Probably Yangon’s most genuine club, it’s an animated place which plays some mildly questionable music, but unlike some of the city’s other late-night venues, the crowd appears to be here to enjoy themselves without any ulterior motives.

A PHOENIX RISING Leena Salim escapes into the world of the mastermind behind Escape Bar’s success and his Midas touch: Htet Tayza
TELL US ABOUT HOW ESCAPE BAR BEGINS AND WHERE THE IDEA CAME FROM It’s quite a story, how we began. A few years ago I had the opportunity to undertake an internship at the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong where I developed a better insight into the industry. That experience coupled with my interest in gastro-mixology simply led to one question – why not make it happen back home? I was 19 when Escape first entered the scene, and I’m actually still completing my Bachelor’s degree at the Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne – a leading hospitality school in Switzerland. I grew up witnessing Myanmar’s hospitality industry driven on the wrong path and I’ve always aspired to contribute and be part of our country’s urban potential. Having had school on one hand, I knew I couldn’t have done it on my own and needed to seek a partner who could help materialize the idea. At the time, Jeremy had started Scoop, a leading ice cream supplier based in Yangon. With his expertise, I knew he was the right person to partner with. I shared the idea of opening up a gastro bar, and he loved it! We wanted to create an atmosphere that was both contemporary and modest, focusing on three main pillars: cocktails, cuisine, and people. I have to say though, the most difficult part was probably deciding on the name for the bar!
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS ESCAPE’S WINNING FORMULA I personally don’t believe in any winning formula, it doesn’t exist! If I must answer your question, it would be: keep your customers happy, but keep your employees happier! My staff are a priority, and we have a very strong family spirit at the bar. Escape will not be here today without them. I’m
99
proud to say we have one of the youngest teams in Yangon and I owe everything to them. Well done guys!
My Mum’s house on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT NEXT FROM ESCAPE Jeremey and I are looking at opening another venture in Yangon or even in Nay Pyi Taw. I’m 21 now, graduating next year, and I can’t tell you enough how excited I am to finally return and implement what I’ve learned into Myanmar. You could say Escape was just my first tip-toe. I look forward to seeing the hospitality industry grow here.
IF YOU CAN INVITE ANYONE, DEAD OR ALIVE, TO ESCAPE BAR, WHO WOULD IT BE, AND WHAT DRINK WOULD YOU SERVE? My father. You know that superhero you’ve always admired and wanted to be when you were a kid? Well, that’s him to me. As much as he loves his wine, I’d love to make him our signature, the Tiki-Taka.
Escape Bar is the Winner of BEST BAR in the recent MYANMORE AWARDS 2014. This article first appeared in April 30 2014 on MYANMORE.
